Customer Reviews:
Not For the Detail Oriented!.......2001-06-17
Touring In Wine Country: Tuscany provides a richly illustrated overview for anyone considering a tour of the towns and vineyards of Tuscany. It is disappointing, however, in its lack of detail. It would be easier to navigate your way by following the author's narrative than by attempting to read the maps, which are almost completely useless. There are recommendations for shopping and restaurants, but this information also is quite condensed, written in small pale type, and rather vague as to price range.
A far more useful book is A Traveller's Wine Guide To Italy, by Stephen Hobley.
Helpful guide for Tuscan food & wine touring.......2000-08-21
This is a very helpful book. We have similar guides in the series for Burgundy, Alsace and Rhone. I highly recommend them. Our experience in Italy is that wine tourism per se is much less formal than France, Germany and US. That means the traveller must be a lot more curious and self sufficient. Bring along a fullscale Michelin road atlas and be prepared to ask a lot of questions. Try to learn an little Italian. It goes a long way. People were uniformly friendly and went way out of their way to draw local maps, add add'l restaurants to your list and even call wine makers for tours (on your behalf). Wine makers (such as Tenuta dell'Ornellaia) who otherwise don't open their doors to the public. Buy the book if you plan to tour wine regions in Tuscany!
Wishing it had more information.......2000-07-19
Just returned from Tuscany and used the book extensively. Here's what I found. THE GOOD POINTS: The hotel and restaurant recommendations were excellent (although one particular hotel in which I stayed based on the book, which was called a "Haven" was just ok). Each city and chapter was broken down nicely with fine points and attractions that I used extensively. THE BAD POINTS: Although there were many, many wineries, and their phone numbers, and maps detailing the countryside in which they were located, the SPECIFICS were horrible. Never on any of the highlighted routes on the maps does it POINT OUT where these wineries are actually LOCATED, and on several occasions I was lost beyond belief trying to find them (even though I had made appointments). That made for a very frustrating wine tour, and considering this is a wine tour book, it needed to be more specific.
overall a good resource but is lacking some important info.......2000-06-01
Over all I enjoyed this book but did have a few problems that I feel that people should be made aware of before deciding if they wish to purchase this book. The description of the wine roads does not include all of the wineries that she suggests visiting and includes some that are not in her book. The maps are utterly useless, with a black dot indicating that there is either a restaurant, winery or shop in that spot but doesn't indicate what it is. Many of these places indeed have fax numbers which I found on my own searches that she doesn't list. A better description of where each place is located and how to get there from a major landmark would be very helpful. Also some of the listings have letters such as E,F,G after the winery (one said "B" available in 2000) but I can not find anywhere in the book what these mean. I really did enjoy this book, the details of each winery is helpful as well as the restaurants but feel that you will need a companion book to go along with it.
winetraveler in Toscany can't do without............1999-10-12
We found the book in our rented hous in Toscany. We were located in the middle of the Chianti Classico area. We follewed one of the trips in the book and we saw one of the best castellos in the Chianti: Castello di Brolio. Absolutely fantastic.

Book Description
This extensively illustrated book explores materials--many of them three-dimensional objects that virtually jump off of the page--used in art teaching from 1770 to 1950. In the course of gathering her collection, Diana Korzenik traced the methods and materials used to teach artists and amateurs to draw and to see the world around them. The illustrations provide an extensive sampling of these objects, depicting drawing books, crayons, promotional booklets, and three-dimensional teaching aids. Stochastic screening, used in the color printing of the book, gives striking resolution and fidelity to the illustrations. The essays provide evidence of the changing interpretations of art making in the period covered by the collection and offer new perspectives on material culture, art and design, education, and American Studies.
Customer Reviews:
Very impressive erotic photography........2006-12-12
The choice of nude male models is one of the best I've seen. They're all strikingly handsome and sexy, and the landscape accentuates their mannish beauty. Also, the props that are used create a special sort of aura to the content of each photo. I am very impressed by the work of these photographers.
black # 1.......2006-03-02
only thing i need to ask IS where have you people been for the 72years of my life...keep up the good work. very good.
African Male Nude in Art & Photography a little over the top.......2006-02-27
While the book has very beautiful photo quality of black men, at the same time I feel there are some photos that are rather questionable or should not have been included in this book..two men kissing was somewhat of a turn-off that took away from the beauty of it. What was the photographer saying, embrace is one thing mouth2mouth kiss another...Overall it was beautiful
Excellent collection. Underpriced........2005-03-21
Janssen easily lives up to his excellent reputation with this book that highlights 4 photographers of the African male nude. The approximately 75 pages of photos are a mixture of color and black and white. Very artsy, mostly, but not shy. I especially like the dozen shots of couples--photographed with as much natural grace, innocence and warmth of color as the friendship and love that is obvious between the subjects as they relax by the sea, walk arm in arm or share a kiss. Love and friendship never seemed more wholesome. All of this for only 20 bucks would be a steal... With the big Amazon discount, you might feel guilty for getting so much for so little. [Later note: seems there was a price increase since I bought one of the first copies and wrote this review, but it is still worth it. I do not have such high praise, however, for Vol. 2 in this series.]
