Customer Reviews:
Great format but would appreciate a little less nudity........2007-09-05
I know this probably doesn't bother most people but I just thought I would post this for people like us who do care. I got this book for our homeschool but there was just too many nude paintings (some of them quite provocative) for our taste. There was also a section in the modern art portion of the book that had cartoon drawings of nude artists smearing paints on their bodies and then on a huge canavas. I think that was a little over the top for children. I am fine with the other modern art stuff but that was unnessesary. Please don't respond to this and tell me about the virtues of using nudes in art. I understand the reasoning behind it all and all I can say is that it just isn't for our family and I wanted to let other parents know who may be concerned about this as well.
Love this one.......2007-08-14
A great book with all sort of info and pictures of famous works of art. Great intro for kids. Great for a homeschooling family. :)

Beautiful, informative, and fun for kids too.......2004-07-10
I love Usborne books, and this book appealed to me because I wanted to give my children a greater appreciation and understanding of art. But the best reference book in the world is worthless if kids won't read it, and when I bought it I was a bit afraid it would sit on our book shelf unopened.
When I told my kids, ages 10 and 12, that I wanted to sit down and read a few pages with them before a trip to the art museum, neither was very enthusiastic about it. But the book is written in a very engaging manner and by the time we got through the first couple pages they were asking questions and asking to read more. I later found my older daughter with her head back in the book, reading avidly. In the past few days both girls have continued to read deeper into the book, ask questions, and show me paintings they particularly like.
This book is a wonderful resource because it contains a wealth of information for adults as well as kids, and it is interesting enough to keep both kids and adults reading.

The Music of Frederick Sommer.......2000-10-06
Although it would presumptuous of us to review our own recording, we do want to provide some information which has not been given.
"The Music of Frederick Sommer" is portfolio containing a CD (Walton Mendelson electronic wind instrument and Stephen Aldrich electronic keyboard, 59 minutes long), with the 15 scores performed on the CD reproduced in color, at 9 1/2 inches by 12 inches. The performances were recorded between April, 1996, and August, 1997. They have been grouped into two suites, and several scores have been performed twice.
The best description of the style of performance would be that it sounds like an amalgam of Satie, Poulenc, and Hindemith for violin and piano.
In 1934, Sommer (1905-1999) visited Los Angeles. Walking through the art museum one day, he noticed a display of musical scores. He saw them not as music, but as graphics, and found in them an elegance and grace that led him to a careful study of scores and notation.
He observed that the best music was visually more effective and attractive. He assumed that there was a correlation between music as we hear it and its notation; and he wondered if drawings that used notational motifs and elements could be played. He made his first scores, "drawings in the manner of musical scores," that year.
Of Sommer's known works, his photographs. drawings, glue-color on paper, and writings, it is only these scores that were a part of his creative life throughout the entirety of his artistic career. He was still drawing elegant scores in 1998.
Technology and thirty years of playing the scores have come together to allow us to make a performance on CD. While the scores don't have specific notes, the graphic elements direct the improvised performance. Every performance is different, but the score, through its visual organization, guides us.

Book Description
Five hundred years ago an Italian whose name, translated into English, meant Christopher Dove, came to America and began a process not of discovery, but incursion -- "a ruthless, angry search for wealth" that continues to the present day. This provocative and superbly written book gives a true assessment of Columbus's legacy while taking the first steps toward its redemption. Even as he draws a direct line between the atrocities of Spanish conquistadors and the ongoing pillage of our lands and waters, Barry Lopez challenges us to adopt an ethic that will make further depredations impossible. The Rediscovery of North America is a ringingly persuasive call for us, at long last, to make this country our home.

Same old argument.......2004-09-15
When I was taking my Native American History class I discovered that there were two types of history. The first type dealt with Native Americans in a negative way the common steriotypes Native Americans were protrayed as dirty durnken and savage even in the modern average world.
The secound type is the opposite end of the spectrum Native Americans loved the land and were at peace with it. Than the big bad europians came along and killed them. But even in the modern day they carry on stoicly in the face of insermountable odds.
The truth is somewhere in between the two extremes and it is not hard to figure out into which of the two catogories this book falls. It pretends to be a serious historical approach but really is just prograganda. What happened to Native Americans was awful but people hhave been getting loads of crap dumped on them since the begining of time. Just because one group has been through a lot doesn't make them any better or noble than any of the rest of us.
Overall-I have a problem with the price 72 pages for 9 dollars?? Come on. I also think the book fails both as a historical work and as call to arms(its never quite sure which it is)
Get this book if this is your thing but do your research first.
Speaks to our times..........2003-02-07
As eloquent as it is insightful. Barry Lopez moves us to see and question. A true gift from writer to reader.
The Rediscovery of North America.......2001-01-12
Time is a precious commodity, and it is hard to find time to do all that must be done. But, the short time that is needed to read this book will be well worth spending.
Very poignant in today's world of rapid development.......1998-08-04
Extremely good prose. A poignant testimony to the loss of the Earth's resources in the face of historical and current development. Highly recommend adding this to your book collection if you have any affinity to the natural world.

