I love this book! I may buy more for friends. It arrived on time in excellent condition.
Kliban captures the both the wisdom and mischief of cats.......2006-06-16
Alas, Bernard "Hap" Kliban is gone, but his genius lives on in "Cat", a book of cartoons that captures the personality of the cat as seen by cat lovers. Strangely enough, Kliban was a cartoonist for "Playboy", contributing cartoons for that publication until his death. The cat cartoons were discovered by a "Playboy" editor and the 1975 book "Cat" was born.
Kliban's cats are rotund bug-eyed creatures with a smile on their faces that says the joke is on you. The cartoons include the cats doing nonsensical things as well as performing deeds that you always suspected they might be guilty of as they interact with dogs, mice, people, and in some cases impersonate people. Included among the cartoons is a cat playing a banjo singing a tune of his own making with the lyrics "Love to eat them mousies. Mousie's what I love to eat...". For those that can remember the days when a television was a heat emanating device that invariably attracted napping cats there is a cartoon of a couple sitting in front of a television with a transparent cat standing in front of the screen. Their comments: "We enjoy the television set now that we got ourselves a transparent cat!". Interspersed among the "Kliban cats" are truly beautiful and elegant drawings of Kliban's own real-life cats, to whom he dedicated this book.
If you enjoyed Gary Larson's "Far Side" series and you are a cat lover I'm sure you'll enjoy this book. I highly recommend it.

ENGAGEMENT CALENDAR
"Get ready for a year of Cat gluttony and sloth, mayhem and misadventure, and--as always--a fine disregard for the law. (Laws governing physics and animal behavior come in for especially vigorous abuse from these feckless felines, as well as the law Thou Shalt Not Swipe Thy Neighbor's Sushi and that other law, Don't Juggle With Kittens.) ¶ Now in their third decade of worldwide popularity, the Cats show not the slightest sign of starting to behave like adults. Or like small-c cats, either. They will do whatever it takes to send you through 2006 with a smile on your face. Even if it means hugging a big, smug fish. Even if it means taking a bath. Even if it means missing a meal. Well, perhaps not that last one. ¶ 112 page, spiral-bound weekly engagement calendar with 53 reproductions, and clear plastic covers. Size: 6 5/8 by 8". Calendar features 53 weekly grids and full-page 2006 and 2007 yearly grids. Includes international holidays and a page for notes. ISBN 0-7649-3049-4 . . . Other calendars: wall, mini-wall, and 365-day. Additional publications available in our Kliban Gallery."--© Pomegranate
WALL CALENDAR
"The debauch continues. Cats have a go at Abstract Expressionism (and simultaneous inadvertent body art), feed a wild variety of birds from a park bench with nary a thought to their own nominally predatory nature, doze in the soporific vapors of a plate of pasta, and pop furtively and in sizeable numbers from the tall grass at the rustle of a sandwich being unwrapped. Other hi- and low-jinx take place as well. ¶ 13 x 12" wall calendar (opens to 13 x 24") with twelve full-color reproductions. ISBN: 0-7649-3053-2 . . . Other calendars: weekly engagement, mini-wall, and 365-day.Related items available in Kliban Cat Gallery."--© Pomegranate
mousie dung.......2003-06-14
This book is my absolute favorite, I have recently decided. My B. Kliban legacy goes back, way back, to my grandmother (we call her "Darling") who fell in love with the Qats back in the seventies (now keep in mind this is not some frumpy old lady. At the time she was the coolest little activist hippie this side of South Street.) Then there's my mother, who, out in San Fransisco around the same time used to roll with laughter at the Cat cartoons with her zany friend.
Enter me. As a kid, I never really understood Kliban--I also didn't have a cat yet. Then I did--first came Serena, then Zubi, and finally Torquil Hevoir James (AKA Booboo Kitty.) And so I loved B. Kliban. And this book is the most hilarious thing I've ever seen. Now that I'm going off to college, I think I'll frame some pages for my dorm room. And place them randomly around the campus. Most people I know who don't have cats really don't get it, but that's okay. I mean, the drawings are beautiful and whacky enough to get anyone. And the concepts--what was this guy on? Catnip, I believe. Whatever the inspiration, Cat is definitely the besties and the greaties.
P.S. I don't actually have this particular edition of the book; I didn't even know it was still in print. I have Darling's hardcover copy from 1976, and I love the cover: "Cat" in huge red letters with two of Kliban's pen-and-ink cats looking at it from below. Beautiful, beautiful.
Twenty-seven Years and Still Purring.......2001-11-23
I bought this book by accident. Well, not really, but I allowed another reviewer to seduce me into buying the new Kliban Cat Calendar and I saw this book listed as well on the calendar's detail page. I saw the words 'anniversary edition' and decided to order it. It was only after I received it that I discovered that seventeenth anniversary of "Cat" was in 1992, two years after Kliban's death. So 2002 is really the 27th anniversary. All that being said, I want to state that this little book would be fantastic no matter what it's age is, or what the age of it's reader is either. I love this book.
There, I've said it, this crusty old man goes all soft hearted when he leafs through a 25 year old book of cat cartoons. As well he should! Kliban captures something entirely different from other feline cartoonists. They aren't kitten cute, nor are they wicked Garfields, as Art Spiegelman points out in his introduction. Instead they are the light hearted chubby denizens of a world of whimsical, good natured self-interest. They relax at the beach, dream of the stars, and steal cheese sandwiched with equal aplomb. They exchange traditional concepts of cat beauty for an enticing comfyness which only a cat lover could understand.
Love is an important and operative word in this little volume. Not one of Kliban's cartoons is made at the expense of cats. Instead, each opens a door to the essential nature of our furry friends, and the non-judgmental affection that they display to those in their circle of trust. A snarl turns into a lick, a meow into a purr and then all is well. Kliban is the only artist I know who has managed to really capture the feline Mona Lisa smile. You know, the one that cats use to melt their owners. Cats forgive with a grace from which us humans could learn a great deal. And Kliban captures it all. Many of the cartoons are not really cartoons, but innocent studies of the artists own cats, drawn with genuine affection.
Art Spiegelmann, artist and author of MAUS, provides a short and delightful introduction to the anniversary edition, and there are 16 pages of Kliban's color work for our further delectation. Everyone who likes cats needs to have this book around. Placed somewhere so that it will fall to hand in those irritating moments when we need to look at cats in order to remember what it is to be human.

