Freud saw money primarily as a fecal symbol: something to hoarded, treasured, and counted. That probably says more about Freud and the times he lived in than money. A more modern and accurate interpretation of money would be as a symbol of fertility and potency. So perhaps it is no coincidence that until the arrival of Tina Brown in 1992, The New Yorker never ran cartoons about sex. On the other hand, an astonishing 25 per cent of the 13,000 cartoons it has run since 1986 have been about money.
In his introduction to The New Yorker Book of Money Cartoons, Christopher Buckley, editor of Forbes FYI magazine, calls the cartoonists' obsession with business and money as a "sublimation" of this forbidden subject. One cartoon even shows two New Yorkers walking the streets surrounded by signs for money on the shops, billboards, buildings, vendors' umbrellas, and cars. "Remember a few years ago when everything was sex, sex, sex?" says one to the other. Another shows a couple standing at the entrance to a sumptuous living room. "See," says the man, "isn't this better than being happy?"
Of course American culture in general, and New York life in particular, has always been obsessed with money as an index of success, while other, older cultures such as the U.K. at least have a class system to fall back on. Nonetheless, this charming and relevant collection of cartoons will ring bells with anyone who has ever striven in the world of mammon. It's not so much the sort of book you would buy yourself, but it would be a real pleasure to give and to receive. --Alex Benady
Book Description
If money makes the world go 'round, also wreak havoc with our personal worlds, spinning them up and down, topsy turvy, even out of orbit? Money can make us feel happy, sad, elated, stressed, crazed, and a whole host of other emotions. Now, thanks to the brilliant cartoonists of The New Yorker, money can also make us giggle, chuckle, chortle, snicker, and laugh out loud. And, we can better understand why money does all of the above.
This delightful collection about money in our everyday lives features 110 classic cartoons from the cartoonists of The New Yorker -- artists like Charles Addams, George Booth, Roz Chast, Peter Arno, and Gahan Wilson. The wit within its pages will tickle (and often inform) everyone in all walks of life.
Christopher Buckley adds to the merriment with an introductory essay in his own inimitable and hilarious style.

"Three wishes less commission." -- the good fairy.......2000-07-03
I first discovered The New Yorker when I was a teenager. When I saw how many people subscribed to the magazine, I started asking people why they did. Inevitably, the answer was, "For the cartoons." Since then, I have come to realize that The New Yorker is like the hall of fame for cartoonists.
Now, subscriptions to The New Yorker are pretty expensive, so your cost per cartoon can be hefty. Buy this book, and slash your cost per cartoon while increasing your laughs per minute!
Seriously (no kidding), this volume is well done. It leads off with a very witty essay about money from Christopher Buckley of Forbes FYI who introduces some of the cartoons.
As well drawn as these 110 classic cartoons are, you'll find that many of them work as quips. "I married you for your money, Leonard. Where is it?"
The pursuit of money is always tinged with concern about what one is giving up to get it. "Well, anyhow, it sure is handy having my broker right here in my cell."
Money can be a distressing subject as well, too delicate for the dinner table. "Must you tell us our daily share of the national debt every time we sit down to dinner?"
Money is an important subject. One that often comes up in families at other times. "Your mother called to remind you to diversify," says secretary to the executive.
The dog's eye view is helpful also, as one pooch says to the other, "Let's face it -- man's best friend is money."
The challenges of having enough money can bring us all up short. Like the man addressing the bank teller said, "I'd like to bounce a check."
It's no wonder that money has been such a constant source of cartoons in The New Yorker. By putting many of the best ones in this fine book, you'll have a good cross section of the best New Yorker cartoons in recent years.
Have a good laugh! Then stop to think about what stalled thinking you may have about money. Then think about how you could change your beliefs about money to have a better life.
Find that person who dislikes cartoons, they gotta be dead........1999-10-29
As a former business owner, I found that those without a sence of humor soon lost money.
Here is a book of cartoons that will help most everyone laugh, maybe even those on the way to their best tax haven (page 13),or those who want to discuss the portfolio losses with their broker (page 96). There is also some excellent advice to use when responding to those unwanted cold calls (page 46).
Yes, I do like cartoons. With this book you can become a very good "money person".
It is bound to bring many laughs, today, tomorrow and in much of the future!

