Book Description
In 1972 UNESCO created the World Heritage Foundation, a program to identify and protect "world heritage sites" -irreplaceable environments ranging from natural areas to whole urban centers. To date over 600 such sites have been designated for protection on four continents, including places of worship, monuments, living settlements, and historic complexes, which taken together constitute an ideal tour of the history, cultures and creative expressions of humanity.
That tour begins here, in the first of the three-volume UNESCO World Heritage series: 46 living and archeological built environments from continuously-occupied cities such as Crakow and old Havana to archeological treasures such as Macchu Picchu (Peru) and Angkor Wat (Cambodia); Petra (Jordan); the Imperial Forums (Italy); the Casbah of Algiers; Teotihuacan (Mexico)-and discoveries that make a full spectrum of world cultures.
Each site is presented up close with color reproductions and a rich explanatory text. The volume is completed by the charter map of the World Heritage Foundation and includes UNESCO's standards for designation. With this particularly rich selection of images, places distant in time and space can be seen as connected in a singular and fascinating way: the true heritage of every nation and every individual.

Why is it out of print?.......2000-01-28
The first real book - as opposed to pamphlets - about stained glass in Scotland. It's amazing that this book is out of print so soon - you'd think, then, that the publishers might realise it was a popular title. Michael Donnelly's incredibly knowledgeable about stained glass in Scotland, but the book is very readable as well as scholarly. Bit short on 20th century East coast artists; presume this will be rectified in the next issue... It could also do with some large pictures and an extra 100 pages. Publishers please note. A great introduction to Scottish stained glass, though.

Not too shabby.......2006-08-17
In 1986, readers looked on with mild interest as Jim Shooter, editor-in-chief of Marvel Comics, introduced "The New Universe", a 25th anniversary celebration focused around the creation of a new line of superheroes. These weren't Marvel's standard type of spandex-clad extroverts who would save Manhattan 10 times before lunch; instead, this would be heroes and villains of a more subtle nature, based in a reality parallel to the standard MU. Due to shifting creative teams and lack of direction for the various titles, the readers' mild interest turned to confusion, and the New Universe was eventually cancelled - not that anyone really noticed by that point. The concepts were somewhat interesting, but for multiple reasons, the New Universe just didn't take, and it languished for 15 years in Marvel limbo... well, time's up! Thanks to some brief appearances in more recent titles such as Quasar and Exiles, the New Universe is getting another shot, and from what I have seen in the trade paperback UNTOLD TALES OF THE NEW UNIVERSE, they're off to a decent start. For the most part, these stories are well written, and the artwork is good enough to further my appreciation of them. Granted, my interest in these characters petered out pretty quickly in the `80s, but I have to hand it to Marvel for giving this much-maligned property another shot, especially in a time where companies tend to ignore older characters in favor of creating new ones by the second and disposing of them twice as quickly. I have always maintained that any misguided concept, no matter how ridiculous, can find its purpose in the hands of a capable editor or writer. It may take almost 2 decades, but it can be done!
UNTOLD TALES OF THE NEW UNIVERSE collect 6 stories set in the New Universe of the '80s, taken from the one-shots UTOTNU: Star Brand, Justice, Nightmask, DP7, & Psi-Force; Amazing Fantasy #18-19; and New Avengers #16. The book begins with the Green Lantern-ish Star Brand, in perhaps the best story of the bunch, as a dimensional traveler explains to Ken Connell the nature of Marvel's multiverse and shows him how he has squandered the power of the Star Brand. This story plays brilliantly on the actual faults of the original New Universe - it's part parody, part accusation. Then there's Mark Hazzard: Merc, in a short tale that packs an unexpected, humorous punch. Next is Justice, coming to realize the chain of events that could be set in motion by his judgments. Then Spitfire, the armored wonder, must avert the Chernobyl disaster, and Nightmask finally gets around to battling his foe The Gnome for the life of his sister, in a story that was never finished in the original series. The collection rounds off with the team DP7 being recruited to battle an ancient evil , Kickers Inc. literally go to Hell, and Psi-Force battling... another Psi-Hawk? Featured creators include writers Jeff Parker, Tony Lee, Peter David, Fred van Lenten, CB Cebulski, and Tony Bedard; and artists Javier Pulido, Leonard Kirk, Carmine di Giandomenico, Arnold Pander, MD Bright, and Russ Braun, with a cover by John Romita Jr.
Overall, I was pleasantly surprised with the stories in this collection. Does that mean they were all perfect? No - in fact, a couple felt like filler. Unfortunately, there is an even bigger problem with UNTOLD TALES OF THE NEW UNIVERSE: some of the writers and artists didn't take a proper "eighties" mindset for their stories. These stories are all supposed to fit in with the original titles, so having characters use modern slang in their speech or appear with modern hairstyles and attire doesn't set the mood. Alternatively, some creators go overboard with reminding you it's the `80s, with clumsy references to the culture of the time, and then going a step further to explain the reference in case you didn't get it. It's a stain on an otherwise enjoyable collection of stories, but it certainly doesn't ruin it. I'm now looking forward to what Warren Ellis will do with these characters in the upcoming NEWUNIVERSAL.

