Book Description

Johanna Drucker's "sweet dream" is for a new and more positive approach to contemporary art. Calling for a revamping of the academic critical vocabulary used to discuss art into one more befitting current creative practices, Drucker argues that contemporary art is fully engaged with material culture—yet still struggling to escape the oppositional legacy of the early twentieth-century avant-garde.

Drucker shows that artists today are aware of working within the ideologies of mainstream culture and have replaced avant-garde defiance with eager complicity. Finding their materials at flea markets or exploring celebrity culture, contemporary artists have created a vibrantly participatory movement that exudes enthusiasm and affirmation—all while critics continue to cling to an outmoded vocabulary of opposition and radical negativity that defined modernism's avant-garde. At the cutting edge of new media research, Drucker surveys a wide range of exciting contemporary artists, demonstrating their clear departure from the past and petitioning viewers and critics to shift their terms and sensibilities as well. Sweet Dreams is a testament to the creative processes and self-conscious heterogeneity of art today as well as a revolutionary effort to solicit collaboration that will encourage the production of imaginative thought and contribute to contemporary life.

A great general book for hobby artists but not quite what I was looking for at the time. It provided some great tips and information for the at home craftsperson, who wants to make one-off designs.

Recommend it for that purpose highly.

5 out of 5 stars Everything you need.......2007-07-12

This is an excellent resource for anyone who is interested in screenprinting. Not only does it review great safety tips and technqiues but there are many inspiriational images which show the full potential of screen printing.

    5 out of 5 stars great book.......2007-03-09

this book is a good book if you would like to get into screen printing. this book focuses more on the art of screen printing(art prints etc..)and not t shirts. if you wantto print tshirts, get scott fresners book on screen printing. this book covers alot of ground and its detailed quite well.doesnt tell you how to separate colors using a computer.

    5 out of 5 stars screenprinting.......2006-04-01

Good basic info for beginning screenprinters and more advanced screenprinters who want to set up their own studio.

3 out of 5 stars this book is fine.......2006-02-17

I liked how this book provides an overall idea about the screenprinting techniques but it's definitely not something very very detailed for someone who wants the nitty gritty details about all techniques.

    Book Description

    • Spotlights "green" technology, safe for all artists • Distinguished author has worked with Andy Warhol, Red Grooms, Romare Bearden, and other top artists • Techniques range from the traditional hands-on to the latest in digital screenprinting

For many years, screenprinting was oil-based—and presented significant health risks even as it damaged the environment. Today, fortunately, screenprinting has shifted to water-based technologies. Now Roni Henning, a leading expert on screenprinting, offers her tips and techniques for getting the most out of these safer, "greener" water-based methods ranging from the traditional hands-on methods to the latest digital technology. She explains separations and color correcting, then discusses the artist-printmaker collaboration, giving intriguing examples from her own work with such luminaries as Andy Warhol, Red Grooms, and Romare Bearden. Henning also offers step-by-step instructions for monoprinting, her own direct-to-screen watercolor process. Illustrated with glowing examples of the printmaking medium, including works by Bearden, Jack Youngerman, Gene Davis, and Elizabeth Osbourne, this is the definitive work on an increasingly popular art.

5 out of 5 stars The author works "with you" and doesn't talk "down to you".......2007-08-16

If you are a curious person, interested in learning the art of silk screening, in as direct of an approach as possible, I personally feel that this books author does a great job of articulating her theories and principals in a very user friendly fashion.

The above sentence is an example of how most technical books would use the English language to make the readers brain ache . . .

If you are curious about silk-screening, I think the author of this book does a great job of explaining things in a clear and understandable way.

The above sentence is an example of how I felt as I made my way through Roni Henning's latest book, "Water-Based Screen-printing Today".

Having had the privilege of actually attending a function honoring Roni Henning's artistic works, and having the pleasure of speaking to her in person, I have to say I walked away with the impression that the author is truly passionate about "teaching".

She has a special, "down to earth" air about her, like most artists, yet she also presents her thoughts and ideas in a regimented, professional and interesting way.

It's that kind of approach that makes her lessons and her book a very easy and comforting guide to follow when exploring the art of silk-screening.

"Water-Based Screen-printing Today" helped turn what was just a curiosity of mine, into a blossoming hobby.

