Book Description

The interiors of the great country and town houses built in Britain in the eighteenth century were splendid creations, increasingly extravagant as fashions changed and aristocratic home owners attempted to outdo one another. This gorgeous book surveys the decorative schemes of these fabulous homes, considering the combined effects created by design, furniture, textiles, silver, and artworks.
John Cornforth, the foremost authority on British interiors of this era, covers a wide range of subjects. He discusses changing social practice and the uses to which rooms were put; the way that fashions in dress mirrored fashions in interiors; the impact of chinoiserie and Eastern styles that became prevalent due to burgeoning trade; the primacy of upholstery in beds, curtains, wall hangings, seat furniture, and case covers; the influence of decorator William Kent; and the ways that collections of art were integrated into designs. And he concludes with detailed case studies of eight preeminent country houses.
Engagingly written and generously illustrated, this book is certain to appeal to anyone who maintains, restores, or enjoys visiting historic houses.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars EXQUISITE GEORGIAN.......2006-03-08

This is a beautifully realized book on a most deserving subject. The text is highly informative and the images are vivid. The craftmanship of these interiors is astounding. Early Georgian furniture and interior design is so elegant and it does not overwelm, like its contemporary styles like Louis XIV, the woodwork and molding in these homes is just breathtaking. If you have any interest in the Georgian style or just appreciate beautiful interiors then you will love this book.

4 out of 5 stars All you need to know about early Georgian English Interiors.......2005-10-25

As a classically trained english architect I find myself in a unique position to authoritively review this book. And what a book. That perfect blend of photos (most of them colour), drawings - both plans and renderings, and an informative text. This is a must for anyone interested in early Georgian Interiors, as it comprehensively covers interior architecture, decoration, furniture/artwork, and the general design aesthetic of this era. If only we still had the artisians and cratspeople to still build like this. It is an inspiration to any aspiring classical architect.

                      Book Description

                      Congratulations, you're a new mommy!

You've brought your brand-new bundle of joy home, and there's so much to look forward to: photos; baby's first word; clipping those oh-so-cute and very tiny fingernails; finding just the right stroller; sex again (gulp!); and, oh yes, losing the weight.

The joys of being a new mommy or daddy are endless, but so are the worries and the advice. Jenny McCarthy, the New York Times bestselling author of Belly Laughs, told you the truth about pregnancy and childbirth. Now she's telling the truth about baby's first year.

With hilarious musings on desperately trying to recall lullabies, losing the weight, baby- proofing the house, encountering mommies with superbabies, postpartum depression, dueling grandmas, and still trying to lose the weight, Baby Laughs is the perfect companion for anyone trying to raise the next president, those just trying to get to the next naptime, and anyone who was ever in diapers.

Bruce Herhsensons' series of poster books have become the bible of the poster world. The images captured are of extremely high quality and are a must have for any collector of movie materials. I highly recommend these series of books to anyone who is interested in the subject matter.

                      5 out of 5 stars A must-have volume for any cine-buff and film historian!.......1999-11-19

This book, along with its companion volume, "Best Pictures Movie Posters" is part of movie poster maven Bruce Hershenson's exhaustive multi-volume series of books highlighting the history and beauty of what much of mainstream America has only in the last ten years begun to recognize. And that is movie posters are a "popular art" form that can stand proudly next to all other styles of art from gothic to modern, from expressionist to impressionist. Great film art borrows from all of these styles and this volume, which focuses only on posters associated with Academy Award winning movies, illustrates innumerable examples. A fine book for any collector (get the hardcover edition if you can, it's harder to find; if Amazon doesn't have it, it's available from Mr. Hershenson directly at mail@brucehershenson.com.

5 out of 5 stars Superb, Extraordinary Detail On Every Level!.......1999-11-15

This review can easily apply to any of the books in the Bruce Hershenson edited series of film poster history. Hershenson rightly treats film graphics not just as pop culture artifacts but true works of art. His books are filled with a curator's eye for superior choice and reproduction, each poster in striking color and with a clarity of printing that rivals most any coffee table art book. Somewhere between advertising and illustration, film posters, like book jackets and record covers, inhabit that imaginative and atmospheric zone where one art reflects another. It's not just the history of film or the history of film design, it's a history of twentieth century Saturday afternoons and Saturday nights. How often we would go into the dark theatre armed only with the ideas and ideals of the posters outside, and then return to them afterward, perhaps with nodding affirmation or smirking disillusionment, but still a vision of what could be. This series of books should be subtitiled: THE FINE ART OF ANTICIPATION, for no matter if expectation was filled or emptied by the films behind them, their posters kept on shining.