About This Book.......2005-10-19
Retrospective collection of the artist/photographer's lifework. Limited Edition of 2000 copies. An elegant production by Chris Pichler: Regular-sized volume format. Handsome pale gray silk cloth boards with dark gray titles embossed on cover and spine, as issued. Black-and-white photographic reproduction pasted on the cover's recessed center. Photographs and Preface by Jerry Uelsmann. Essay, "Book of Revelations", by Bill Jay. Printed on Japanese semi-glossy stock paper to the very highest standards: The crispness, warmth and rich tonal details of each photograph have to be seen to be believed. Without DJ, as issued. Presents some of the artist/photographer's finest and most representative images, taken over a forty-year period. A student of Minor White, Jerry Uelsmann's lifelong fascination with creating images that are dark and disturbing yet mystical and awe-inspiring began when he was asked to photograph doorways of "ominous portent". Uelsmann personally selected these potent, dream-like images, each of which is a metaphor for "those dark and evocative images that emerge from just beyond the threshold of conscious understanding". Most of them have never been published. As a collection, they offer new insight to Uelsmann's vision. The only other American artist/photographer who has embarked on a similar journey is Arthur Tress, and it is a tribute to both artists that despite a shared Surrealist vocabulary, their works are quite different from each other in striking ways. Bill Jay's Reminiscence/Essay vividly recalls the great stir Uelsmann's images created when they were introduced in the United Kingdom in the late 1960's. "Many of these images are enigmatic and provocative. Over the years, they have continued to engage me in a poetic, meditative and mysterious dialogue. They are an important part of my visual quest" (Jerry Uelsmann). © 2006, ModernRare.com

Book Description
This caustically funny Webster’s of the workplace cuts to the true meaning of the inane argot spouted in cubicles and conference rooms across the land.
At a price even an intern can afford and in a handy paperback format that won’t weigh down your messenger bag or briefcase,
The Dictionary of Corporate Bullshit is a hilarious guide to the smoke-screen terms and passive-aggressive phrases we traffic in every day. Each entry begins with a straight definition followed by a series of alternative meanings that are, of course, what is really meant.
Take, for example, the widely used, seemingly innocuous term brainstorming:
1. to generate ideas as a group in an accepting environment and in a free-form manner
2. a supposedly relaxed forum in which no idea is a bad idea – that is, until you generate a bad idea and are met with uncomfortable silence/looks that suggest you are retarded or really uncool/the feeling that you are about to be fired
Beyond deciphering corporate commonplaces, you’ll learn the PC term for secret Santa (Holiday Harry); why the Blackberry is “most commonly referred to as a ‘Crackberry’ due to its highly addictive nature”; and that when a co-worker says “Have a good night”, they really mean: “this meaningless, seemingly interminable exchange of small talk is now over. I am no longer speaking to you, and will now flee this awkward social situation. Don’t even think of asking which way I’m walking.”
Just remember to read this only at COB (close of business) to avoid being busted (caught idling by your boss).

