Book Description
Book Description
A simple and provocative book offering a revisionist photo-essay on the ever-popular Japanese "dry landscape" or "rock" gardens. Not Zen, possibly art, more like "meta-gardens," gravel and sand compositions reject nature, yet are made of omnipresent natural dust. Quick to crumble, they are defiantly maintained by priest/rakers. Credited with philosophical profundity, their origins are murky, their meanings uncertain but immediate. Koren deliberately ignores "celebrity" rocks, moss, and foliage to demystify and explore a most peculiar human enterprise. Beautifully illustrated with duotone photographs of gravel and sand gardens in Kyoto.
About the Author
Leonard Koren, who was trained as an artist and architect, writes books about design and aesthetics. Among his most popular books are WABI SABI: For Artists, Design, Poets & Philosophers and Arranging Things: A Rhetoric of Object Placement.
"Featuring over 30 photos of graval and sand gardens taken in Kyoto, Japan, this thin paperback underscores the importance of 'experienceing the garden as garden.'" --

Customer Reviews:
Challenges the many myths surrounding `Zen gardens' .......2006-04-02
A collection of photographs of nothing more than raked gravel and sand, Leonard Koren challenges the many myths surrounding the `Zen gardens' of Japan in short essays interspersed throughout this book. He shows that their special context as part of temple precincts does not necessarily imply that these gardens were meant as `spiritual' installations, but only that they grew in the context of a specific aesthetic and function that developed in Japanese ritual and society.
While Koren's book is bound to ruffle the feathers of traditionalists that would like to idealize these gardens as an expression of Zen philosophy, I believe he contributes to the demystification that is going on in contemporary writing about Japanese gardens. In that regard this book is an important contribution to the ongoing dialogue and discussion about the origins and history of the dry landscape garden in Japan.
A conceptual tour de force.......2000-06-12
Everything I thought I knew about Japanese gardens, especially so-called "Zen Gardens," was turned on its head by this enlightening gem. I will never look at, or think about, Japanese rock gardens in the same way. Highly recommended for a completely fresh approach to an old subject.

Book Description
Janie and Sam were happy just being kids -- that is, until celebrities started popping out of their hamper to tell them how to behave and to sell them expensive clothes. With Hollywood and its friends in the liberal media declaring war on traditional values, what's a concerned parent to do? It's "Help! Mom!" to the rescue! This hilarious sequel to "Help! Mom! There Are Liberals Under My Bed!" reunites gifted storyteller Katharine DeBrecht with award-winning illustrator Jim Hummel for another small lesson in conservatism.
Customer Reviews:
What saddens me most is that the author considers this Christian.......2007-10-04
I'm not sure how any of it fits with Jesus' words, nor how the use of misleading and scandalous "characterizations" can be defended from a Christian theological standpoint. Nor how the many outright lies and misrepresentations of the broad-bush swipes at half (or more) of the population can be faithfully synthesized with the commandment not to bear false witness.
Sad.
Jesus said, "Whatsoever you did to the least of these, you did to me". Hate, fear, lies, and spreading stereotype myths are not what Jesus was asking for.
Neither liberals nor conservatives are evil or good, ipso facto, by "membership" in either group - evil people are evil, and good people are good. Both camps, and all other camps as well, have both types and all types in between in a broad spectrum.
Please, let's stop with pandering myths and lies about the "left". Jesus and all the prophets ask us to speak truth to power, to be honest, and to be just and merciful - I see none of that in this book.
An entertaining follow-up . . . .......2007-06-21
. . . to the first "Help! Mom!" book, taking on the subject of the Hollywood Elite, and their influence on what passes for "pop culture" today.
The heroines of this book learn (the hard way) that following the latest trends to come out of Hollywood is not only futile -- but silly -- and that many of the so-called "Hollywood Elites" do take precisely the attitudes which are parodied in this book.
Not quite as funny as the first book (a not uncommon problem with sequels) but nevertheless well worth the purchase price.
As an aside, the tone of many of the reviews for both this book and its predecessor (to say nothing of the tenor of the comments) makes me want to suggest a follow-up title, to wit: "Help! Mom! The Secular Progressives Have No Sense Of Humor!"
Highly recommended!
An excellent book for all ages........2006-12-27
This book was a gift to my wife and I from a Hollywood actress who has had and still has a great career. She is concerned, like all thinking Americans, with the way we take seriously the hair brained exhortations of the Hollywood left. Sadly too many young people (older ones too) worship at the altar of celebrity and will believe anything that today's generation of uneducated, unwashed and foul mouthed film and music stars spew out on a regular basis. As Laura Ingraham would say, "Shut up and entertain"!