While it might be true that actual silk-screening classes, with true hands on experience can't be replaced by a book, for me this book provided enough helpful information, for very little money, to help me decide if silk-screening was something I might wish to pursue further.

I don't think you can ask much more from a book such as this.

I hope to some day make it to one of the authors workshops that she has on occasion throughout the country, so that I may find out if I have the ability to take my hobby to an even more fulfilling level.

4 out of 5 stars Great Teaching Tool.......2007-08-08

This practical guide to the silk screen process is really useful. There are plenty of illustrations and detailed instruction on how the author achieved the look shown. Of course, as with all art making, there is always more than one way to do something. The author explains how projects are handled in their particular shop. The section on halftone screens is very useful, as is the explanation of monotyping. This book takes the time to explain ways of making the process work "at home." I used sections out of this manual for a beginning silk screen class, and they found it helpful

Leon Zeisel is in big trouble. He is perpetually exhausted due to an overactive icemaker in the hotel where he lives, he discovers in his mother's desk a confidential envelope from his school announcing that he displays "a troubling lack of fine motor skills," and worst of all, he begins fourth grade under the tyrannical tutelage of Miss Hagmeyer, a black-cloaked, black-wigged, mushroom-eared woman who is obsessed with sewing, a fine motor skill if there ever was one. Insisting that all instruction should stem from the Middle Ages and "The Heavenly Stitches of Virtue," the Hag forces her students to sew an "animile" per month, a stuffed animal of sorts that is not to exceed four s.p.i. (stitches per inch) in the inseam. What happens when Leon decides to sew his end-of-year "Master Piece," the "spitting image" of Miss Hagmeyer, an exact miniature replica down to her liver-colored panty hose? Allen Kurzweil creates a magical, eccentric world where, as in many of the most satisfying children's books, adults are benevolent but flawed--and kids are in delicious control of them. Fans of Daniel Pinkwater's novels will feel right at home with this clever and suspenseful underdog-turns-champion story with a dribble of magic. (Ages 8 and older) --Karin Snelson

                Book Description

Leon and the Spitting Image is about a hotel full of animals. It's about an evil ice maker. It's about glass eyeballs and human catapults. It's about really old panty hose and Possibly Fake Hair.

But mostly it's about Leon Zeisel and his epic quest to survive fourth grade. What's stopping him? Two things. First, there's Miss Hagmeyer. She's a supernaturally strict teacher with ears that resemble giant rotting mushrooms. And then there is Leon's archenemy, Lumpkin the Pumpkin, a human tank with a deadly dodgeball throw known to all as the sidewinder.

Luckily, Leon has two friends, Lily-Matisse and P.W., who will stand by him no matter what -- even if his magical, mysterious plans for rescue and revenge involve ... SPIT!

I can't understand why anyone would give this book a high rating. It wasn't anything special. The writing was very average, the story not very interesting. I guess after reading better books, I have high expectations.

If you like mysteries, spookiness, and maybe even sewing. I recomend this book, because it is funny and full of adventure.Allen Kurzwell put a lot of detail into this book,I didn't dislike anything in this great book.

4 out of 5 stars A Deliciously Quirky Book for Kids!.......2006-09-08

Fourth grader Leon lives with his mother in their eccentric apartment house in New York City. Leon is nervous about going into the fourth grade, and is horrified to find out his teacher is the dreaded Mrs.Hagmire. She is well known for her obsession with sewing which is especially bad for Leon because of his poor fine motor skills. She forces her students to create "animles" (in other words models of animals) sewn from her old panty hose. A bizarre accident involving a jar of spit gives Leon's animle strange powers. This is a fast paced funny book that will appeal to those who enjoy humorous fantasy.

5 out of 5 stars Excitement, magic, and mystery.......2006-02-25

I think that Leon and the Spitting Image is a great book that a lot of readers would love to read. It's about Leon Ziezel and his two friends, Lilly-Matise and P.W., and how they try to survive fourth grade and avoid being caught by Miss Hagmeyer (or "The Hag") their teacher who is obsessed with sewing and medieval things, and Henry Lumkin (or "Hank the Tank") the school bully. But with a little bit of spit, everything could change. I recommend this book for anyone who likes excitement, magic, and mystery kind of things.

