5 out of 5 stars Fantastic !.......2004-04-11

This little paperback is packed with great information and great pictures. A must have for anyone interested in Renaissance Venice, it's well-organized and very easy to read.

5 out of 5 stars well-written, readable work on High Venetian art.......2001-09-23

This book is a great introdcution to Venetian art of the Renaissance, through its views of the major artists of the time (the Bellinis, Titian, Pollaiuolo, Veronese, etc.), but it incorporates enough social, religious, and political history that one not only gets a more-well rounded view of the Venice of the Renaissance, but also is not bogged down in excessive stylistic analysis. This makes Brown's work a wonderful introduction to the Venetian novice, which many amateur art-historians caught up with Florence and Rome (myself included) tend to be.

            Book Description

The aim of this dissertation is the resurrection of an important and long forgotten Venetian monument and of the female institution that stood behind its creation. Santa Caterina de' Sacchi is a little known church in the northern fringes of Venice closed to the public, stripped of its decoration, and neglected by scholars. Little suggests that it was once part of an old and prestigious Augustinian convent or that it featured an interior lavishly decorated by some of the most prominent artists of the day, including Jacopo Pahna il Giovane, Jacopo Tintoretto and Paolo Veronese who, for its high altar, created what was to become one of the most celebrated masterpieces of Venetian painting: the Mystical Marriage of St. Catherine of Alexandria. When the church was closed to the public at the beginning of the 20 th century, and Veronese's altarpiece was transferred to the Accademia Galleries, the church of Santa Caterina and the rest of its remarkable decoration fell virtually into oblivion while Veronese's work came to be considered in isolation, entirely detached from its original context. The disregard for the decorative ensemble, the absolute focus on a single painting and, above all, the utter neglect for the institution behind them, has long delayed an accurate evaluation of the social, cultural and artistic importance of the church of Santa Caterina within the context of Renaissance Venice and Venetian art. Its treasures—including Veronese's masterpiece—can not be understood in isolation from the monastic culture that produced them. This dissertation thus aims at reconstructing both the visual and social reality of the church and its treasures during the Renaissance, while investigating the nuns' impact on the visual arts as a group with a distinct identity.

This thing is abyssmal, just terrible and amatuerishly written. Nuff said.

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful, absolutely touching.......2001-11-13

This movie is unbelievably bello, carino, it is beautiful. The story is touching, the landscape is like candy, and the ending is beautiful as well. Lucy is a girl almost a woman, who is searching for her the answer to an intriguing passage she found in her mother's diary. She is also searching for the boy, now almost a man also, who she kissed the last time she visited the breathtaking Italian villa four years past. This movie will leave you feeling like you have just witnessed a moment of beauty so strong and so intense that you will feel changed.

3 out of 5 stars Not as good as the movie.......2001-06-05

This book was a spin-off from the movie, Stealing Beauty, and like most books based on movies, the book fails to capture the mood and romance of the original. Description of the Italian countryside in this books pales in comparision to Bertoluccis' masterful use of the camera. The magnetic appeal of the film is lost in second-rate descriptive attempts and clumsy use of words. Regretfully, the author gets caught up in retelling the movie's blocking and action scene by scene and forgets to focus on the characters and the story being told.

However, if you enjoyed following Lucy's coming of age story and want to relive the moments, you could like this book.

For people who loved the film, Stealing Beauty may be worth a look. For everyone else, I'm sure you could easily find a more thoughtful, worthwhile and enjoyable book to read.

                          Book Description

Bridesmaid dresses -- what are they good for? We've got to pay for them, wear them, and then find a spot for them in the back of the closet. Our best women friends, suddenly transformed into tasteful-white-dress-wearing brides, tell us, "You'll be able to wear this bridesmaid dress again." But we know better.

101 Uses for a Bridesmaid Dress, tongue firmly in cheek, pokes fun at the hopelessly horrible dress that a bride asks her "court" to don. These whimsical illustrations and silly suggestions, from cocktail napkins and shower curtains, to pony blankets and frilly jock straps, are a hilarious antidote to the bridesmaid dresses we'll never wear again.

                          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Attention Bridezillas: Your bridesmaids will appreciate the humor.......2007-06-26

I have to laugh at some of the reviews expecting "truly practical" uses for a bridesmaids dress. Attention bridezillas: no matter how beautiful you think the dresses are, they aren't! So stop taking you, your wedding and your ugly bridesmaids dresses so seriously and add some humor to the event, your bridesmaids will appreciate.

And, if you find that spending under $20 on a bridesmaids gift is too much as one reviewer wrote, do yourself a favor, cancel your wedding, because friends that are willing to put on an ugly bridesmaid dress, buy you shower and wedding presents, deserve to do it for someone that is willing to thank them properly and a gift of under $20 doesn't even begin to say thank you to these women for being a part of your special day.

This book will bring a smile to anyone that has ever worn a bridesmaids dress. I look forward to my bridesmaids using this book to ignite some creativity of things they can do with their dress now that the wedding is over. In fact, I think I'll be disappointed if they don't do something outrageous with the dresses!

Remember, above all your wedding should be about your deep love for one another, and celebrating that love--in other words HAVE FUN! This book will get your bridesmaids on the right start.

I made gift bags for my bridesmaid and included these cute books - I've always been a fan of little books like this, so it was perfect for me to give.

