This is an extremely fun and informative book. It is easily understood, and great for an Art teacher, as well as teachers of other subjects who wish to incorporate more art into their classrooms. It would also be helpful to parents or homeschooling families.

For those working in the schools and who value the joyful impact of art with children, this book has it all! It is a power-packed manual for professional teachers, aides and anyone needing more guidance to open the creative doors for themsleves and children. You will find the source's guides in the back of the book worth the price alone. The clarity in the text is especially to be appreciated; no "gobbeldy-gook and no nonsense" here! The presentation of ways to incorporate art into total curriculum is one to open our eyes and to value its potential for carrying any other subject matter. Full of ideas for projects with morsels of philosophy about the arts tucked in, it allows teachers to open their own minds and rid themselves of their own "art blocks." I would say no teacher should be without this book. Good for you Marlene Gharbo Linderman! At last a book for us all who love and cherish art in schools.

This is aptly titled as a primer on the Southern Belle and Southern culture. Its very well written, and would be a must for someone from places other than the South who is coming to live among us. Factual, funny, and real. We Southerners, and Southern women in particular are a complicated lot; but fun. Excellent read with understanding and lots of gentle, insightful humor.

OMG!!! I graduated from Duke, so I really can sympathize with you! I had my silver pattern picked out at age 13 (Chantilly by Gorham). None of Yankee friends from Duke can understand why my Grandmother gives me a place setting for each birthday. "Why aren't you getting Prada?" they inquire. How could they ever understand?!? Especially considering that one friend from above the Mason-Dixon did not know about General Robert E. Lee!
Deep, deep South.......2006-10-15
Now you can't come from anywhere more southern than I do...Victoria, Australia..any more south and you'd be at the South Pole! I have dear girlfriends from both Louisiana and Texas and they all declare that I'm a perfect southern belle in my outlook, which some people call old fashioned, and my values. I simply adored this funny book and yes, I do have and use, devilled egg plates, although I had to beg friends to raid their mother's china cabinet to find them. To those people who scorn the refinements of the style of southern women, I must tell them that it's an attitude of kindness, self respect and respect for other people's feelings that show the good breeding needed to qualify as a belle..the parts about the silver patterns just don't apply here in Australia and are taken as just a bit of fun. I've read this funny little book several times now and love it for its tongue in cheek humour and what is basically a lesson in good manners and common sense. ps..not only would I not want to be seen wearing white shoes after labour day, I wouldn't want to be seen wearing white shoes EVER!

I have to say this book is just wonderful. Being from the south, along with my mother, I can't tell you how many times I had to read excerpts from the book to her. I love the explanations on why we use the word 'tacky' , why we have a need for a deviled egg plate, and why it is tacky to use Miracle Whip in your chicken salad. And I learned something new, I beeter pick out my silver pattern, it seems to define what type of lady that you will be. If you have ever wanted to learn about why your southern friends could live off of 'sweet tea' this book explains it!

I loved this book when it came out in 1990 (right?). I see it has been somewhat updated. It contains very helpful, true information. I just wish it wasn't all disguised as humor. Many of my friends didn't like this book because they thought it was making fun of us.

This is the same basic book as, "Why Princess Margaret will never be a Kappa..."
It offers good insight into Southern women/culture in a lighthearted way.
Great for someone moving to the South or a young woman going to college in the South for the first time.

I agree with the above reviewer in that this book is just like the first book. It only changes a couple of things, like adding a few comments about Paris Hilton. I do wish it had been a little more up-to-date but it is still a great read. By the way, my silver pattern is Rose Point!
SAME BOOK--DIFFERENT COVER.......2007-01-03
I THOUGHT I WAS PURCHASING A NEW RELEASE BOOK. IT IS THE SAME BOOK PUBLISHED AS A SOUTHERN BELLE PRIMER OR WHY PRINCESS MARGARET WILL NEVER BE A KAPPA KAPPA GAMMA. THERE ARE A FEW PARAGRAPHS THAT HAVE BEEN CHANGED TO REFLECT PARIS HILTON RATHER THAN PRINCESS MARGARET. THE ORIGINAL BOOK WAS A "5", BUT I AM DISAPPOINTED THAT I SPENT MONEY FOR THE SAME BOOK.

