This book describes the major aesthetic image elementslight and color, space, time-motion, and soundand how they are used in television and film. Zettls comprehensive coverage of aesthetic theory and his inclusion of effective visuals and examples place this text in a class by itself.

Best in field.......2004-12-28
This text thoroughly explains the intricacies of applied media asthetics in a concise and completely accessible way. It is a well organizied text that ehances its presentation through the use of many illustrations. I believe that this is the best text on the subject and that it has been since its first edtion.
motion graphics professor.......2002-06-04
"Sight, Sound, Motion: Applied Media Aesthetics explains the WHY of film and video production. If you're looking for HOW then turn to another book."
I would disagree with the above review. Only by learning WHY first, can we learn HOW later. This book is more than a cookie cutter approach to film and video. If you want to "click and drag" your way through an editing program, then true, this book is not for you. Add this to your collection if you want a book that teaches how to see and create film. Sight, Sound, Motion: Applied Media Aesthetics has staying power.
Fundamental book on the theory of the moving image.......2001-05-20
This was the assigned textbook for my digital video 2 class, and it is simply wonderful. Zettl is a very knowledgable man on the subject of creating images for film, video, and even new media. (Zettl's text Video Basics 3 was used in my digital video 1 class as well) This book lays a solid foundation for the theory behind how and why the viewer perceives the moving image, and how the filmmaker and video producer can create more pleasing and coherent productions.
While the biggest complaint I've heard about this book is it's over-reliance on theory, it still does a good job of contextualizing theory into practical application. Thus the title of the book: APPLIED Media Aesthetics. Although I haven't read any of Eisentien's theories behind filmmaking, I suspect that Zettl's treatment would compete rather well, and is probably more accessible for a modern reader.
This book covers all the bases from color and light, time and space and structuring audio to image. Zettl succintcly deconstructs the intelligent mind behind the images and sound of our cultures film and television productions.
Sight, Sound, Motion: Applied Media Aesthetics explains the WHY of film and video production. If you're looking for HOW then turn to another book.
The Filmmaker's Bible of Aesthetics or What Works and Why.......2000-11-04
This is probably the most important textbook a film production student can have on his/her shelf. NOT for how to work with actors or how to light a scene, but for understanding the underlying reasons of why things work due to our learned aesthetics and Western sensibilities.
Professor Herbert Zettl has written the most concise manual on why we has film viewers percieve things the way we do. He explains in detail (and layman's terms) how our aesthetics have been formed to interpret the dynamic medium of film and television.
How editing of action from shot to shot creates the illusion of continuous motion. How stagelines work so not to give the effect that your actor is jumping around from one side of the scene to the other. How to crop your shot BETWEEN the bodies natural cut-off points (i.e. neck, elbow, waist) to prevent the actor from looking like a disembodied head or torso.
This book is cover-to-cover insights into what we as viewers take for granted when we watch a good filmmaker's work, but may not consider when faced with the daunting task of mounting a film production and the on-set "reality" problems that dominate the filmmaker's mind when shooting a film.
I first read this book when I was in film school twenty years ago. Since then I have directed many professional film productions and I still review it before starting a new one to refresh myself.
Just as Syd Field's book "Screenplay" is the bible for screenwriting, "Sight Sound Motion" is the bible on understanding what works in film/video and why.

A Potter's Guidebook.......2002-02-27
Refreshing approach, this reverse dictionary! Outstanding aid for collectors, and a MUST HAVE for studio ceramists. Anyone in need of an easy reference guide to ware types chocked full of nit-picking details on the whats and wheres and howtos ... and whys ... will cherish this book's offerings. And, potters rejoice, for a book by a potter for potters. And historins? They are treated to a treasure trove. Hats off to the author. Hope he/she has more on the way.
Reverse Dictionaries.......2001-09-19
Reverse dictionaries, references that list subjects by their common descriptions rather than by their common "names" (brands, manufacture, location, etc.), are handy indeed, and needed for most all subjects. Hooray, then, that someone has finally come up with a reverse dictionary for ceramics, where one can, for instance, look for PORCELAIN, get a DETAILED DESCRIPTION, and then be treated to where one can find EXEMPLARY PIECES. That this dictionary has been put together by a long-time practicing ceramist adds unusual and very helpful richness.
Highly recommended for anyone's library.