Customer Reviews:
Great idea, horrible pictures.......2007-04-25
Was looking forward to picking up all the books in this series. After picking up this one and the one on Dave Martin, I changed my mind. The main problem is the very poor reproduction of these photos. They look like they were all xeroxed then photographed for this book. The color photos are just horrible. Owning a considerable amount of real vintage
photography, I just can't understand why they released a book by these photographers using such poor quality reproductions. I don't believe they even used actual photographs. I have printed better reproductions myself of jpegs off the internet. The only nice thing I have to say about this series is that the books themselves are well made. There are many better books out there about this subject.
nice photos but few words.......1999-08-15
work of Bruce is well shown but we can regret a so short text about the photograph. The book is not pleasant to read (nothing to read) but is really pleasant to watch (nice pics).
A Missed Opportunity.......1999-05-11
Considering the breadth and scope of his work, its innovative nature and ability to tweak censorship laws before the 1960s, this book doesn't do justice to Bruce of LA. So little has been written on him, and it's disappointing that this book fails to deliver the most basic information. Biographical material here is limited to a single page while none of the photos are assigned even approximate dates, let alone locations and models' names (one can learn more by checking out on-line auctions of Bruce's work). It's too bad the editor of this series didn't see fit to offer more than a mere random selection of Bruce's images--nowhere near his best--without placing them in any cultural context whatsoever. As a new generation learns about the ones preceeding it, such information is crucial. Bruce of LA is an icon of 1940s, 50s and 60s. Too bad this book fails to address, let alone try to answer, the question why.

Naked New York
ASIN: 0393318745 |
Book Description
In this unique and startling collection of portraits following Naked New York, we see the "beautiful people" of Los Angeles first clothed, then completely naked. The people of Los Angeles are men and women of all shapes, ages, colors, and professions living in a city famed for its Hollywood glamour and perpetual summer. Photographed outdoors we see a magician, screenwriter, trapeze artist, unemployed surfer, filmmaker, casting director, aerospace engineer, and many more. This serious and, at the same time, amusing group of portraits shows the surprising differences and not so surprising similarities we have to one another clothed and unclothed. Unlike traditional nude photography, these portraits don't have erotic or sexual overtones; they are simply real people who reveal both their clothed public selves and their naked private selves. Greg Friedler's work as a documentary photographer is a kind of anthropological survey of people. If clothing is a voluntary choice, unclothed we see people in an involuntary state-we see their bodies as we see their faces, unmasked. These images are at once deeply intimate and refreshingly matter of fact.
Customer Reviews:
NAKED IS NATURAL.......2003-01-09
Besides what may be its voyeur value for some, "NAKED LOS ANGELES" also shows what it is to be real and unvarnished. The naked self that many of us see in the morning before we dress for the day, though many of us are at times loathe to embrace and accept it. Friedler, through this book, shows us people who are brave and honest enough to throw off pretense and bare themselves unabashedly. Well done! Take heart when reading this book and be proud of your naked self, too.
Very interesting.......2002-04-13
A lot of people would think this is quite a boring book, but I found it fascinating to see how much clothing changes someone's appearance. It just reinforces the idea that we're all naked under our clothes.
Novel Idea.......2002-01-18
Grab this book while you can. The NAKED LONDON book is out of print already.
Great look into human beings.......1998-11-06
Both Naked NY and Naked LA are wonderful human studies and are highly recommended. The contrast between the New Yorkers and Anglinos is facinating.
What does the girl next door look like with her clothes off?.......1998-10-27
This book taps into the deepest part of human curiosity, namely what does everybody around you look like with their clothes off. It's like ordering the x-ray glasses from the back of the comic book and having them really work! When I got this book I sat for hours with a couple of friends fighting over which page to look at, making comments on this photo or that one, engaged in discussions of whether tattooed people where more likely to want to take their clothes off, etc. It is a very honest and straightforward look at people's most intimate side and very well shot. Definitely worth buying.
Book Description
In 1953 the writer and curator Nancy Newhall assembled, with the cooperation of the photographer Edward Weston, a mock-up for an elegant book featuring Weston's photographs of the nude. It was the only book on this subject that Weston himself participated in creating. The sample book
intersperses landscapes and still lifes with nude studies and includes an essay written by Newhall on the artist's aesthetic. The proposal was rejected in the 1950s, however, by publishers of fine art photographs, who were reluctant to address the subject. In 1985 the mock-up was acquired by the J.