5 out of 5 stars A great read for after Harry Potter.......2005-07-29

Leon lives in a world that is far from normal. He resides in a hotel that is regularly inhabited by the strangest of pets and is tortured each night by the Ice Queen, an ice machine with definite personality disorders, determined it seems, to prevent sleep. But Leon's life is about to get even odder - he's entering the 4th grade at a school known for its unorthodox teaching methods.

Enter Miss Hagmeyer, a teacher with ears like a bat, who changes the eyeballs on her cloak to suit the day's lessons and whose hair is rumoured to be a wig held on by Velcro. She's obsessed with sewing and the Middle Ages, and any student wishing to pass 4th grade must master the "Heavenly Stitches of Virtue" and create seven animiles (stuffed animals) to her exacting standards. How Leon navigates the year and comes into his own will delight readers of all ages.

Allen Kurzweil has created a world of magical realism but has kept his hero, and friends, as truly ordinary children facing realities of life to which his readers can relate. Leon lives with his single Mom who works long hours, faces torment by a bully at school and struggles with lessons. The chaotic world around him infuses Leon's story with enchantment and captures the imagination quickly, making this a heart-warming as well as delightful tale.

                    4 out of 5 stars Power of a 'Non-Fiction Novel'.......2006-12-21

In discussing personal events, some a half-century old, it's damn difficult to believe that anyone has the 20/20 recall displayed by John Gilmore in 'Laid Bare'. But once you suspend disbelief, you can walk into this book with the swagger of a Chandleresque detective, sipping an afternoon whiskey in a smoky dive in downtown LA, listening to a failed 1950s Hollywood actor tell you all about the famous people he's known. "Sure pal," you say, "go on, tell me more about this Jim Dean character. Sounds like trouble."

This is a book about deformed celebrity (James Dean, Jane Fonda, Marilyn Monroe, etc.) and failed celebrity (John Gilmore). You aren't required to recognize half of these long-ago stars to get the jaded, forlorn vibe of the piece. Gilmore walks with a lot of ghosts and lives with a deadening irony: if he's (in)famous (and published) it's through describing first-hand, often graphic encounters with film stars. Yet, he constantly moans about his failure to launch successful film and publishing projects. He's not content with his notoriety -- yet is painfully aware that without it he'd be sweeping floors.

In this way, Gilmore himself becomes a kind of Zelig-like character, always in the background, molding to the events, surviving the headliners, interpreting their actions.

Is it all fact? Probably not even Gilmore knows. Perhaps Capote was on to something with the power of the non-fiction which says (to a point) - "It might not have happened exactly this way, but it should have."

If Gimore wasn't actually been present at these events, then this would devolve to fanzine/tabloid fodder. But the fact that he was - to some degree - an observor/participant, takes it from yellow journalism into the realm of confession.

And confessions make great movies. So maybe the irony will, one day, come full circle for John Gilmore.

5 out of 5 stars GILMORE STILL THE KING OF L.A. NOIR .......2006-07-31

LAID BARE tells the hard-knocks, riveted facts of a life lived in Hollywood, always on the sets, the parties and wild times. It is with equal delight that I express that while James Ellory was breaking into high school girls homes and stealing their panties, and while he was sleeping in park bushes from binges (all according to Ellory), John Gilmore was hanging with James Dean and movie stars, a teenage Sunset Strip and Beverly Hills club-hopper with people Ellory could never have possible known who would have now found him an incredulous and obnoxious boor. As describned in LAID BARE, Gilmore was struggleing to make it as a legitimate stage actor in New York, and trying to break into Hollywood movies while Ellory was burglaring homes on panty raids instead of chasing the real thing as Gilmore was doing. Gilmore's writings were being published while Elroy was still on in the bushes, or so it would appear. Gilmore's book on the Black Dahlia was optioned six years for a movie by Edward Pressman who didn't option Ellroy's book. Ellroy has lucked out with a mediocre movie with Brian DiPalma while Gilmore has withdrawn his own property for a special venture on the person he knew as Elizabeth Short, the Black Dahlia. Ellroy has apparently pulled his head from the bushes and sees he is not as important as he wanted to be; he is not the hard-core L.A. noir writer of Gilmore's stature. A reviewer says that Ellroy has publicly said "Gilmore is full of crap". Ellroy is a hack writer of juvenile mentality and Gilmore is a superb artist. Perhaps Ellory hates more that Gilmore doesn't acknowledge Ellroy and has no time for such "buck-grabbers," as Gilmore said during a reading at Skylight books in Los Angeles, mentioning Ellroy, Steve Hodel and Donald Wolfe. Ellory thrives on public attention while Gilmore doesn't. Ellory writes commercially to entertain and Gilmore, a genius, writes to enlighten. Ellroy has used almost every celebrity name to bolster his pulp fictions (naturally the real people he fabricates about are dead). Gilmore actually knew these people. As in LAID BARE, He writes about them honestly and with daring aplomb, pathos, sensitivity and pain. Such is the saga of James Ellroy bad-mouthing Gilmore. LAID BARE is a brilliant read, a deep, searching probe into the nature of celebrity and the price of the hunger for fame. A book that will live for generations!

