This collection of work from New Yorker cartoonist George Booth is an absolute hoot. His drawings are insanely, gloriously cluttered. Motors, old tires, and hundreds of cats tumble out of corners and spread as far as the eye can see. Missouri native Booth tends toward affectionate bits of Americana: people living in a perpetual state of yard sale, a beleaguered husband doing slow burns behind his newspaper, and a particularly enthusiastic amateur band. Booth's characters exhibit a truly wonderful can-do spirit that flies in the face of logic--one cannot help but root for Mr. Pudney and his scheme to breed small horses as household pets. Interviews with Booth are dispersed throughout the book, giving a nice glimpse of the mind behind the work, but his laugh-out-loud cartoons more than stand on their own. --Ali Davis

Book Description

Cartoonists are finally getting their due. Compiled and edited by Lee Lorenz, former art editor of The New Yorker and an acclaimed cartoonist in his own right, The Essential Cartoonists library is a celebration of this unique visual art form. Each volume focuses on one truly outstanding artist and features approximately 150 of the artist's best cartoons, as well as insight into background, influences, inspirations, working habits, and more. Launching the series: The Essential George Booth and The Essential Charles Barsotti. In Booth, Lorenz traces the career of this New Yorker icon. Known primarily for his unmistakable characters--Mr. Ferguson, the violin-playing Mrs. Rittenhouse, curmudgeons with their crazed dogs and unruly profusion of cats--Booth combines warmth, energy, quirkiness, and amazing detail. Like another famous Missourian, Mark Twain, Booth has never lost that flavor of small-town eccentricity--or the laugh-out-loud humor that defines his work.

5 out of 5 stars Inspired Seinfeld!.......2004-11-26

I am a Booth FREAK. His hyper-detailed observations of "nothing" and "new yorkers" obviously influenced the sitcom "Seinfeld."

Also, anyone who loves animals to an almost "nutty" degree will appreciate the emotional dependence depicted in these little (cracked) windows on life.

Another book with humorous cats worth having is Henry Beard's "French For Cats;" Booth would approve!

5 out of 5 stars By George, it's Booth.......2000-07-26

Lee Lorenz has indeed captured the essential George Booth. Not only has he given Booth's adoring fans a beautiful collection of his work, he introduces us to the sources of his brilliance - his smart, talented, humorous, proudly individualistic parents - and he spices the book with just the right number and types of Boothianic stories to make us yearn for more. This is a rare find.

5 out of 5 stars George Booth is a National Treasure.......1999-06-25

This collection of Booth cartoons is brilliant and off the wall. There is no end to the "windmills of his mind". I bought two copies to share with my similarly weird friends and may buy more. This man knows cats and a whole lot about the world that I've always wondered about. Keep on truckin' Mrs. Ritterhouse!

5 out of 5 stars A fruitful European/Native American collaboration.......2005-06-03

This 252-page large format book is a wonderful overview of the history, use and collection of Indian "trade blankets", the most famous of which are those made by Pendleton Woolen Mills. Although seemingly a coffee table book, it is also a good reference for many blanket patterns.

From the earliest says of interactions between Europeans and Native Americans blankets played a major role in trans-cultural trade. The manufactured woolen blankets were thicker, warmer and more colorful than traditional Indian blankets laboriously made from woven animal hair. The colorful patterns became particularly important to the Indians who relied on the blankets as "robes" or overcoats for social occasions and ceremonies. The Indians draped the blankets over their shoulders and held them in place by clasping the edges together with one hand. Antique blankets that were actually used by an Indian will be heavily worn at the location where the edges were grasped.

The trade blanket is a rare instance of a positive, mutually beneficial collaboration between European Americans and Native Americans. The Indians received a superior product that enhanced their lives and the Europeans responded by developing patterns derived from, but not really replicating, traditional Indian decorative themes. Pendleton still manufactures these blankets and nearly half are still purchased by Native Americans.