Paul Getty Museum with some pages and prints missing, yet it was only in 2006 that curator Brett Abbott recognized the key to reconstructing the unpublished book in its entirety. Now, in association with the Center for Creative Photography in Tucson, Arizona, the Getty has finally been able to
realize Newhall and Weston's vision. The present volume has been produced with distinctions of paper and ink to indicate those elements that have been added-including a preface by the curator and thumbnail reproductions of the mock-up as it now exists-and those elements that were part of the
original, including Newhall's essay and all thirty-nine photographs, arranged on the pages as Newhall and Weston had placed them.

Anthology of several dozen artists of varying skill & talent.......1998-08-24
An anthology of works by several dozen photographers from the Los Angeles area. The book presents a mix of color and B&W images of male & female models, some nude and, oddly, some not. There is a wide variety of styles including fine art, erotica, glamour and photojournalism; and images vary from breathtakingly exquisite to trite and amateurish. Overall a very mixed bag.

Customer Reviews:
Compliments the Classic!.......2006-12-01
My wife talked me into this one. Love "Peanuts" and certainly "The Great Pumpkin", just not into reading books about them. Well, I take that back, I enjoyed "Good Grief", the biography on Charles Schulz, as well as a treasury of his works. Anyway, finally sat down to read this one over the holidays, and I was glad she talked me into it. They broke the mould with Schulz, and this was a nice trip down memory lane.
As good as the Christmas one.......2006-09-30
If you own the Christmas edition one then the Great Pumpkin one is in the same format. It has interesting facts, two piano score pages, and the colored story of it. It is worth your money and is good for any Peanuts fans collection.

Silent screen goddess Clara Bow was the embodiment of the Roaring Twenties, Hollywood's first sex symbol and a natural talent with an independent heart.
Customer Reviews:
More than Just a Silent Star.......2007-08-27
David Stenn's biographical account of Clara Bow is a history of a woman victimized by family, friends, and the movie industry. Clara Bow was given the title of "It" girl by Elinor Glyn and it became her signiture. Born in 1905, Clara Bow suffered abuse and neglect at the hands of both her mother and father.
She achieved stardom at a very young age when she won the Fame and Fortune contest. Her prize was a part in the movie "Beyond The Rainbow", but she was later edited out of the final cut. Nevertheless, Clara's talent was spotted because she had something different. She was a natural born actress with a freshness that brought life to the scenes she appeared in.
Uneducated and naive, Clara was a money making vehicle for Paramount to exploit and use. She was an untreated schizophrenic for most of her life and suffered from insomnia. Clara's career began to decline when Daisy De Voe, hair stylist turned Bow's financial manager testified in a criminal trial about Clara's drinking, gambling, and promiscuous lifestyle. Most of which would not raise eyebrow these days, but was scandalous in the mid 1900s.
Clara died in 1965 with a modest fortune. She was survived by 2 sons from her marriage to George Beldam. This book attempts to present an honest account of a woman vilified by the press. I couldn't shake off the impression that David Stenn was more of a fan than a biographer. I like Stenn's writing style. It is clean and often moving. The author certainly did his research.
In essence, the story of Bow's life is quite complicated. Stenn tells us of Bow's illness only at the end of the book. He also reveals the dark secrets from her youth. I think it detracted from the story and gave the reader a filtered view of Clara. Had he told the reader early in the book, so much of Bow's self destructive behavior would have been explained.
Unbelivable Woman.......2007-07-04
Clara Bow was an amazing actress and woman. She overcame poverty and abuse to become of the great sirens of the 20's. She was very beautiful, and though she did have her faults, she left her mark on movie history. I've watched her silent movies since I've read this book, and "It" is my favorite. This biography is well done and I'll read it again.
One of the best books on Clara Bow.......2007-05-22
This book is probably one of the best books written on the subject of CLARA BOW (**). I just finished reading this book and loved it.
The author goes in great detail regarding the life of Clara,-- from the time she was born, to the time of her death.
Clara was such a misunderstood person. I think that the author has attempted to give us all a better understanding of Clara (the "It" girl).
I also loved the photos of Clara in this book.(She sure was a pretty actress!)
(**)= The only thing that I question is how the "professionals" came to the conclusion that Clara was (probably) Schitzophrenic?... In my opinion, rather than schitzophrenic, I think Clara probably suffered from Manic Depression. That is not to say that her mother was not schitzophrenic though.... From the sounds of it, Clara's Mom was probably schitzophrenic, that I agree with the author and "professionals" (eg: the instances when Clara's Mom tried to kill her with a butcher knife, while Clara was sleeping!).