                    4 out of 5 stars A Hollywood Trip...........2006-07-20

While reading John Gilmore's "Laid Bare - A Memoir of Wrecked Lives and the Hollywood Death Trip," I was amazed at the number of notorious celebrities the author had tilted booze, dropped acid and eventually slept with. From Janis Joplin and Jean Seberg to James Dean and Sal Mineo, Gilmore was witness to a side of fame few could only dream of. Now, if it was only true.

This is not to say Gilmore's extremely well-written musings are a load of baloney, as his chapters devoted to Joplin, Jim Morrison and even the sad story of Barbara Payton are insightful and poetic. The details provided are so original that much of this has to be based on fact. Gilmore, born and raised in Hollywood and the son of a former bit player at MGM and an LAPD cop, was a part-time actor, screenplay writer and director who seemed to never catch a break. City hopping between Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco and Paris during the 1950s and 60s, Gilmore's quest for movie stardom failed to materialize. To his credit, he had several agents and did quite a bit of television work with guest roles on such programs as "The Naked City," "Bonanza" and "The Barbara Stanwyck Show." Publicity shots of Gilmore from this period show a youthful heart-breaker with a strong resemblance to Tony Curtis. He tried to direct a surfing epic in Hawaii, but financing fell through. He was to co-star in a European film with Seberg, but Italian investors pulled out. And while he was Dennis Hopper's roommate, he wrote a screenplay that was eerily similar to what would become "Easy Rider," though he received no credit for it. And the list goes on.

One of many controversial passages in Gilmore's book is devoted to his friendship with James Dean. After Dean's shocking death at the moment of super stardom, quite a few people claimed deep friendships with the legendary star. Gilmore has not only tried on this jacket, but he says their camaraderie began in New York and continued through Los Angeles where they would ride motorcycles together along coastal highways. These dream-like road trips would inspire his screenplay that would eventually be stolen by Hopper and mined into "Easy Rider" gold.

Gilmore describes a deeply troubled Dean, who had a fascination with speed and death. He claims they experimented together sexually, but Dean was mainly a heterosexual. This friendship, while giving Gilmore some notoriety, eventually caused Hollywood to brand the author a "rebel and troublemaker," further contributing to his failure to break through studio doors. Perhaps, but it did lead to Gilmore's novel "Live Fast Die Young: the Short Life of James Dean" which has done well on the bestseller lists. Today, residing in attractive senior citizen splendor, Gilmore the rebel seems to have found his niche with nonfiction investigation, penning such memorable works as "Severed: the True Story of the Black Dahlia Murder" and "Manson: The Unholy Trail of Charlie and the Family." In all, he's written around 10 noteworthy novels, some fiction, most not, hovering around the seamy side of LA life.

What is most fascinating about Gilmore's "Laid Bare" is the recreation of a storied Hollywood in transition. The studio system was coming to an end and the fertile era of the furious 1960s and 70s was slowly taking root. It's the kind of meat James Ellroy ("LA Confidential") feeds on regularly, and it's not surprising that Ellroy has gone on record to say Gilmore is full of crap. Truth be told, Gilmore most certainly hovered around a movie scene Ellroy could only dream of.

Anyway, Gilmore's take on the likes of Lenny Bruce, Jane Fonda, William Burroughs and Steve McQueen is not especially positive. He has quite a bit of venom built up for McQueen, who had an affair with his first wife while the trio lived in New York. Hopper is raked over the coals with rare abandon. Jack Nicholson is poked a few times. He even takes Errol Flynn to the cleaners, though the sex-obsessed swashbuckler has always been an easy target.