Excellent Watercolour Tuition by 4 Artists.......2005-03-14
I especially like the way that these four experts have combined to produce a book that covers every aspect of watercolour painting. It is also interesting to note that each one deals with different lessons rather than they all try to teach the same thing in there own style, that way, the sections follow on from one to the other as you move on to the next artist's lessons. I am an ardent follower of the first three artists, having several books and videos produced by them, so know their methods very well and I have found this book to be one of the best watercolour instruction books that I have seen so far.
I heartily recommend it to anyone who may be struggling a little with their watercolour painting, as I am, or in fact, to anyone interested in this medium.
Enjoy your painting.
Book Description
Etienne-Jules Marey was an inventor whose methods of recording movement revolutionized our way of visualizing time and motion. Best remembered for his chronophotography, Marey constructed a single-camera system that led the way to cinematography. Picturing Time, the first complete survey of Marey's work, investigates the far reaching effects of Marey's inventions on stream-of-consciousness literature, psychoanalysis, Bergsonian philosophy, and the art of cubists and futurists.
Braun offers a fascinating look at how Marey's chronophotography was used to express the profound transformation in understanding and experiencing time that occurred in the late nineteenth century. Featuring 335 illustrations, Picturing Time includes many unpublished examples of Marey's chronophotographs and cinematic work. It also contains a complete bibliography of his writings and the first catalog of his films, photographic prints, and recently discovered negatives.

Book Description
To the trained eye, a single cut flower can be more revealing than witnessing a sword duel to the death. When Musashi is given a flower cut by master swordsman Yagyu Sekishusai, he realizes he must seek this man out. Musashi has the feeling that Sekishusai may turn out to be the greatest swordsman of them all.
Customer Reviews:
A manga for a legend.......2007-01-04
Takehiko Inoue continues on the same high level with this episode of the life of Musashi. Althoug it tends to be a little to long to tell the life of one of his main contenders(7 volumes). For as much interesting as Sasaki Kojiro's life could be, this is a story about Musashi. That's why I'm not giving a five star rating.
Even better than the First.......2006-09-23
Vagabond is about the journey of Takezo, a young man, future master swordsman, who is in search of purpose and meaning to his life. In the first book he thinks its to become the best swordsman by challenging and defeating the best in the world. Having experienced disillusionment about people, he meets a monk (You'll love this guy) who strives to teach Takezo the value of a person, beginning with the youth. Book 2 gives us more of Takezo's background as he desends into a bestial killing machine. Can the monk help Takezo save himself? No alone.
If you like Manga that does not romanticizes war or swordsman, Vagabond should peak your interest. The storytelling is excellent in the drawings, more so than the text. I would rank such adept skill in the same arena as Lone Wolf and Cub. LWC is the standard for balancing poetic story telling and showing the hardcore grit of life as a swordsman. The Vagabond sereis starts with a youth, a teen, not a man with a child. So Takezo maturity is not yet there. What drives him to succeed and overcome his past makes this series promising. The characters show a range of emotions in this manga, and the situations they deal with does an excellent job of targeting a mature audience. Takezo struggle for "his" truth becomes ours to learn from his journey about becoming complete.
Read each book like a wine, one delicious sip at a time, enjoy the flavors.
A manga reader.......2003-03-21
Vagabond is one of the few stories I have read that make me sweat with anticipation before flipping to the next page. The action becomes so intense you will feel bad you're flipping through the pages and missing the superb artwork in you're haste to discover the outcome of the last few pages. Overall the action is some of the best I have seen in the manga format.
A powerful story of one man's quest to become "invincible under the sun", Miyamoto Musashi drifts through the world questioning his one principle: his strength. A raging beast in battle, Musashi, only knows what it is to fight but gradually learns of the world beyond strength, blood and death throughout the course of his duels. Some fights take up entire volumes but they are well worth it.
The one negative aspect of Vagabond would have to be that not all the volumes are translated yet, and the reader might have to wait for the next volume to come out. Maybe the age-old story of "the quest" might seem cliché to some readers but if you can stomach it, Vagabond does its take on Musashi's journey in swordsmanship incredibly well.
I am not a Samurai buff, or even a big action fan but Vagabond's has me sold. I have read most (no lie) of the English translated manga you can find in America and easily place Vagabond right up there with Nausicaa, Maison Ikkou, GTO, Akira and Ghost in the Shell. I believe that all types of comic readers can appreciate Vagabond although shojo manga (girls comics) readers might be a little put off by all the blood and death.
A must have.
Follows the book! OUTSTANDING!!!.......2002-08-14
I just found out about these titles, bought and read them before I could throw out the box they came in. Being a martial artist and student of Iaido (Japanese sword drawing), I am very Familiar with the Musashi story. Yet these books (vol I & II ) are told from a fresh perspective that keeps you tuned in. I can't wait for the rest of the series to follow.
The artwork alone makes these books worth buying.
Also worth a look are the Lone Wolf and Cub Series...

