Not as complete as I would have liked..........2006-08-23
The Science Behind The Fiction: Building Sci-Fi Moviescapes is a good behind the scenes look at how the cities and landscapes of futuristic movies have been designed, from Blade Runner in 1982 to Innocence: Ghost In The Shell II made in 2004. I truly enjoyed the book, but some chapters, such as the one on Appleseed barely touched on the movie while other chapters, like the one on Immortel seemed to go on for pages without really saying anything.
And why have Ghost In The Shell II but not the first Ghost In The Shell? And why start at 1982? Why not start earlier? The book was good but could be better.

An excellent introduction to the Ruskin way of seeing .......2005-02-01
This book opens with a short biography of Ruskin, without going into in detail the difficulties of his life. It focuses on his way of seeing things, his path in perception in Art and Social Criticism. Landow claims that Ruskin thought by seeing and in this seeing also saw the symbolical and mythological meanings he valued in Art. Landow discusses Ruskin's championing and promoting of the work of J.M. Turner. He often cites that complicated Ruskin prose style which supposedly influenced among others Proust. He outlines Ruskin's social thought, his concern for the poor and presents Ruskin's unique conception of economics. For Ruskin wealth was not measured in money or possessions but ' fullness of life'. And Ruskin believed the great deprivation and social evil was not simply in material poverty but in loss of opportunity for cultural and spiritual enrichment. Ruskin is a visionary of Art and Social Reality, who saw both with the eyes of Tradition and with his own radical ideals of how to better reconstruct the world. Landow also indicates the very great influence of Ruskin in Victorian thought. As one who does not know Ruskin's work that well I felt this work gave me a clear idea of the main purpose and direction of a major nineteenth - century creative visionary.

Book Description
Meet Mike Greenberg, the popular host of ESPN Radio’s Mike and Mike in the Morning, the highest-rated drive-time sports talk show on the dial. To his three-million-plus listeners, Greeny is the guy who’s equally as comfortable dissecting zone defenses as he is discussing cashmere sweaters. He’s been to Super Bowls and World Series, All-Star Games and Final Fours. He’s interviewed Michael Jordan, Joe Montana, and Wayne Gretzky. He gets paid to enthuse about sports, which means he’s the envy of most men in America.
This is the hilarious, sometimes touching, and endlessly entertaining debut of one of America’s fastest-rising sportscasters, a wry and revealing look at one man’s good-hearted but mistake-prone attempt to grow up before his children do. Marriage, fatherhood, manhood, fame, athletes, crazed aunts with gambling problems, the true significance of sports, the worst possible thing to say in a room full of pregnant women–no topic is beyond his reach. But don’t take our word on it, read what Greeny has to say about:
• Dating: “People who reminisce fondly about dating are blocking out all the disasters and focusing only on the few great nights. If that is all you choose to remember, fine. But be aware that no experience is without good moments. I’m sure during the sacking of Rome there were a few decent nights; maybe they put on a play.”
• Life on the road:
“Wife + television = no sleep.”
“No wife + no television = no sleep.”
“Wife + no television = sleep.”
“No wife + television = porn.”
• Keeping things in perspective: “Never assume you know more than the guy in the camouflage tux.”
• And, of course, marriage: “All of us are married to women who think we’re idiots.”
Whether he’s talking trash on the radio or talking dirty diapers over a fancy dinner, Greeny’s determined to reconcile two halves of a whole. So if your enthusiasm has ever been curbed, or you’re feeling remote without the remote, or you’re just wondering what exactly goes on in a guy’s brain, Why My Wife Thinks I’m an Idiot will be a source of comfort and unadulterated laughter.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent book even for non sports fans!.......2007-07-23
I bought this book for my nonreader husband. He loved it and quoted from it so much that I had to read it for myself. Mike is fun, lighthearted, and says everything that everyone else is thinking, but never say. He is refreshingly honest. We couldn't put the book down. This is a must read for newly weds, new parents, sports fans, or any woman who thinks her husband is an idiot!
Awesome book, can't wait to see him milk the cow.......2007-05-04
This book was excellent. I acctually bought it on kind of an impulse buy, but when I got it I couldn't put it down. Finished it in about 2 days. Never gets boring. Inspirational for someone like me who wants to go into sports broadcasting. The stories where he talks about meeting starts such as Michael Jordan will leave you in awe and you can acctually relate to his everyday stories with his family(just funny as hell). One of the best books I've read in a while. His personality on his radio show matches exactly to what is in the book and if you love sports and lots of stories, you'll love this book.
Quick read, faily interesting.......2007-04-26
I've listened to Mike and Mike a lot over the past few years and very much enjoy their program. This book is a quick little insight into the life of Greeny and the format make the book a very quick read (I completed the whole thing on a round trip flight from Hartford, CT to Washington, D.C.). I think the overriding theme of dealing with being a minor celebrity and what it took to get to that point made it quite interesting and in the end I would recommend it for anyone looking for a pseudo-sports book without getting into a lot of technical aspects.
Work Versus Family.......2007-04-12
This humorous autobiography tells about one sportscaster's quest to balance work with his family life. If you don't mind foul language, this book will entertain you.
Reads Like Paul Reiser's Books.......2007-03-19
Mike Greenberg mines the same material as Paul Reiser did back in the "Mad About You" heyday. Greenberg might be a sportscaster, but this book is really about the battle of the sexes, and the difficulty in combining work and family. What makes it a little hard to believe is that Greenberg and his wife are both loaded financially, and actually have a live-in nanny.
Still, the writing is crisp, and Greenberg's voice comes through loud and clear. You won't find as many sports anecdotes as you might be hoping for, but the book is entertaining.