5 out of 5 stars Every movie lover will want to own this book........1999-11-08

Gorgeous color reproductions of great movie posters remind you how captivating the appeal of movies has been. Bruce Hershenson's books are a tremendous value, and his efforts to record movie history through poster art represent a real service to movie lovers.

5 out of 5 stars Best poster series ever printed!.......1999-11-08

For lovers of film, film history, and specifically, poster art, Bruce Hershenson's series of full-color books is the cream of the crop! And, the quality of printing and photography is superb, with razor sharp images and vibrant colors.

5 out of 5 stars Few Better Books to Learn About BJ Basics.......2007-07-07

I'm reading "Blackjack Blueprint" for the second time.
It is an impressive tutorial and practice guide for
anyone seriously interested in learning to play blackjack.
Similar to Revere's classic work, Mr. Blaine explains the
basics one must learn to get an advantage playing the game.
Then he offers practice drills designed to ingrain those
basic skills/info, so the new BJ player can perform at a
level to compete with the casinos.
The last half of the book introduces related topics like
BJ tournament play, casino critters, comps, shuffle tracking,
team play, camouflage, etc. All interesting topics for aspiring
                                advantage players.
Blackjack Blueprint is among the best introductory books on
advantage blackjack play that I've read. It compares favorably
with Revere's and Wong's books, and is more up-to-date.
I don't hesitate to recommend it, and am happy to own it.

Rick Blaine is a blackjack expert who understand all aspects of the game and can take you step by step through many of the problems and experiences that savvy blackjack players encounter. His information is diverse and valuable. What is just as important is that he writes in a way that is easily understandable to even average players. He has a wealth of knowledge and this book shows flair and insight. Whether you become an advanced card counter or a super-astute basic strategy player, gaining more knowledge is important to become the best player you can be. This book gives you plenty of knowledge.

I read this book quickly at the bookstore the other day and was thouroughly impressed. I prescreen my blackjack books now due to the sheer number of them and that most of them are recycled and crap. This, however, was truly an exception. This book takes the beginner from the very basics of the game, to basic strategy, card counting, and money management, all while explaining how to get away with it in a practical enviornment. Add in anecdotes and a special section of putting together a team, and you have yourself a unique and refreshing reference guide. I particularly liked the added drills that were included with this novel. Definately one of the better of the blackjack book genre.

                                5 out of 5 stars Well rounded.......2006-09-20

There are a million card counting books out there, most of which offer a more thorough examination of card counting than this one does. But then again, for most of us, 300 pages about the minutae of card counting may be a bit much.

What this book offers is a quick but sufficient introduction to basic strategy and card counting based on Stanford Wong's Hi-Lo system, which is pretty easy to learn. Blaine spends a chapter on teaching the reader how to count, and then another one on how to adjust to a true count. Subsequently, he shows how to tailor your play (and betting, of course) to the count.

The card counting portion takes up less than half of the book. Some of the rest of the book may or may not be interesting to some readers. The sub-title of the book is "How to Play Like a Pro...Part-Time", but much of the remainder of the book is more "professional" in nature. There is a section on zone tracking as well as a LOT of stuff on team play.

I am not a professional card counter. In fact, I read the book based mostly on curiosity and the desire to perhaps play at a slight advantage at low stakes on Vegas trips. However, I still found the section on team play interesting on its own merits. Blaine kept a diary of a team and its successes (or in this case, failures). It was nice to see that Blaine didn't sugar coat things and included a section on how even at an advantage, negative swings are inevitable at times.

If you're planning a trip to Vegas, the book is definitely worth a read. Pick it up a few weeks beforehand and give the card counting tips some practice and I think it'll be more than worth the twenty bucks you shell out for it.

