Artist Photo Reference: Birds.......2003-06-07
I recommend this book to any bird artist or anyone who just likes birds in general. The variety of birds covered is good and the number of photos is excellent! The text is very informative, especially the information on number of tail, and wing feathers.
Book Description
Artists know how difficult it is to find quality photographs of birds to reference for their work. In this follow-up to his successful Artist's Photo Reference: Birds, Bart Rulon comes to artists' aid with more than 600 sharp, high-quality photographs of the birds customers have requested. Readers will turn to this reference for:
*Popular songbirds like sparrows, finches, wrens and robins, as well as other artist favorites like eagles, hummingbirds and swans. Songbirds has more than 50 birds not included in Rulon's first reference.
*5 painting demos that illustrate how successful artists use reference photos to add realism to their work.
*A welcome variety of scenes and positions--birds shown close up, in natural habitat, individually and in groups--to suit artists of many different styles and interests.
As an added bonus, the introduction offers tips on how artists can save money by taking their own photos to expand their reference collection even more!

This is the story of an obsessive and nearly lifelong struggle to find, obtain and hold onto the only luggage a man could ever want. As a footnote, last year, one of the Florida hurricanes ate two pieces of it. I am bereft.
Customer Reviews:
Reading about luggage... huh?.......2007-08-27
Only Stuart Woods could write about, of all things, luggage - and make it a captivating and intriguing story! This is why each new Woods novel is greeted with such anticipation - the man can tell a story, even when the main "characters" are made of leather!
Life Staged by Honey-Colored Leather.......2006-12-02
The pull was quick, into this story of the barren financial beginnings of a current superstar in the world of mystery novels. Empathy was easily engendered in the opening paragraph:
>> ...One morning there appeared in the New York Times a full-page ad for the now-departed Abercrombie & Fitch, introducing its acquisition of a line of Italian luggage called "Whip di Roma." On my lunch hour I wandered across Madison Avenue and was boggled to find a sea of gorgeous honey-colored leather stretching over half a floor, incorporating everything from a shaving kit to a steamer trunk. Alas, I was unable to afford even the shaving kit. I slunk, humbled by my penury, back to...
<<
As Woods linked time flashes, tracking the "Whip" line going dry, he simultaneously linked me into this tangy tale of growing "obsession." Obsession? I see this leathery love affair as a fluky gift from the "Universe." Why condemn it into the spiritless realm of psychological stigmata?
"The next years were spent in luggage wilderness. I never passed a leather shop without entering and casting a quick eye over the stock, hoping to find that somebody else had taken on the Whip line."
Avoid boredom through a hobby which provides something you're sparked to do, even in far away lands? Is not dat guut?
"For the next sixteen years I traveled widely and my cases were welcomed everywhere. Bellmen, stroking the leather, would cry, Beeootiful loggage! (this is an average of the various accents)."
Lines like that littered this journalistic excursion with sensual syntax.
"After a sleepless night the airline phoned: the cases were safe. They arrived later that morning, a little worse for the wear."
Who had the sleepless night? If a whole airline can have one of those, there's a second reason for Woods to own a pilot license and to fly himself in nearly daily dedication to nation-wide appearances signing his novels. The first reason for Woods's pilot license can be found in this prime example of an Amazon Short, which was the perfect length for me to read online, in one sitting, finishing as refreshed as if I'd sipped an iced Coke with healthy fizz, that heavy effervescence that Coca Cola used to have in the 50's.
I believe this story is true. If I hadn't explored Stuart Wood's web site, I might not believe that. Not overdone, Woods's site is stylish, and applies succinct syntax to directly inform who he is, what he's selling, and what he stands for. (See my reviews of PRINCE OF BEVERLY HILLS and RECKLESS ABANDON.)
Another true story is coming soon to Amazon Shorts. Every word, every surprise in COAL & COCA COLA is true. Maybe the reason is the season, for believing truths which may be hard to swallow, until the spirit shines and flavor flashes through.
Coal & Coca-cola
A MAN AND HIS LUGGAGE is as endearingly entertaining as a boy and his baggage might be, trailing twilights through maturity with images of red wagons carting starlight.
May your Amazon Library grow daily with brain spice additions!

Hilarious Perspective Piece.......2006-06-05
This is certainly worth $0.49, and since you can't buy it anywhere else (to my knowledge), you should just go for it. It is a different style from his mystery books, but it is very funny. I do think some of the other reviewers are overestimating its honesty and underestimating its comedy. This itself is a testament to the excellent dry humor.
Humor, truth delivered with punch.......2006-04-30
I just fell in love with Amazon shorts after reading A Man and His Luggage. It is a narration of how a little obsession can transoform ones life, creep into it and rule one. Here is something you want to read and reread for the humor and the wisdom. I am hooked.
