Compared to other avant-garde movements that emerged in the 1960s, conceptual art has received relatively little serious attention from art historians and critics of the past twenty-five years. This landmark anthology collects for the first time the key historical documents that helped give definition and purpose to the movement. It also contains more recent memoirs by participants, as well as critical histories of the period by some of today's leading artists and art historians. Many of the essays and artists' statements have been translated into English specifically for this volume. A good portion of the exchange between artists, critics, and theorists took place in difficult-to-find limited-edition catalogs, small journals, and private correspondence. A useless book!

Tons of fortgetable pictures.......2005-05-18

This book DOES have tons of pictures of the Eastern Front. But the majority of them are typical pictures of non-combat operations. The term "the unpublished photographs" leads one to believe this collection of photos is special or rare. Well I'm here to say that they my be 'rare' but they are definately unspecial. Very boring shots of men standing here or there, shots of equipment and solders marching across landscape. But zero pictures of the combat horrors in which the eastern front well known for. If you want endless undescript photos of Russians, buy this book. If you want action photos of quality, search elsewhere.

More Than First Meets the Eye.......2003-07-07

Every now and then a book comes along that is unheralded and, if advertised at all, is done so only in esoteric publications. This is just such a book. It is a publishing diamond in the rough.

As the title indicates, this is a collection of photos "previously unpublished, from a former Soviet archive." While I'm no expert, I have been through many books and articles about the Eastern Front, and I don't recall seeing any of these before. Some photos appear to have been staged (not that there's anything wrong with that), but most appear to have been spontaneous. The photos span the entire Front during the whole of the war, almost entirely at the tactical level.

While the depth and breadth of the collection is impressive, the book's greatest strength lies in the captions that accompany each photograph. These are comprehensive, interesting and surprisingly full of detailed nomenclature of Soviet and German aircraft, weapons, vehicles and equipage. Some of the captions appear to be literal translations from Russian, and the resulting odd phraseology lends an unexpected authenticity.

The accompanying text provides a concise, well written, summary-level description of the course of the Russo-German war that puts the photos in each section into context. There are no maps, orders of battle, or other accouterments of military histories, but the text hangs together well and provides an excellent primer on this titanic struggle. Even for the more seasoned reader, insights abound that I have not seen in other such collections, such as the roll of Ultra and the Lucy spy network in Soviet preparations to meet the Wehrmacht's massive offensive towards Kursk in 1943, or the interwoven statistics throughout the book that quantify manpower and weaponry and thereby provide some sense of the opposing forces' capabilities.

This is not the definitive collection of photos, but it fits well with other albums and thus provides a valuable addition to one's WWII library. Whether used as a coffee table book or for more serious perusal, it will provide hours of enjoyable reading. Highly recommended.

Dark Days.......2003-05-31

Will Fowler publishes previously unseen photos of the bloodiest battleground of World War Two, the Eastern Front.

Laid out in cronological order, we are taken on that horrible journey that would ultimatley end up in Berlin. Pictures from both sides are used, not just of battles but of a way of life that ordinary humans were made to suffer in.

There are many books written about this subject and some are better than this one but for the fact that these pictures have come to life after so many years, makes for good but sad viewing.

Fine photo book........2003-03-18

Eastern Front by Will Fowler.

This is by far the best photo album dealing with the Eastern Front, from the Russian side.

The pictures and text are well laid out. The text in formative, the pictures interesting and varied. Taken in their totality they give a good impression of what it must have been like, seen from this distance.

I should point out that I also have a large number of photo album type books of the war from the German side and the percentage of photos in this book which appear to be propaganda photos is no higher then in similar books on the German forces, or the western allies.

Best collection of photos, from the Russian side, published so far. Now the archives have been open for a few years, with luck, there will be more books of a similar type from the Russian view.

It's best to know this from the start: Augusten Burroughs is mean. Augusten Burroughs is also outrageously X-rated. If you can get past those two things, Burroughs might just be the most refreshing voice in American books today, and his collection of acerbic essays will have you laughing out loud even while cringing in your seat. Whether he is stepping on the fingers of little children or giving you the blow-by-blow on a very unholy act, Burroughs manages to do it in a way that fills conflicted fans with both horror and glee.