4 out of 5 stars Something for everyone.......2006-07-22

I've read several books on Blackjack, as that is the only game I enjoy at the casinos. This one definitely added to my knowledge. Seems like it has something for all levels of players. I particularly liked the list of things that inexperienced counters do (but shouldn't). I found that I do most of them (sigh). Knowing this now should help me to advance my game and cover. The sections on team play weren't relevant to me, but still interesting reading.

                                Book Description

Professional blackjack player Kevin Blackwood shares his million–dollar winning strategies for mastering the odds and consistently beating the house at their own game.

Play Blackjack Like the Pros is the requisite introduction to the modern game of blackjack, including high and low stakes casino, shoe games (several decks shuffled together), online, and tournaments. Blackwood begins with the basic rules of play and then moves on to teach his proven card–counting method, broken–down into three levels: novice, recreational, and professional. He also covers camouflaging techniques (it's perfectly legal to count cards, but if the house catches you they will kick you out), money management, and team play. Blackwood includes many stories of his and other professionals' triumphs at the tables and keeps the highly technical language that bogs down most gaming books to an absolute minimum.

Play Blackjack Like the Pros is written in the style of Phil Hellmuth's Play Poker Like the Pros using easy–to–understand lessons that all levels of players can quickly benefit from.

o Blackwood is one of the world's top card counters. He began with only a few hundred dollars and has won over a million playing blackjack. In Play Blackjack Like the Pros he demonstrates how to earn over $10,000 a month from just a few days work.

o Blackjack is set to balloon in popularity. Ben Mezrich's book on the MIT card counting team Bringing Down the House was on the New York Times bestseller list for weeks and is being made into a movie staring Kevin Spacey. Blackjack Tournaments are growing in popularity with many of the top casinos offering large prize pools. Online Blackjack is currently a multi–million dollar industry. Blackwood keeps the highly technical language that bogs down most gaming books to an absolute minimum.

o Foreword by Stanford Wong, author of Professional Blackjack and the master of modern card counting.

5 out of 5 stars High Opt. 2 made easy to learn.......2007-05-12

This book focuses on the card counting system called High Opt 2. High Opt 2 is considered the Rolls Royce of all blackjack card counts because it outperforms all of the other systems, however, it contains alot of matrix numbers that make it difficult to learn for some people. The book includes a simplified version of High Opt.2 that makes it easier to learn.
Since High Opt.2 is mostly used in single and double deck games, the author makes recomendations as to which counts to use for shoe games.
The book also teaches complete Basic Strategy and an abbreviated version. Some of the other topics include how to win at tournament blackjack, internet blackjack, team play, camouflage, money management, and his experiences playing blackjack internationally including being harrassed by US customs upon re-entering the US with $40,000 in cash. It turns out Congress gives customs the authority to strip search anyone, including US citizens, entering the country with alot of money. They didn't do that to him, but it's scary to know that's what the law is. The author also sprinkles in personal anecdotes about his own experiences playing blackjack all over the country.

Ian Andersen gave us optimism, Don Schlesinger gave us the technical details, & Stanford Wong brilliantly told us what was important. But Kevin Blackwook's book PLAY BLACKJACK LIKE THE PROS puts it all together in a simplified way that not only is enjoyable reading, but more informative.

                                Book Description

Phil Hellmuth, Jr., winner of nine WSOP titles and author of Play Poker Like the Pros "Blackjack is definitely a game that you can make money playing, and this book shows you how to do it!"
Blackjack is by far the most popular casino table game. The reason is because it has the lowest house edge. While other table games give the house a minimum 3% edge, blackjack provides close to even odds for players willing to learn what is called "basic strategy." And for players who are able to learn card counting, blackjack is actually a beatable game.

But the reality is that out of the millions of people who play blackjack, only a small percentage will take the time or make the effort to play perfect basic strategy. And very few players will take the time to learn card counting. Most of those who do will ultimately fail in a live casino environment.

So what's a reasonably intelligent person to do? Among the blackjack books available today, few take readers beyond basic strategy, and of those that do, virtually none balance the necessary level of detail with a simple approach that is easily understood by everyone (not just math whizzes and autistic savants).