Living up to our possessions.......2006-04-29
Ever see that special something that you just had to have? Then once you have it you must raise your standards to the level that your possession now requires of you? Well for Mr. Woods it was luggage, and the trials and tribulations of acquiring it, then living up to its standard provide a humorous interlude well worth the read. I am waiting to see his luggage make an appearance in the home of Stone Barrington.

Great Noir Shots.......2007-09-06
The book has an excellent selection of art from the Noir period. I love every single page better than the last!
Noir of Noir.......2007-06-18
If you must have any book of movie posters, this is it. Even the price is great. Almost 300 pages in this overlarge book with hundreds of artwork. Can't beat it. On a side note, I wondered why German Expressionism is not mentioned in the book since film noir undoubtedly has roots from this movement. In the directors chapter, where is John Huston? He directed "The Maltese Falcon" that started it all, and widened the influence of the landscape with "The Asphalt Jungle." For the writers section, where is Billy Wilder? If the remake "The Killers" can be submitted in the book, then why not "Chinatown"? No poster of "Citizen Kane". Regardless, the book is excellent.
Stunning Showcase of the Poster Art of Classic Film Noir. .......2006-11-14
"The Art of Noir" is a big, beautiful book of 338 posters and lobby cards for crime films 1940-1960, plus a handful of later films. All the film noir greats are here, from A-list films to Poverty Row, though not every film represented is strictly "noir". "The Art of Noir" is 14 1/4" x 10 1/8" -too big even for oversized book shelves- but the results are stunning: Hundreds of full-page posters in bold, eye-popping color, along with a handful of 2-page spreads and some 2-to-a-page layouts. I could not overstate how great these posters look, and author Eddie Muller has made them more fascinating with informative captions and short essays. Each poster is captioned with the film's title, year, and studio, the size of the original poster, a brief analysis of the poster's style, and a little about the film.
The posters are divided into six chapters, each with an introduction by Muller. Chapter 1 introduces us to the distinctive styles of different Hollywood studios. Chapter 2 takes us on a tour of film noir poster art around the world, with examples and explanations of how artists abroad altered or redesigned the posters for their markets. Chapter 3 focuses on thematic and iconographic elements in the posters. The icons are guns, racy women, and automobiles. The themes include bad cops, private eyes, and femmes fatales, among others. Chapter 4 showcases posters that feature the prominent stars of film noir, 9 actors and 9 actresses, with an introductory essay for each. The art of Chapter 6 is organized by writer -not only the famed Hammett, Chandler, and Cain, but also prominent noir screenwriters. Chapter 6 features the films of prominent noir directors and cinematographer John Alton.
American and international posters are featured throughout the book. I had not seen foreign film noir posters before, and scrutinizing the posters and comparing the styles turned out to be a source of nearly endless fascination. Foreign artists departed from the bold color and lurid poses of American posters but created art from their own culture's perspective that is no less striking. "The Art of Noir" will absorb fans of film noir or poster art for hours. I am reviewing the hardback edition of the book, so I cannot comment on the reproduction quality in the paperback edition. But the color and sharpness in the hardback are excellent, on slick, white paper. This is Eddie Muller's best book yet.
A Gem of the Field.......2003-10-09
Film noir is a fascinating field with a deserved faithful and ever widening audience. Eddie Muller scored impressively with "Dark City Dames," a study of the women of film noir with intimate portraits of such notables as Jane Greer, Marie Windsor and Ann Savage.
Muller returns to a familiar theme here and achieves mightily in two respects, with glossy pictures which practically jump off the page at you, giving one a feel for time and place, as well as being a part of the scene, along with a text providing valuable information on the memorable films being showcased.
San Franciscan Muller is one of the genuine authorities of the genre. He has a real feel for the world of darkness beset by flashing neon lights, smoke-filled bars, detectives in trench coats, and dangerous women.
The 'Noirhead''s coffee-table essential.......2003-04-16
A feast for the eyes! Gorgeous NOIR poster repros and interesting factoids highlight this weighty tome. Fans will swoon, and the casual viewer will have his/her interest tweaked. As a NOIR poster/lobby card collector, this book is an essential library addition, because I need to occasionally check out pictures of posters I'll sadly never be able to afford(!)
Book Description
Spanning 40 years, The Beatles Literary Anthology compiles accounts of the Beatles by mainstream reporters, rock journalists, cultural commentators, acquaintances, and friends, including Greil Marcus and Geroge Melly. This extensive collection recounts the group’s rise from the Merseybeat music scene; the British invasion that made them icons in the U.S.; their experimentation with song structure and sound-recording technique that redefined pop music; their embracing of psychedelic drugs and pacifism; and the separate paths band members followed after their acrimonious breakup. The Beatles’ influence on the baby boom generation is also acknowledged in essays by writers on both sides of the pop-culture divide. Conveying the excitement of youth culture during the great social changes of the 1960s, the writers underscore the extremes of a career virtually unparalleled in mass-media history.

