Book Description
Sex sells. It's one of the oldest and most effective tricks in the book. The challenge for graphic designers, however, is to incorporate sexuality into their work in ways that are classy rather than coarse, sensual rather than smutty, provocative rather than pornographic.
This arresting volume shows how top graphic designers have leveraged the universal notion of sex to create attention-grabbing yet high-quality artistic work. Covering every medium, from print to the Web, Sex Graphics showcases images that incorporate sex in ways that range from subtle to clever to shocking. Some images hint at the act of sex itself; others flirt with humorous stereotypes. Some exude romantic overtones, and others, erotic ones. Some speak to adults, others to teens.
Taken together, this alluring collection underscores thatwith skill and finessesex can play a powerful and positive role in the creation of compelling graphic designs.

Book Description
The techniques first developed for shoujo, or manga intended for female readers, have now become the standard in all of modern manga. This edition in the popular series reveals these techniques in extraordinary detail and precision.
Book Description
From the author of Becoming Mae West—an in-depth look at the Silver-Screen legend who forever changed America’s idea of the leading man
Tango pirate, gigolo, powder puff, Adonis—all have been used to describe the silent-film icon known as Rudolph Valentino. From his early days as a taxi dancer in New York City to his near apotheosis as the ultimate Hollywood heartthrob, Rudolph Valentino (often to his distress) occupied a space squarely at the center of controversy. In this thoughtful retelling of Valentino’s short and tragic life—the first fully documented biography of the star—Emily W. Leider looks at the Great Lover’s life and legacy, and explores the events and issues that made him emblematic of the Jazz Age. Valentino’s androgynous sexuality was a lightning rod for fiery and contradictory impulses that ran the gamut from swooning adoration to lashing resentment. He was reviled in the press for being too feminine for a man; yet he also brought to the screen the alluring, savage lover who embodied women’s darker, forbidden sexual fantasies.
In tandem, Leider explores notions of the outsider in American culture as represented by Valentino’s experience as an immigrant who became a celebrity. As the silver screen’s first dark-skinned romantic hero, Valentino helped to redefine and broaden American masculine ideals, ultimately coming to represent a graceful masculinity that trumped the deeply ingrained status quo of how a man could look and act.

