I bought this book to gain an idea of how to paint western backdrops for a model railroad. The book is thouroughly illustrated with progressive views of how to create different images. Work of multiple artists are presented, so it goes beyond just one style. Explanations are given over the use of color. I have found it to be a very useful guide, and did I mention, it has lots of pictures!

Michael Carroll has written, once again,a very fine book. This one meets a specific need in the artistic painting market of today. Space Art is a unique topic that is a favorite of the author's and it shows. The narrative is presented clearly with step-by-step, easy-to-follow directions, including which colors to use, how to create textures, and specific tricks of the trade used to make the artist's space paintings as realistic as possible. The book portrays painting lessons, with colorful thumbnail views, for all levels of students, from beginners to intermediate through to advanced. Michael has also included educational highlights to broaden the painter's knowledge of his/her favorite space subject as they seek to broaden their painting experience to include the wonderful world of Space. It's a great book and very helpful.

The collection features works by major figures throughout the history of American art as well as important second-tier artists. Charles Willson Peale, for example, is included, along with the Boston still-life painter Thomas Badger. The nineteenth century is represented by the likes of Winslow Homer and the lesser known Francis Edmonds, the early twentieth by John Singer Sargent and Susan Watkins. Neoclassical sculpture and naïve painting are areas of particular strength.

At the core of the Chrysler's holdings are works acquired by Walter P. Chrysler, Jr. (1909-1988), whose collection came to what was then the Norfolk Museum of Arts and Sciences in 1971. While he was deeply interested in the art of the distant past, Mr. Chrysler also enthusiastically embraced the art of his contemporaries. He paid homage to the richness and diversity of twentieth-century American art with the acquisition of works by realist painters such as Robert Henri and George Bellows; Abstract Expressionists including Jackson Pollock, Franz Kline, and Hans Hofmann; and Pop artists Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein. American Art at the Chrysler Museum also includes noteworthy art of the 1980s, 1990s, and beyond, gifts from local Hampton Roads citizens who have maintained this commitment to the art of the present.

The publication, which has been made possible by a generous grant from The Henry Luce Foundation, Inc., will now allow this singular collection to become more accessible to the public, as well as to those involved in the study of American art.

"Take that hanger off your head, you idiot!" were the last words Jeff Garlin heard before being fired from Spec's Music store after only one day on the job, just one of the many firings he recounts in "That Garlin Boy." In "Jimmy the Idiot," Dana Gould sums up his firing from the cast of the sitcom Working that led him to become a producer of The Simpsons: "In the second episode, I was a math genius, in the third -- a motocross racer, and in the fourth episode I was replaced by a chimp, but nobody noticed." In "Poor Judgment," Illeana Douglas tells about being fired after a few hours of working as a coat check girl: "How is it possible to be fired from hanging coats? I have arms. I know what coats are. Very entertaining.......2007-08-12

After I heard the author being interviewed about this book on NPR, I had to get it. It's a quick, and very enjoyable read, most of the stories are really funny, and self depreciating. As the cover makes clear, the book focuses mainly on celebrities that have been fired, and later found success.

I laughed out load at the stories!.......2007-02-17

This book is full of short stories about the experience of being fired. I loved it and found myself laughing out loud and sharing the stories with my family at the dinner table. It's not a great inspirational read but it takes a lighthearted look at "losing a job" and sometimes thats just want we need!

Cleaning the Grease-Trap.......2006-12-20

As a teen, I was fired from my job as deep-fry cook at Kentucky Fried Chicken for failure to adequately clean out the grease-traps. I have carried this mortifying secret with me for years, and after reading FIRED!, I am emboldened to share it with the world.

As for FIRED!, I should quickly point out that virtually all of the book's 50-plus entries about being canned are by successful show-biz types. Thus, their stories are generally atypical of the workplace experience. So if you're looking for hardcore blue-collar stories, this ain't the place; the author you're looking for is Studs Terkel.