BLACKJACK: PLAY LIKE THE PROS is a comprehensive and easy-to-understand guide to playing and winning at blackjack. John Bukofsky—an expert player and card counter with over twenty years experience—provides readers with clear and engaging instruction in everything from the basics of game-play and strategy, up to and including card counting at the professional level.
                                In it, readers will find:
                                • A step-by-step approach that is easily understood by both beginners and serious players looking to take their game to a higher level. Though the book involves a technical subject, the writing style is casual yet clearly defines and explains each facet of the process. • Attention to details and finer points that are only touched on in many other books. • Chapters on betting and bankroll, casino countermeasures, camouflage techniques, and many of the other topics necessary to become a successful advantage player. • A chapter dedicated solely to "negative swings," which are the number one reason many aspiring serious players end up leaving the game. • Presentation of two separate point counts, which allows the reader to choose the system most suitable to him or her, depending on individual goals, time allowances, motivation, interface, etc.

The greatest feature of this book is its instruction in the holy grail of blackjack: card counting. Bukofsky shows readers how to learn and master the technique that many think is simply too difficult to learn, much less use in an actual casino. He also covers the intangibles playing under real world conditions, including many aspects not in any way associated with the actual mechanics of card counting.

How do we know that John Bukofsky is an expert card counter? Simple: he's been barred from playing blackjack in Las Vegas and harassed in Atlantic City and Connecticut. He's also played alongside some of the most prominent and prolific gamblers in the world at the Casino de Monte Carlo.

John's expertise in the mathematics of card counting became apparent by age thirteen, which led to a life-long interest in the game. An engineer by profession, John understands the need for precision and clarity, which he brings to this book. As a result, he has written the most intelligent and up-to-date book on blackjack ever written, one that goes into every level of the game. BLACKJACK: PLAY LIKE THE PROS is destined to become the bible for the next generation of blackjack players.

"A savvy, comprehensive text that covers the essentials of winning blackjack from soup to nuts. Bukofsky is an excellent writer, whose `hold-your-hand' style makes it easy for the reader to master, sequentially, the skills needed to become a successful player. Many blackjack books skimp on details, especially when it comes to the mathematics of the game or complete card-counting systems. Not so here. I highly recommend it."--Don Schlesinger, author of Blackjack Attack: Playing the Pros' Way

5 out of 5 stars Excellent EXCELLENT book on Blackjack!!.......2007-04-24

If you are a blackjack player this book will help you win. It is worth more than the price. It is endorsed by well-known experts. Many of the books published about blackjack are manuals. This book is more than just a manual. I highly recommend this book if you would like to win at blackjack consistently.

5 out of 5 stars When It Comes to Blackjack, He's a Genius.......2006-11-15

I loved this book. I've been interested in blackjack and the science of card-counting for a long time. Thing is, nobody has really written much about the game. And, upon reading this book, I am secure enough to admit this is the definitive book on the game of blackjack and the tools you need to beat the casino. Not only do you learn about the game but you also come to understand the intricacies of the casino. Mr. Bukofsky explains what to look for in the casino regarding how casino management tend to get the odds in their favor. However, this book puts the odds in the reader's favor. Thanks for the tips.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book, even if you don't play Blackjack!.......2006-10-31

The author starts at the lowest level, and leads the reader by the hand through the complexities of "pro" level Blackjack. Even if you don't plan to play the game at the casinos, the book is a must read for entainment value alone. He covers every aspect of the game, up to and including, behavior at the table and proper dress code to avoid suspicion.
In additon to the technical aspects of the game, he spices the book with personal experiences, successes and failures. A great book for knowledge and entertainment. Should be a must reference for all who plan to try their hand (not luck) at the casino tables.

                                5 out of 5 stars Great Resource!.......2006-10-02

This book is interesting, well written, well researched, and very readable. It explains the whys and wherefores of each combination, and the logic behind them. It is the best book I have on the subject. (Review by R.T. Hubbard)

4 out of 5 stars A Must Read For Any Serious Player.......2006-08-27

A must read for any serious player who wants to get to the next level. Two card counting methods are presented with lots of helpful hints on how to make learning the whole process easier. The Casino Countermeaure Chapter is an excellent description of what happens to good players when the casions discover someone can beat them, and many helpful tactics are covered in the next chapter on how to remain undetected once you are playing at that level. The chapter Blackjack Team Play also describes and teaches the nuances of this fascinating approach to the game. Overall, a sound and technically well written book with the player in mind that focusses on exactly what you need to know.