A Bit Condescending.......2006-02-16
I was disappointed in this book because I really felt that she looked down on Valentino, and many times insulted him by calling him "naive", and putting down his acting abilities in his films, etc. I also felt that she spent too much time and too many pages on printing the bad reviews of his films, and not enough of the positive ones!!!
In this case, I feel that this woman did not understand how difficult the film industry is, and obviously she has never worked in or on a film.
She was more like a critic that looked down on Valentino, and even defended Natasha, who never really loved him! She did not understand Valentino, and how difficult show business can be for a star that is set apart from the rest.
There were many times when I was really angry with this author. She neglected the human side of Valentino, and concentrated more on everyone around him, mostly the negative.
I do not like this woman... Rudy would have been upset at this book.
A Masterpiece About Old Hollywood.......2005-12-07
Of all the biographies I have read, Emily Leider's is the best--and I read many. Leider looks at Valentino's life in an objective way. She reveals a lot about his childhood and struggling years in America. She takes down scandalous myths (about Valentino being a "gigolo"), while revealing his flaws. I find some of the reviewers complaints without merit. Leider in no way is homophobic; she just strikes down the homosexual myths spread about Valentino. (I suppose some people wish for certain accusations for be true.) Leider reveals a lot about the silent star before stardom, career highs, and after his death. Leider deserves a lot of credit for this book. It is underappreciated. A true gem.
A First Rate Biography .......2005-06-15
I have seen other books on Rudolph Valentino but was always skeptical since 'Rudy' has been dragged through so many tabloid type write-ups but this one appeared to be a valid and thoroughly researched work. I am delighted that I bought it. At long last, Rudy is shown as both the man and the actor. There are times when Ms. Leider has to state that "he may have..." but it is necessary when Rudy's early days in New York are open to guessing what he may have done. When there is no record available, Ms. Leider takes the high road rather than interjecting a definite action the young immigrant made. I found it difficult to put this book down. It is a page turner. I found myself feeling as if I knew Rudy and I liked him. I didn't want him to die! Like Jean Harlow, he didn't seek medical help until it was too late.
Both Harlow and Valentino have been subjects of author Irving Shulman. Those books are to be avoided at all costs. Instead, go with David Stenn's definitive biography on Jean entitled "Bombshell: The Life and Death of Jean Harlow". Like Emily Leider, he did his research leaving no stone unturned. As for those reviews who call Leider's work "homophobic", I disagree. There is simply no evidence that Valentino was gay or bisexual. He was not homophobic and there may have been one fling with a man but if no evidence is present then one cannot assume otherwise that Valentino was heterosexual. Like James Dean, people often want him to have been bisexual or gay. Ms. Leider states that both women and men were attracted to Rudy and that is true. The same holds true for Valentino. There is a certain vulnerability and boyishness about him that is attractive. But take note how she refutes Pola Negri's statements that she and Rudy were engaged. Rudy was down to earth and not histrionic like Pola.
The films themselves are crucial and it is sad to learn how many are lost such as "The Young Rajah". Hopefully, it may be discovered like "Beyond The Rocks", his only film with Gloria Swanson.
This book is a keeper. It is alive and the author brings Rudy from his pedestal and shows the young man and his many turmoils with the press and insecure American men! If anyone were to ask me what book to read on Valentino, this is the one. I am grateful to Emily Leider for showing us Rudy, warts and all. He was often foolish in spending, in love and he was no businessman
What we have here is, after so many years, the real Rudy.
Very Powerful.......2005-04-19
Ms Emily W.Leider has brought Rudolph Valentino to life in this book. The reason because Leider has researched and spent the time to go into fine detail about the people who knew him to show us all different characters, details about his Mother, father, lovers and close friends, adds only strength and character to himself.
Great detail about his wives, Jean Acker first wife (on paper only) A smart women, who I feel knew what she was doing, who knew how to tap into Valentino's emotions and wallet. Part time friend and always on hand to throw the Valentino name out there when money seem required she continued to use his name for financial gain. Natasha Rambova A more colourful character cultured, Sophisticated also a dancer, creative, a modern day's women of her time and his soul mate....... and for him, her parents had money, and social standing. Love and passion they both deeply shared. Women caused him a whole lot of trouble, Ms Leider writes more detail but gets the point across spot on.
His elegant mother she was long gone, but I feel she would have set things straight for him, she was a fine strong willed women and the only stable women he had in his life, a women that he needed just to sort out all his worries like she had done for him so many times before.
He was no businessman which he never denied, a man so cultured knowing many languages and sophisticated in every way always trying to better himself and had suffered for his art so much, did not teach himself the business side of things. As for dealing with the film studio bosses he was up against businessman with education trained in strategy. In European circle's and definitely British ones (To coin a phrase "My word is my bond") also from hearing through my own grandparents nothing was in writing back then a handshake was an understanding, that the handshake was a man's word. Studio bosses although gave out their word, when it came down to it, the old...... you needed to get that in writing ploy worked wonders for them, which out smarted most of the stars at the studio's of the 20's all to be taken advantage of, simply because the studio's knew most star's did not have the educational upbringing to understand the boardroom business strategies.
As for his sexuality well from what I've been reading of the 20's, Who really knew who was doing what and with who, affairs, scandal and swinging (and have things changed in our time..... I think not) well the 20's are filled to the brim with it. So it would have surprised me if I found out he hadn't participated in any one of these three. Ms Leider will only write what she has discovered in her research and nothing more, remember proof is needed to write anything concrete on a person sexuality.
In all, the book tells you what you need to know, I know big fans are more passionate about Valentino and pull on any inaccuracy made from this book, But for me I thought Ms Leider did real good, I just wanted to know his Life story and it's all there. Congratulations to Ms Leider for taking a good crack at this, it's been well covered and well worth a read.
As ever, Valentino just out of reach..........2005-02-17
This is a surprisingly dry book about one of the most colorful performers of the golden age of silent film. Leider's obvious bias against delving into the homosexual side of Valentino's complex personality is the book's fatal flaw. Only one indisputable homosexual affair is begrudgingly admitted, and its impact on Valentino's marriage to the (bisexual) Natasha Rambova, which fell apart shortly thereafter, is downplayed. Hey Emily, the guy married a lesbian and a bisexual, can you say "beard"? Apparently not. The details of Valentino's film work are interesting for buffs, but there sems to have been little attempt to corroborate the many rumors of Valentino's gay life, while no attempt to discredit same is overlooked. I can only guess that Leider feels that the mystique of Valentino would be tarnished by acknowledging what seems fairly obvious - he swung both ways. This is homophobic. Valentino's bisexuality enhances his allure, which continues to attract fans over 80 years after his (tragic, stupid and preventable) premature death. Reading this book will give you good insights into his career, his talent, his lack of business sense - but Valentino the man remains, as ever, just out of reach...