Spanning from the surprisingly Machiavellian portrayal of his role in a Tang commercial at age seven to his more recent foray into dog ownership, Burroughs has what seems to be an endless supply of offbeat life experiences. Much like earlier David Sedaris collections (Barrel Fever or Naked), there are occasional fits and starts in the flow of the writing, but ultimately, Magical Thinking is worth reading (and re-reading). If you're familiar with Burroughs's memoirs, Running with Scissors, and Dry, you may find parts of Magical Thinking repetitive, since these essays bounce around in time between the other two. As the wrap-up of his Augusten's 3-part memoir series: Running With Scissors, Dry, and Magical Thinking, it was great to see all the stages of his life, and to put the pieces together.

LOVE this book.......2007-08-31

This book was just too funny. My friend and I had a great time reading snipets back and forth at work and laughing to ourselves. It is refreshing to read a book that embraces all aspects of humanity, even those that many of us are uncomfortable acknowledging. We especially enjoyed the Vanderbilt story and the ones toward the end about Dennis and Bentley. We look forward to reading more by him.

Magical Thinking from Augusten Brroughs.......2007-08-12

Augusten has a unique way of looking at things that makes you realize you are thinking the exact same thing. He is only brave enough to say those things out loud. I really enjoyed this book. He went into deeper things referenced from "Running with Scissors" & "Dry" and also gave his insight into things like Amish culture, the avid readers of this books and his true love. This is not a boring read, you will find yourself laughing out loud.

So funny!.......2007-08-08

This is my second Burroughs book (after reading Running with Scissors). It is really funny. Each chapter is a stand alone story or anecdote, not necessarily related to the others. This made it such a quick read becuase each story goes so fast. This author has a great sense of humor and narrates the stories in a way that you feel like your friend is telling you them. He talks about his faults, dreams, relationships, and other aspects of his sometimes crazy life---all which make him very likable. Not to sound cliche, but I was actually laughing out loud at times while reading this book and I don't say that often. Highly recommend to anyone whether they are familiar with this author or not. I enjoyed it so much and didn't want to put it down.

Honestly Hilarious.......2007-07-24

This is what good writing is all about. Flow, plot, intrigue! Everything is excellent in this book!

I LOVE LOVE the chapter about the little girl who kicks Augusten...had me laughing out loud, literally. I was appalled by the rat story and absolutely stuck to the book reading about the scamming housekeeper! I could not put this book down and I can't wait for the next Augusten Burroughs book!

5 stars, I completely recommend this book to everyone, reguardless of literary preference!

A helpful guide for this newcomer!.......2006-11-20

While I am a big RPG fan, this was my first regional sourcebook for Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay (WFRP) and I was very impressed. The writing was clear as well as fun and gave a great overview of the kingdom and its history (~30 pages), regional profiles complete with a detailed sample inhabitant (~45 pages), as well as career information (~15 pages) and a short adventure (~13 pages). Consistent with WFRP being a "grim" world, Bretonnia is far from an idyllic place. The peasants are oppressed, women are treated as second class citizens, and even when well meaning, the nobles leave a lot to be desired as administrators.

The supplement includes a good selection of Bretonnian careers, e.g. Battle Pilgrims, as well as detailed starting racial features by Dukedom. However, its main focus is adding a lot to the knight career path for those choosing to be from Bretonnia. Many might find this career path - Knight Errant, Knight of the Realm, Questing Knight, and Grail Knight - more satisfying than the existing - Squire, Knight, Knight of the Inner Circle career path. I liked the various "knightly virtues" the supplement included and the overview of the grail quest.

One thing I always need is a good map and there is a nice one present for the whole realm as well as the individual provinces or dukedoms when they are discussed. My only complaint is that there isn't a scale of miles so it's impossible to calculate distances with any precision. This seems to be a common issue in the WFRP universe.

The supplement included an adventure introducing characters to all levels of Bretonnian society and the best and worst of its nobility. I especially liked how the adventure included statistics for both starting and experienced characters. While an experienced GM could easily make adjustments, as someone just starting out this was very helpful.

A solid book detailing Bretonia. A must have if you plan to run a game in Bretonia, or you want to play Questing/Grail Knight. (Think French + Arthurian) Buy it if you've got the money, and enjoy these types of books. It's good, but not a must have.