However, from all the descriptions of Clara's tortured life, to me, it sounded like Clara was more Bi-Polar than anything else. But Schitzophrenic (?)---probably not.
Clara, by all accounts, was never a violent person. She did not "hear voices". Clara had intense "ups and downs" (as described by her children and husband). Clara loved sex, and the attention it brought her. She was an insecure person, who was searching for love and approval her whole life.
EXCELLENT BIOGRAPHY.......2007-01-09
CLARA BOW IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE ACTRESSES AND ONE OF THE MOST MALIGNED WOMEN TO EVER GRACE THE SCREEN. THERE IS STILL SO MUCH MYTH AND FLAT LIES THAT ARE ACCEPTED BECAUSE OF TRASH LIKE "HOLLYWOOD BABYLON", MOST OF WHICH IS NONSENSE. WHAT IS FACTUAL IS THAT CLARA BOW MAY HAVE BEEN ONE OF THE 5 GREATEST ACTRESSES WE'VE EVER PRODUCED IN THE UNITED STATES. WHAT IS ALSO TRUE IS SHE WAS HORRIBLY ABUSED BY POVERTY, IGNORANCE, AN INSANE MOTHER WHO TRIED TO MURDER HER, A SEXUALLY ABUSIVE, MENTAL DEFECTIVE OF A FATHER, MOST OF THE MEN IN HER LIFE, PARAMOUNT PICTURES, THE MEDIA AND HISTORY. WHAT IS ABSOLUTELY NOT TRUE, ALTHOUGH THIS BOOK INSISTS IT IS, WAS THAT SHE WAS SCHIZOPHRENIC. KEEP IN MIND, PSYCHIATRY IN THE 1940'S AND 1950'S MISDIAGNOSED SCHIZOPHENIA REGULARLY, ESPECIALLY IN WOMEN. CLARA WAS A BORDERLINE PERSONALITY DISORDER, BI-POLAR AND WITH SEVERE PTSD, BUT MOST ASSUREDLY NOT SCHIZOPHRENIC AND THAT IS A FACT. NONETHELESS, IT IS A HORROR STORY OF THE WORST MAGNITUDE, ALBEIT FASCINATING AND GRIPPING. IT IS SINGULARLY ONE OF THE BEST BIOGRAPHIES I'VE EVER READ OF THE PERIOD AND THE ONLY ONE ABOUT CLARA BOW. BUY IT, YOU WON'T BE SORRY.
Strong interesting biography of movie legend.......2006-06-29
Clara Bow: Runnin' Wild by David Stenn is a fascinating look into the life of a movie icon. I really knew nothing about her until I read the book Flappers which perked my interest. This well-written book thoroughly answered my questions. From her childhood tragedies to her lonely death, Bow's life reads like the kind of dramatic movie she always wanted to star in. Bow was victimized by people her entire life: her mother, her father, boyfriends, Paramount studios, etc. She was so desperate for their approval that she allowed others to use her up. She used sex as a weapon to keep men at bay, and yet somehow managed to maintain an air of innocence about her. Her eventual diagnosis of schizophrenia and decline into solitude are a sad end to the story. Stenn does a good job with his writing, but occasionally blocks out words that don't seem very offensive and at other times uses words that clearly are offensive. Considering this book is about a woman best known for her looks, more pictures should have been used throughout.

Book Description
Don't laugh word searches take some serious concentration. But the puzzles in Wacky Word Searches may make even the most solemn solvers grin. This fun book includes dozens of puzzles based on The Simpsons, Seinfeld, clowns, mimes, and more. Deceptively designed as straightforward word searches, these brain-busters add a comic twist to the content. For example, the Seinfeld puzzle includes a list of phrases from classic episodes "Man Hands," "Bubble Boy" that will have solvers smiling as they seek. Includes 45 word searches.
Customer Reviews:
FUNNY PUZZLES.......2007-01-05
THIS WAS AN EXCELLANT PURCHASE AND MY DAUGHTER HAD VERY MUCH FUN DOING THESE PUZZLES.
Unusual word lists.......2004-10-30
The words search puzzles in this small book are, according to the author, "based on the most hilarious stuff on the planet." The word lists include such offbeat themes as stupid pet names, bad fads, common Internet acronyms, and terms for kissing and vomiting. While these themes are unusual and original, I would not call them hilarious. The edition I own has a whoopee cushion included inside the back cover - to guarantee that the solver approaches the puzzles with a silly mind-set, I suppose.
I only rated this book with three stars out of five because the placement of the words in the grid is not well thought-out. Some of the grids have no, or almost no, words on the diagonal (which to me are the hardest to find), and one of the puzzles has the words clustered in only half the letter grid. Still, they do make for entertaining puzzling.
