Book Description
Educator and activist Paula Ressler knows from experience that students who are marginalized because of sexual orientation, gender, or appearance spend much of their time in high school just trying to survive. The consequences of ignoring these issues can be devastating. In this book she demonstrates how the drama workshop can be a powerful tool to facilitate discussion about topics that have long been suppressed in traditional educational venues and mired in taboo and confusion. She offers an approach to teaching and learning in which participants acquire new knowledge based on experience, not simply transmission.
The book follows Dr. Ressler's practice since 1988, describing the innovative drama work she has done in various educational settings to address lesbian, gay, bisexual, and trans (LGBT) issues. Her practice has integrated educational drama theory; feminist, multicultural, and liberatory theory and pedagogy; and progressive learning and language arts theory. Her particular strength is providing practical, effective, and stimulating strategies for incorporating drama across the curriculum, from English, social studies, art, music, and dance, to physical education, health, and guidance groups.
Teachers need no drama background or extensive knowledge about sexual orientation and gender identity to use this book. Each chapter provides an introduction to the type of drama presented - from simple role plays through complex and extended pieces - along with educational objectives, rationales, resources, and materials needed. Read Ressler and see how transformative drama can be - both academically challenging and personally rewarding for
all participants, whether they are teaching or learning about sexual orientation and gender diversity.

Yowza! Better be a scientist for this one! But a great book. .......2007-05-27
This book is basically a manual for the application of light microscopy and a few other techniques into the field of art authentication. It is very comprehensive and an absolute trove of highly specialized information that is of great value for anyone working in the field. It is all function and no form. In no way is this a story book or a book of abstract forgery anecdotes (although very specific examples of artworks are given)
This book is IN NO WAY meant for the layperson who is casually interested in the various art authentication processes. It isn't an art mystery thriller nor is it a casual read. It is very, very scientific in its construct (which one should expect, given the title) and regularly references words, techniques and phrases that the typical layperson will not fully understand (of which I am one).
With that said, if you are a very serious enthusiast who wants to learn about this very rich yet complex topic, I cannot imagine a book that's better than this one, even though it is quite advanced. While it can be heavy on the technical side, so is the issue to which it seeks to address.
I give this book five stars (which I rarely do) for two reasons. One, I am not capable of making an honest scientific assessment of the information in this book. I would rather err on the side of caution with a favorable rating than a rating that isn't education or valid.
Two, while the book is "above my head" from a science standpoint, I still read it cover to cover and enjoyed every minute of it; running over to the computer and googling certain scientific phraseology that might stand as the only guardian between the known fake and the proven authentic.
In short, I read this book, and I learned. There was no fluff- just pure data and instruction. Great, great book.

Book Description
Master photographer Manly Chin is regarded as the pioneer of camera painting, an art-form that resembles more the traditional paintings of a master artist than photographic work. Using flowers, birds, and fish as his inspiration, Chin creates picture-moods on celluloid as an artist would
create them on silk or rice paper, to create works of art that have been applauded worldwide for the past thirty years.
The Painterly Lens is a representative collection of 150 masterpieces of Chin's unique style. It is this style, coupled with a perceptive eye, imaginative mind, and masterly skills, that first projected Chin into the limelight when he won several top awards at the International Salon of
Photographic Art in 1958. Subsequently, for fourteen consecutive years, he was elected one of the world's ten most outstanding photographers by the American Photographic Society, as well as honored by other photographic societies aroung the world.
With commentary by Chin himself, telling how each shot was created and outlining the technical aspects, The Painterly Lens is an extraordinary foray into the illusive world of camera painting.