The irritating hair which one can never easily pluck while perusing this underbelly wreckage, is that the huge majority of celebrities Gilmore crucifies kicked the bucket many years ago. None of these sad souls are alive to dispute Gilmore's shady claims. Conversations which took place 40 and 50 years ago are recited verbatim. One suspects "Laid Bare" is kind of like those dinosaurs in "Jurassic Park." They were created with incomplete DNA, with frog blood filling in the missing gaps. Thus, a monster has been created equal parts beautiful, horrifying and repulsive.

Towards the end of Gilmore's unforgettable work, there's a passage where he seems to be winking at the audience. While describing Carlos, the roommate of a friend, he says "People who told the truth were fools, Carlos said. He believed lying was more creative than telling the truth. He'd just sit around making up stories to get people to think of him as an intelligent and important person. After he got that stuff published, he got some fat checks. He didn't care that anyone thought he was a fake. He was going to keep on lying because a superior man never tells the truth - he tells what he wants to be the truth."

Gilmore's work may indeed be baloney. If so, it's well-written baloney. Burn, Gilmore, burn.

5 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE BEST HOLLYWOOD MEMOIRS EVER PENNED! .......2006-07-07

LAID BARE was given to me by movie director Curtis Harrington who had purchased a stack to pass out to friends. I have done the same: bought a stack and am passing them out. This is Hollywood in the Golden Age, told by one on the inside and half the time on the outside (via the nature of the movie business!). A boldly written, brilliantly penned memoir from around 1950 until about 1970 (and Jim Morrison!), giving us glimpses of the collapse of the major studios. John Gilmore has lived it, worked it from the start (Republic Studios),desired it, sought a special kind of fame and was so steeped in the Hollywood Mystique he seems a walking encyclopedia of the bright and dark side of L.A., and its heartbeat: Hollywood. Gilmore was born and raised in Hollywood, was pals with James Dean, was a bedtime mate of Jean Seberg and a host of other starlets, worked with talents like Barbara Stanwyck, Joan Fontaine, Peter Lorre, was mentored by Ida Lupino and John Hodiak, was acquainted with Marilyn Monroe, Jane Russel, Jayne Mansfield and Mamie Van Doren, and far from least, Brigitte Bardot. Gilmore tells all in this daring, piercing memoir of a highly creative talent wandering through twenty-plus years of Hollywood's cold days and hot nights, yearning to make it big time but finding survival in the drivers seat insterad of drugs, booze and death. I didn't want the book to end and I wish there were more!

4 out of 5 stars I bought his book because he wrote about James Dean.......2005-09-21

However, it was a fascinating book chock full of information about many actors. Once you begin you must read until the last page. Very informative, but dark book dealing with the seamier side of personalities.

Manichaeans believe that the world is divided between good and evil. Guitar owners believe that it's divided between Gibsons and Fenders. Members of the latter camp will want to own this compilation of behind-the-scenes testimony by Leo Fender's right-hand man. Forrest White joined the Fender Electric Instrument Company in 1954, and helped develop such iconic models as the Telecaster, Stratocaster, and Precision Bass. As a writer, White is strictly a nuts-and-bolts man--his main concern is to set the record straight and debunk what he sees as a plague of "Fender fictions." But there's still considerable amusement to be had, whether he's recounting the epithets applied to the fledgling Telecaster ("canoe paddle" and "toilet seat with strings") or quoting Leo Fender on the factory's pre-OSHA working conditions: "Around 1949, we started to put an acetate finish on the lap model Hawaiian steel guitar bodies; and to keep the acetate warm, we kept it near an open gas flame. I guess if anything ever happened, we would have blown that building over the moon. Actually, it was so bad that when the fire inspector came, he just looked in the door and ran off to call us at the nearest pay phone, he was so scared." Sure, sure, as long as it's got that twang.

Imagine going into a bar and pulling up next to a talkative old fellow who happens to have worked with Leo Fender for many years. With only a couple beers and a little prodding, the guy goes on and on.
He was there, he knows his stuff. Not a polished conversationalist or an ivy league exec. More Studs Turkel than William Buckley.

That's pretty much what it's like reading this book.

As others have pointed out, Mr. White has axes to grind, horns to toot, old wounds that didn't heal and personal favorites. It's part of the package, undisguised.

