Book Description
This book has been a classic color theory reference in Europe for several years, and is available now, for the first time, in English translation. The book is arranged to follow light from a stimulus outside the human body, through the reaction of the visual organs of the body and ultimately to the occurrence of the visual experience in the brain. Colorful schematic drawings and photographs presented with explanatory captions demonstrate many elements of color theory from the organization of color to the perception of a rainbow. Beyond as explanation of the actual processes, Mr Zwimpfer demonstrates the total relationship which takes the perception of color beyond a mere passive registering, such as in photography, to a three-dimensional perception of our world. The book will fascinate and inform artists, photographers, students and others who are interested in color theory.

Customer Reviews:
Good pictures, but lacks a coherent point of view........1999-04-09
Ron Agam, Yaakov's son, is an accomplished photographer, as is evident in this book. The photographs included depict the activities of the haredim in Jerusalem, at the Kotel and elsewhere. The pictures are good, all in black and white, and manage to catch the various emotions of the ultra-Orthodox as they go about their daily lives, mostly in prayer.
The problem with the book is that it doesn't live up to its title. Only half the pictures are taken at the Kotel. The others are in the Meah Shearim, and other haredi institutions. Once he's away from the Wall, there is no coherent point of view, either of the subject matter, or what the pictures are meant to convey.
As a coherent photo essay, the book is lacking in (forgive me) focus. As a collection of good pictures, it works.

Book Description
Because of the dearth of experimental animal models of psychiatric disorders, the study of the effect of the disease state is only possible in tissue derived from patients vs. controls, especially in the target tissue of disease-related changes in the brain. The human postmortem brain offers the most appropriate experimental paradigm towards understanding the etiology of psychiatric disorders. The availability of post-mortem human samples from psychiatric patients and comparison groups in recent years has contributed prominently to the accumulating body of information leading to a better understanding of these disorders.
This is the first book to summarize this research approach and the meaningful data which has recently been acquired.

12" x 12" Catalog. Dozens of photos. Text in English and Japanese.
Book Description
For the first time ever a cancelled show has been resurrected on the basis of its cult following in syndication, on the internet and on DVD (Over 2.2 million DVDs sold to date!) and we've got the tie–in book authored by one of the show's hilarious lead writers and animators!
At first sight, the Griffens may seem like a normal blue collar family from Quonochontaug Rhode Island, but Peter (the family's loutish dad), Brian (the erudite, martini–swilling pet dog) and Stewie (the evil toddler son) set them apart from all others.
Now Stewie––a true baby genius and the most popular of the Griffen clan––speaks out. Having been hell bent on achieving world domination ever since he escaped the cursed ovarian Bastille he was incarcerated in for nine grueling months, he has finally decided that in order to rule the world we live in one must first understand it. Herewith are his musings on family, love, parenting, preschool, work, pop culture, politics and more. If only we knew then what Stewie knows now, adults everywhere could have defeated their mother's matriarchal tyranny and toppled the "gynocracy" she ruled over . . .and god knows what else!
This book is for the insufferable child in us all, eager to buck the ways of the old guard or just eager for a laugh.
Customer Reviews:
If you like Stewie..........2006-01-24
My whole family loves Family Guy, so I bought this as a gift for my father (who normally doesn't read at all). Come Christmas morning, he couldn't put it down, and the laughs just never ended. Haven't read it yet myself, but I'm sure it must be hilarious...
It gave me a few chuckles.......2005-10-29
Overall, this book is nothing to write home about. Don't get me wrong now - I'm a huge Family Guy fan, and I love Stewie. Steve Callaghan - a producer and writer for Family Guy from its very first season - did a great job writing this book as though it was written by Stewie, and at times it's quite amusing. Unfortunately, Stewie's sarcastic and misanthropic wit isn't half as funny on paper as it is coming from Seth McFarlane's mouth and with his brilliant delivery, and most of the jokes here are stale and predictable - quite a lot of them were actually recycled from the show. More than that I was disappointed by the artwork - which is all snatched directly from the Family Guy episodes, hardly any new material was made freshly for the book.