ANTHOLOGY OF THE LITERARY KIND.......2005-11-22
Before the Beatles, anthologies such as this were usually reserved for Dickens,Sherlock Holmes or Shakespeare.
Now we have one for the Beatles-which was followed by a seperate one for Lennon-and its one of these kind of books where you can dip in anywhere.
Interesting to read what the critics in Philadelphia thought of the new English group
This Gets a Rave Review, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah!.......2005-03-12
This is a book of extraordinarily high caliber. Like the Beatle book by Mojo, this one includes a myriad of magazine articles spanning the Beatles' careers as well as musical analyses, comprehensive biographies and analytical dissections of each Beatle.
One drawback the book has are some inaccuracies, e.g. that George Harrison did not contribute in a musically significant way until 1969 with the release of the Abbey Road album. That just isn't true. George Harrison was a gifted guitarist and extraordinary lyricist who had been writing songs for years prior to 1969! Just LISTEN to the 1966 stellar gem "Revolver" which has 3 songs by George Harrison. The intensity of his lyrics and his unique guitar playing helped define the Beatles as the extraordinary band that they were. Suggesting otherwise is counterproductive.
On the plus side, this book digs quite deeply into history and provides fascinating accounts of the inception of the Beatles; Pete Best's dismissal from the group in 1962 and his replacement Ringo Starr; personal accounts from Best himself; Beatle manager Brian Epstein's first encounter with the boys in 1961.
Each Beatle and the influences that helped shape and guide him down his individual Long & Winding Road are discussed in depth; their philosphies; political ideologies and core values and beliefs are explored as well.
If you are on a quest for buried treasure, you will find plenty of it in this book. You will uncover anecdotes about Beatle conventions; Murray the K, a New York disc jockey who followed the Beatles around during their first trip to America in 1964; his views on John's wife Yoko in later years; John's and George's tragic and untimely demise as well.
Even with the death of two Beatles (at the time of this review), the book does an excellent job of portraying their staying power and how they continue to influence music and other art media.
All in all, a solid job. I highly recommend this one, yeah, yeah, yeah!
Essential to any Beatles library.......2004-10-08
Obviously this book should be picked up by any hardcore Beatles fan, but it might be even more essential if you're just a casual Beatlemaniac. Why? Because it contains excerpts from the vast volume of writing on the Fab 4 which you'll probably just dip a toe in otherwise. This anthology compiles magazine articles, both contemporary and retrospective, excerpts from biographies and autobiographies, analysis of music, "I was there" recollections, and dissections of the Beatles as a cultural phenomenon. The last category is often the weakest, since it tends to combines pompous extrapolation with incorrect "facts" and worthless repetition of conventional wisdom, i.e. that George Harrison didn't write any worthy songs till Abbey Road. Yeah, right: even leaving aside his love 'em/hate 'em Indian experiments, the White Album contains gems like the underrated & chilling Long, Long, Long and the widely acknowledged masterpiece While My Guitar Gently Weeps.
But that's a minor quibble, and the book is full of buried treasures, too many to mention. I'll focus on the cream of the crop here. Culled from original drummer Pete Best's autobiography, we hear the tale of how Best got sacked for Ringo, this time from the horse's mouth (including an interesting anecdote about Best and manager Brian Epstein). Epstein himself has an entry, a truly fascinating account of discovering the Beatles in a sweaty Cavern performance. Then there's an eyewitness account of the Elvis-Beatles meeting which, contrary to press releases of the time, did not go well. Primarily due to Lennon's acerbic mouth.
Speaking of John, we get to see how far left he swung after expressing doubt about politics in "Revolution": in an interview with British radicals, he pledges admiration for Chairman Mao and is brimming with angry Marxist rhetoric. A quote included in this section brings him down to earth by describing the room full of air-conditioned fur coats he and Yoko kept around this time that they were attacking capitalists. Future feminist Gloria Steinem submits a circa '64 interview with John Lennon which spends more time painting a vivid picture of the Beatles' chaotic stage show and backstage milieu than talking to the "sarcastic Beatle." A Q&A with George Harrison expresses his spiritual views, and the best interviews in the book are taken from Playboy, including one with all the Beatles in '65 in which they come off as surprisingly frank and honest. They describe themselves as agnostics and freely discuss topics ranging from sex to religion. Also included is Maureen Cleave's 1966 portrait of Lennon which caused all the controversy by quoting his thoughts on Jesus.
