an eye opening book.......2003-01-02
i had the experience of being flooded with light and clarity when i first opened and browsed this book. my enthusiasm is in part because of kemp's extraordinary scholarship and detailed command of paintings and art publications across the entire span of western art. but it's also because the story of artistic imaging over the past six centuries is woven around the european romance with linear perspective, which has become so discredited and disliked by artists that it qualifies as a repressed memory. (like any buried memory, perspective surfaces in the dreamlike digital animations of intergalactic science fiction and first person computer games, which take perspective effects to the ultimate level of technical accuracy and artistic triviality.) kemp unearths those repressed perspective memories and shows how vital they were to the development of art and the connections between art and the wider culture of the times.
it is jaw droppingly fun to see how intensive, sophisticated and singleminded was the artistic interest in optical and perceptual issues of seeing. everyone will find special surprises here, but mine include kemp's spatial analysis of velazquez's "las meninas," and the extraordinary drawings and engravings produced c.1800, which force us to realize that we are already looking at "photo graphs," light drawings created by hand, at a time when film photography was not yet practical. there is a large section on various optical devices utilized in visual arts, including the camera obscura and camera lucida, and an excellent section on the evolving understanding and use of color, from the renaissance to seurat.
poignant for me was the victorian fascination with light as a spiritual quality, which comes through in turner's paintings and ruskin's amazing perspectival studies of "clouds" -- images that verge on op art. the intelligence and strength of these images reveal a road left untraveled in art, which turned toward the perceptually driven styles of impressionism and fauvism instead. as a bonus to the many interesting visual exhibits, the writing is lucid, sensible and alert. an invaluable publication.
At long last a scientific approach to art history........2000-04-06
It's amazing what happens when a scientist studies art history. This is a historical perspective on color theory, camera obscura and perspective. It relates the work of indvidual artists to the advances in science.
The refreshing thing is that Kemp realizes that artists who used perspective were not slaves of science, and an artist such as Turner actually realized that the main item of interest in a scene perceptually appears larger than mathematics would dictate.
My favorite story is how it was considered obvious that there were 5 primary colors because Christ had 5 stigmata, but when Newton proved there were 3 primaries, that was obvious because of the Trinity.
This book is certainly not an easy, but the knowledge gained should forever change the way you look at art.

Product Description
In this remarkable debut, R. L. Hogan provides an expansive, yet readable and down-to-earth explanation of the progress of the human species. Humans evolved very slowly until the development of agriculture about 10,000 years ago. Agriculture created the conditions necessary for the development of civilizations. We have been taught history as a chronicle of the many varied civilizations over the previous 5,500 years of recorded events. The physical and biological components of humans have not appreciably changed over that expanse of time. However, something extraordinary occurred during the past couple of centuries that has led to an explosion of technological change and prosperity. To Be Self-Evident explores the reasons and results of this human revolution. The book provides keen insight and a common sense approach which results in a refreshing and optimistic understanding of our history. The evidence points to the unmistakable conclusion that we have entered a new epoch of human existance. We are not living through merely a typical life cycle of just another civilization. Humans have discovered a new and better method of human interaction -- cooperation through Libertas. This new form of human interaction is as fundamental of a change from the past as agriculture was from hunting-gathering. The historical verification of this change does not require the resources of elite scientists and academics. The compelling story is explained throughout this book. The conclusion is self-evident.
Book Description
This book presents an engaging collection of essays exploring "catholic" and "Catholic" perspectives on American law--catholic in their claims of universal truths, and Catholic in their grounding in the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church. What emerges is a model of human freedom and flourishing that has its foundation in the transcendent vocation of each and every human person.
The 2000-year-old Catholic Church played a pivotal role in the formation of the western legal culture. Does it have anything of relevance left to offer that culture in the 21st century? The contributors to Recovering Self-Evident Truths answer with a resounding yes.
The opening essays present the guiding premises of the volume as a whole: human persons must be respected by governments and law because their objective dignity arises from being made in the image and likeness of God. Reasoning from these premises, the next set of essays situates the person within community, exploring the implications for the American legal system of taking seriously Catholic understanding of subsidiarity, solidarity, the common good, and the relationship between freedom and truth. The next set of essays concludes the foundational material by engaging dominant secular political and legal theory from a Catholic perspective.
With the foundation set, the essays in the second half of the book explore eight specific substantive areas of the law--Contract Law, Property Law, Tort Law, Criminal Law, Labor Law, Family Law, Immigration Law, and International Law--through a Catholic lens.