Remarkable Lady.......2007-06-15
I got this book because I am very interested in manic depression (or bipolar disorder) and I knew Gene Tierney had gone through the disease. My purchasing this book also had to do with my admiring Miss Tierney as an actress, for giving astounding performances in films like "Leave Her to Heaven". What I found was not only a fascinating read written by an honest and courageous lady, but also a very well written account of a victim of MD. I learned many things from this book and I must say, Miss Tierney was extremely honest, chose her words well, and most of all, wrote about famous celebrities like her former husband Oleg Cassini as well as former boyfriend John Kennedy without showing any negative feelings towards them. She writes with such class and frankness, making this a must for every fan of her work.
Mixed emotions.......2005-11-12
I bought this book because I have become a huge fan of Ms. Tierney's films. I was curious about her life and movie career. I read most of the book with a puzzled look on my face and feeling several moments of deja vu because she repeated thoughts and memories over and over and would jump from subject to subject without rhyme or reason. I would read some paragraphs over just to try and make sense of the whole thing. I do think she was intelligent and a loving mother, which I think the birth of her handicapped child literally drove her insane. My final thoughts of the book as I finished were feelings of sadness for her and truly wishing I did not know about her the things I had read because now I will watch her films through different eyes.
GA. Read.......2005-09-18
I had seen some old movies with Gere Tierney and even purchased some from Amazon. While brousing the TV channels I came across a biography of Gene. This left some unanswered questions so I ordered the book. It was a great read and very informative. I did not know that the Agatha Christy novel "The Mirrow Cracked" was based on Gene Tierneys life.
An Insightful Autobiography.......2002-07-01
Called the most beautiful woman in movie history by Darryl Zanuck (founder of 20th Century Fox), actress Gene Tierney also proves herself a good and insightful writer with this accomplished "self-portrait". I purchased this on a whim in an antique store, and have read it several times. I appreciate her honesty regarded her psychological problems and the fun tidbits about Hollywood life in the 1940s. It's unfortunate that the name Gene Tierney is so unfamiliar these days. She was a talented actress and writer, and I enjoy her work very much.
Self Portrait by Gene Tierney.......2000-05-15
When I asked Amazon to locate this book for me it was as a result of watching Biography on A & E. After presenting their program on Gene Tierney, they told viewers about the book. I was extremely pleased that Amazon located a copy for me even though it was out of print. Not only was I pleased to obtain the book but I was extremely pleased with its content. I have been a fan of Miss Tierney since first seeing her in movies. I especially liked "Laura" and "Leave Her to Heaven" and have videos of both. But nothing can compare with the intimate details she revealed in her life story and I shall treasure the book always. Unfortunately she was swept up in the dark side of the motion picture industry where she was taken advantage of in so many ways. Although we, her fans, were cheated when she retired from motion pictures so soon, I cannot help but feel she did the right thing by turning her back on the sad memories brought about during those years and seeking a happier life. The book ranks high on the list of treasures in my personal library.
Book Description
Called the most beautiful woman in movie history, Gene Tierney starred in a number of 1940s classics, including Laura, Leave Her to Heaven and The Ghost and Mrs. Muir. Her on-screen presence and ability to transform into a variety of characters made her a film legend. Her personal life was a whirlwind of romance (she married a count, was engaged to a prince, and was courted by a future president) and tragedy (her daughter was born with severe retardation and Tierney herself struggled with mental illness). After years of treatment, including electroshock therapy that erased portions of her life from her memory, she triumphantly returned to Hollywood in the biggest comeback of any star in history.
This, the first complete biographical work since the actresses' death on November 6, 1991, covers everything from her birth in 1920; through her rise to fame, turbulent love life, fight with mental illness, and triumphant return to Hollywood; to her retirement in her 40s and death. Beginning with a foreword by her daughter, Christina Cassini, an extensive filmography provides the cast and crew of each film and television appearance, production and release dates, running times, and a brief synopsis. Additional information covers locations, box office take, awards, behind-the-scenes details, and memorable quotes. The work includes many rare photographs from both on and off screen.