But can these show-biz types write? Surprisingly, yes, most of them can. There are a few duds in here (I don't have the heart to dis them in this review), but most entries have a smile in store for you, and some are "LOL," as we hipsters say. Of interest to me was the fact that, due to the editor's National Public Radio association, there are a number of NPR contributors herein, among whom Sandra Tsing Loh distinguishes herself nicely.

As pointed out elsewhere on this reviews page, this book's highest ambition is to be a book of amusing trifles and anecdotes, and it succeeds on its own terms. Now if you'll excuse me, I have a grease-trap that needs tending. (And no, I am not speaking metaphorically.)

Everyone Gets Fired/Laid-Off/Unhired at least once. . ........2006-07-24

Having been fired and downsized, this is an enjoyable book. From celeberties to normal people, and unfair, unexpecting firings to deserved firings, this book is a fun and fast read. The stories range from funny to sad, but the general theme throughout, is now mattering how devasting and ego-shattering a firing/lay-off can be, everyone survived and moved-on.

Fun, but not useful for real people.......2006-05-24

If you're a regular person who got fired from normal full-time job looking to get inspiration or find the humor from others suffering the same, this book is not for you. This book is mostly collection of anecdotes from show biz people, people who are routinely unemployed between gigs for whom getting hired and fired is a huge fact of life. So...cute stories, a good light read. There's still an opportunity out there for someone to really write this book.

Memories that evoke the physical awareness of touch, smell, and bodily presence can be vital links to home for people living in diaspora from their culture of origin. How can filmmakers working between cultures use cinema, a visual medium, to transmit that physical sense of place and culture? In The Skin of the Film Laura U. Marks offers an answer, building on the theories of Gilles Deleuze and others to explain how and why intercultural cinema represents embodied experience in a postcolonial, transnational world.
Much of intercultural cinema, Marks argues, has its origin in silence, in the gaps left by recorded history. Filmmakers seeking to represent their native cultures have had to develop new forms of cinematic expression. Marks offers a theory of “haptic visuality”—a visuality that functions like the sense of touch by triggering physical memories of smell, touch, and taste—to explain the newfound ways in which intercultural cinema engages the viewer bodily to convey cultural experience and memory. Using close to two hundred examples of intercultural film and video, she shows how the image allows viewers to experience cinema as a physical and multisensory embodiment of culture, not just as a visual representation of experience. Finally, this book offers a guide to many hard-to-find works of independent film and video made by Third World diasporic filmmakers now living in the United States, Great Britain, and Canada.
The Skin of the Film draws on phenomenology, postcolonial and feminist theory, anthropology, and cognitive science. It will be essential reading for those interested in film theory, experimental cinema, the experience of diaspora, and the role of the sensuous in culture.

Laura Marks' analysis of the connection between film/video and the senses, particularly our non-audiovisual senses, is fantastic. The focus of The Skin of the Film is work by filmmakers and video artists who live apart from their native culture and make work about this separation. The artists discussed in this book draw upon sensory experience to relate personal accounts of loss, longing, and remembering. Marks' in depth discussion and analysis gets at the heart of sensory memory that we all experience. Additionally, she relates this to strategies used by filmmakers throughout the history of cinema to push the cinematic experience beyond its audiovisual roots. I recommend this book for artists and film enthusiasts alike.

sometimes scary tale.......2006-10-29

Ronnie Wood is one of the true rock greats. He has played with frankly everybody of any consequence, been a key figure in the greatest rock bands then extant (Jeff Beck, Faces, Rod Stewart, Rolling Stones), released quirky and touchingly charming solo albums, and guested onstage with talents large and small. While certainly no guitar virtuoso, his playing instead is honest and personal; he plays unlike anyone else I have heard. Throughout one gets the feeling of humor, great charm, and a love of performing. I love him.

Wendy Mullen loves him too; she loves him *a lot*. And this book is really her story, not Ronnie Wood's at all.