It's Funny Because It's True.......2007-07-09
If you work in an office, you'll both laugh and cry when reading this book. It could be filed under "humor" if only it weren't such an accurate representation of corporate BS terminology. This is an important anthropological work!
1 part informative, 1 part bs.......2007-01-09
This book contains a lot of funny, simple truths. I got it to get a 'professional' opinion on my office romance and found some pretty funny definitions concerning that, but in the end the best place for this book is in the bathroom :)
A Must for every office!.......2006-05-03
I am thoroughly enjoying these hilarious, yet so true, definitions. It is must for anyone who is planning to work, is working, or is retired wants to reflect on all the BS they had to put up . An excellent gift.. I am sending copies to my two sons who are both involved in the corporate world . enjoy, enjoy
hilarious.......2006-04-05
This book is hilarious. Each entry gets funnier and funnier. It's not simply amusing because you recognize all of the office politics and indignities that lois describes. It's brilliant because she describes the office and corporate b.s. better than you can. In the spirit of 9 to 5, I envision Dolly, Jane and Lilly sitting around, getting high, and reading a copy of the Dictionary of Corporate BS, as they plot the downfall of Mr. Hart.
Corporate Bullshit.......2006-03-21
As the name implies, it was "just plain stupid." Better luck next time Lois!

Customer Reviews:
For SERIOUS Aspiring Screenwriters ONLY.......2006-04-06
If you think of screenwriting as the latest get rich quick scheme, then forget this book and go buy yourself a lotto ticket, at least the odds are better...However, if you are serious about cementing a screenwriting career, then you can't go wrong with this book. True, it's over 400 pages, and at points he does seem to repeat himself BUT the information on structure, character arc, and dramatic conflict in general is priceless. The reason this book seems to turn people off is because it doesn't dumb screenwriting down. Contrary to popular opinion, screenwriting is hard work and the only way to get good is to put the time in to learn it. If you really want to make it, try this book.
Could've been a 1 page pamphlet instead of a book!.......2005-07-26
After reading this long book filled with filler words, nonsense rhetoric and uninspiring stories...I was so ANGRY, I felt there should be a law forcing How-to-book authors to include a chapter that actually synopsis and list what you will actually learn from their books... You can probably sum up what you will learn from this book in 1 to 2 pages.
Over 400 pages to say so little... I learned more about screenplay writing from "First Time Director..." by Gil Bettman than in this book.
Mr. Howard's book reminds me of those horrible college text books written by your college professors that you are forced to read. If Mr. Howard was to tell you how to input a book title on top to search for a book here in Amazon... he would probably take 3 chapters to do it.
By the time I got to page 401, I just had to laugh... He says, "You know you can't be boring for too long, and, ideally, you want to be far from boring; you want your stories to be exciting, riveting, can't-take-your-eyes-away thrilling." - Even that sentence shows how wordy he is. How these books get publish...? I have no idea! Reminds me of people who surround themselves around people who never tell them the truth... cause if he had, I'm sure at least one true friend would've tell him the book has major flaws!
You don't learn much about the author, you learn less about the business. It's almost like he assumes his readers are total idiots. This is sad; because I'm sure Mr. Howard is a great man, with a lot to teach... and his book did not come across that way... could be the editor.
Here's a suggestion, why not try to write the book again... and this time get a psychologist to assist you to stay focus and REALLY speak from the heart? (Not an insult but an actual honest suggestion)
I would buy it, since I believe he might have something great to say, if he only stop talking long enough to get to the heart of things.
About me: Fulltime successful Creative Director and copy writer for some of the top brands in America, trying to get into film.
Good book........2005-07-17
This book covers a lot of info; however, it seems as if some of it could be wittled away and the core of the book would still be intact. Also it seems to reference his other book way to much.
This is THE Screenwriting Book, bar none........2004-11-01
This book is a 2 semester, graduate course in screenplay writing. It is the best in print. To cover so much material in a single book is amazing, and a first. Supplement it with "Advanced Writing" by Wells Draughon, "Writing a Great Movie," by Jeff Kitchen, and "Screenwriting" by Paul Gulino, and you have everything you need to write a superb screenplay. "How to Build a Great Screenplay" can stand on its own. The others will help you control your story to get every bit of energy into making a taut story. But the breadth of Howard's book stands head-and-shoulders above everything else in print. An amazing book. Thank you, David Howard. A superb book!