The book contains 60 full-page or two-page color photographs of classic trade blankets, presumably from the collection of Dale Chihuly, the famous Seattle glass artist. There are also 24 classic black and white photographs that show Indians wearing trade blankets in the late 1800s and early 1900s. And there are large color photographs of wonderful trade blanket-inspired glass art Mr. Chihuly created.

The text includes essays by Mr. Chihuly on collecting blankets and how the blankets influenced his art. There is also an essay by an historian on the history of the blankets, their manufacturers and trading them with the Indians from the 1600s to the present.

Highly recommended to anyone interested in Native American history or folk arts in general. There is an outstanding image-keyed index to the blankets, classic photos and glass art.

4 out of 5 stars An Interesting Book.......2002-02-24

Chiluly's Pendletons is an interesting book. It shows the early career of Dale Chiluly-who has become one of the pre-eminent artists in America. Chiluly's trademark is his flamboyent, contorted glassworks, which are displayed around the world.

This book consists of two parts: The first part shows pictures of trade blankets. The second part shows how Chiluly incorporated ideas from his interests in Native American Arts into his early work...during his starving artists phase.

Chiluly was interested fiber arts, he could not afford the expensive native American blankets; so he collected indian trade blankets...the most enduring trade blanket manufacturer being the Pendleton Woolen Mills. As his fame and fortune grew; so to did his collection.

This is a very good book for people who wish to study how artists evolve in their work. You have a nice juxtaposition of indian art, photographs of native Americans, and pictures of Chiluly's earlier works.

What the book is not: It is not an adequate scholarly treatise on trade blankets (it has a lot of nice pictures). The book shows his earlier works. These are all well done, but not quite as large and flamboyent as you might see in his later periods.

All in all, I give the book high marks. Chiluly fans will enjoy this coffee table book. It helps you see the influences on this artist. It will also get you interested in trade blankets.

1 out of 5 stars Dale Chihuly should stick to what he knows best--glass.......2001-09-09

If you want to know about Native American trading blankets your money would be better spent on Kapoun's book titled "Language of the Robe" which tells it more like it is. I believe that Chihuly purchased the Kapoun's collection and became an overnight authority on the subject, if you catch my drift!
I have photographed Pendleton blankets for years, and Chihuly and Lohrmann should be more accurate in their detailing of what is and isn't made by the Pendleton Woolen Mills. The photos are good, but there is still room for someone to do a thorough and interesting book on this very important topic. This isn't the one to waste money on, in my opinion.

5 out of 5 stars More than Art.......2001-03-30

My comments to distinguish what this book plays in the world of contemporary art, is not my intent. Rather I wish to acknowledge the sheer beauty and aesthetic warmth I get from the pages of this large sized book by Dale Chihuly. The rich and colorful geometric patterns that record the decoration and simplicity of the Pendleton Blankets is understood and achieved with out the necessity of additional text in the images. The unpretentious or incidental record that these black and white photographs of the American Indian provide as a documentary technic blends well together with sheer beauty of the American Trade blanket designs. The enchantment and functional magic of glass with it's extraordinary range of form and color linking past to the present, is uniquely profound as well. Chihuly brings to this mix of history and art by acknowledging the reader to move effortlessly from textile to photography, to glass. As an artist, Chihuly takes the fundamental and intangible and blends each together in his truly extraordinary glass cylinders to enrich our eyes and spirit. It's quite simply, a beautiful book.

5 out of 5 stars Focusing on American Indian blankets and weavings.......2001-03-02

Dave Chihuly is an American artist known for his physics-defying shapes: Chihuly's Pendletons explores the creations which inspired some of his work, focusing on American Indian blankets and weavings and providing chapters which present the artist's reflections on how Indian works influenced his productions. The full-page color photos are revealing, while the first-person insights are important.