My new favorite book.......2007-05-21
My name is 'Tierney' and when I was old enough to understand how I got my unusual name, my mom showed me a photo of a beautiful woman and explained that she was a very famous Hollywood actress from a long time ago. That photo was Gene Tierney.
I had heard that her life was very sad. I didn't know a lot about her and was intrigued about what happened to her. My mom had this book and I picked it up one day and just started reading bits and pieces of it. All of a sudden I looked at the clock and over an hour had passed! I ended up going to the very beginning and read the entire book in three nights. It was amazing!!!
Now that I know about her life and what she went through and how she overcame such sadness, I'm honored to be named after Gene Tierney. I knew she was beautiful but I had no idea what strength and courage she had. This book tells the whole story and makes you wish there were more people in the world with as much grace as she had during her lifetime.
Unforgettable Gene Tierney.......2007-05-02
A fascinating story and a wonderful reading experience, that begs for more. I wish it could have lasted longer. Vogel writes for a wide audience. The narration moves along effortlessly, holds the reader's attention and does not let go. Photographs are chronologically ordered, and placed beside the text for maximum effect.
This book tells the life story of one of the most beautiful women who ever lived. But, sadly, her great success as an actress was followed by great suffering and tragedy in her personal life - all undeserved.
After reading the story and seeing her photos, I was so taken by Gene Tierney that I felt she should be listed on the Periodic Table of Elements in view of her long half-life, overwhelming radiance, and unforgettable roles that still mesmerize people today.
Gene Tierney.......2006-08-19
Well written and insightful. I was especially interested in Daria as my son is deaf from war time German measles. Good book, good to know her famiily carries on.
Very entertaining and informative read........2006-03-17
Gene Tierney: A Biography is a thorough look into the world, both personal and professional, of one of Hollywood's most beautiful, most troubled and most underrated actresses ever seen. This book covers everything from her childhood, teenage years, stage work, break into Hollywood, loves, marriages and of course the tragedy of her eldest daughter's birth that led to her mental collapse and years of suffering. In and out of mental institutions at the height of her career, Gene Tierney made an amazing comeback after a decade away from the industry she loved. Her eleven year marriage to fashion icon, Oleg Cassini, was rocky but it seems she was the one true love of his life. Although he became engaged to Grace Kelly after their divorce, she eventually dumped Cassini for Prince Rainier and he never remarried.
I would love for McFarland to start publishing at least some of their photographs in color and that's the only reason why I gave this book four stars instead of five.
Fantastic book! It'll make you cry, for sure.
Bought one for myself and one for my father. Fantastic!.......2006-03-15
I initially borrowed this book from my local library, read it, enjoyed it and returned it. I told my father about it and he wanted to read it too. Went back to my library and someone else had borrowed it in the interim. There was even a waiting list of two people ahead of me to borrow it when it came back in. In the end I purchased two copies. One for me and one for my elderly father who remembers seeing Gene Tierney's films in theaters when they were initially released. There has been a lot written about how fantastic this book is so I won't bother to repeat what others have already written. Just wanted to convey how much I enjoyed the book and that story of how I came to own my copy.

A Very Interesting Read.......2005-01-04
If you're not sure about the monetary system, nobility order and social & economic situations from the Victorian Era, this is the book to read. It will help you understand the Victorian Society as well as Sherlock Holms' & Dr. Watson's mindsets to some extent.
Although some comments are not entirely correct (coming from a avid reader of Sherlock Holmes Cannons), this book is really fun to read and is an excellent addition to your Complete Sherlock Holmes collection.
Great book for beginners and long-time Sherlockians!.......1999-12-10
Very informative, and a lot of fun to read. For new readers, a great introduction to Holmes and his world; for old-timers like me, a fun refresher course! Highly Recommended!

For its outstanding knowledge of the game's inner-workings, The Idiots Guide To Poker Tells is a compact and portable paperback, and very strongly recommended to all poker players whether they are playing for high-stakes or peanuts.
Useless.......2006-03-08
I'm a regular player and was really looking forward to this. But I was even more disappointed when it arrived. Reads like the writer has never played, just a rehash of cliches. Save your money.
