Download Description
This book constitutes one of the most important contributions to recent Kant scholarship. In it, one of the pre-eminent interpreters of Kant, Henry Allison, offers a comprehensive, systematic, and philosophically astute account of all aspects of Kant's views on aesthetics. The first part of the book analyses Kant's conception of reflective judgment and its connections with both empirical knowledge and judgments of taste. The second and third parts treat two questions that Allison insists must be kept distinct: the normativity of pure judgments of taste, and the moral and systematic significance of taste. The fourth part considers two important topics often neglected in the study of Kant's aesthetics: his conceptions of fine art, and the sublime.
Customer Reviews:
An Excellent Overview of K's CPJ.......2002-08-20
The standard texts on this topic are by Guyer, Barnham, Crawford, and Ginsborg (dissertation). The Guyer text is thorough and rigorous--a quite careful reading and interpretation of the Third Critique--I recommend it along with Allison's recent work. (Allison and Guyer sometimes disagree on important points....)
Allison is an astute and keen defender of Kant (see his Transcendental Idealism/Yale UP). This new book is aptly in line with his best scholarship and cautious reading. I highly recommend it.
Allison's text is divided into four parts. First, he deals with Kant's "Conception of Reflective Judgment," whereby I recommend that you also review B. Longuenesse's book on judgment (Princeton UP). Allison's interpretation here differs from L's, and he clearly states how his view is unique, as well as a more balanced comprehension of the conncetion between the reflective judgment of taste and the epistemic role of reflection.
I daresay, the second part of the book is the most important (Chs. 3-8); it deals with the quid facti/quid juris distinction in the domain of taste. Chs. 6-8 are quite useful, especially ch. 8, which is on "the Deduction of Pure Judgments of Taste." An understanding of this material is crucial to a more certain grasp of K's Third Critique.
Part 3 deals with the connection between judgments of taste and moral judgments. Ch. 10 discusses the mirror-like connection between 'duty' and pure 'aesthetic judgments.'
Part 4 discusses genius and K's notions on sublimity. For specific coverage on this topic, see Crowther on the Kantian Sublime (Oxford UP) in conjunction with this chapter.
A must read for serious scholars of 3rd Critique.......2001-05-01
Allison's book provides a wealth of interesting and semi-interesting arguments on the Critique of Aesthetic Judgment. The book is important in engaging with Guyer and the tradition of analytic aesthetics. It responds to many of the lacunas in Guyer's *Kant's Theory of Taste*, particularly as regards the status of judgments of taste as reflective. However, Allison by no means goes far enough in explaining the import of this status. Those interested in the 3rd Critique are adivsed to get Makkreel's much more readable work if they wish to understand the reflective character of aesthetic judgments, including their contribution to reflective interpretation. Also, Allison at times goes too far in attacking Guyer, leaving Guyer able to readily deal with many of Allison's points, and thereby continue his own critique of Kant.

Book Description
Customer Reviews:
Spot on tongue-in-cheek guidebook for prepsters of any age!.......2007-07-19
Lisa Birnbach's The Official Preppy Handbook was certainly equal parts light-hearted ribbing and serious. Growing up in Atlanta and vacationing on Sea Island and Hilton Head, the information in this book was more real than, I suspect, Birnbach ever intended. Although the book more accurately chronicled North Eastern prep life, it fairly accurately represented Southern preps.
Now with prep coming back into popularity, albeit not quite to the level it once held in the 80's, The Official Preppy Handbook just may be derigeur once again. Companies like Vinyard Vines have appeared and old standards such as Lacoste have certainly seen a resurgence.
When I met Ms. Birnbach at a book signing, she regaled those in line with quips and charm and said she was more than amazed that Southern prep was so much more colorful than Northern preps.
If you can grab a copy of this fine, fun book, I would encourage you to do so.
And remember Ms. Birnbach's statement about what should be hanging from every prep's rear view mirror still holds true today: "Nothing! Absolutely nothing!"
Not just a way to dress but a lifestyle.......2007-05-18
No, I did not go to boarding school, or an elite day school, but I was able to bs my way into Hobart and William Smith Colleges (one of the exceptional schools for demonstrations of prep-dom). Let me simply say that this is as true now as it was when it was written. As a person who can admit to wearing topsiders to class and going for a sail on lake seneca this book is a well written, brilliant and hillarious look at the way prep-culture has been since its inception. A great read for prep's who do not take themselves too seriously and those who wish a little glimpse into the world of WASP culture. I will never look at my lacoste polo or searsucker shorts the same way again...