A good introduction to the Maya...........1999-06-02
Mr. Gallenkamp's short book provides a good, informative introduction into the history of the Maya. He has included a synopsis of each era, focusing on the Classic; and he gives helpful details about the transitions from one age to the next. He also has written some fascinating chapters about the stories of the churchmen, explorers, and archeologists who first dared define the Maya: Landa, Stephens, Thompson, Ruz, et. al. In my nascent studies of the Maya, this short history has given me enough knowledge and information to feel comfortable while challenging my imagination and curiousity to continue on my journey.

Book Description
British and American soldiers, naval officers, mining engineers, merchants, businessmen and wealthy travellers flocked to the countries of Latin America following their independence from Spain and Portugal. Most such travellers were entirely ignorant of the continent and expected instant success: easy money, the cheap acquisition of fertile land, military glory or vast mineral wealth. Few of them realized their ambitions, for the overthrow of the old regimes had not brought peace, liberalism and the social conditions in which foreign investment could thrive. To their shock and disgust, they encountered the same civil strife, corruption, squalor and "barbarism", religious intolerance and petty jealousies that had prevailed in earlier centuries.
The experiences of these travellers, as noted in their diaries, journals and letters, are presented in this book. It should be of interest to modern-day travellers as well as to historians and students of Latin America. A strength of the book is its coverage of political, business and civilian history as well as military life, throughout the continent.

Product Description
" Life on the Shoulder is about a journey on many levels. It is one that travels back through time, experiencing the places known and recorded in the pages of history and the journals of Meriwether Lewis and William Clark. It is also a journey through the current American west, an area of diverse environments, staggering beauty and powerful natural forces. The landscape also proved to be one of emotional hills and valleys, mountains of elation, pits of exhaustion, prairies of boredom, storms of fear, anger and frustration, and stunning sun flashes of inspiration. "It was a discovery of self and my connection with everything outside of my being. The spiritual lessons taught on this journey made me understand how narrow our scope of life can be, how much energy is wasted on worry, and how, at the moment when we feel we are most alone, we are truly in the company of our most trusted and dependable guides. As a great deal of time was spent literally riding "on the shoulder" of many roads and passing many sights, I, in turn, was passed by many other travelers, be they in cars, trains or logging trucks. The analogy to life became quickly apparent. By living a "life on the shoulder," one allows oneself to step back and permit life's events to unfold naturally, at their own pace, with acceptance and without force. While Lewis and Clark have been credited with exploring the western wilderness, I believe the exploration of the greatest wilderness lies just beneath the skin in the hearts and minds of us all." Book Description
An enlightening critical examination of Joss Whedon's Angel after the character's departure from Buffy's Sunnydale In 1999, Joss Whedon spun-off the vampire with a soul from Buffy the Vampire Slayer into his own show, Angel. Recast in L.A., Angel developed its own preoccupations, exploring a darker vision of alienation, atonement and the fight for redemption. The series ended in 2004, but its legion of loyal fans continue to petition the WB network for a new spin-off or motion picture on the 'Save Angel' website and other online fansites. This book covers all five seasons, discussing the cinematic aesthetics of Angel, its music, shifting portrayals of masculinity, the noir Los Angeles setting, the superhero, and horror. A complete episode guide is included.

