Book Description
Art. "Master collage artist Winston Smith snips glorious and terrible tree flesh from the magazines of our mind and pastes it. A mind is a terrible thing to paste. And Glorious!" --Wavy Gravy. "Collage is artistic monkey business which is quietly threating to become a fad. If it succeeds in this it will be, like Dadaism, another harmless little hoax perpetrated upon the art-loving public" --Life Magazine, 1943. "We live in a hi-tech robber-baron era as toxic and vicious as the rise of the industrial revolution ... The relentless bombardment of tabloid anti-news and advertsising overkill numbs and isolates us from each other and our own humanity. We are told we are not a community, but a marketplace ... Is plucking someone else's creation from its original context ... a legitimate way to communicate? In an age where it gets harder to tell where the cartoon ends and real life begins, the answer is a billboard size YES" -- Jello Biafra (from the Foreward). "Winston Smith's use of pop magzine images keeps in sharp focus the ever encroaching apocalyptic nightmare" -- S. Clay Wilson.

98 pages and worth every penny.......2000-10-30
Winston Smith takes retro drawings and paintings from thee original picture, and turns them into collages. Thee collages are intended to inform and amuse you. In thee opinion of me, Winston does with pictures what people like William S. Burroughs and Jello Biafra have done with words. Most of these pictures are very funny and very thought provoking. This book also makes for a great conversational piece for your coffee table or whatever. Also included are album covers he has done for Dead Kennedys, Green Day, Tijuana No! etc.. There is a four page pull-out of the banner for Tijuana No! and a two page pull-out for the cover to Dead Kennedys' album Bedtime for Democracy which you can find in thee music section of this site. I reccomend this book not only for punk rockers but for free thinkers of all shapes and sizes. There is so much to look at in one picture you can read this one again and again.

Book Description
Not since Kliban has there been a cat book this edgy. Edgy as in Bosco, the demonic Siamese with the out-of-focus eyes, razor-sharp fangs, and his own idea of Feng Shui. Or the half-shaved freak named Mr. Fliegel, who looks like a cross between a poodle and a lion. Mr. Fliegel shrugs and says, "Chicks dig me." Or Kato, resplendent in his Three Musketeers outfit: "One for all, blah blah blah . . . now just get me out of this @#%&ing costume!" Or Clark, whose hobby is eating other cats' food. Tina, who somehow always just misses the litter box . . . sucker. And the guilty-looking Clarence, caught with a Barbie doll in flagrante delicto. Clarence's defiant defense: "She was naked when I came in. . . ."
Just as Kliban got us to think about the cat as something far more interesting than an innocuous house pet, and Suzy Becker taught us that cats possess a Buddha-like wisdom (together Cat and All I Need to Know I Learned from My Cat have more than 2.6 million copies in print), Jim Edgar reveals yet another facet of the ever-mesmerizing animal. Brooding, deranged, antisocial, these are kitties with attitude and borderline personality problems--ah, but what hilarious fun it is to read about them. All 244 photographed in terrifying full color in their most unflattering moments, with a quote plus vital stats: name, breed, age, and hobby. Get to know them. Then see if you can ever forget them.

Bad Cat the book.......2007-09-16
Love this book! I got this as a gift because I really enjoyed the calendar.
Very funny!.......2007-08-13
I gave this book as a gift to a cat lover, and she can't stop talking about how much she really loves it! Lots of laughs!
Hilarious.......2007-07-11
As the human companion of two cats gone bad, I recognized WAAYYYY too many behaviors and expressions in this book. I've given it as a gift to other cat owners who also loved it. Also worth getting: the bad cats calendar. In this house, we're very hard pressed not to peek ahead (and if no one's looking, sometimes I do!).
Take it to the dentist!.......2007-07-08
Take this funny,handy-sized book with you when you have to sit somewhere in a waiting-room. It'll kill the time and relaxes your nerves. Even if you're not a cat lover, it will convince you that a cat (and its boss) has a mind if its own.
Hysterically funny - even if you love cats.......2007-06-30
I am a cat lover and owner (also own a small doglet.) I bought this calendar and keep it at work. My co-workers are used to hearing me laugh helplessly at least once a day. My advice: When things get rough at work - read the Bad Cats calendar!

good armchair traveling, too.......2005-03-03
I used to live in NYC, and still visit often...but not often enough. This well-researched book will be great for my next trip, as a walking tour guide; in the meantime, I'm having a lot of fun reading and remembering the movies and their locales.
I recommend this book to all travelers to NY!