Think of it as an oral history. Tidbits and facts scattered among the stories you're not likely to get elsewhere. The book is much stronger in the early, glory days of Fender and a bit hurried after that and downright cautious when dealing with the Music Man and G&L phase. Some aggrivating habbits, such as putting some characters down then going on the defensive about it, gets a litte tiring. But overall a reliable recounting of the early days and a good read - or a conversation over a couple beers (PBR, most likely).

5 out of 5 stars The Real Fender Music Story, as it happened.......2006-09-22

I could not put this book down! Maybe it is because I am a Fender guitar and amp player, through and through, in love with the sound since I first heard those big Showman amps tilted back and the twangy Jazzmasters ringing out through a lush tube reberb. Mr. White tells it like it was, with sensitivity and reverence to all involved, especially Leo Fender. Readers can come along on a wondrous journey through Leo's R & D lab and see how each important guitar was created with input from some top studio and performing musicians. And, sadly, readers can learn about the CBS buy out when Leo's health became a concern for him, and why the quality started to wane after 1965. Readers will have to forgive Mr. White's homey writing style, and his best attempts to remember exact conversations. This, I feel, only adds to the honesty of the account. My only disappointment with the book was the absence of details about amplifier development and models. Readers can get a feel for how Leo invented the first tweed amps for the country pros like Merle Travis and the Bob Wills band, but little else is said about development into the black face, then silver face models. Instead of taking off a star, though, I kept a five star rating becuase this is the only book that proves the history of Fender guitars with personal photos taken by Mr. White. I think the reader can come to his/her own conclusions to the perenial question of where the famous Stratocaster headstock came from, and realize that each guitar grew out of feedback from many people--------Leo was the master that put it all together into a functional, durable design. I should know-----I wouldn't trade my '68 Strat for any guitar in the world.

3 out of 5 stars An informative story told from a very personal point of view.......2001-05-21

This book will be an interesting and educational read for anyone who wants to learn more about the life of Leo Fender and his many innovations in the field of electric musical instruments. The author, Forrest White, traces Fender's career from his early years running a radio repair shop, through his initial struggles to launch his guitar and amplifier business, the later years of dramatic growth and success, the CBS takeover, and Leo Fender's subsequent launch of both Music Man and G&L. Leo Fender is revealed as a risktaker, a tireless innovator, and someone whose products were vastly improved by the fact he listened intently to his musician customers for new ideas. White's book is also chocked full of technical details such as the dates when various products were developed and marketed, specifications of various amps and pickups, and so on.

White is in a good position to tell this story because he spent fourteen years as General Manager of the Fender Electrical Instrument Company, and was Leo Fender's associate for many years thereafter. In fact, in many respects, this book is more about White than it is about Fender. White describes, for example, how he used his organizational skills to bring order to the chaos of Fender's early manufacturing operations. After the CBS takeover of Fender, White tells of how he refused to approve the new company's plans to manufacture solid state amplifiers that, in his view, fell far short of quality standards and were not be worthy of the Fender name (he was right).

While White certainly has many impressive accomplishments to his credit but, as he writes this book, he often seems to overreach to repeat numerous compliments that were paid to him during his career, some of which aren't relevant to the Fender story. The book also includes some venomous barbs for industry people who White felt treated him unfairly or whose work he did not respect. At some points in the book, White is painfully petty, such as when he blames Fender's second wife and others for the fact that Fender did not invite to join with George Fullerton in creating the new G&L guitar company. White writes: "Do you suppose it had anything to with Leo's second marriage?.... Was it because of old resentments from the early Fender years, when I was George [Fullerton]'s boss and struggled with him over manufacturing problems?" That kind of stuff detracts from the book.

I was also somewhat disgusted by White's gratuitous speculation about Fender's physical condition shortly before his death: "He acted like he was under very heavy sedation -- absolutely lethargic," writes White. "I sure hoped that he was not taking more medication than was necessary, because Leo was a proud man, and it must have been very embarrassing for him when he could not carry on an intelligible conversation with his friends." Is it possible that White, who claims to have been one of Fender's closest friends, did not know the man was suffering from Parkinson's Disease, which has exactly the type of devastating neurological symptoms he described?