Book Description
A visual approach to explaining and exploring the power of ActionScript for those who design with it. Organized according to differing creative areas, each basic type of project is deconstructed, with components broken down and ActionScript code explained; variations are then suggested. Four-color, with lots of visuals and annotated code.

Do Not Purchase if you want to follow with resource files. DOES NOT EXIST!.......2006-09-28
Be warned. If you are intending to download the resource files and follow along with the excercises....or want to look at finished projects with finished code.... The web site and resources that the book refers to NO LONGER EXISTS. I emailed both the publisher New Riders, and the author Brendan Dawes and have still not heard from them after two weeks. May have some useful information for you but if you want to follow along as the book suggests.... BE WARNED. I would be extra careful with any titles by New Riders or Brendan Dawes. Do research about the resources BEFORE you purchase.
not for newbies.......2005-10-23
I was very disappoointed when I bought this book. I was learning flash and I wanted to get a good basic understanding of actionscript. When I started reading the book, I knew this wasn't it. There were errors and as I quickly discovered, this is definitely not a book for beginners. There are better books out there. Save your money!
missed the mark.......2004-02-05
This book claims to take the fear out of programming but it jumps right into writing raw code in "Advanced" mode as opposed to coding in "Normal" mode which I would assume to be the logical first step.
The author does a good job of introducing the ActionScript language by using metaphors but failed to get me to actually program anything.
This book is not for designers, maybe it is for programmers but, I would guess that programmers would require more depth than this book provides.
Great for learning common ActionScript tasks.......2003-05-10
This book is great for learning how some of the great Flash tricks are done. I'm not a designer or Flash programmer by trade, but after perusing this book I was able to employ my knowledge of similar ECMA languages to ActionScript and create sliding and fading effects as well as a few others.
Highly recommended for someone trying to expand their ActionScript toolset.

Has Its Ups and Downs.......2003-03-09
As others have stated, this book has errors, and what's worse those errors are not even pointed out on the book's website. The least the author/publisher could do is keep the website up-to-date.
The good part is this book does contain some interesting effects with ActionScript, but this is not a book for ActionScript beginners. It is for people with either some background in ActionScript already, or with JavaScript. Otherwise, you will be frustrated very quickly. The quality of the physical publication is quite high with excellent paper stock, full color throughout and long book width. New Riders, to their credit, rarely produces cheap physical products.
In all, this book has some good meaty content, but poor technical editing to catch the errors mars its overall usefulness; hence the mixed review.

The road movie: a complex cinematic journey that incorporates mythic themes of questing and searching, the need for being, for love, for a home and for a promise of a different future, and yet also serves as a map of current cultural desires, dreams, and fears.
Lost Highways explores the history of the road movie through a series of detailed essays on key films within the genre. Through these comprehensive and absorbing studies a clear and concise post-modern picture of the road movie emerges, tracing hitherto neglected intersections with other genres such as the western, film noir, horror and even science fiction.
From "The Wizard of Oz" to "Crash", "Apocalypse Now" to "Vanishing Point", "The Wild Bunch" to "Easy Rider", Lost Highways is the definitive illustrated guide to a diverse body of film which holds at its nucleus the quintessential cinematic/ cultural interchange of modern times.

Book Description
From the earliest days of American cinema, the road movie has been synonymous with American culture. But the road movie is not uniquely American, and other national cinemas have offered their own take, adapting it to reflect their own sensibilities and geographies. Whatever its nationality, the road movie has presented a means by which to challenge and confront convention, remaining an ever-changing, fascinating metaphor for life. Beginning with an expansive essay tracing their historical development, 100 Road Movies is an entertaining but comprehensive guide to one of the most enduring and popular movie sub-genres. Film entries include The Grapes of Wrath, Easy Rider, Two-Lane Blacktop, Stranger Than Paradise, and The Motorcycle Diaries.