Book Description
The early music of Claude Debussy was influenced by the work of Wagner, for whom he had great admiration. However, soon Debussy's music became more experimental and individualistic, as is clear in his first mature work Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun. Debussy quickly moved away from traditional techniques and produced the pictures in sound that led his work to be described as "musical Impressionism." This new biography--the first in English in 30 years--offers new insights into the life of this enigmatic composer, revealing a figure more seminal and revolutionary than previously thought.
Customer Reviews:
Too Concise, Dry and Dull.......2003-10-20
This is unfortunately, a 'too' concise biography of Debussy which never really gives a sense of what the man was like, or the impact of his music on the twentieth century. A disappointment after a good experience with another book in the Cambridge music series.
too short for such a major musical figure.......2001-01-14
It is unfortunate that there is not more available on Debussy in English. This book, at only 167 pages (including pictures) hardly does him justice. Because it is so short, the book jumps from topic to topic at an alarming pace, hardly giving any details. The author's convoluted writing style does not help matters either. Unlike many other musical (or otherwise) biographies I've read, this one did not leave me satisfied. Hopefully the out-of-print book department will have something more complete on Debussy.
Depressed Composer.......2000-06-30
C. Debussy seems to have led a tortured and beleaguered life. His ideas regarding music were in conflict with the French music establishment. This created problems for him both professionally and personally. Financially, he struggled all of his life. Coming from rather humble beginnings, C. Debussy had a particular vision of music early in his career. He was blunt and identified with the impressionistic painters as well as the symbolist poets. These artists were to become popular much later. Debussy died young at the age of 55 of cancer. This biography is a little choppy in it writing style, but it does offer many examples of his ideas on many subjects.

Customer Reviews:
Great cards!.......2007-08-24
I do not feel that you need the video (though we do have it) to get the full use of these cards. I have never once used them at the same time as the video, though I believe they do get reinforced while watching it. I have been using them with our daughter since she was
<1yo. She is now 18 months and can say every one on there (either by name or sound, depending on what I have taught her). Additionally, I can scatter them in a pile, and she can pick out the ones I call to her. When I say, "Let's do cards.", she goes running to them right away. We really like them. The cards are colorful, very sturdy and a great development tool in my opinion.
Real-life images of stuffed animals.......2007-07-28
First, let me say that my child is a big fan of the Baby Einstein dvds. They do have educational value and are generally well done. The description of the flash cards includes the following "Each beautifully illustrated card features real-life images...". What about 50% of the cards featured were "real-life images" of stuffed animals. I expected a photo of a cow, pig, rooster, etc. There were photos or photo-realistic images of the fruits, but not of the animals. It was like a catalog for the toys used in the videos. I was very disappointed.
Drool Resistant.......2007-05-14
My husband and I purchased these cards for our 9-month old son. We figured the cards would be a learning toy that would entertain him for many months to come. Our baby is really intrigued by the cards - mouthing them and enjoying the brightly colored images on the cards. The cards are printed on heavy laminated stock and have, so far, withstood drool and teething bites.
I can see us inventing many different games with the cards as he gets older. And the back of each card gives you (simple) suggestions of questions to ask your child (example: flower - "Flowers smell nice. Show me how you smell a flower.")
I hesitate to give the cards a 5-Star rating because of two issues. 1. I would prefer the animal images on the cards be actual objects instead of stuffed animals (example: a photo of a real duck would be more educational than a picture of a stuffed animal duck). 2. On the back of every card, it tells which Baby Einstein video the image is first introduced. I am not sure why this info is important...other than it serves to promote their videos. To me, it comes across as an ad and turns me off a bit (but that's just me).
Son Sparkled. Mom Sparkled Too!.......2007-03-18
We love these cards! By we, I mean our entire family. I purchased these for my 18 month old. We already had the video and was delighted with it, and I thought these would be a great extension to further explore other languages. My son absolutely beamed over the pictures, espicially the peas, the dog, and the firetruck. I love that I'm learning with him, and it is easy because the pronunciations are spelled out in a way that is easy to understand. He knows over half of the cards in Spanish by now. Additionally, and unforseen, my eighteen year old and her boyfriend like to hold the cards up and try to pronounce the words in all of the languages: Spanish, French, Russian, German, Hebrew, Japanese. They laugh as they are learning. It is great interaction for all of us!
these cards are a perfect learning tool for toddlers.......2007-02-18
I got these cards because my little girl is still not talking. On the first day I recieved these, her eyes lit up when she saw the bright pictures and she really enjoyed them. I have trouble getting her attention and these cards worked instantly. I think that these cards are a great teaching tool for parents of toddlers. She is well on her way. I would highly recommend these. =)

Customer Reviews:
flashcards would be better.......2005-10-13
I would rather have these in a flashcard format, so that English and Spanish words were written on the back of the card. There needs to be more cards, also, to cover more topics in the book.
Overall, for what the cards are, they serve their intended purpose.
Good for their intended purpose.......2005-06-02
I don't understand why some people don't understand that the Oxford Picture Dictionary and its various accoutrements are intended for helping people learn English. The bilingual editions are for people who want a little extra help by having the words in their native languages in addition to the English words. They might also be useful for an English person learning one of those other languages, but that is not the intended (principal) use.
So, on to these cards. I find them handy to use in the classroom on occasion, to review vocabulary, often in a game-type of environment. The problem, and the reason they only get three stars from me, is that there just aren't enough cards, and they are taken from all oveor the book, so there are just a few cards for any one vocabulary area. This diffusion is a major limitation to these otherwise useful cards.
These aren't for learning Spanish.......2004-07-03
As a learning aid for Spanish, these playing cards should get no stars at all. Although they're sold to accompany The New Oxford Picture Dictionary: English/Spanish, they are set up for people learning English, not Spanish. The cards are divided between picture cards (a picture of a tomato, for example) and cards with the English words for those pictures.

Explains how TV is not all glamour!.......1999-03-27
As a video instructor for high school and adult students, I liked this book because it explains to students the type of work that they may initially have in the news and entertainment television industry. At the same time, the "real world" stories show how successful one can become with hard work and determination.