Chronicles: Volume One (Chronicles)
ASIN: 0195154819 |
Book Description
What do Louis Armstrong, Ray Charles, Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson, Tom Waits, Cassandra Wilson, and Ani DiFranco have in common? In Highway 61 Revisited, acclaimed music critic Gene Santoro says the answer is jazz--not just the musical style, but jazz's distinctive ambiance and attitudes. As legendary bebop rebel Charlie Parker once put it, "If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn." Unwinding that Zen-like statement, Santoro traces how jazz's existential art has infused outstanding musicians in nearly every wing of American popular music--blues, folk, gospel, psychedelic rock, country, bluegrass, soul, funk, hiphop--with its parallel process of self-discovery and artistic creation through musical improvisation. Taking less-traveled paths through the last century of American pop, Highway 61 Revisited maps unexpected musical and cultural links between such apparently disparate figures as Louis Armstrong, Willie Nelson, Bob Dylan and Herbie Hancock; Miles Davis, Lenny Bruce, The Grateful Dead, Bruce Springsteen, and many others. Focusing on jazz's power to connect, Santoro shows how the jazz milieu created a fertile space "where whites and blacks could meet in America on something like equal grounds," and indeed where art and entertainment, politics and poetry, mainstream culture and its subversive offshoots were drawn together in a heady mix whose influence has proved both far-reaching and seemingly inexhaustible. Combining interviews and original research, and marked throughout by Santoro's wide ranging grasp of cultural history, Highway 61 Revisited offers readers a new look at--and a new way of listening to--the many ways jazz has colored the entire range of American popular music in all its dazzling profusion.

Introduction to the built-up ship model.......2002-10-26
Detailed sequential instruction on constructing the built-up ship model. Accurate lists of the various countries' mast rules, including tops, heads, trestletrees etc, and rope & block dimensions, ensure that your model will look like the real thing and not a misproportioned eyesore.
There are lots of hints and tips to making the rigging and the ground tackle (capstans, bitts, winches, anchors) look real, including correct proportions of gunports.
The book does assume that you have an accurate drawing to work from and with this in mind it is a welcome addition to anyone's library. My only complaints are that there should be more detail on planking, and some of the drawings are a tad small, obscuring the detail.
Great Reference Work.......2001-04-18
After initial chapters on varying types of ship models, including the built-up model and wooden-sail models, the author devotes individual chapters to the masting of ships, mastheads, the standing rigging, the running rigging, foot-ropes, the blocks, steering wheels, the ship's galley, pumps, ship ironwork, copper sheathing, the ground tackle, gun ports, boats and davits. He includes as well invaluable tables and lists of data that offer opportunities to compare vital statistics on rigging, masting and more.
Charles C. Davis was a well-known naval architect, shipbuilder, master seaman, racing yachtsman and nautical chronicler. His lifelong love affair with the great ships of the past resulted in several classic works on ships and ship model building. The present volume is one of the latter, an extremely thorough, practical and readable guide to building ship models in authentic detail and in proper proportion. In all, The Ship Model Builder's Assistant offers a treasury of both descriptive and "how-to" information essential to model builders and highly enlightening for all fascinated by the great sailing ships of America's past.
The Second Book Of The Ship Modeling Foundation.......2001-01-05
The only reason I didn't give this book 5 stars is due to the dated writing, which is sometimes distracting. If not for that, it's 5 stars!!
A must for you if you're just beginning, like me. The author explains everything very well. Not only how things work, but why they work. His specifics about construction are excellent, if only for those who are curious about sailing vessels. His charts are wonderful for answering questions about construction and cutting before the cut is made. He really gets down to the nuts and bolts.
I don't agree that this book is not for the beginner. I'm a beginner, and I have learned much from this book, and continue to reinforce that knowledge with the book. If you be a beginning builder, a student of sailing vessels, or just plain curious about the subject, get this book. Remember, it reads a bit differently then more current books, but you'll smile at that fact, and get the benefit of the knowledge imparted within.
NOT FOR THE BEGINNER.......2000-12-17
THIS BOOK IS MORE FOR THE SHIP HISTORIAN, NOT THE MODELER WHO IS LOOKING FOR HELP AND GUIDANCE WITH KITS. BUT NOT ALL IS LOST. THE RIGGING INFORMATION IS SOMEWHAT HELPFULL.
Facinating- Not "how to" but "why".......2000-04-24
If you ever want reference book that you can read, not just pretty pictures, this is it. It has extensive detail on all aspects of ship building and how it done before kits. It tells you the why and how of ship building.