In direct comparison with Bart Simpson's Guide to Life, Stewie's Guide to World Domination is less an original work and more an excuse to suck a few more bucks from the show's fans. Perhaps Family Guy just doesn't have enough years behind it to be as mythological as the Simpsons; or perhaps the book could have been funnier had Seth himself written it, but I doubt that would have made much difference. Stewie just isn't that funny on paper. Mind you, the devoted Family Guy will want to add it to his merchandise collection (I'd like to use this opportunity to point out that I'm wearing my Brian Griffin boxer shorts as I'm writing these very lines) but keep your expectations low. And for anyone else, you'll probably get very little out of it.
Whitty and Humerous.......2005-10-26
If you are thinking of entering world domination this toddler can get you on the right foot!!
Stewie is the best!.......2005-10-21
very funny....a perfect addition to our collection of Family Guy dvds
World Domintation?.......2005-10-11
Its a great book but it won't help you take over the world, which was my sole purpose for buying the book.

Customer Reviews:
A trip down geek memory lane.......2007-03-20
All of Bruce Henderon's books are worth a dozen times what he sells them for; flawless, stunning reproductions of great movie posters. Buy them ALL! this is my favorite, though.
Great book! Great images! But here's why I'm disappointed........2005-01-06
This is a TERRIFIC book, at a terrific price, filled with - you guessed it - terrific, clean, sharp, colorful images of some of the best science fiction and fantasy movie posters ever created. In that respect, it meets and exceeds a five-star rating.
Alas... I'm still disappointed by it. Here's why. I already have a lot of the Bruce Hershenson books, as well as a number of other movie poster books. This book is Volume 20 in Hershenson's series, yet to those who have earlier volumes, it's a bit misleading to call it that. For earlier volumes, Hershenson took care to try not to duplicate images that had already appeared in the volumes that preceded it. There were occasional duplications, but even those were sometimes welcome to get the images in various sizes (for earlier volumes, the reproduction size would vary from 1 poster on a page to as many as 9 posters on a page). One of the great advantages of this volume is that ALL the posters are presented at full page size, 1 per page. There's even a wide margin at the spine side of the page so you don't have to force the book open wider to see the inside edge of the poster art. (Two thumbs up for that design feature!) My complaint is that the selection in this book - 60 posters - is almost entirely duplicated from earlier Hershenson volumes, AND are generally the same posters for the same movies that all the other poster books have printed ad nauseum over the years.
In that respect, the "60 Great" movie poster books are really "Best Of" collections, which is why I think they should not have been numbered as part of the continuing series. Like a "Greatest Hits" collection from a band, these are spectacular collections, just don't be expecting anything other than the most familiar titles.
Bottom line - it's unquestionably well worth having, but if you're an old hand at movie poster books, don't expect anything out of the ordinary.
Book Description
In Western Civilization Mathematics and Music have a long and interesting history in common, with several interactions, traditionally associated with the name of Pythagoras but also with a significant number of other mathematicians, like Leibniz, for instance. Mathematical models can be found for almost all levels of musical activities from composition to sound production by traditional instruments or by digital means. Modern music theory has been incorporating more and more mathematical content during the last decades. This book offers a journey into recent work relating music and mathematics. It contains a large variety of articles, covering the historical aspects, the influence of logic and mathematical thought in composition, perception and understanding of music and the computational aspects of musical sound processing. The authors illustrate the rich and deep interactions that exist between Mathematics and Music.
Book Description
Minnesota Fats was a brilliant pool player, but he was even better at lying about his past. Wimpy Lassiter, the gentleman hustler, started playing at age seven, and for the rest of his life lived for the rush of victory and high stakes. Violent and determined, Jersey Red made and lost a fortune at the table.
