Translated from the French, trompe l'oeil means "deceive the eye," and The Art of Illusion by English artist Janet Shearer shows you how to paint trompe l'oeil murals in your own home. These illusionary murals are surprising "visual jokes" meant to deceive the viewer. As Shearer counsels, "The joke is only effective if you do it well." Projects range from smaller, more focused studies, such as an amusing trio of guinea hens perched above a doorway, to complex, large-scale designs such as a set of spacious, elegant arches that open onto mysterious rooms. You can create fabric or stonework impressions, and even employ trompe l'oeil effects upon furniture. Shearer covers design, perspective, preparation, and equipment before introducing techniques of mural painting. This book will prove a delight not only to interior designers, but to anyone who seeks the challenge of creating bold, imaginative visual effects in their own houses. --Mary Ribesky

Excellent.......2007-07-19
Janet Shearer is a fabulous artist, who is not intimidating in her instruction. She is willing to share her techniques and is very encouraging in her belief that her student can do the same type of work. She does not take herself seriously which adds to the fun of it all. After reading her book, a person just wants to learn more. But most of all, one comes away with a confidence that with practice, one can paint a mural approaching Shearer's quality.
Excellent.......2006-07-03
Very well done and once you get into the actual step by step photographs it is excellent.
For Adventurous Beginners to Advanced Painters.......2005-12-23
I enjoyed this book even though it was much more advanced than my own skill level. I still plan on attempting some of these projects. I'm not going to let a little thing like skill stop me! LOL. Actually, I read a faux painting book that recommended practice on a piece of board or the walls in your garage before trying a new technique, so my garage will probably be covered with various murals and faux techniques.
I first plan on using a projector to get the basic outline and proportions correct then to use the instructions in this book to get the shading and paint techniques just right.
I've taken some classes in the past, watercolor, oil, etc. but I am not artistically gifted. I thought the author did a good job in the prep chapters on equipment, basic instructions, preparation and design/perspective. After this review, she begins several projects. It would have been nice if the first 1-2 projects were at a beginner level and progress to more advanced. I think her murals are very nice even though about half of them are not my own style (several animal/country themes). The photography was great and I though the photos of the steps were clear though it did not take you through every brush stroke. I do think this book is targeted to the intermediate and advanced artist OR for an adventurous beginner.
Start here to become a mural painter.......2005-10-22
Janet Shearer is a very talented mural painter. Her book is wonderful for explaining all you need to start your mural painting journey. She has done fascinating murals: The Monk, Tuscan View, The Arches and others. what the book won't teach you is how to draw...
Realy a must have book for wanna be mural painters.
I have it too.
A must have for artist and beginners alike.......2005-07-20
I am a decorative painter and this was my first book on murals, many followed, but this remained a favorite. It gives You step by step instructions-for less advanced painters, yet it is sophisticated for real artists looking for inspiration, new ideas.
Well, it won't teach You to draw, but if You have any kind of art training,You'll learn easily from this book.Mural painting is not something You learn overnight, but this will be a useful tool
that will answer many of Your technical questions, and grow with You for years to come.

Pictorial of Dreadnoughts under construction.......2004-07-30
Naval enthusiasts should be so lucky that new volumes on World War 1 Dreadnoughts are still being produced. This 1998 volume contains arresting pictures covering all aspects of dreadnought construction in British yards. The accompanying text also is very interesting.
There are several pages containing descriptions of trade union working practices which I found myself skipping over. Perhaps a fifth of the book is given over to an Appendix, in which are rudimentary line drawings of British dreadnoughts along with the usual facts and figures universally available. Surely this space could have contained additional photos. In addition, there are a couple of editing errors involving photographs showing up twice, and with incorrect captions.

Book Description
Casino Gambling can increase your chances of winning and decrease your chances of losing in your next casino session.
Chapters 9 - 14, a lesson on dice control, shows you how to create your own advantage over the casino by minimizing the chances of throwing the losing seven and how to throw the long hand and score on your point numbers. The winning craps system is in Chapter 12 -- dice set, grip, focus and throw -- in words and pictures. Read it and use the winning craps system to create own edge over the casino.
Chapters 3 - 8, reveal the clues and a winning gambling system for finding winning blackjack tables. Sit down at one of these tables with an excellent chance of winning.
Chapters 15 - 17 define exactly what a roulette dealer signature is and describe the three types of dealer signatures (predictable patterns).
Chapter 17 presents a winning gambling system to enable you to detect and exploit a dealer signature and Get an Edge at roulette.
Chapter 2 details the eight decisions you make in every casino gambling session; learn how to make them the right way to maximize your chances of winning and minimize your chances of losing in each of your casino gambling sessions.
Chapters 4, 5 and 6 explain why card counting in blackjack doesn't always work the way it's supposed to and disclose how to avoid losing on the high count hands; i.e., when to bet up and when not to bet up on the high-count hands.
Chapter 18 contains an interesting story about The Streak and describes a betting strategy to exploit player/dealer patterns in the game of baccarat.
If you gamble on the Internet, don't make that next click until you read Chapter 21 to learn how to avoid the pitfalls and exploit the winning possibilities.
Before your next trip or any trip to the casinos, be sure to review the 16 axioms of successful casino gambling described in Chapter 2.
If you're planning a trip to Vegas or any other casino gambling destination and want some quick and easy-to-follow advice to give you a good shot at coming home a winner: Read Chapter 7 for blackjack advice, Chapter 13 for craps advice, Chapter 17 for roulette advice, Chapter 18 for baccarat advice or Chapter 19 for advice on the popular variations of casino poker.