Sigh, this is not an anime for those prone to adiction..........2001-11-20
I picked up the anime 3 years ago, I have and will not let go.
If you have any intrest in anime you should at lest read the first valume.
Sinji is starting cope with his life, he tries to conect with his father but (I think you know what will happen). Shinji incuers Rei on how to talk with his father but she seems not to help. Faceing abandement Sinji(Asuka, and Rei) have to face the seventh angel!
This is the way the world ends........2001-11-09
I had long been a fan of the Neon Genesis Evangelion Anime, but the manga is not a simple retelling of your favorite episodes. Events have been reordered, and entirely new threads and stories are coming to pass in the manga version of the fan favorite series.
More cannot be said without spoiling the surprises that wait inside the book. The art is superb, coming from the artist who designed the look of the series itself. I can't wait to see how it will all end.

Customer Reviews:
What's the big deal?.......2004-07-31
There is very little changed from the TV series in this manga. As far as right to left, who cares. The artwork is hard to figure out in many of the mecha scenes. Stick with the DVDs.
A gift from God to mankind.......2003-12-19
This is the greatest literary work existing. When I read it the first time I was overjoyed by the mere existence of something as wonderful as this book. The plot is wonderful, so are the characters (you'll love Asuka, Shinji, and all the others!). There is only one good reason for not buying this book, and that is not having read the earlier volumes. Buy them, and the buy this. I can promise you you'll be glad you did. Noone could dislike this book.
quiet relationships.......2002-05-15
Vol. 3 is one of my fav simply because of how the story is and what ahppenes. Here ur left to wonder of many but still feel satisfied. The conversations are informative and as always the art is perfect. there is also some comody and some quite controvesial scenes u might wanna check out. :D
Good book.......2002-05-01
Evangelion Vol. 1, by Yoshiyuki is the first book in the series. This book is based on a popular Japanese cartoon, Evangelion. This book covers the first episode and parts of the second.
This book takes place in Japan in the year 2015, 15 years after the first ?Angel? self-destructs taking Antarctica and half the human race with it. The enemies are known as ?Angels?. In this, another Angel attacks, and the only people who can stop them are a couple of 14 year-olds in their gigantic robots called Evangelions.
I enjoyed reading it because it is in manga (comic book) form. I first read it when my friend loaned it to me, but shortly after, I bought the book. I highly recommend this book to anyone because I thought it was great. The author did an awesome job writing this book. I can?t wait till the rest of the series comes out.

A Knockout.......2005-09-11
The NEWMARKET series is the best in published screenplays because they maintain the original format of the pages from the production script. As any screenwriter knows, the layout and presentation of how a page looks can sometimes be as important as the content.
This is a great book and a great movie. The script itself is very readable, plus it represents a primer on how to write both period detail and boxing scenes. The additional historic and filmmaking information only adds to the experience of the film -- and of reading the script.