With a passion for the game evident on every page, R.A. DYER takes us through the smoky bars and late nights where a win was just as dangerous as a loss. He captures the game's popularity in the thirties, its dark days in the fifties, and its renaissance and apex in the sixties, fueled by the smashing success of Paul Newman and Jackie Gleason going toe-to-toe in The Hustler. It was an era that culminated in the legendary nationally televised tournaments in Little Egypt, Illinois, where Jersey Red and Wimpy Lassiter went at it for hours. And it was an era that ended in perhaps the most dramatic scene in all of pool. Just as Jersey Red beat Wimpy Lassiter in 1969, after a decade of bitter rivalry, the police shut down the tournament. Cameras in tow, they arrested eighty hustlers--including the new champion!
From Fats's first showdown--in Brooklyn, with a Texas-style gunslinger in cowboy boots and revolvers--to world championship clashes, HUSTLER DAYS is a rollicking portrait of one of our national treasures.
Customer Reviews:
THE REAL FAT MAN.......2007-08-09
Pool is probably one of the few sports that the general public knows virtually next to nothing on. Ask anybody to name one pool player and the majority will say "Minnesota Fats". Most of the public would be amazed to find out that he wasn't a champion, never won a tournament, probably couldn't even beat half the country. This book explains how he could con a nation into thinking he was "the greatest" and in the process become single handedly the biggest promoter to the sport the game has ever known. Yes, this book is really about the true story of Rudolph Wanderone (Fats) and it is a very good read.
He had an army and dead nuts, then he dumped on the on the locksmith good. Real good, see........2007-07-28
Who wouldn't want to be a pool hustler, being rich without ever having to work a day in your life? It's an exciting fantasy. To live in Little Egypt during the early 40's shooting pool with Minnesota Fats would've been incredible. Or riding with Sonny Barger in the mid 60's or any other kind of walk on the wild side fantasy one could concoct.
The author clearly feels the same way in a midlife crisis sort of way. The subject matter is definitely fascinating, but I wish R.A. Dyer could've taken himself out of the text more. The book reads like he learned all his tough guy speech patterns from Scorcese films.
Another thing that would've helped the prose is to explain the games more within the text. To an outsider it could get difficult during the game decriptions. It've been nice to not have to constantly check the glossary in the back.
Fantastic look at a bygone era of hustling on the road.......2007-05-07
Reflects the history of American pool playing from pre-Depression days to first resurgence in pool after the movie THE HUSTLER. As an aside, the larger resurgence happened after the sequel THE COLOR OF MONEY when women also entered the game and upscale rooms flourished. Many rooms have closed after the recent popularity of poker on TV.
Back to the book, anyone with an interest in the history of American pool playing, hustling, and the sociology of pool--this is a must own!!!
Great book about a great era.......2007-05-02
As a pool player, I caught the end of what "Hustler Days" describes as the heyday of the road hustler. I watched two of the three main subjects of this book in action: Rudolph Wanderone (The Fat Man) and Luther Lassiter. Having frequented some of the New York pool joints (McGirrs, 7-11) that figure in R.A. Dyer's vivid depiction of the hustler's life, I can partly attest to its authenticity.
But I was a player not a hustler. What Dyer gave me was the full and colorful history of the era that I saw ending. This is a beautifully written account covering the 1940s through the 60s. The story is told with the steely, merciless attitude of their game, but with a great deal of humor and affection.
Dyer has written about the game in various publications and he appreciates the astounding skills of these men: the hustle was in the fact that if you were not in their world, you had no idea of the abilities that could be brought to bear against you if you went to the table.
Anyone who saw "The Hustler" with Paul Newman has some idea of all this. But Dyer digs deep into their lives, sometimes painfully so. The canvas is not just New York but all the towns, big and small, where the action was. Such as Norfolk, Va., the Naval and shipbulding hub which during WWII was a pool hustler's paradise and a regular stop on the circuit.
Once tournaments began to be televised, another chapter in the hustler's life opened and Dyer has it covered, shot by excruciating shot. Big-time pool is all about pressure, and with Dyer you can feel it taking the air out of the room.
I loved reading this book and look forward to reading it again.
Wanted to be a professional like these guys!.......2007-01-16
This is a great book for all the baby boomers out there that loved to play pool (pocket billiards). The book explains where the word pool comes from. Anybody that wants to know the history of the early days should read this book! Really anybody with a interest in pool should read it.
Buy and enjoy. I know I did.