Recovering Self-Evident Truths is particularly timely: a majority of the justices on the United States Supreme Court are Catholic; Catholics represent a pivotal voting demographic in the American political landscape; and the issue of religion and religious values in the public square is hotly debated as some warn against a creeping theocracy. This book demonstrates that religiously founded values can serve to provide constructive proposals for building a more just society.

Book Description
"Get a life," William Shatner told Star Trek fans. Yet, as
Textual Poachers argues, fans already have a "life," a complex subculture which draws its resources from commercial culture while also reworking them to serve alternative interests. Rejecting stereotypes of fans as cultural dupes, social misfits, and mindless consumers, Jenkins represents media fans as active producers and skilled manipulators of program meanings, as nomadic poachers constructing their own culture from borrowed materials, as an alternative social community defined through its cultural preferences and consumption practices.
Written from an insider's perspective and providing vivid examples from fan artifacts,
Textual Poachers offers an ethnographic account of the media fan community, its interpretive strategies, its social institutions and cultural practices, and its troubled relationship to the mass media and consumer capitalism. Drawing on the work of Michel de Ceteau, Jenkins shows how fans of Star Trek, Blake's 7, The Professionals, Beauty and the Beast, Starsky and Hutch, Alien Nation, Twin Peaks, and other popular programs exploit these cultural materials as the basis for their stories, songs, videos, and social interactions.
Addressing both academics and fans, Jenkins builds a powerful case for the richness of fan culture as a popular response to the mass media and as a challenge to the producers' attempts to regulate textual meanings.
Textual Poachers guides readers through difficult questions about popular consumption, genre, gender, sexuality, and interpretation, documenting practices and processes which test and challenge basic assumptions of contemporary media theory.

Outstanding Analysis of the Culture of Television Fandom.......2004-10-12
Culture studies has been one of the most provocative and controversial areas of investigation in the social sciences during the last score years or so. Using the tools of postmodern analysis of texts, and the deconstruction of ideas, institutions, and forms scholars have reshaped our understanding of everything from the mundane to subjects acknowledged by all as critical to our modern society. In this important book Henry Jenkins turns his considerable analytic skills on the role of television fans in adopting and making their own several important series and movies. Jenkins, on the faculty of Massachusetts Institute of Technology, writes both as a scholar and a fan fully immersed in the culture that produces conventions and a wide range of artistic products associated with television.
"Textual Poachers" emphasizes how fans of various television shows and movies have embraced the characters and "universe" of the shows and made them their own. In most cases they participate in the continuing saga of the characters of the story by fashioning their own narratives based on the series. Be far the most famous of these participatory series is "Star Trek," which was the first series to attract this type of fan following, and still the largest of all of them. It has spawned not only multi and varied clubs for those interested in the ideals of the series, but also inspired a range of creative responses in art, literature, costume, engineering, erotica, music, and drama. In so doing, those that are a part of the fan culture of the series emphasize the interplay of the crew "family" aboard the Star Ship Enterprise, the ideals of the United Federation of Planets, and the challenges of moving beyond the humdrum of existence on Earth to a more exciting and rewarding life within the broader cosmos. The ranges of responses are almost as broad as the number of people involved, and Henry Jackson makes clear that all of those responses are legitimate in the "universe" of fandom.
Jenkins writes at length about the responses of fans to several television programs beyond the famous "Star Trek" phenomenon. These include "Alien Nation" (1989-1990), "Dr. Who," (1963- ), "Magnum, P.I." (1980-1988); "The Man from Uncle" (1964-1968), "Remington Steele" (1982-1987), "Simon and Simon" (1981-1988), "Twin Peaks" (1990-1991), and others. But the series fans that Jenkins spends the most time analyzing are those attracted to "Beauty and the Beast" (1987-1990). The romance between Catherine (Linda Hamilton) and Vincent (Ron Perlman) captured the imagination of a larger number of viewers and they used that on-screen relationship as the cultural materials from which they created a vast array of "stories, songs, videos, and social interactions." It proved a powerful inspiration for enormously romantic depictions.
Henry Jenkins also draws attention to the fact that the vast majority of those a part of this fandom, are white, middle-class women seeking something more than they experience in their everyday lives. They seem drawn to television series with compelling characters interacting in a sophisticated manner. They emphasize relationships and tend to soft-pedal action and adventure in their formulations. At sum they seem to be creating through their efforts a place of refuge, acceptance, and intimacy for themselves and their co-participants. This is captured well in a song, "In My Weekend-Only World," written by T.J. Burnside Clapp to express her love of the fan conventions that she attends:
"In an hour of make-believe
In these warm convention halls
My mind is free to think
And feels so deeply
An intimacy never found
Inside their silent walls
In a year or more
Of what they call reality.