Book Description
The King's Indian Attack was a firm favorite of the legendary Bobby Fischer, and more recently it has been utilized with great success by world-class Grandmasters such as Alexander Morozevich. The renowned chess coach Mark Dvoretsky regards the King's Indian Attack as a perfect weapon on which to base an opening repertoire. Its great advantage over other openings is that it's a thematic system that can be employed against many different lines, while the emphasis is on the understanding of ideas rather than the dry memorization of moves. The King's Indian Attack leads to rich middlegame positions that are full of dynamic possibilities for both sides.
In this easy-to-use guide, King's Indian Attack expert John Emms goes back to basics, studying the fundamental principles of this attack and its numerous lines. Throughout the book there are an abundance of notes, tips, and warnings to help improving players, while key strategies, ideas, and tactics for both sides are clearly illustrated.
User-friendly design to help readers absorb ideas
Concentrates on the key principles of the King's Indian Attack
Ideal for improving players
Customer Reviews:
Not exactly what it seems.......2007-06-24
This is primarily about the closed French and closed Siclian defenses, from white's perspective, (about 140 pages). The last 60 pages is about the reversed King's Indian opening. If your primary interest is playing 1. Nf3 as white, this is probably not the book you are looking for.
If you like opening with 1. e4, and want a systematic response when your opponent does not reply with 1. ... e5, then this is a good book for you. You will have a system of play that does not require learning the vast variations of the open French and Sicilian defenses.
Also, you will have in hand the 1. Nf3 opening, in case you want to change things up a bit with a secondary opening as white.
The book is well written and illustrated, the level of detail is suitable for the beginning or intermediate player. It assumes a basic knowledge of the game beyond just knowing how the pieces move.
A good opening book.......2006-08-15
This is a well organized and easy to understand book for players at all levels. Whether you want to play the KIA or want a better line against an opponent, this volume does the job.
An in-depth guide for intermediate to advanced chess players.......2005-11-08
Written by British chess Grandmaster John Emms, Starting Out: King's Indian Attack is an in-depth guide for intermediate to advanced chess players to the King's Indian Attack, a favorite chess strategy of the legendary Bobby Fischer, among others including world-class Grandmaster Alexander Morozevich. Starting Out: King's Indian Attack studies the fundamental principles of this tactic and its numerous lines. A wealth of notes, tips, warnings, suggestions, sample games and diagrams serve to enlighten the average player on the strengths and weaknesses of using or defending against this strategy. Highly recommended for any dedicated chess player seeking to improve his or her game against experienced opponents.

Although I do not own this book "yet" I have borrowed it from a friend. Every page I turn I smile, laugh, or am in awe of a story that tells about God's grace. This is a book for mature 16 year olds and on I think. I think possibly younger children may not appreciate some of the humor, but it is definatly a great buy.

The Box of Delights Is a Book of Delights .......2007-02-27
This and John Masefield's other childrens book, "The Midnight Folk" are without a doubt two of the finest most imaginative examples of children's literature I have ever read. Far too little known to Americans, these books demand more attention, and like me many adults reading this for the first time will ask, "Where has this been all my life?"
The fascinating thing is the counter point this sequel to "The Midnight Folk" offers, while this fantasy is centered at the Christmas/Solstice/Yule season with all the magical symbolism that entails, the "Midnight Folk" offers a wonderful autumnal Halloween/Samhain mood. You will note that I combine the Christian and pagan holidays, Masefield does a masterful job blending these rich folkoric elements that will delight both children and adults. The verbal imagery is breathtaking as you can feel the sharp wind and icy needles our main character Kay feels while out in a winter's night skulking to find the answers to the mysteries of the titled box of delights. The villainous Abner Brown is both hilariously inept and frightening at the same time.
As the other reviewer noted, though a sequel to the "Midnight Folk" this work stands solidly on its own. I encourage you to track down a copy of this neglected masterpiece of children's fantasy.
Worthwhile Children's Literature.......2006-12-21
As an adult I take a great deal of interest in and concern for exposing our children to excellent children's literature. While not well known this book is a wonderful one to be read aloud to a child with a good imagination or as a way of helping them to develop one. The character of Kay, a young boy, being cared for by a governess and household of servants helps youngsters from the ages of 7-10 to strech their imaginations and expand their vocabulary. The story is an engaging fantasy and fortifies the virutes of honesty, courage, and intelligence that we should all encourage. Much of today's children's literature may be action packed but is simplistic and lacking in character building ideas. The Box Of Delights is acutally the sequel to the Midnight Folk but can be read on its own. It won't bore the parent reading it either!
Follow Kay on his Christmas adventure!