Not as good as the Buffyverse academic books.......2007-03-31
Not a terrible book. Just not as good as the Buffyverse readers -- I was looking for more ethics oriented material, but at least there IS an Angel reader. Still haven't read all of it, but it's worth if if you are an Angel fanatic and want something besides fanfic.
Essays and Analysis of a Supernatural Soap Opera.......2006-05-09
Stacy Abbott has done a wonderful job assembling a diverse set of essays into a very readable book for fans of Joss Whedon's ANGEL. The diversity of writers with different voices and opinions come together here to analyze and comment on subjects such as: gender politics, film noir elements, humor (in it's many forms), cinematic language, and music as a narrative agent. If any of these areas spark your interest, I would suggest picking up this book and giving it a read. It may sound very academic, but while I found the essays a large step up from the usual fan writing in both tone and content, they are still highly readable and very enjoyable.
Reading Angel.......2006-03-23
Not a bad read for the dedicated Angel fan. I really enjoyed it. Some of the articles were a bit of a heavy read but entertaining. Worth reading.
Beginning the critical investigation of "Angel".......2005-11-18
"Reading Angel: The TV Spin-off With a Soul" is a collection of essays by academics from mostly the U.K. edited by Stacey Abbott, a Lecturer in Film and Television Studies at Roehampton University. Abbott does the introductory essay, "Kicking Ass and Singing 'Mandy': A Vampire in LA," that covers a lot of ground in touching on the moral ambiguity of Angel/Angelus, the elements of contradiction and self-parody, and the generic hybridity and Angel's visual style. That certainly gives you a sense of the scope of topic covered in these essays. More importantly, if you are not an academic, you should still be able to look at those topics and figure out what most of them are going to be about. After all, you do not need advanced degrees to recognize things like moral ambiguity and self-parody on "Angel," although generic hybridity might take some thought. On balance, fans of the late lamented WB series will find insights of interest in most of these chapters, although be forewarned there are some points where these academics dive into the deep end and start throwing names and theories around fast and furious.
Part One, "It Was a Seminal Show Cancelled by the Idiot Networks": Narrative and Style on "Angel": (1) "'Angel': Redefinition and Justification through Faith" by Phil Colvin looks at the character of Faith as being paradigmatic of the show and the character's mission statement; (2) "'Ubi Caritas'?: Music as Narrative Agent in 'Angel'" by Matthew Mills is a cursory look at the pivotal role music played in the show; (3) "Transitions and Time: The Cinematic Language of 'Angel'" by Tammy A. Kinsey looks at the visual transitions, prophetic visions and other cinematic experimentations, proving that there were was logic and significance to all those high speed montages; and (4) "A Sense of the Ending: Schrodinger's 'Angel'" by Roz Kaveney looks at senses of ending provided by the final season and episode, taking into consideration the possibility of a sixth season or future television movies.
Part Two: "The Big Wacky Variety Show We Call Los Angeles": The City of "Angel": (5) "Los Angelus: The City of Angel" by Benjamin Jacob details how elements of the real L.A. are combined with those from film noir, ; (6) "Outing Lorne: Performance for the Performers" by Stan Beeler examines the character as the microcosm to the macrocosm of the L.A. entertainment industry as well as high camp, and (7) "'LA's got it all': Hybridity and Otherness in "Angel"'s Postmodern City" by Sara Upstone considers the city as representing the Other, which makes it ideal for the a vampire with a soul.
Part Three: "Hell Incorporated": Wolfram & Hart's Big Bad: (8) "Gender Politics in 'Angel': Traditional vs. Non-Traditional Corporate Climates" by Janine R. Harrison contrasts how Lilah Morgan and Kate Lockley function in traditional corporate climates while Cordelia Chase and Fred Burkle become actualized in non-traditional corporate climates; (9) "The Rule of Prophecy: Source of Law in the City of 'Angel'" by Sharon Sutherland and Sarah Swan considers the show as riffing on the law genre and then links it to the rule of prophecy, which is not an obvious way to go but certainly interesting.
Part Four: "Trapped in What I Can Only Describe as a Turgid Supernatural Soap Opera": Issues of Genre and Masculinity in "Angel": (10) "The Dark Avenger: Angel and the Cinematic Superhero" by Janet K. Halfyard compares Angel to Superman and Batman, as well as recent cinematic vampires; (11) "'And Her Tears Flowed Like Wine': Wesley/Lilah and the Complicated(?) Role of the Female Agent on 'Angel': by Jennifer Stoy focus on the couple as the unlikely source of redemption and renewal in season four; (12) "From Rogue in the 'Hood to Suave in a Suit: Black Masculinity and the Transformation of Charles Gunn" by Michaela D. E. Meyer argues that Gunn's transformation questions the idea of black masculinity; (13) "'Nobody Scream...or Touch My Arms': The Comic Stylings of Wesley Wyndam-Pryce" by Stacey Abbott makes an interesting comparison between Angel and Wesley with Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis, developing both the importance of Wesley's comic relief in the early seasons and his ultimate transformation into something more; and (14) "'Angel''s Monstrous Monsters and Vampires with Souls: Investigating the Abject in 'Television Horror'" by Matt Hills and Rebecca Williams looks at how the show achieved horror despite violating generic categories.
Part Five: "Let's Go to Work": The Afterlife of the Spin-off with a Soul: (15) "Afterword: The Depth of 'Angel" and the Birth of 'Angel' Studies" by Rhonda V. Wilcox and David Lavery looks at how academics are starting to write about the show more now that it is over, although not nearly as much as they do about "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," and (16) "'We'll Follow "Angel" to Hell...or Another Network": The Fan Response to the End of 'Angel'" is a brief look at the effort to save the show.
The back of the book has a list of "Angel" episodes, and a list of articles and convention papers for Further Reading, some of which will be accessible only to academics who attended the "Slayage" Conference on "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," but others of which are available online and several of which are already in various "BtVS" criticism books sitting up on my shelf. The idea is that this collection constitutes a start to further critical explorations of the vampire with a soul and the Fang Gang (sorry, that just does not have the same cache as the Scoobies on "BtVS") and I already have ideas for a couple of essays.