In my weekend-only world,
That they call make-believe,
Are those who share
The visions that I see.
In their real-time life
That they tell me is real,
The things they care about
Aren't real to me." (p. 277)
Henry Jenkins' study is a superb analysis that will change the perspective all who read it about the fan culture and its place in modern society. It is difficult not to emerge from reading this book without a sense of wonder about the talented individuals who are a part of this fan culture and how they seek to live their lives on their own terms, in the process creating for themselves idealized "universes" more like those they glimpsed in the television fictions that they embrace.
Still the best account of fan culture and fan use of texts.......2001-07-07
This is a gem of a book. Jenkins combines an "insider's" understanding of media fandom with serious, well-grounded scholarship to provide one of the few scholarly works on this subject which is not riddled with unacknowledged biases or factual errors (you know, the sort of misrepresentations of series content which suggest that the scholar didn't think enough of the subject matter or their fan informants to bother to get it right). As someone who was practically raised by classic "Star Trek" re-runs and who continues to find inspiration and healing in many science fiction TV programs -- and who hopes to continue to do scholarly research in this field -- I would hold Jenkins up as a model to other scholars. The major drawback of this volume is that it is now almost ten years old. There have been many wonderful series with growing fan cultures of their own (including the rise of such female heroes as "Xena" and "Buffy") since TEXTUAL POACHERS was written, but Jenkins provides a methodology and a model which can still help to interpret these more recent phenomena. Read this, and enjoy.
Dining at the Television Buffet.......1999-12-05
Jenkins starts by dispelling the stereotype of the media fan as teenaged geek in Spock ears, and explores the very real and dynamic interactions between fans and their media. He has a clear understanding of the subject and a good relationship with the people whose culture he describes, as well as a readable and intelligent style of writing. The book is not only interesting but also fun to read.
Excellent resource for fan fiction authors and fans.......1999-10-28
While dated, and slightly insular, this text is an excellent introduction to the sub-culture of fanzines and fan fiction. While many of the current generation of fans seem to believe fan fiction was born online around 1994, they should be surprised and hopefully pleased to discover the rich (off-line) history of the phenomenon, dating all the way back to the pulp magazines of the 1930s.

Complete Piano Player Omnibus Edition .......2007-02-21
A first class product delivered very quickly considering the item came from the USA to the UK. I would recommend this product to anyone learning to play the piano and it represents very good value over purchasing each edition seperately.
Complete Piano Player Omnibus Edition.......2007-01-16
Great book for the beginning piano player. Provides instruction from proper posture to piano exercises. I'm still working through it and don't find it boring. Written to keep student interested.
well thought out lessons to help gradually gain piano skills.......2006-10-30
I began learning the piano at the age of 5 and stopped at 10 to give time to the clarinet. Since then I have lost my coordination between my left and right hand. This book recomposes a lot of familiar, old classics (ob di la was my favorite and brought back so much memories!) in varying skill progressions so that each new lesson is a build up of a previous lesson. In just a month, I am already in book 4 and loving how the book guides one through a bit at a time. I have observed improvement in the coordination of my 2 hands and relearning how to be more familiar in reading the keys in treble clef again. I have been going through this book so fast because I can recognize each song and thus find enjoyable to play -- I have to say, I have a bit of a knack for sight reading though.
Some of the pieces I thought were strangely composed though; but perhaps it is just my lack of appreciation of the esoteric beauty of la musique.
LloydInSocal.......2006-09-16
The Book I bought is only one fifth of the "series" or complete Book that has been reviewed by some. I got ONLY Book 1 (of 5 or more) that I would retitle: "How to play songs with one finger on each hand". And that covers all 48 pages of the Book. It's fine for "starters", I suppose, but it looks to me like it defintely demands the other 4 "Books" to be worth it -- and I did not see those offered.
Certainly not for beginners.......2005-08-11
Having read another book "Listen, Look and Play" by the same author years back, and having read the praises and 5-star ratings for this book, I thought this would be good place to start.
Maybe I've not given enough time to the book yet, but from what I have read and tried so far, it looks like it's just a collection of sheet music with some legends and notes thrown in between explaining what the different terms, symbols and notation mean.
At the very least, I'd like to know the correct finger placement. I had though this book give me the formal introduction to piano but it seems like I'm better off on my own, playing by the ear.
