4 out of 5 stars The Art of Shapes.......2006-12-21

The shapes described in the book are basic shapes such as the star, heart, square, etc... but also some interesting shapes such as octagon, cylinder etc.. they are taken from the actual artwork and put into shape form. For example, Ellsworth Kelly: Colors for a large wall takes a blue square from his artwork.

The book is simply stated. It shows the artwork and describes it in a little caption and on another page it shows the shape. It's an interesting take on teaching children their shapes as well as art that is not from more familiar artists like matisse and picasso.

I think these books make great pieces to show off in a modern style toddler room or even to keep out on the coffee table.

P.S. My daughter enjoyed turning each page learning abput each shape. The book is also just her size. A typical childrens board book size 5x5?

5 out of 5 stars A wonderfully intelligent and beautifully produced book.......1998-10-28

THE ART OF SHAPES is the perfect way to introduce children to the world of modern and contemporary art. It is instructive in a fun way. The book is beautifully produced and a pleasure to browse through -- even for adults!

5 out of 5 stars Great introduction to art for adults and children........1998-10-09

This wonderful book caught my eye on a store shelf. My son regularly selects it when its time to read. Page after page he finds something new to tell me about, enthusiastically pointing out what caught his attention. This art book holds up well under a young child's grip. The thick cardboard pages make it easy for children to enjoy it on their own. The book is for adults as well. It works on the play table or the coffee table, it looks that good. My wife and I regularly give this book as a gift, and it is well received. You will have to look a long time to find another way to exposure your children (or yourself) to a wide variety of art in such an entertaining and imaginative way.

5 out of 5 stars sheer creative inspiration.......1998-01-20

My one and a half year old son devours books (literally as well as figuratively) but none has been so pleasing to his palate as The Art of Shapes. On one side of the pages of this board book are famous works of modern art by artists from Matisse to Cindy Sherman. On each of the facing pages is a shape (square, circle, cone) that has been extracted from the artwork. My son stares at both the works of art and the shapes with hypnotic intensity, turning the book every which way in order to better imbibe the luscious images. Then when he's done with it, I stare at the art and the shapes, read the illuminating and delightful descriptions of the art, and then stare some more. This very intelligent, beautiful book is the expression of sheer creative inspiration on the part of the authors as well as the artists represented--and it is sure to inspire myriad future Einsteins and O'Keefes. Both my son and I greatly look forward to Steele and Este's next book. Jenny and Tommaso McPhee

                          1 out of 5 stars What a snob!.......2007-01-31

This book aims at the world of film criticism, specialists and pedants like the author. It's so pedantic it stinks. I bet the people who like this kind of literature don't care a fig for what they actually talk about: cinema. Of course I didn't read the whole rug.

Ozu, Bresson and Dreyer made spiritual, religious or... trascendental films as Mr. Schader says. But they made them for the common folk, that is: for the hearts as for the minds of people. Why should there be in the world this kind of pharisees telling us how to interpret things? Ford, who is and was the greatest film director ever once said he was only a guy who made westerns and now come the yuppies like Mr. Schrader messing around, complicating things.

From page 5 to 12 the perpetrator of this book digs into the meaning of 'trascendentalism'. Why not explain the meaning of 'meaning' as well?

I didn't get to know anything interesting from this brick.

5 out of 5 stars a simple and great book.......2006-03-06

Paul Schrader tells us what transcendental/transcendent means and what's transcendental style in movies. He tells all that information in a simple style and gives important analyses from Ozu's, Bresson's and Dreyer's films..

                          1 out of 5 stars Transcendental Twaddle.......2003-06-12

For some reason or other, this book remains, thirty years after its publishing, an authoritative introduction for newcomers to Bresson and Ozu (not so much to Dreyer). Having spent several years studying French and English-language Bresson scholarship and criticism, I must encourage those who are looking for a reliable way to 'insert' themselves into Bresson's films to begin elsewhere. Schrader's book has not aged gracefully.

Its primary shortcoming is that, in the case of the chapter on Bresson, it is sadly outdated. First and foremost, for a book that boasts to offer a 'theory' of (transcendental) style, it offers little more than an interpretation of a select group of Bresson's films (the so-called 'Prison Cycle') and their stylistic tendencies. While some of these stylistic observations remain strong, they are covered over with the most outrageous of readings of Bresson's film that they themselves lose their initial value. Published in 1972, the theory that Bresson's style is adapted to 'express' the 'Holy' fails to account for the filmmaker's later, almost atheistic, color work, like 'Lancelot du Lac,' 'Le Diable, Probablement' and 'L'Argent.' In order to convince us that this theory applies, Schrader would have to write a new edition of the book, which would have to make sense of the 'anti-transcendental' leanings of the last stage of Bresson's career. I doubt whether this could be accomplished. He would also, I believe, need to address an issue raised by David Bordwell in 'Making Meaning,' in the chapter 'Why Not to Read a Film.' Schrader fudges the line between hermeneutics and theory, offering not a 'theory' that makes sense of Bresson's 'style,' but an interpretation that periodically makes use of formal and stylistic observations. In short, there are many shortcomings to Schrader's scholarship, here.

To those new to Bresson, I'd have to suggest a few other texts that are more sober in their methods and conclusions: Kent Jones' Introduction to his BFI Modern Classics book on 'L'Argent,' Andre Bazin's essay on Bresson's style in Volume I of 'What is Cinema?' (which remains not only one of the best pieces on Bresson, but one of Bazin's best as well), and last but not least, the collection of essays edited by James Quandt (particularly the essays by P. Adams Sitney). The best essays on Bresson contextualize his stylistic development, noting that his 'autere' style emerged in part as a response to the French 'cinema de qualite.' Even Manny Farber's short write-up on 'La Femme Douce' in 'Negative Space' is more sound than Schrader's entire chapter on Bresson.