All of that said, I'm glad Forrest White wrote this book and that I've had an opportunity to read it. In terms of the factual narrative, the book is a time capsule of sorts, taking us back to the Southern California of the late 1940s and early `50s, when rock 'n' roll was young, and there was lots of open space, clean air, and a radio repairman like Leo Fender (who loved Hawaiian music) could branch out to making Hawaiian guitars on the side and amplifiers. In those days, the phone number for Fender's Radio Repair shop was #6 -- that's all, just 6. White tells us of the colorful group of colleagues, coworkers and musicians that surrounded Fender during those early days, including Doc Kaufman, Freddy Tavares, George Fullerton, Dale Hyatt, and so on. There are lots of poignant and funny anecdotes that any lover of Fender instruments will appreciate. White's description of the changes at Fender after the CBS takeover is both savage and witty.

Leo Fender is now seen by many as the Henry Ford of modern electric stringed instruments. He literally invented the modern, fretted electric bass guitar. His amplifiers were rugged, practical, and dependable and some, like the '59 Bassman, have attained almost mythical status for their tone and quality, and are prized by collectors and players alike. Fender's Telecaster and Stratocaster guitars were major design breakthroughs for their time and are probably some of the most copied guitars of all time. They are as popular today as they were almost half a century ago when they were first designed. As Fender's fame grew, some people were apparently taking liberties with company's history, so White decided to write this book and comply with Leo Fender's request to "tell it just like it happened." If you can put up with White's occasionally self-serving narrative and petty barbs, that's just what you'll find.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Book of the Fender Electric Instrument Company.......1998-06-19

Forrest White has written a wonderful account of the relationship he had with Leo Fender, as well as bringing to light, the history as he saw it develop while he was employed with Fender.

This book is a delight to read over and over again. The detail to dates and the explanation of how things happened sets you in each time period as he explains what happened through the years. It also allows you to be in the R&D lab with Leo or in the areas that guitars and amps were being dreamed of to Leo's ingenius research and development to being built into reality. Be there as the Broadcaster changes to the Telecaster and the introduction of the Stratocaster and the Precision Bass.

Enjoyable to read and I couldn't put it down. Thanks Forrest!

Great book! Helps you progress quickly with many examples and exercises. I intend to buy every book in the series!

                    5 out of 5 stars A great help.......2007-06-08

This book has been everything I had hoped for in a beginners tutorial. It presents a little bit of an over view of how the game ought to be played plus some simple down-to-earth techniques. As a bonus, it includes a paper board and stones so the student can examine the techniques (or even play a full game).

I haven't fully digested the book but I'm playing better, already.

4 out of 5 stars A great way to introduce yourself to the game of go........2007-03-23

This book steps through all of the basic strategy of Go. It is well illustrated and written in clear and understandable terms. I reference this book and the others in the series constantly.

My only critque is that, as a series, the books tend to be a bit repetitive and do not delve much into more complicated strategy.

3 out of 5 stars clear but not filling.......2007-03-23

The book is very easy to read. This might be an advantage or a disadvantage., depending on your needs.
(I'm not quite a beginner, so I bought the book number 5.)
Many pages just contain one diagram, which is fine, but does not make for a lot of content.
If you're a serious reader, I'd rather recommend "Elementary Go" series by Kiseido

4 out of 5 stars Learn To Play Go Easily.......2007-02-01

Janice Kim and Jeong Soo-hyun have made and excellent book. I had wanted to play go for a long time, yet I did not know what book to choose. Learn to Play Go: A Master's Guide to the Ultimate Game was very helpful.

The book is organized into chapters, and at the end of each chapter, there are some problems for you to try yourself. The book is very easy to understand, and you feel very satisfied when you successfully answer a question.

You don't have a go board? No problem. There is a go set inside. It has a reversable mat with a 19 by 19, 13 by 13 and a 9 by 9 board. There are also 'stones' made out of a thick paper.

This instructional book has everything from ko and life and death, to information about go history and playing go on the computer. If you have never played go before, definately buy this book.

                      Book Description

Three-dimensional synthetic reincarnations of Marilyn Monroe and Humphrey Bogart were created by the authors of this book for their award-winning feature film "Rendez-vous à Montréal". The book explains in detail with numerous drawings and color pictures how such films are produced. The following topics are presented: - Preparation of object construction: documentation search, plaster models preparation - Object construction, digitizing, modeling - Body animation: walk - Hand animation and object grasping - Facial animation: expressions, phonemes and emotions - Choreography: decors, actors, cameras, lights - Realism: colors, lights, shading, shadows, textures - Image recording: special effects.