Amazon is confused.......2005-01-30
I looked at this listing and found that the description was for the "paperback" version. Well this book, "Casino Gambling: Winning Techniques for Craps, Roulette, Baccarat and Blackjack" (C)1982-3 is said to contain chapters with silliness like how to control dice and spot a roulette wheel. That description is NOT for this book! It is for a book called "Casino Gambling : A Winner's Guide to Blackjack, Craps, Roulette, Baccarat, and Casino Poker" (C)2000. The newer book lists several authors. The added sections must be from the new authors and account for the lame "beat the system" advice. The 1983 book is very solid with excellent math and logic only! It tells you up front that you can't get an edge on a casino but shows you exactly what the house edge is on every single bet. This makes you an informed consumer at a casino. Such a book is refreshing in a sea of books about gaming that purport to give you a "secret" to gain riches. HA! The best you can do in a casino is either get up early and stop, (but you could also get down early) or play smart and loose small amounts slowly while enjoying the game and maybe some free drinks. If you want to learn to play casino games and want the straight info about the risks of each play, this book is perfect. If you want to hear a fairytale about how to "beat the house" look any ware else. PS this book IS paperback as well. ISBN: 039950656X
Should be listed in humor category.......2004-08-25
This book is great, it's very funny and will provide many laughs. Unfortunately, if you are looking to read a book on how to gamble well, this is not it.
This book states how to beat Craps (controlled rolling of the dice to land on certain numbers), Blackjack (taking advantage of non-random shuffling and finding groups of high and low cards), and Roulette (watching for a zone on the wheel where the ball repeatedly falls due to the dealer throwing the ball with the same speed).
These methods of how to beat the casino are all completely irrational, unattainable, and at times just plain ridiculous.
If you could beat craps by controlled throwing of the dice, don't you think the casinos would recognize this and change their dice rolling procedures. To avoid having controlled rolls is the exact reason is why they make you hit the back wall in the first place.
If you could beat roullette by taking advantage of dealer memory, where they always throw the ball with the same speed and therefore produces certain zones on the wheel that are hit consistently, don't you think the casino would recognize that certain numbers hit more frequently and change their procedures. The obvious fact that the Author fails to mention is that in order for this method to work, the dealer would always have to throw the ball with the exact same speed and he/she would always have to release it at the exact same spot on the wheel...which is nearly impossible or at least so low a percentage, that I would not bet on it!
The Blackjack stategy is the only one that even resembles rational thought, but even this method of taking advantage of non-random shuffling and finding pockets of either high or low cards and then increasing or decreasing your bet accordingly fails to mention one obvious fact. Even if you do see pockets of high or low cards, you never know how big the pocket is...you could see two hands of all high cards, change your bet accordingly, then the next hand could change to a pocket of low cards.
In summary, this book tells you how the Author consistently beats the casino using these methods...I think the Author needs to realize that he is just getting lucky using his less than scientific systems. If you want to read a book on how to gamble well you should pick one that explains how to minimize your losses, by decreasing the house edge. At least find one that is non-fiction!
Good Book!.......2004-08-19
This book helped me incredibly understand the odds and help beat the casino at their games. I recommend it.
An excellent handbook.......2004-02-01
I found this a delightful book. It's very easy to read, covers all the major games, and contains lots of practical, useful advice.
And at less than $20, it's excellent value for money.
My only criticism (a very minor one) is that the Roulette section focuses mainly the "double-zero" wheel, used in the USA. The "single zero" wheel used in Europe and in Australia, doesn't get much coverage.
However, this is a minor issue. Overall I found this an excellent book, containing a wealth of useful advice.

The Book That Never Left My Mind's Eye.......2000-03-27
I first read "B-Ball: The Team That Never Lost A Game" when I was in my seventh grade English class. We had to choose a book to read from the teacher's collection, and this one just drew me in. The title is what caught my attention. What sports fanatic wouldn't want to read about some incredible basketball team that could never be beaten? It's seemed too good to be true. I began to read this book and quickly realized that this team was a different type of team. It was a recreational league team that was comprised completely of mentally challenged players. The author of this book was the coach of team. He took the job having never dealt with these types of people before. In their first practice he quickly became frustrated that the team members had no real sense of competition and didn't understand his ideals of how to play basketball correctly. In the beginning he nearly quit, but hung on because he felt something deep down that told him to keep trying. He continued with his team and his practices. They played their first game, and to his surprise, the coaches of the other teams in their league, also comprised of mentally challenged individuals, did not keep score, and played for fun. After weeks of these games, the author/coach came to the realization that basketball is to be played for fun, not for competion, for recognition, or for money. As long as everyone had fun, everyone was a winner. He continued coaching his team through the years, and his team continued winning. They eventually broadened their competition, and played regular school teams, high school teams, and other recreational teams made up of players who were not mentally challenged. Each and every game however, they found a way for every player on both times to just enjoy themselves as much as possible. And in this way, the team won every game they played. Along with the focus on the basketball aspect of this book, other areas were covered. How people dealt with these mentally challenged basketball players was shown well, and the problems that the coach and his players had to deal with to play some of the teams they did was the focal point of the book. It was a great book about how one can deal with a mental disability, and still have the time of their life. I last read this book nearly four years ago, but I still remember it vividly in my mind. I read it more than once in that English class in 7th grade; I probably read it 10 times. I am not a huge fan of books, but I loved this one. I it one of my favorite books of all time, and I feel that everyone should read it. If you can find a copy of it, read "B-Ball: The Team That Never Lost A Game".