Hollywood Haunted - Not So..........2007-06-04
I bought this book because I am intimately familiar with Hollywood and it's hauntings and I have met Marc Wanamaker and have seen some his collection of photographs. I was excited to order the book and couldn't wait to get it home.
I have to say that I was disappointed for a few reasons: First: Marc Wanamaker, as owner and founder of Bison Archives, has access to some of the most interesting and detailed photographs in Hollywood history and HH ended up with so few benign photographs and then they were blurry images due to the printing style of the book. Second: the stories were told in such a simple manner with few details. There seemed to be little background research; one of us could have written similar one and two page 'stories' based on what we have watched on television. Third: having worked at a haunted studio and hotel in Hollywood there are many more interesting stories to be told than the ones that were written in HH: for instance: Lionel Barrymore still shows up at the Sunset Marquis, sleeping in beds and scaring bellboys (he lived in one of the Villas many years ago), guests' things disappearing and then reappearing days later, picture frames flying across the room while famous guests are sleeping, etc. At Raleigh Studios there are many stories, like the multiple sightings of a woman in white, flowing gowns walking around the original set of "Ramona" now the studio's cafe. Employees seeing a man and woman in period garb walking down a hallway right past them and then fading into nothing. Stage 5's many sightings, etc. There are many more stories with many more details to be told about haunted Hollywood.
It's a pretty book, and like others have written before me, it is a nice coffee table, fast-glance type of book, but definitely not one for the avid ghost/Hollywood history buff.
My wish would be for a more detailed book with lots more pictures.
Ghosts of Hollywood.......2004-05-04
Haunted Hollywood has been discussed and presented on cable network, E! And various other channels such as History Channel, A&E, Entertainment Tonight, Unsolved Mysteries and other entertainment news programs. There are many websites, which gives the reader plenty of information. This book contains limited information and falls short of satisfying real ghost enthusiasts. The author could have expanded to include more haunted stories and perhaps more details. The reader could invest his/her money on something else and read from websites.
Spine tingling! Dont read alone!!!.......2003-12-28
Uhhh! Jacobson covers a broad spectrum of freaky fright starlitghts on this one. Bella grabbing the wheel of his hearse for one last stroll down Hollywood and Vine. The now Comedy Store that used to be the notorious mob affiliated Ciro's where such a dark specter lurks even a Vietnam vet can still barely talk about it to this day. The house where Sharon Tate saw a vision of her grisly end. And even the Holly Mont haunting's were the famed paranormal investigator Barry Taff couldnt get enough of the ghostly goings on. Especially when a lady who lived blocks from the homes called him weeks after the studies asking why he had left a note in her home when he had in fact left the note in the Holy Mont home. Ahhh, dont read at night or when you are alone in the house!!
Ghosts, ghouls make a fun read.......2003-03-14
I really enjoyed this book by Laurie Jacobson. Her writing style is good, and she keeps the book moving along with stories of ghostly goings on in Hollywood. It is a fun read. Enjoy!!!!
If you love stories of old Hollywood - buy this book!!!!.......2003-02-13
Hollywood Haunted: A Ghostly Tour of Filmland by Laurie Jacobson and Marc Wanamaker is first rate in recounting ghostly tales of the bygone era of classic Hollywood. Jacobson and Wanamaker grasp the reader from the very first page and keep you on the edge of your seat right until the end! I felt as if I was with Jacobson behind the movie screen at Grauman's Chinese Theatre as she grippingly recounts her encounter with the Theatre's own supernatural guest. I highly recommend this book if you are a fan of classic Hollywood and great ghost stories.