Book Description
Reminiscent of Kerouac and Bukowski, this collection of poetry by Lee Ranaldo, guitarist of seminal punk band Sonic Youth, mirrors the dark, emotive beauty of the band's wall-of-noise style. The poems were inspired by time spent on the road and are infused with the strange clarity of travel; they have the same surreal, cinematic quality of landscapes viewed through the windows of a rapidly moving vehicle. Grainy photographs of roadside scenes contribute to the overall mood of restless freedom. This tenth anniversary edition contains 50 percent new material.
Customer Reviews:
how different from the sea is the boat.......2000-06-01
This book is small but its contents are Big. On records like Evol & Daydream Nation, Lee would spew forth words "@ breakneck speed, every bolt rumbling", things from real life & beyond whilst the band cranked it up perfectly. On paper it seems different but it helps to read it out aloud yrself. Of course a large part of this has been recorded for a record called Dirty Windows that came out last year, but still it is good to have in this form. In the Kingdom #19 is longer than the song itself was, & you find out what it is about, how THE CAR & DRIVER take over everything in certain moments of raw power & the landscape of rural or urban America. A lustful side of his personality is revealed in New Condo, Me & Jill [appeared on Ciccone Youth: the Whitey Album many years ago] & Angels. Some of the poems are contemplative, others are violent & passionate. Sonic Youth fans [i.e. anyone w/ 1/2 a brain] should enjoy this on some level, maybe fans of modern poetry will too. LEE IS FREE!
Ranaldo is a better musician than poet........1999-05-05
I bought Road Movies at a spoken word performance by Lee Ranaldo and Jim Carrol at the Landsdowne Street Playhouse in Boston, MA. In performance, Ranaldo's Road Movies comes alive. The Sonic Youth guitarist played to a pre-recorded tape of guitar affects, while playing live guitar and reciting his poems. Leah Singer, Ronaldo's wife, was on hand to project her dusty-rural road scenes as a backdrop and accompanyment. The performance was truly animated and exciting. But on paper Ranaldo's words and Singer's photographs come across rather blandly. I don't regret the purchase and I do refer to the book from time to time, but for someone who is not a Sonic Youth fan (or a fan of Ranaldo's solo works, for that matter), I'm afraid I wouldn't recomend Road Movies. Many of the poems featured in Road Movies can also be found in alternate versions on Ranaldo's various recordings with jazz drummer William Hooker.

Customer Reviews:
not too bad........2007-02-09
had good tips, but seems a little old fashioned. (Published in 1996). Still useful, but don't look at the styles or you will be a bit behind the times...at least untill the styles come back into popularity.
Lack of Picyures.......2006-07-06
I did not really like this book because it did not have many pictures to demonstrate what was being explained.
Other then that, it had a lot of good ideas about sorting clothes, making a list of cloths that work well with other clothes on the list.
Get Some Self-Esteem Back!.......2006-02-24
I love this book! It is well organized and practical, making it easy to refer back to just the info you need. There are lots of visual helps, including photos of lovely plus size models of a variety of ages and skin tones. The book guides you to establish your own personal style with confidence. Best of all, this book is an upbeat celebration of women as we really are, encouraging us to be proud of our strength and beauty. After reading this book, I felt motivated to put my best foot forward NOW, not someday when I'm thinner. I approach shopping for clothes and accessories with confidence and a clear goal. Thanks, Suzan! I couldn't have done it without you!
Even my not-plus-size friends loved it.......2003-11-13
I've had this book for a few years and would skim through it now and again. I finally picked it up this past fall when I decided to do a wardrobe overhaul. I am SO glad I did.
This book isn't just for and about plus-sizes, it's for every woman who wants to make her clothes work for her, regardless of budget. I have spent over $100 on a sweater that I feel more frumpy in than when I wear my $11 sweater I bought off of Ebay.
It's so good, I loaned it to two friends who are not plus sizes. It took me days of begging just to get it back. One friend even told me she was getting compliments on her commuter train on how "different" she looked. Why? She followed Suzan's advice on how a bra should fit. And I admit, my friend DOES look 100% better with a good fitting bra.
I wish she would come out with a volumne II edition.......2003-10-16
I refer to her book twice a year when I'm about to do my seasonal shopping. She gives great advice on how to look great, how to shop, applying makeup, you name it. Anything that has to do with looking good. Although 90% of what she said is still relevant, I wish she would come out with a new book with more up to date pictures of clothing and maybe some new "tricks" on looking stylish. I highly recommend this book.

Title: The silent scream: Sari Grossman, now 16, is creative, funny and very smart. So smart, in fact, that it's hard to understand why she decided to cut her arms and legs on a daily basis. An inside look at the heartbreaking world of girls whose emotional pain has lead to torture themselves.