              Book Description

Gluttony, Greed, Sloth, Lust, Pride, Envy, Wrath. A serial killer on a warped mission who turns his victims' "sins" into the means of their murder. Seven (1995) is one of the most acclaimed American films of the 1990s. Starring Morgan Freeman, Brad Pitt, and Kevin Spacey, Seven is the darkest of films. In it performance, cinematography, sound, and plot combine to create a harrowing account of a world beset by an all-encompassing, irremediable wickedness. Richard Dyer explores in turn the questions of sin, story, structure, seriality, sound, sight and salvation, analyzing how Seven both epitomizes and modifies the serial killer genre that is such a feature of recent cinema.

              Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Some Good Points Despite Academic P.C. Drivel.......2006-08-16

The movie Se7en was an instance of a piece of work taking a tired and worn out genre to a whole new level, raising the bar for the genre thereafter. Both the plot and its execution were more intelligent, thought provoking and tightly presented than we are used to for movies with a subject matter open to cheapness and melodramatics.

Richard Dyer analyzes the movie in this monograph published as part of the British Film Institute's Modern Classics series. The movie incorporates the number seven into the details and this book maintains that pattern by presenting the analysis in seven chapters. It begins and ends on strong ground, providing the reader some excellent interpretations of key scenes that will allow a viewer to better appreciate the subtleties of the characters' interactions.

Dyer takes the position that the concept of sin infuses the movie and that this sin is inescapable. The movie is very unAmerican in tone, without even the promise of a happy ending. Interestingly, the producers did want to use a happier ending but this was thankfully vetoed, as Dyer points out, by Brad Pitt, who insisted on the original, darker ending.

The pervasiveness of sin is demonstrated by the two characters representing goodness. Tracy, the wife, is the embodiment of good in the film and we all know what happens to her. Somerset, the older detective, also represents goodness, and although he gets out in one piece, he is unable to stop evil from taking its course. Instead, he can only watch on.

Dyer missteps a couple times in this analysis. One instance of the number seven cropping up relates to the detail that Somerset is seven days from retirement. This is a tired cliche in movies. Dyer attempts to portray this as simply one more instance of the number seven playing in the details. But this cliche is so worn out that it instead feels artificial in a movie this strong.

More problematic is Dyer's devolvement into academic race and gender analyses, a topic even more worn out and cliched than the cop about to retire in a few days time. Although the killer's body count includes four men and three women, Dyer interprets the movie as misogynistic, a conclusion so ridiculous that it takes an intellectual to reach it. He digs himself in deeper by referring to this misogyny as "unthinking." For those not used to academic jargon, allow me to translate. This means that the rest of us uninitiated may not see it, but thankfully we have academic eggheads, who can read sexism into the word "the," to enlighten us. Andrea Dworkin, whose contempt for men was near pathological, is quoted in support.

Even more wince inducing is Dyer's analysis of race. Like much writing of this sort, it is so convoluted that it is difficult to know exactly what to make of it. Perhaps a taste will be sufficient. Most serial killers are white males, a starting point for Dyer on this issue. Dyer's analysis refers not only to the whiteness of serial killing but also (actual phrase) the "serial killingness of whiteness." Sheesh.

Again, the book has strong points and anyone interested in a better understanding of the movie Se7en will benefit from reading it. Simply be aware that Dyer cannot break away from the identity politics so rife in academics and that this detracts from, but does not negate, the utility of this book. It is an example that the best of the British Film Institute books are from social critics and writers outside the academic arena.

              5 out of 5 stars First-rate study of a second-rate film........2002-02-02

If, as I have suggested, the most successful in the BFI Classics and Modern Classics series are those written by critics and academics, than the very best are those by teachers. I would recommend Richard Dyer's brilliant monograph not just to admirers of David Fincher's celebrated film, but to anyone interested in getting the most out of their film-viewing. With facility and clarity, Dyer describes the mechanics of film-making - editing, sound-design and music, script, casting choices and performance style, camera movements and narrative pace, cinematography, mise-en-scene and imagery, location - and shows how they are all used to create meaning in 'Se7en'.