                          4 out of 5 stars Very Cute!.......2005-09-03

I bought his book to give to my bridesmaids as a gift. It is really cute. It's not meant to take seriously though. Very funny! I guess you could use some of the idea in the book. I hope they like it. My mom thought it was a cute idea. I also recommended it to a friend of mine who is getting married the week before me.

I wish I had seen some of the reviews on this website before I wasted my money on this book. I was expecting 101 practical ideas and felt so ripped off when I read the book...which took about 2 minutes. Definitely not the book to get if you want useful suggestions.

5 out of 5 stars Fun Gift for Bride's Maids.......2003-10-22

I gave my bridemaids this book at the my bridesmaid brunch. We began to read through it. Other tables were looking at us because we were not doing a very good job of not laughing outloud. One of the better humor books I have seen for this topic. Helped me enjoy my wedding even more.

A great gift for past bridemaids too.

                          Product Description

Few directors are characterized by both extraordinary film craft and the ironic reputation for lowbrow films. Despite his many achievements as a child of the Italian Cinecitta studios, however, Sergio Leone has been judged severely by writers who find his films lacking in ideas and moralists who find his films unduly cynical. Nevertheless, Leone’s greatest cinematic achievement, Once Upon a Time in the West, served to refute these criticisms while exposing the director’s unique romanticism and artistic ambition. As Leone’s fourth successful American western film, Once Upon a Time in the West earned him acclaim for liberating the western genre, restoring it to a place of antique American simplicity. The principal goal of this book is to sharpen an appreciation for Sergio Leone and his most famous American western. The first two chapters deal with the relationship between Once Upon a Time in the West and the western films that preceded it, particularly those of John Ford. Subsequent chapters concentrate on the central characters of Once Upon a Time in the West, with special attention to Jill, Leone’s first female protagonist and a surprisingly successful character, central to the plot and accorded a kind of existential strength usually reserved for men in Westerns. The sixth, seventh and eighth chapters address Leone’s visual style, which represents a unique fusion of Hollywood classicism and modernism, and reveals the influences of Italian Surrealism and the French New Wave. The final chapters explore the rhythm, romanticism, and musical character of Once Upon a Time in the West, espousing the theory that Leone’s approach to film is, above all, musical.

I am writing this review solely based on having had Prof. Fawell as a teacher. We did a small section on Leone's Once Upon a Time in The West, and I found it incredibly interesting. Prof. Fawell makes learning a joy, and if his book is anything like his teaching style, than i URGE you to buy his book!

In building my D&D library, I asked friends about these paperback guidebooks to the various classes. They told me to instead purchase the "complete" hardbacks now currently out. While the hardbacks may have updated 3.5 rules, they are also much more costly and filled with, in my opinion, rarely useful extras. If, like me, you're simply looking for something a cleric and/or paladin might want to see when leveling up during a campaign, I would highly suggest this book.

3 out of 5 stars The older book was better.......2002-11-15

I am referring to the Complete Guide to Paladins for 2nd edtion. That book had far more material in greater depth than Defenders does. Again, this book also seems underdone, like so many 3rd edition books. The most useful material was the section describing how the faiths of specific alignments, and deities, work. As for the rest, it is "overbalanced". Most of the feats are so "balanced" as to be worthless, as are the prestige classes. The kits found in the Complete Guide are better, I think, with real balance, not +'s and -'s canceling each other out. The organizations listed were a little better, but again, the Guide had more interesting ones. Although I have focussed on Paladins, the same holds for priests. The Complete Guide to Priests wasn't that good, so I can't recommend looking for it. Overall, I wouldn't bother buying this again just four about 10 pages of useful material.

                                  Book Description

Television opera - that is, opera commissioned for television - was one of the earliest attempts by television to bridge the distinction between high culture and popular culture: between 1951 and 2002, in Britain and the United States, over fifty operas were commissioned for television. This book discusses three case studies, the first a live broadcast, the second a video recording, and the third a filmed opera made for television: Gian Carlo Menotti's 'Amahl and the Night Visitors' (NBC, 1951; Benjamin Britten's 'Owen Wingrave' (BBC, 1971), taking into account Britten's earlier television experiences with 'The Turn of the Screw' (Associated Rediffusion, 1959) and 'Billy Budd' (NBC, 1952 and BBC 1966); and Gerald Barry's 'The Triumph of Beauty and Deceit' (1995), part of Channel 4's decision in 1989 to embark upon a series of six hour-long television operas. In each case, the composer's response to the demands of television, and his place within the production's hierarchy, are examined; and the effect of the formats and techniques peculiar to television on the process of composing are discussed. JENNIFER BARNES is Assistant Principal and Dean of Studies at Trinity College of Music, London. From its beginnings, television has relied on music to signal its message to the broadest market, and opera was a significant part of that plan. But whereas in opera the role of the composer is paramount and his vision provides the driving force, in opera commissioned for television there are other priorities, both practical and artistic. Over the decades, conflict of expectations, methods and authority have influenced the production of many television operas. To chart these changes, this work examines three, commissioned at twenty-year intervals - Menotti's 'Amahl and the Night Visitors', Britten's 'Owen Wingrave' and Barry's 'Triumph of Beauty and Deceit.Over fifty operas have been commissioned for television since the early 1950s. Examining changes in television techniques, Jennifer Barnes considers their impact on the role of the composer and questions whether television, in its rapid evolution, has abandoned early indigenous production methods, and with that its secrets of writing and producing opera for television.