I don't think this is a suitable beginner's book. I'd rather read something which starts me with basic explanation and some simple examples to practice rather than jumping to full-fledged songs/rhymes on the first go. And this is after I had taken a two-week course which taught me some basics on how to read music on the staff - if you are an absolute beginner, just forget it!
Another thing I didn't like about this book is that it is too thick and hence almost impossible to place it in the sheet music holder on my keyboard. I'd rather have the five "books" as actually five separately bound booklets, so that I can conveniently turn pages - at least that's how it was with another book I had.
Book Description
A unique program for learning the fundamentals of music theory. Easy-to-follow text with clear examples. Plus self-test work.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent book for the ADVANCED player........2007-04-07
Do not believe the negative reviews that have been written about this book. They are written by the very people for whom this type of book is useless, namely rank beginners who are nowhere near ready for an advanced text such as this one.
I'll keep this review short, this is an excellent book for somewhat more experienced players; for a beginning player the book is a waste of time. Some of the problems are extremely difficult and are designed to test the knowledge of players who are already proven winners in limit hold 'em and are looking to advance to higher limit games against higher caliber opponents.
If you are already a good hold 'em player and are looking to find out just HOW good you are, read this book and test yourself. It is very educational and will certainly get you thinking about the game on a higher level. If you are a beginner, don't bother. Without trying to come across as condescending, I would guess that this book will be way over your head.
There is nothing worse than people writing negative reviews about something that is way over their heads and that they are incapable of understanding yet that is exactly what has happened when people say ridiculous things like they use this book for toilet paper. Go out and buy "Getting started in hold 'em" and work on that before you start reviewing advanced books that are way out of your league.
good stuff.......2007-03-04
not the first book i pick up when i'm looking to study a little poker cause the book takes EFFORT, but i like it. defintely a different approach to learning poker. the fluff factor is low. you have to be on the ball to squeeze value out of the book. nice job.
Not Pretty but Very Educational. .......2006-11-13
The first question I ask when evaluating any poker book is, "Did it strengthen my game?", and with this one the easy answer is yes. Byron Jacobs may not principally be a poker player, but like so many other chess greats, he possessed excellent analytical and processing skills which enabled him to excel at poker before he first sat down upon the virtual felt. The style you'll learn from him can best be described as logical/aggressive. I say this because for limit, he's far from super tight. It's actually a great text for nits because it gets you to take better advantage of the opportunities presented. I think the real theme throughout these 24 hands is obtaining the MAXIMUM EXTRACTION of chips from your opponents. Jacobs, unlike many of us, fully realizes that the only way to really make good money from limit is to make the most out of every opportunity which comes your way. Limit's all about small edges and when they're not pushed players end up losing to the rake. Concerning the criticisms about the book's structure and organization, I do agree that they could have been improved upon. Perhaps putting the answers right after the questions would have helped as I too didn't like constantly flipping back and forth as I read; however, the whole "learn by doing" thing really did help me. I liked answering the questions because it made the lessons clearer. Yeah, it should have been longer, but considering the pile of lengthy stuff out there which isn't useful, this one was definitely a cut above.
DONT WAIST YOUR MONEY ON THIS BOOK.......2006-11-05
I HAVE OVER 15 POKER BOOKS, SOME OF THEM ARE BETTER THAN OTHERS.
But this books suckkkkkkssss..
This is the only poker book I will used when I run out of toilet paper, but just dont take my word for it. just use your hard earn money on this book and let me know if reading about 20+ hand is worth the price.
Dang I dont know how Jim brier got sucked in to this wanna be book. Mr. Brier has put out Good literature on poker.... Sorry Jim..!!!!
great content, poorly put together book.......2006-01-10
This is an excellent book in many ways, but the structure is not well thought out. It takes you through 24 hands and introduces multiple hypothetical situations in each one, which really takes you out of the flow of the hand. It's in a quiz format, and the point is to get a feel for how the hand went and how you would play. This is very awkward when the author continually diverts you. I found myself spending more time thinking about what happened in each example than thinking about how I would play.
I'm giving it 4 stars because Jacobs knows what he's talking about and has a good handle on how to play in modern middle-limit online games. It's just a shame he couldn't make the book more readable.
In the very first question of the first hand the author sidetracks you and asks, "Hypothetically, how would you play if it had been 3-bet before the flop?" In the real hand you flop top pair and bet the whole way. We get pulled into two more hypothetical situations that involve you getting raised on the turn. When the author gets back to the actual hand and asks how you would play the river, the correct answer is to bet, but you've still got all these hypothetical situations swirling around in your head so you have to think for awhile to come to the conclusion that there was very little aggression and your hand is probably good.