And though I've already criticized a lot of the Beatles punditry, there are exceptions: mainly stuff written at the time, before the Beatles legend was set in stone. Pieces by Paul Johnson and John Gabree debunk the Beatles as musicians and pop icons, Gabree a tad more effectively than Johnson, whose arrogant vitriol is truly shocking. Also critical is William F. Buckley, condemning what he sees as the Maharishi's vapidity and scolding the group for not looking in their own backyard, accusing them of being ignorant of Christianity and Western thought. Pauline Kael is observant as always in her review of Yellow Submarine, and excerpts from the diaries of Andy Warhol and Noel Coward reveal their take on the pop phenomenon.
Chances are you'll find whatever it is you're looking for in this book. Starting with the Beatles' roots in working-class postwar England and the art schools of the 50's, through their gigs in Hamburg and the Cavern Club, into the first outside analysis that greeted the early singles and albums, past first-hand accounts of Beatlemania at the height of its madness (it's astounding nobody died in the frenzy), the recording of Rubber Soul, the first evidence of backlash against the Beatles' popularity, lots of cultural commentary on Sgt. Pepper, into the dissolution of the band. And all kinds of cultural phenomena surrounding the group are put under the microscope too. Swingin' London, the Maharishi, Charles Manson, the rock renaissance of the 60's, even the bootlegs of the 70's and the spoof group "The Rutles" are touched upon. One of the most entertaining sections details a rabid Beatles convention, in which publicity-hound DJ Murray the K puts in his 2 cents on Yoko. Near the end of the book, there's quite a bit of ink spilled on the murder of John Lennon and the quieter death of George Harrison and, you know, the dream is over.
Quite a stocking stuffer.

Book Description
So much has been written about the most famous and successful band of all time and yet one story has not been told - the band's own story. Spanning their early lives, their rise to pre-eminence, and a year-by-year account of the golden period of fame right through to the break-up in 1970, THE BEATLES ANTHOLOGY is the Beatles' own book. To the never-before-disclosed recollections of Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr are added the memories of associates such as road manager Neil Aspinall, producer George Martin and spokesman Derek Taylor. Interwoven with these are the recollections of John Lennon, and almost all of these have never been published before. Add to this the astonishing collection of over 1,000 photographs drawn from the Apple Corps archive and The Beatles' own personal collections and you have a truly unique book. Created with their full co-operation, THE BEATLES ANTHOLOGY is nothing less than The Beatles autobiography.

Edited by Robert Cording, Shelli Jankowski-Smith, and E. J. Miller Laino A new paperback edition that celebrates the Fab Four with stories, poems, and essays.
Customer Reviews:
This is a great book with many graet moments.......1999-03-16
This ia a book of many poems, short stories, essays and more. It is solely about how the fab-four affected many peoples lives. It was done very well and has many great authors, such as marcus allen in it. When I read this book it really made me think of when I was a teenager and how I felt about the beatles. This editors in this book did a wonderful job with it. Many of these great clips of writing are about how children were alowed to stay up that memorable night, when the Beatles were on the Ed Sullivan Show. Others tell about how they actually got to meet and talk to their favorite Beatle. One Story tells of a young girl who goes to John's house and meets him. All she does is say hi to him but he answers rudely and she is embarrased. If you can read this wonderful book.
Only fitfully interesting.......1998-10-30
This book was edited by editors with VERY literary credentials. And that is one of the things that is wrong with this book. It has a bunch of poems about the Beatles, a bunch of short stories about the Beatles (actually, the Beatles are only peripherally a part of most of the fiction), so there is too much that is dryly academic in this book. And then the first-person pieces are mostly fans' memoirs, that any Beatles fan could write. Having said that, I gave the book three stars instead of one or two, mainly because of a fascinating piece "The Beatles in Tonypandy." That what happens in this piece seems rather improbable, is what makes it so entertaining. The Beatles in the mid-sixties went and stayed with a pigeon expert in the South of Wales for about six days. This town of Tonypandy was so remote, no one recognized the Beatles, and they could go about as they wanted. I don't want to tell the rather odd things that happened during these six days, because I think it will spoil it for you. But it is a fascinating piece. Whether it's worth the price of the book, I don't know, because I checked mine out of the library. But it is great piece to read for any Beatles fan. The other piece that is interesting in parts is "Sod Manila!" which includes the article's author witnessing a conversation between the Beatles in their hotel room in the Phillipines, when the country was ready to tear them apart for snubbing the Marcoses. The other pieces (except for a few so-so ones) are ones a flipped quickly through. So, except for the two gems, this is a dry affair.