Dyer calls 'Se7en' 'a landscape of despair, a symphony of sin', a film 'extraordinarily un-American in its pessimism'. Appropriately dividing his study into 7 sibilantly-titled chapters, he examines it from an exhaustive number of angles. 'Se7en' is an archetypal serial killer movie that focuses on white male alienation in contemporary urban society, but is also a denial of the genre, refusing to demonise the murderer, suggesting he is simply an over-enthusiastic law-enforcer with the same attitude to the corruption of modern urban life as the policemen. Dyer shows how, through dialogue, script-structure and editing, the killer is connected to both detectives pursuing him. He shows how Andrew Kevin Walker's brilliantly constructed script both imposes order on unmanagable violence and despair, and denies it (I can't say how just in case you haven't seen the film). He examines the notion of 'sin' in a post-modern, post-religious world, with the minimal possibilities of salvation - religion, culture, human goodness - offered. He is particularly good on his own areas of expertise - star personae, race and sexuality.

Dyer thinks 'Se7en' is a Great Movie that does what Art should, exagerrating or heightening negative feelings about the world we live in that we suppress daily to survive. He treats 'Se7en' so seriously he even includes a 'map' to the narrative like those you get with Dante's 'Divine Comedy', and compares its climactic power to 'King Lear'. But for all his tireless analysis of the film, Dyer simply reinforces what it says on the surface. There is no subtext - every element, from script to theme to technical cinematic realisation simply reflects what we see, the direction dutifully and literally realising the script. Surely a classic film is one open to alternative interpretations, one that can be read against the grain, opening up a space for different kinds of viewing or viewers, one that on each re-viewing will reveal something new, deepening or complicating our first impressions? Nothing Dyer writes with such eloquence or enthusiasm convinces me that 'Se7en' is such a film.

4 out of 5 stars an indepth analysis of this excellent film!.......2001-02-01

the author has some truly fascinating observations about this movie (ie. 7 motif that appears throughout) and goes into great depth about many aspects of this film (ie. the editing of certain scenes and the effect of a specific technique). he also mentions several anecdotal bits of info that are interesting. for example, the studio wanted to soften and Hollywood-ize the ending but Brad Pitt had it in his contract that they could not change the original ending. this is a really good read if you're a fan of the film and also a solid sourcebook if your a film student. it also doesn't hurt that the author has since contributed to several of the audio commentaries on the special edition DVD of the film!

4 out of 5 stars Great Companion to the Movie.......2000-03-12

For any fan of the film "Seven" this book is a great companion piece that discusses different aspects and ideas about the movie, which stood out among the action/horror genre as outstanding. Though sometimes long-winded the book is very interesting in anaylizing the movie and features great color photos.

5 out of 5 stars Religeon and sin.......2000-02-26

If you are not religeous, then don't let that turn you away from this BFI Modern Classic. The whole book is a fascinating look into all of the different aspects of the film. Each chapter goes greatly in depth to the details in the film that matter.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Care and Work Put Into This Book.......2007-08-22

I have to thank Henry Brewer for putting so much comprehensive information and history behind the r & b keyboard. He shows you licks and patterns and explains the different eras of r & b and how it is infused with styles such as gospel and blues.

Henry Brewer makes sure you understand that this book should not be the end of your r & b training. He instructs you books to read to understand the history, videos and recordings so that you can absorb the sound and feel of r & b. Personally just listening to the pianists he suggested and transcribing and learning what they are doing helps a good deal with understanding this style.

I sense that the reviewer who gave this book only 3 stars was looking for a short cut to r & b piano.

3 out of 5 stars Fair, but not good.......2007-02-11

Some helpful examples, but not thorough enough. I was looking for a more comprehensive course, not some bare-bones examples.

                              5 out of 5 stars Phsyics teacher.......2006-11-13

I am a physics teacher in a Mexican high school. We have a big problem in our country because we lack a scientific culture and background. This kind of books are excellent because help to promote scientific ideas without being boring.

4 out of 5 stars A pretty good book, but not for very young children.......2006-03-18

I like to do science experiments with my grandson who is 6, and he loves them, so I try to find easy things to do for him. I was hoping this book would be better suited to our needs, but I feel like it is for older children 10 or 11 and up.