Book Description
John Nunn is one of the most highly regarded chess writers in the world. He has carefully selected thirty modern games to help the reader understand the most important aspects of chess and to illustrate modern chess principles in action. Virtually every move is explained using words that everyone can understand. Jargon is avoided as far as possible. Almost all the examples are taken from the 1990s and show how key ideas are handled by the grandmasters of today. The emphasis is on general principles that readers will be able to use in their own games, and detailed analysis is only given where it is necessary. Each game contains many lessons, but to guide the reader through the most important ideas in each phase of the game, the thirty games are grouped thematically into those highlighting opening, middlegame and endgame themes.
Customer Reviews:
Whoa there! This book is NOT for most of us..........2007-08-12
If you look at the book description (above), you get the idea that this book is focused on teaching fundamentals to non-experts. Wrong. The title's obvious parallel to Chernev's [excellent] work (Logical Chess Move by Move) only reinforces this misleading perception.
Each chapter does begin with a few paragraphs on a fundamental principle of chess. And the first moves are described as if to total novices. But as soon as Nunn gets beyond those first few moves, you'd better be able to follow lots of algebraic notation with very few visuals, because the vast majority of this book is variation intensive, and thus useless to non-experts who don't want to spend hours getting through a few pages at a time.
On the other hand, if you ARE an expert, then what's the point of reviewing fundamentals that are already second-nature? In that case, this is just a group of highly analyzed games.
This book sits useless on my shelf. If you haven't read Chernev's book, then you're better off getting IT because it is what it says it is.
Chess.......2007-01-11
My word; I took up this magnificent game only a very short while ago, and now, three months later, I'm hooked. To learn, I saw at once the need for expert guidance, and I can confirm that there is plenty of guidance to be had, and most of it turned upon pure vanity. I tried CD's and numerous online instructions, and purchased various unreadable books, and until I came across 'Understanding Chess' by John Nunn, through Amazon. Com, I was at my wits end trying to understand the most simple game plans, tactics and strategies. This book gave me instant confidence. It is a real chess page turner, full of exciting plots and positions, encouragement and really good advice. So much so, I have it next to me when I play online and in this regard I've already begun to win a few games against much more experienced and very much stronger players. The key lies in its simplicity of approach. It is well written and so easy to understand. It does for chess everything that is essential in developing the skills demanded. For all those keen to take up chess, to improve performance, to gain greater advance, and to discover in this ever more fascinating game the fruits of clear thinking and the joys and rewards in winning. Chess is not a game which can be self taught overnight. The essence is long term, so one needs something constant to guide one along the way, and this book will most certainly do that for me.
Instructive, but too complex for novice. .......2006-12-06
This is a very popular and famous book, and John Nunn is a well-known chess writer. Almost every move is explained deeply in this book. But there is one problem with this book: For whom did Nunn write this book? I'm confused because, in a specific game the first move "1.e4" is explained as if the reader is beginner or a novice. But later in the same game, Nunn includes a lot of long and complex variants in several analyses after a specific move, analyses that are only useful for a strong chess player. For me it seems like the author couldn't decide for whom he wrote this book for, and that sure makes this book not one of the best "move-by-move" books. The games chosen, for instance game 20 between Kasparov and Shirov is to complex, to explain weak colour complex for a novice/beginner. And some games presented in the book are actually exceptions from basic guidelines, e.g. "don't keep your king in the centre, but castle quickly", guidelines that an intermediate player should follow.
Improvers should instead try books like McDonald's "The Art of Planning" or Giddins "50 Essential Chess Lessons". Beginners should try Chernev's "Logical Chess Move by Move"
Great Analysis for Skilled Chess Players.......2006-09-16
John Nunn takes games that are instructive and gives very (very!) detailed analysis on them. This book is well suited for an experienced chess player who had already gone through the other "every move analyzed for lessons" books for beginning and intermediate players. Popular approach? You bet! it works very well for helping you understand what is happening in each game.
John Nunn is very accurate in his detailed analysis. He does expect the reader to have basic knowledge so doesn't spend time going over the simple general rules, but focuses on what a good player needs to know to get getter. Sometimes, he does go off on a tangent with some of the variations and maybe could have spent a little more time explaining the plan instead of just the variation. This one of the top books of its type for the advanced chess player.
An essential work to have for every tournament player.......2006-04-22
I own Irving Chernev's Logical Chess Move by Move and just finished Dr. Nunn's outstanding work. The objective annotations and manageable variations will help any tournament player with their over the board analysis. If you play tournaments, or just want a great sample of tournament games from the late 90s early 2000s, this is the work!