A Gentle Poke in the..........2004-01-21
...sorority. This book is a delightful satire *and* homage to the southern way of life. Yes, the southern way of life described in this book was ofteh stuffy, circumscribed, narrow, and, at times, just plain wrong. But silver patterns, mayo-laden casseroles, and the southern adjectival kiss of death ("She's NICE") are more than worth revisiting.
The audiobook edition is read by Dixie Carter, who does a tremendous job.

This book is the most enjoyable chess stuff I've ever had. Value of any chess book is primarily based on its precise in analysis and variation calculation. This is the case with the under review book. Moreover, Kasparov has injected his brilliant and scarece ingenuity in the lines of the book!

It's quite difficult to add something new to what has been said before by others. Hence I will not talk about the concrete but more about the 'feeling' I got while reading this book:
This is the very best games collection money can buy!
G. Kasparov clearly shows how chess evolved towards a more and more complex system.
GK suggests a lot of alternative/better moves in his annotations and together with his personal remarks, they are quite enriching for one's chess education. The often heard criticism that some variations contain blunders (?!), is irrelevant and not a drawback at all in my view: every reviewer admitted using fritz or a similar engine to even find those 'mistakes', moreover, can any reviewer boast a career like GK (? - until then they'd better listen and try to understand what GK is talking about in stead of losing themselves in some concrete variation with the help of their electronic friends). Obviously, in a real game you cannot be assisted in such a way; so what's the point if you can't find it yourself...
Also human chess isn't about THE right move (99% of us wins games because the opponent made the last blunder), but about beautiful patterns, unbelievable sacrifices, new ideas, etc. Or at least, that's how I see it. I think GK feels the same way; The game cannot be solved - as evidenced by recent computer WCC tournaments.
The history of the game as a process of calcification of the champion, eventually leading to the loss of the WCC title in favor of the new champion (who brings a new way of thinking to the board), is as simple as it is brilliant. I thank GK for showing this evolution!
So easily Five stars! I'm now finishing volume I and can't wait to start with volume II.

Kasparov's Series on World Champions.......2006-11-17
I have enjoyed the whole series of 5 volumes. It is a History of Chess in real world championship play over more than the last century. No one has done a better service to compiling those masterpieces in one place. Vol 1 has many early games that are gems.

I have all of the "My Great Predecessors" books and I love them. I am an 1800 rated player and have studied Morphy, Capablanca, Tal, and Fischer in detail. I think it's important to study the World Champions to improve. To have the greatest chess player of all time review the styles and achievements of the past champions is a real treat. It's interesting to see how chess developed over time and to see how the champions improved the skill levels of all players. There has been alot of drama concerning some of Kasparovs analysis. He used a computer to check his own brain. The endgame analysis is very creative and it's clear that Kasparov is untouchable here. He gives many ideas and always gives his strongest continuation. The positions in the middle game are very sharp and I believe Gary enjoys the challenge as he weeds through the complications with great detail. Some of his solutions are very surprising and I always wonder what the World Champions of the time would have thought. It takes alot of courage to even attempt what Garry has done but I am grateful that he gave it an honest shot. In chess books there are always some errors. These come out over time and people like to throw daggers at the author. I believe when all is said and done the series "My Great Predcessors" will stand as a Great achievement by the Greatest of all time. I highly recommend this series be added to any serious chess players library. It's almost as good as "My best games of chess" by Mikhail Tal. A book I read so much it fell apart!
Different recommendations for different audiences.......2004-10-18
If you are very serious and/or accomplished in your chess, say, rated 2000 (US) or above, stop reading this review and buy every book in the Great Predecessors series.
If you rated between , say, 1400 and 1999, you will have difficulty plugging through the analysis (Kasparov is sparse in giving explanation; rather focusing on giving additional analysis instead of explaining the analysis he already gave) , especially if you expect Kasparov to lead you by the hand through his analysis. He doesn't do that. But even studying the main lines of the games is instructive. Only examining the lines with minimal variations and/or paragraph explanations would also be indicated.
If you are rated between 0 and 1399, or are a casual player, the annotations in this book will be beyond you. Even still, playing over the games, examining only textual annotation (omit all variations, unless very short; 2 or 3 moves) , will be helpful.
As a review of chess history, this is a delightful read for all ages and abilities.
Kasparov's series of books is essentially the history of chess, given through the lives, careers, and games of its greatest players (the world champions) and the best players of the various eras never to have won the world championship. (Tarrasch, Nimzowitsch, Chigorin in this book, for example.)
As chess books go, this is an expensive book. This should be mentioned, and I don't think many other reviewers have mentioned that.