The book is aimed at children, however all ages will love it. It is told in a clever style with great art and it is fun to guess which one of Hollywood's sickos are being satirized. There are lessons here about how none of us should make idols of people who would be homeless today if they didn't have sympathetic liberals running the film and recording studios.
This doesn't mean that there are not excellent actors and actresses and singers in the media who do their jobs faithfully and who love our country and God. They don't get enough publicity. It would be hoped that Hollywood is getting the message as we are getting more family films. Hollywood had to take notice as it has been losing money banking on the so called loud mouthed stars who, like the British once said about us, are over paid, over sexed and over here.
This is a book we want all our grandchildren to read and we will do our part to get it in circulation. May God bless you always Katharine DeBrecht. You tell it like it is.
Please Don't buy this book for your Children.......2006-12-09
This book preaches nothing but hate for people who don't share similar beliefs. It's terrible. I read it at a friend's house who got it as a joke gift. Not only is it offensive...it's nothing short of trying to be excused for public bigotry. What happened to kids' books about caring and loving each other? When did hate become okay? And what about Ronald Reagan? Wasn't he part of liberal Hollywood? Schwarenegger? And yet Britney Spears (a life-long republican) is a great role model as she's running around exposing herself to every available camera in town. People like this are horrible influences on our children (I'm talking about the author).
2nd Help book not as funny.......2006-11-19
I enjoyed the first "Help MOM there are liberals under my bed" - it was witty and short. The second book was too long and bit obscure. I agree with the premise of the book - Hollywood's liberal mentality and the hold they have on our youth is horrible, but this was just not very funny.
I bought the first one as a gift for a couple liberal friends of mine, but I won't do that with this one. Maybe the 9th Circuit book will be better.

Stay Away From This (PS2) Guide, Get The PC Guide Instead.......2004-07-15
This is a review of this product: Grand Theft Auto 3 Official Strategy Guide for PlayStation 2. Amazon may display this review on the page of another version of this product, for which this review may not apply. After reading this review, please click on the link so that you can be assurred that the product this review applies to is the same one you thought it was for.
--------------------------------------------------
This is one of the worst Official strategy guides you could ever buy. Sure it covers all of the missions, but some of them are not covered any more fully than what you get from playing the game itself. It briefly covers SOME of the side jobs and non-mission tasks, but an Official guide should cover ALL of them! There is no detailed information on the Rampages and Unique Jumps, and the Hidden Packages are only covered with a map and short sentence. Some of the other reviewers here go into detail about the deficiencies of this book, so I really don't need to say much more. DON'T BE FOOLED BY THE GOOD REVIEWS THIS BOOK RECEIVED, BECAUSE IT DOESN'T DESERVE THEM.
I own this guide and the one released eight months later for the PC version. Although the PC guide is smaller (but much thicker) and in black & white (there are color maps in the back), it covers EVERYTHING (except cheat codes) about the game and with much more detail. Even if you own the Playstation 2 version of the game, you'd be better off buying the PC guide. The only difference gameplay wise are the controls mentioned in the book and a few little things like rewards for some of the vehicle missions.
To wrap this up, here is an excerpt from the author in the Acknowledgement's section of the PC guide: "Beyond the satisfaction of playing the game a few more times, I was even more delighted to add features to this guide that I didn't have time to include in the PS2 guide. And with Tim Cox's phenomenal assistance, as well as his passion for the game, time was no longer the enemy. We are proud to bring you the most comprehensive Grand Theft Auto III guide in existence." So, that explains why this guide (PS2) sucks. The author was rushed to complete the book, in time for the release of the game, no doubt. Right there in black & white the author of both guides tells you that the PC guide is the most comprehensive guide, and thus the best one. (I have no idea if the X-Box Double Pack guide is based on the PS2 or PC versions, so proceed with caution when getting that one.)
A Good Strategy Guide.......2003-06-26
Grand Theft Auto: Popular, violent, and in need of a strategy guide. A very good strategy guide that gives details about weapons, characters, general tips on things like police and shooting. It gives pictures and good advice on all 73 main missions and the side missions like Taxi Driver and Vigilante. It also gives maps and details on where all 100 packages are. The only flaws are it seems slightly dated with money totals and mission names being different. The other flaw is that the hidden packages are on a map from the game. The problem is the only in-game map is a small circular one in the corner of the screen. Overall, this strategy guide will help you out but you can probably beat Grand Theft Auto 3 without it.