Who Wrote this?.......2004-09-02
I'm not going to slam this book because I'm sure it has it's place in a novice's sheet music library, but I am going to give it one star based on my personal opinion as an intermediate/advanced acoustic guitar player.First of all if you're not a stickler and just want the main idea of a chord progression for a few dylan songs then ignore this review you won't mind or notice what I have. On the other hand if you want to learn to play these songs in the same key and note for note from the greatest hits album then this book isn't what your looking for. In my opinion this is a fake book. The degrees seem to be right and for the strumming songs you could transpose and a adjust for dylan's free style vocals but for "don't think twice, it's alright"-which is the the main song I bought the book for-the tabs are wrong. There are no trills or hammer ons or pull offs which can distinctly be heard even by a novice. Also the tab for "Blowing in the Wind" is missing a few notes and the intro in addition to most of the other songs in the book
is totally different like the writer heard the song once picked it out by ear and then just decided to make up whatever else he felt like.Nothing personal to the author, but in addition to other books I've seen this one should deffinitly have the word fakebook on the cover. Anything that doesn't, I'd expect more from.
Best Dylan songbook.......2000-07-17
This is great Dylan songbook! The best starting point for a Dylan fan who wants to learn how to play those legendary songs. Simply the best songbook there is!

Free at last.......2007-09-12
Finally a book of varied puzzles to break the Sudoku addiction. If you make a point to listen to Will and Lianne on Sunday mornings, you have to get this collection of NPR on air challenges. Great fun while traveling.
Hard like on the radio.......2007-03-13
I really enjoy the Sunday Puzzle and it is much easier when Leann Hanson and Will Shortz are helping you. They are a fun and challenging diversion. Maybe I should eat more brain food...
Great Brainteaser Activities.......2005-08-05
I teach high school science and use these puzzles as warm-up activities to begin class. In addition to being fun, the puzzles increase my students vocabularies, improve their reasoning skills and just plain wake up their brains. Since the puzzles range from fairly basic to darn complicated, there's something for every level of student ability. I've used the puzzles from the first book (excellent, btw) for so long that I HAD to get this new book for the kids who are taking a second or third class from me. I have as much fun with these as my students do!

Book Description
In 1949 the first made-for-television cartoon series debuted on a major network. Tele-Comics embraced the popular cliffhanger serial genre, using nonmoving comic strip panels and a handful of radio actors to produce a show at a fraction of the cost accrued by a live show. Despite the success of Tele-Comics and a few other such shows, television cartoons languished until 1954 when Walt Disney produced Disneyland. From such pioneers as Tele-Comics and Crusader Rabbit to modern fare such as X-Men and Beavis and Butthead, this is the first reference book to detail animated cartoons made exclusively for television from 1949 through 1993. Each entry includes the show's title, network, studios and full production information when available. An essay blending plot description, critical commentary, and background information is also provided for each cartoon. A discussion of the voice artist concludes the work.
Customer Reviews:
The best book of its kind.......2003-03-07
This is one of those spectacular books that comes along every few years. It's complete, well-written, doesn't take itself too seriously (after all, it IS about cartoons!), & offers an expert's personal point of view (the author's) in addition to presenting all the factual details. My only complaint is that I wish the author had included entries for movie cartoon characters as well. Some of the cartoon characters included here originated in the movies (for example, Popeye, Woody Woodpecker), but are included here for various reasons that the author explains. Other movie characters, such as my personal favorite (Betty Boop) are omitted because the don't meet the criterion for inclusion. Mr. Erickson, please follow-up on this great book by writing one about the movie cartoon characters that are omitted here!
A very good but terribly outdated book........1999-02-07
It's a very good book. But if you want a book with all of today's cartoons you wouldn't find many here. A must-read if you have lived under a rock since 12/31/93(the book's cuttoff date).
Perfect for Generation X-ers.......1998-11-25
I am 25 years old and I loved being a kid. I remember waking up at 6:00 on Saturday morning and leaving the TV set at noon. This book is a great release for everyone who remembers watching fun shows as a kid. The book is basically an encyclopedia of all alphabetized cartoons from 1949- 1993. The book gives precise times, character names, summaries, and even name of the actual voices. The book brings you to the world of Scooby, Fred & Barney, Yogi, Lion-O, He-man, & Optimus Prime. This book is definitely a nostalgic journey to your youth. Buy it!