4 out of 5 stars In the beginning was a critic..........2000-09-29

I read this years ago, before Schrader was well known as either a screenwriter or a director, but this book introduced me to the three great filmmakers he analyzes here. Hard to believe the same writer would go on to script TAXI DRIVER, HARDCORE, and RAGING BULL. But after you read this you will see the 'transcendental' element is in all of Schrader's screenplays. This book is not for the "movie buff" but a more scholarly audience. But if you are a Schrader fan, it is a must read.

                          Book Description

It's a little-known fact that Elvis Presley—the most Christian icon of American pop culture—was Jewish. This book provides a behind-the-scenes account of the authors' search, from Israel to Graceland, to find the true roots of the King. With the help of a Hasidic Jewish Elvis impersonator, Dan Hartel, who performs at senior citizens' homes under the stage name "Schmelvis," and an eccentric Orthodox rabbi named Reuben Poupko, the authors trace Elvis's Jewish roots all the way to Israel.

I expected more from the author, as he has proven himself to be an excellent essayist on This American Life. Maybe I would have liked it more if I hadn't already heard some of his better material.

1 out of 5 stars Elvis was not Jewish........2003-06-02

To be Jewish one most either convert or, at a minimum, have a Jewish mother. Elvis did not have a jewish mother. Elvis was not a convert. Elvis was a Christian. He may have had a great-great-grandmother who was Jewish but that does not make one a Jew. The authors obviously had far too much free time on their hands.

I just finished reading Schmelvis, and, it really is a funny, clever little book. It's totally not your run-in-the-mill novel-- it reads like a travel log, with little tidbits from all the characters, and you really get to know them. It's sort of an anti-novel-- a story in search of a story. The characters are so hilariously believable, that you totally believe they have no idea what they're doing or thinking. It's got dialogues from the film, and the director's notes, and random other stuff, like an appendix called "who's who of famous jews." The book totally takes on this distinct personality-- like it's not about elvis presley at all, and not about a static answer, but more about the journey, the getting there. most of all, it made me laugh. i didn't really know what to expect when i picked it up, but this book is totally cool. haven't seen the film yet, but i totally want to now.

                          4 out of 5 stars Hilarious!.......2002-05-22

This books is really, really funny. Not really about Elvis' Jewish roots but more of a quest for identity. Composed of script bits from the film's (of the same name) production, entries in journals, and little anecdotes about the cast and crew, this book is really the funniest book I've ever read. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Great for learning bridge conventions.......2006-06-26

A group of 9 women chose this book to study current and popular bridge conventions. We have found that it is thorough and easy to understand. While we are studying each convention, we are doing as Root says, to take the ones that we wish to incorporate into our own bridge play and reject those that we do not wish to use. I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to clarify the many bridge conventions that are being used today. Even if you don't use a convention yourself it is certainly wise to know about it when you are in competition with others.

                          5 out of 5 stars A MUST OWN book.......2006-03-25

Not only are many conventions covered, they are covered well. I like the authors style, and how they go through the entire sequence of bids. You will be able to use the Convention, ratehr than think you know it only to be surprised by some mystery sequence.

Almost 20 years old, still holding its own.

5 out of 5 stars How the convention works, in depth, not just the first response.......2006-03-03

Ever sit down with a pick up pard, and agree on a convention, and sure enough it comes up in play? The convention is bid, pard makes a response, and then ??? Do you both know all the follow up bids? If not, then don't bother using the convention, the bad results will cancel out the good, and you will be frustrated.

What I liked about this book:
                          1) it covers a wide range of commonly used conventions. It may not have the absolute newest, but overall it covers many of them. (Also take a look at Mike Lawrence's Conventions)

                          2) It covers not just the first response, but all the additional responses.

                          3) The authors offer their opinion on the value of the conventions, and have a 1,2,3 star rating scale as to complexity/need.

                          4) its well written, clear, and thorough.

When I have a question on a Convention I first try Mike Lawrence's Conventions and this book.

Note that there's a new edition coming out in March, 2002, and if I were you I'd wait for it.

But otherwise, it's great. This is my favorite guide to BtVS, and I've looked at all of them.

this review book is unlike others out there, while it admittedly has a british bias, i found it to be easily readable and refreshing. it offers a lot of information not found in other buffy books- such as fashion critiques, pop culture references, etc.

There are a few problems like lack of pictures, not covering the full 7 seasons of Buffy and no coverage of Angel the series. But these few problems do not detract from how great fans will find this book.

while this may be too much for a casual viewer, i'm sure all buffy fans would want to add this to there collection!

                                        5 out of 5 stars Staked Gold........2000-06-12

A refreshing change to stuffy old Guides to T.V show. I especially loved the fashion reports on each episode listed. It was well written, and achieved a funny, interesting, information packed guide to the worlds greatest T.V. shows! (Except for Angel)The only thing I could fault(and I am very, very picky) was the lack of pictures.

5 out of 5 stars It slays me (Corny, I know....).......2000-04-21

This is a really good guide to Buffy. I just started watching the show at the end of last season and this book helped me catch up with the seasons I missed plus explained the episodes I saw. It also gives descriptions of the novels, the movie, and the unaired pilot episode that was used to bring advertisers to the show. I highly recommend this book to any and all Buffy fans.