Not near as good as the Vice City guide.......2003-04-28
What can I say. I bought Vice City & the guide before I bought GTA3, the VC guide is really great with lots of info, cool pictures, & lots of helpful stuff.
This one isn't, it is really that simple.
is it worth it? maybe. maybe not........2003-04-10
Grand Theft Auto 3 is a fun game to play. It's not as great as Vice City, but it is still one of the better games out there. But, unlike Vice City, which I enjoyed reading about, GTA3 isn't as much fun to read about. The missions are fairly simple, and there are multiple ways to complete them, so the guide isn't the end all be all that it is in games like Metal Gear. You do get good desriptions of weapons and vehicles. And what I find most valuable are the maps to the hidden treasures, rampages, bribes, armor, life, etc. If you are having trouble completeing the game because you can't find all your hidden treasures and rampages, then this guide will solve your problems.
Video-Gaming Girl.......2003-01-04
Before I go into the review, what you have to understand about the game is that most of the missions have more than one solution (which is one of the best things about the game.) If you think that the guide will give you the only, or even the best, solutions for the missions, you will be disapponted. Besides, the fun part is to come up with your own unique solution, and to learn from your mistakes.
That being said, the book offers some great things. The maps were very helpful, especially for finding rampages, hidden packages, weapons, and other goodies. Also, in certain missions, where getting around quickly is a must, the strategies included maps of where to go and how to get there the most quickly.
I did notice a few bits of wrong information (such as, what time the BF Injection Buggy would be available,) but overall, it's a worthy purchase. Just don't buy it thinking it will solve all of your missions for you.

Great contents and strategies but bad quality printing........2002-12-17
I never have the PS2 version of this book, so I can't compare both version. Just wanted to ammend extra to Dr. Paul C. Graviano reviews, and personal point of view as I never seen the PS2 version.
This book is great, however, I still spotted many mistakes that should be fixed. Some of the hidden packages on the map are marked in wrong location. One of them is on the pier, when I went there but couldn't find it, actually it was on the OTHER pier further up. Some of the hidden packages discription & screenshots are misplaced. Don't rely too much or totally on this guide, use your imagination. it will be much more fun.
I use this guide to help me to locate hidden packages, rampages location, unique stunts, secrets and path for checkpoint-to-checkpoint missions. Which is very handy as reference.
Map arrangement could be improved, I hate to flip for description at the back of the page everytime I needs them. It would be better if the map placed on the left page; description on the right page.
However, the paper quality is kind of bad, which can easily peel off. And due to bad maps arrangement, causes too many flipping front and back vice versa, the pages actually peel off from book, and I actually forget about the main portion as I only need the map ;)
If you are buying this book, make sure you get it stamped before start reading.
By Far the BEST Strategy Guide I have ever read!.......2002-10-03
Okay for anyone who thinks I may be writing an overly kind review, refer to the one I wrote for the Strategy guide for the PS2 version of this game! Needless to say I was somewhat underwhelmed by the book written for GTA 3 for the PS2.
HOWEVER!!! Everything that I conplained about and I mean EVERYTHING that was wrong with the PS2 version strategy guide was addressed and fixed in this version. Apparenly the guy who wrote this book played GTA 3 a lot and it showed in the incredibly detailed and powerfully enthusiastic manner in which the book was written. Where one map would have done okay as in the firt book, he gave you several, all with different colors and excellently labeled icons!
His depiction of mission levels including the Off Road missions (which by the way were all but completely ignored by his predecessor) were written with precision and step by step, easy to follow directions.
One example of the differences in the two books:
Hidden packages map: THe first strategy guide for the PS2 gives a map of each island and a little icon corresponding to the package location, and on the adjacent page a shore sentence telling you where each one is.
In this new book, there are not only maps and FAR MORE detailed explanations of the packages but little thumbnail screenshots showing EVERY package in it's "in game" location! Talk about going the extra mile!!!
While the first attermpt at a strategy guide is more of a glorified hints and tips manual that reads as if it were slapped together after the author went through the game once or twice quickly at most, this book is a bona fide walkthrough of every single facet of the game.
Oh and if you are buying GTA 3 on PS2 and not on the PC? BUY THIS GUIDE ANYWAY! Forget the PS2 version's guide, trust me! You just have to get used to the differences in the control scheme is all. But you will thank me for it later on. Hey if you need the control buttons, the game itself comes with a manual!
In short, while the PS2 guide did have its very limited usage, it becomes all but completely pointless in light of the bigger, better and far more enlightening strategy Guide that was written for the PC, and again this is true even if you only own the PS2 version and have no intention of buying the PC port of the game!