So, you want to write a movie. You could do worse than read The Big Deal, a collection of funny, horrible, and/or inspiring stories of Hollywood break-ins by former Oliver Stone employee Thom Taylor.
What's most striking about the book is the madly random nature of films' gestations. Allison Anders got her break (and off welfare) via the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' Nicholl Fellowship (one of several competitions Taylor recommends). Total Recall was optioned for $1,000 16 years before it got made. The Elephant Man script got to its producer because the coauthor's girlfriend baby-sat for him. Alien only got made because Steven Spielberg liked it.
Andrew Kevin Walker, the Tower Records clerk who wrote Seven, wrote a letter to then barely known screenwriter David Koepp (Bad Influence), who improbably hooked him up with a deal that collapsed partly because the studio's co-owner was distracted by becoming the president of Italy. Various moguls rejected and almost destroyed the story; Brad Pitt saved it, and it grossed $340 million. Dustin Hoffman cleverly added the hero's guilt over failing to save JFK to In the Line of Fire, then exited; Tom Cruise's people demanded this be deleted, because a 28-year-old hero wouldn't have been around for JFK. The dead-broke writer spurned about $100,000 from Cruise, and just when he would've settled for Bob Denver, wound up with Clint Eastwood and about $1 million.
"If Hollywood scoured the earth looking for the world's top furniture designers," Taylor writes, the studios "would bring them all to Los Angeles to design $6 plastic chairs to sell at the local Wal-Mart." But it's the only Hollywood we've got, and Taylor has got its number. --Tim Appelo

Customer Reviews:
Tired of reading negative books on screenwriting?.......2001-09-08
As a person who always puts her fears in front of dreams, I seem to always get stuck reading books on the subject of writing that are demeaning meanderings of successful people preaching how difficult it is to 'break into the field', how dedication is only matched by how much rejection one can handle. A dog chasing it's tail in a downward spin. Have you ever felt that way? There's no doubt that whatever is worth pursuing to a person most often times comes with the hard-knocks of gained experience. Granted.
I originally picked this book up from the library, then decided to purchase it due to all the incredible information, examples, and inspirational stories of those who DID succeed beyond their own expectations (and also those in the business who had originally brushed their scripts & ideas beside). The examples Thom Taylor sites are full of details, giving the whole story, instead of brief glimpses into their successes. Therefore, I find this book to be absolutely inspiring, and if inspiration is what you need, please read this.
There are plenty of books, websites, etc. that tell you how to format a script, what NOT to include in a screenplay, what sells, what doesn't, how to find an agent, how to submit a script...and just as essential it is to read those books, give yourself a break from thinking "it could never happen for ME"...because when you really think about it, it HAS to happen for someone, why not you?
Luck of the draw certainly comes into play in the script business, but this book helps put into perspective that only one person who reads your script can actually make a difference in your life. And THAT is what keeps me writing.
A must read for aspiring feature screenwriters.......2001-04-07
This book was recommened to me by two working pros in the industry. Taught me a lot, too, but as I've decided I want more creative control, I am moving to writing novels.
Book covers several hot scripts which later became successful movies . . . WHILE YOU WERE SLEEPING, SEVEN, THE PLAYER, IN THE LINE OF FIRE, THE LAST ACTION HERO and WATERWORLD . . . each came in to the hands of powerful Hollywood people by different routes.
More importantly, readers get the opinions of inside screenwriters and producers about marketable scripts. Something you almost will never find in the basic novels on screenwriting by Syd Field or Michael Hague.
Get it, read it and, if you still want to do it, go to WORDPLAYER.COM, which is run by two working pros who graciously give out their information for free. Things you wouldn't know unless you knew writers in the industry or started working in it for several years.
Good luck!
Loved It!.......2001-03-08
My friend gave me this book as a gift, and I can't thank her enough. This book was like an adrenaline rush. The way Taylor weaves his behind-the-scenes tales held me for every page. Taylor inspires writers to press on with their craft, and paints an intriguing picture of the script sale world. For screenwriters looking for a great book that goes beyond the usual How To information, you have found it.
The Inside Edge.......2000-10-17
Thom has the access that only industry insiders have, and he openly shares it with the readers of his book. This access got him interviews with REAL players in the biz, who disclosed invaluable insights that outsiders would not have been privy to.
The reader is shown the odds against getting a script produced, and ALSO the potentially wonderful rewards of winning the "spec script lottery." Subjects include the role of agents, and the horrors of "development hell."
There's even a chart detailing the successful efforts of superstar and lesser-known screenwriters who prevailed with their spec scripts, and how much they were remunerated for efforts that did NOT result in produced works.
For less than what the average tank of gas costs, readers are provided a thorough and enjoyable education - WITHOUT having to move to Los Angeles!
The Truth About Hollywood is..........2000-04-28
The book is fresh. Up front and honestly Thom states this book is not about writing a screenplay. There are other books on how to do that. I'm a first time writer/director of my own short feature. I'm raising my own capital and Hollywood can look or not. Thom's insights certainly speak truthfully and can set the uniformed, disillousioned reader on the right path. Remember people, this is a "business." Business is war, so arm yourself accordingly. Read everything you can get, form your own opinion and then write true to your self.

High quality as always.......2006-03-19
The NY Times acrostics are always challenging, which I love. If you are new to acrostics, or just want some that are a little more "mindless", then I suggest the Mensa acrostics book, they are much easier.
Several significant typos, but still rewarding.......2006-03-11
I've completed 26 books of this type (Acrostic, Acrostix, Crostic, Crostix ...), and in the others, typos were rare and insignificant -- they were in the clues. This book has several instances of mislabeled letters, a few cases where "(two words)" was missing, and one case where "(two words)" was on a one-word answer but missing from a nearby two-word answer. I was still able to solve the puzzles, however, and I enjoyed them.