Beware! It's abridged!.......2005-07-03
Box of delights and its prequel The midnight folks are truly great classics of children literature, but beware: the editions present on Amazon are an heavily abridged version edited by Patricia Crampton (it's an english tv-movie tie-in, if i'm not wrong).
Check Amazon.co.uk for the complete version (published by Egmont)of these two wonderful, ageless classics.
The Box of Delights.......2002-09-09
My aunt gave this book to me for Christmas when I was eleven years old -- 18 years ago -- and I have read it every Christmas since! Now I am looking forward to reading it to my sons. It is a beautiful tale that leaves some of the simple magic of Christmas intact. A must read for all ages.
A wonderful read for adults and children alike.......2001-04-12
This book is one that should never be allowed to go out of print. Children of today who enjoy fantasy (i.e., Narnia and even Harry Potter) will enjoy The Box of Delights just as much. I can only suppose no publisher has thought to reissue it because the author is long-dead and was more noted as a poet than a children's writer.
The BBC turned it into an excellent 6-part TV series which, although dated in its magical effects, is still extremely enjoyable. The production was also transferred to video tape (about three hours in length) and as far as I know is still available. We had no trouble obtaining our own copy a few years ago, anyway. In our house (where there are no children!) it has been viewed every Christmas ever since it was released on New Zealand television. With its 1930s Christmas setting of the English countryside shrouded in snow (and a wonderful story of villainy outwitted by children) it makes perfect Christmas viewing. But of course the book is always better than the movie! Borrow it from your library if a copy is available there.
A magical children's adventure.......1999-10-30
John Masefield, who died in 1967, was best known as a poet. He did a few juvenile adventure stories of which "The Box of Delights" (1935) is by far the best. It is the sequel to "The Midnight Folk", an occult adventure in which young Kay Harker discovers that his governess, Sylvia Pouncer, is a witch.
As the first reviewer has already given an exhaustive precis of this work I will just add that it is a delightful Christmas thriller and the BBC TV version is a wonderful and faithful retelling of the story.
A forgotten classic - among the 10 best children's thrillers, IMHO.
Magical Christmas adventure.......1997-11-14
I highly recommend this children's book; even adults may find themselves carried away by this fantastical story. Set in 1930's England, it follows the Christmas holiday adventures of Kay Hawker and his cousins Peter, Susan, and Jemima. On the train home from school, Kay meets a stange and kindly old man. As they become friends, the old man gives Kay a precious treasure to guard, the Box of Delights. It is a magic instrument that can shrink you to the size of an insect, can make you fly, and can take you backward or forward through time. It turns out the old man has an unusual past, and there are ambitious villians after him and the box. Because the villians are disguised and passing themselves of as men of the cloth, the children have a difficult time exposing them. They are resourseful, however, and succeed in their quest to save the box and their Christmas celebrations. This story incorporates the mythical heroism of legend ( ie King Arthur, the Trojan War, Hern the Hunter and Fairy folk) with contemporary bad guys, car chases, kidnappings, and rescues. An excellant British/Canadian television special was produced about fifteen years ago that brings this story to life. Either are very enjoyable for boys and girls, and people of all ages.

Book Description
“Christmas ought to brought up to date,” says tough little Maria Jones to her cousin Kay Harker. “It ought to have gangsters, and aeroplanes, and a lot of automatic pistols.” Before long her wish will be granted in the wonderful blend of adventure and magic that is John Masefield’s The Box of Delights. Strange things begin to happen the minute young Kay boards the train to go home for Christmas and finds himself under observation by two very shifty looking characters dressed up like men of the cloth. Arriving at his destination, the young boy is immediately accosted by a bright-eyed old man with a message he wants delivered: “Tell them the wolves are running.” Next thing you know, danger seems to lurk everywhere, as the cousin Maria, the old man, Kay’s beloved guardian Carolina Louisa, and the Bishop of Tatchester and his entire staff are kidnapped in flying black taxis by a gang headed by the notorious shapeshifting wizard Abner Brown and his witch wife Sylvia Pouncer. What does Abner Brown want? The magic box that the old man has entrusted to Kay, which allows him to travel freely not only in space but in time and that just may allow him to rescue his friend, foil Abner Brown’s plot, and save Christmas too.
At once a thriller, a romp, and a spellbinding dream, The Box of Delights is a great English children’s book in the tradition of The Wind and the Willows and The Chronicles of Narnia, as well as a perfect Christmas treat.