A great coursebook.......2007-01-12
My chessclub now uses this to teach new people the game. GM Alburt provides great insight and an easy to follow course. Easily gets a beginner to the 1400-1600 range. Teaching with it is great review for a more skilled player. Plus, there are some things a better player coming up through the American chess system will find useful.
Lev Alburt's materials work! TRUST ME! I KNOW!.......2005-12-08
I bought the first and second volumes of Lev Alburt's chess course. The first one, I ended up teaching my little brother, and he learned how to play chess up to the intermediate level. Oddly, I had learned most of volume I throughout playing 20 years of chess. At 34, I managed to buy volume II, and it took me a little over a month to complete the volume II. It taught me endgame knowledge I was not incorporating into my play. Something extremely important! It also taught me what I need to know to get to my desired 1800 strength. I now play with great insight into the endgame and know that opening is minor to the class player. I discover tactics work better. GM Alburt also autographed my first copy, as I remember. :) Plainly put, I do not see how anyone anywhere cannot reach at least a 1500 USCF playing strength if they truly live and study Alburt's two volumes of the Comprehensive Chess Course. And, if someone truly mastered all the materials in volumes I and II - incorporating them all into their play (including all the ideas in the 100 annotated games) - there would be no surprise if they reached an 1800 A-Class strength. I have noticed a difference in my chess already by 100 points, and I was rated in the 1400s. Now, my chess has climbed into the 1500s, and continues to grow! It would be in the 1600s if I played all my games at my full strength. Thank you Lev Alburt for such an outstanding set of books! I just recently purchased Tactics for the Tournament player - the third book which takes you beyond A&B class player. 1800 here I come! Bucky Adams
Slow Methods Using Old Communist Way of Thinking.......2005-01-31
I am both a history and chess person. And, I learned in school that using both chess and the making of jam has a lot to do with each other in the way Russia was run under communism. The Government supported chess and wanted every kid to learn (this was good!). But because they didn't have enough chess teachers to go around teaching every kid at every school they needed a simple way for teachers to teach the masses. The answer was a slow way to get teachers to read material and go through things step by step. So there was a method for teachers who knew little or nothing about chess.
Now if you introduced chess to every kid in the United States this way and then had the good teachers work with the ones that show talant then you would produce far more grandmasters than any other country by far. Russians didn't dominate the world by the quality of teaching, but by sheer numbers. Actually this is the communist way (which worked) to defeat Germany in World War Two. They sacrificed about 10 Russian Soldiers for every 1 German Soldier in mass assualts. They could afford the lives and the method to win was not because of superior strategy but because of sheer numbers they could afford to lose. Now look at Germany and look at Russia. Who really won WW2? Germany is rich and now Russia is a disaster because of their entire communist system. It will take them many more years to get out of their mess. Russian Grandmasters have moved from Russia to get away from their poverty.
This book takes the old outmoded way of teaching chess to the masses and trys to dump it on you, trying to tell you because Russian dominated the chess world this must be good.
Just ask Fischer, who may not really be a chess teacher, but he put communist Russia to shame.
The writers of this book were born and raised in communist Russian. Though good players they lack efficient teaching skills. Chess itself doesn't have anything to do with communism. But teaching methods do.
I liked it.......2005-01-28
I liked it because it has a lot of things to learn from in it. I didnot find it entertaining but the things it covers are good.
Lacks Organization and much more.......2005-01-26
This book looks very impressive when you see it in bookstore - it is big. But I learned my lesson as big doesn't mean it is great. When I got into the material I suddenly discovered that there was an extreme lack of organization. Daa, the book didn't explain what the objective of the game was at the very beginning. It seemed like a person from another country wrote this book with a lack of command of the English Language, then flip flopped around. Well, in looking at this book further and looking at some of the other reviews, I suddenly realized that this book was written as if it was for teachers who didn't know much about chess to introduce them to a classroom. Now this may not sound too bad. However, the problem with is is that it takes things so slowly and out of the order that an experienced chess teacher would use that you have the MOST POORLY WRITTEN BEGINNER'S BOOK ON THE FACE OF THE EARTH. How do I know this? Well, I made an issue of going out and getting several other books that were popular (yes, you might argue 'not every other one' but at least I got what is considered best by popularity to compare). So I got 'Starting Chess', 'Chess For Juniors', 'Chess For Dummies' and 'Idiots Guide to Chess'. Here is what I found - CHESS FOR JUNIORS was the most simple and most easy book of them all to understand though it may not have had as many pages a child of say eight could read it and fully understand it. I ranked this as best. I personally recommend this book as best for even an adult. Now adults would probably benefit most by either getting 'Chess For Juniors' or 'Idiots Guide to Chess'. The Idiots Guide is well organized and though not as easy to understand as 'Chess For Juniors' it does a good job. The 'Chess for Dummy's' book is not very well organized or written, but better for an adult than the Comprehensive Chess Courese. As a second best book for Children, but not so easy for Children themselves to Learn from (a parent should help) I suggest 'Starting Chess'. I spent some good time looking over these books and hope this review will be helpful for someone looking for a beginning book.

It would be no exaggeration to say that the Fourth Season of Doctor Who was probably the most critical time in the show's history. After a very close-kept secret, on November 5th, 1966, a new Doctor was revealed to the public in the form of Patrick Troughton. Doctor Who had somehow changed...