The ideas in the book are top-rate, but the bottom line is that 24 hands is obviously not enough for the author to illustrate everything he wants to, and adding several hypothetical situations to each hand is not a good solution. These should all be separate hands entirely. Ciaffone's Middle Limit book has over 400 example hands and is much more readable.
Customer Reviews:
questionable and frustrating.......2006-06-03
In the introduction, it is stated: "no-limit cash games are seen relatively rarely these days". Really? Why are so many of the book's examples from actual no limit games?
The format is making decisions step by step playing 58 hands. Then you compare your choices against the answers.
The first example hand is played without looking at your pocket cards. In the answer it is stated that you must make sure no one knows you are raising blind. Can you use this advice?
Most of the answers are not explained sufficiently. Usually, when I got a "wrong" answer, the book answer did not help me understand.
If you are learning, advoid this book; it will frustrate you.
Instructional and entertaining.......2005-12-16
The main thing this book has going for it is its format. Reuben describes a hand and a situation and then quizzes you on each part of playing that hand. He tells you what he or the player he is following, did. Then, at the end, he tells you what mathematically correct strategy would be. Reuben does not always max out the score with his own actions and when he errs, it tends to be toward the more aggressive play.
The correct answer has nothing to do with whether or not you win the hand.
Reuben's writing is humorous and entertaining. Comments such as "A perfect score. You are not welcome at our table." He does use "gay" as an adjective far too often and that is irritating, but I can live with it. Most Americans think most Brits are gay, anyway, except for tough guys like Sean Connery and Margaret Thatcher. It is a sophmoric term for an adult of a reasonable age. I have never met a raise that wanted a civil union.
The drawbacks of this technique occur when the correct strategy is to fold, yet the quiz goes on. If I folded before the flop, I don't have much of a decision on the river.
Still, the few nit picking things aside, a truly enjoyable book. And the Royal Vegas cds on the back inside cover make nice frisbees.
Rock Solid Instruction. .......2005-08-14
Even before I started writing reviews for Amazon, I was always a customer who made use of the review section. This was particularly true in regards to poker books because I assumed that the raters had the same goal, getting better, that I did. For this book, I read the insights of the two reviewers below, and made the call. My interest in studying Pot-Limit stems from playing the $10.00 table at a popular website. I wondered if there were some tips I could absorb which would give me an advantage over the other No Limit players at the PL table.
I have to say that I was taken aback when I first opened "How Good Is..." because it looked kind of like a workbook with check in boxes and little quizzes for each hand. Then I saw that the free CD actually was the download disk for Royal Vegas poker, which, in my mind, is an awful site. So, with some trepidation, I began to read this one, and must admit to being pleasantly surprised by the advice it contained. American readers should not be put off by the fact that some of the pot values are represented in English pounds because, you'll soon realize, that the exact amounts have little to do with the functionality of the instruction.
Stewart Reuben is a retired professional, and he definitely knows what he is talking about. He has a engaging personality and is an enjoyable narrator. Inside, he offers up 58 hands for analysis. Over the course of them, many mentions are made of his old poker pals and famous players like Jack Keller or Devilfish Ulliot. Personally, I did not take the quizzes as I went along but I read a couple of the hands twice after recognizing the way in which I mishandled similar scenarios at the table. Lastly, there's a chart on page 9 that shows hand rankings which was so good I forever marred my copy by tearing it out and placing it alongside my computer monitor as a guide.
Advanced concepts and strategies for various hands.......2004-06-08
How Good Is Your Pot-Limit Hold'em? is a handy and straightforward guide to Pot-limit hold'em, a poker variant characterized by big bets that can spring out of nowhere, as well as opportunities for bold bluffs and counter-bluffs, which has become wildly popular from coast to coast in recent decades. Written by an experienced pot-limit player, How Good Is Your Pot-Limit Hold'em? offers not only basic introductory and "how-to" play instructions, but also advanced concepts and strategies for various hands, and some complex math to better gauge one's odds during play. An accompanying CD-ROM rounds out this excellent primer for those interested in learning more about this exciting style of gambling.
Excellent Book!.......2004-06-05
This is the best hand examples book I've read on big bet holdem. It's leaps and bounds better than, "Championship Tournament Practice Hands" by McEvoy and Cloutier. Unlike most others, this book puts you in all kinds of difficult situations and really forces you to think hard about the correct move. This book also plays all the way through each hand, and it often throws solid curve balls at you on the turn and river. The answers and comments are very good. This book rocks!