At a Stones concert in the mid-90s, Ronnie more or less randomly smiles one of his huge ear-to-ear grins into the crowd, Cupid's arrow strikes Wendy, and a tale of obsession begins. Intrigued and fascinated, she writes a fan letter and eventually a signed photo appears in her mail! Now she's a goner. Pursuing her fascination and new raison d'etre in any way she can, she comes across fan communities on the internet, and meets varied other monomaniancs in her travels. She and some new friends begin criss-crossing the country, and then other countries, following the Stones tours, and finding imaginative and sometimes successful ways of getting decent and even afforable tickets to sold-out shows, as close to the object of their affections as they can. They camp outside of the hotels the Stones are staying at, and make fun of the obviously stalking and dangerous, pathetic fanatics who are doing everything that Wendy et al are doing, but a few feet or inches closer to the hapless band members. They hurl objects like men's briefs or scarves onstage hoping for recognition from Wood for their loyalty and love. They dodge security to get closer to the stage, or even briefly backstage.

On rare occasion, Wendy gets a word or two from one of the Stones, even from Wood (mouthed to her in some huge concert venue from stage), more often from roadies and band employees, and gets backstage more than once. [...] Once home, having been face to face with her obsession and suddenly realized the gulf between them, she decides that there is no point in going on with this type of pursuit and 'releases' poor Woody, and herself, from her love. We are all relieved, including probably Wendy's husband.

The book, which has won actual literary prizes, is well written (Mullen reminds us time and again that she has a PhD in English lit), and the author has a keen eye for detail and there is an honest appreciation of irony (as when she and her friends look down on other stalkers). I did enjoy reading it, snideness above to the contrary. But I came away actually feeling pity for Wood and for all celebrities of his rank (and he doesn't even have to deal with the adulation Jagger gets). I have met Ron Wood at art shows, and must say that he is surprisingly approachable and charming. I have met other rock stars and can say that Wood is in that way quite an exception. But I have never had any illusions that somehow I can get Woody to pick up the phone on a Friday and invite me over for a Guiness or two.

Through the flowering of her obsession, Wendy has become hugely expert on Ron Wood's music and musical career, and her website, slideonron.com is strongly recommended for any Woody fan. But this book, well written and honest and in a way innocently and then not so innocently heartfelt, made me uneasy somehow.

Excellent book - a must for any Stones fan or any fan of a rock band.......2006-03-20

This book was one of those that you pick up and you dont put it down until you've finished it. I thought it was very interesting, very personal, and I really liked the story, especially the ending. It was well written, and I would highly recommend it to any Stones fan, or any music fan who has had a "fan based" relationship with a musical artist or a band. Of course, the ending was great, and how appropriate that the lyric "You cant always get what you want, but if you try sometimes, you just might find, you get what you need", couldnt be more appropriate. Well Done!

I read this book straight through from 1 am til 9 am one night! What a book! As a starry eyed stones fan, how can you not love it?! The way she recreated the concerts is just amazing, I can feel my heart beating faster when she mentions things like 'Moving to the small stage' or 'Oh, she'll like that' (Her backstage pass phone call). The feeling I get at the concerts is like nothing else, and you captured it perfectly. I couldn't reccomend this book any higher, it's a must read for Stones Fans, Ronnie Fans, or Music fans alike. I just couldn't put it down.....

It's not that easy to find appropriate and interesting sticker/activity books for preschoolers, but this one is terrific. As we read the story of Franklin's big hockey game, there are a number of fun puzzles to solve, including hidden object, coloring, word search, matching, word scramble, connect-the-dot and a maze. There's even a recipe for hot chocolate, a lesson in how to draw Franklin and an answer page. There are 30 stickers that really are reusable when placed on the glossy scenes of Franklin's bedroom, the ice pond or the party hall.

While the word search and word scramble may be a little old for the target audience, this activity book is one of the best I've seen.