From a Hampden-Sydney Man.......2006-10-19
In the fall, freshmen acquired the L.L. Bean catalogs of the men who'd graduated in the previous spring; the expectation was that the tradition would continue. As an alumnus (1990) from one of the nation's preppiest colleges, I have to say that this book is spot on. Birnbach captures the spirit of the aforementioned anecdote. The traditions of the Preppy are enduring, and the style never dies.
definately THE handbook.......2006-07-25
Though some of the clothing examples are slightly outdated (preppy girls don't wear long skirts anymore ,just go to Abercrombie or J.Crew and take a look, and the SUV has replaced the station wagon), most of this book is so dead on its not even funny. Going to prep school, I look back with pride and honor at this book. Its really a collectors item, and even more preppy beacuse it is out of print!
Meticulous Look at Preppy Life.......2005-08-02
This book written in 1980 says that the Preppy outlook is timeless. As a non-prep, I can't vouch for all the features, but as for clothes and jobs it still holds true. Putting aside all the details in this book (which are many) is a certain "je n'est ce what the f*ck" unique to the preppy worldview that this author has revealed.
As for clothes, J.Crew 25 years later still features the same Fair Isle sweaters, the hot pink and lime green striped grosgrain belts, the loud print skirts (small prints are considered "ditsy"), and the embroidered repeating motifs on pants. All of these things that I just thought were... ugly, actually are quintessential preppy style.
As for jobs, the 2004 movie Born Rich by the Johnson & Johnson heir was made by interviewed his 20 something peers and their careers match up with those in the book: stockbroker, investment banker, art dealer, rare-book dealer (a career suggested by the filmmaker's father) and ne'er-do-well. The book covers additional career ideas such as account executive at an ad agency, editor, tennis pro, philanthropist and carpenter (PhD in philosophy preferable for the latter).
The information in this book covers every stage of preppy life from childhood to the country club years. Attention to lifestyle is paramount and this book lives up to the task by including the well bred preppy home complete with duck prints, french windows, liquor in large sized bottles and a silver cigarette box (prize for 1965 Labor Day regatta).
Prep schools themselves are covered (including the importance of getting kicked out) as are colleges. Harvard, alas, is not as prep as the ivy would imply because they often select students on academic achievement which provides for a less exclusive environment.
Middle class people often see college as a place to build a career and partying is considered recreation, but for the prep (who already has established inroads into a career due to family connections) the partying is social networking of the highest order. The social life is important and "beeritory confinement" is a bonding experience that lasts a lifetime through the later corridors of power.
Both George W. Bush and John Kerry were in Yale's secret Skull & Bones society which is covered briefly in the book along with other good college clubs. *note to self, join the A's*
All kidding aside, this is a great little book jam packed with information.

Genius.......2005-04-23
This is an example of what a good book should be: timeless, very ironic, and funny. It's hard for a description of a social group to be accurate 25 years after it was written, but this book does that easily. By the way, I'm not a Prep, but have gained greater understanding of their behavior. Interesting.
Euro prepski.......2003-05-26
I adore this book. I grew up preppy, was a preppy at university, turned my back on preppyhood for a while but went back to my roots and are raising two preppy's now myself. Preppy's are the same all over the world (I live in the Netherlands. Let's hope they never change.
LOVE THE BOOK- and you can get a copy too!.......2003-02-22
I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this book. It's so great. I laughed, I related- it's just awesome. I wanted a copy and got one. I went to ebay! They actually have a first edition hardcover copy of the Handbook for a pretty decent price. Check it out! Every true preppy at heart needs this!
I was horrified!.......2002-10-10
I heard that the preppy look was coming back into style, and was told to find a copy of this book. I read this book and laughed so hard I cried. I grew up with these people, I was one of these people... I am still one of these people. I even wrote to an old pal from prep school... and told her she had to read it too! If this ever comes back into print, I will buy a case to hand it out to everyone I know.
The Very Best.......2000-08-16
Two years ago I found this book is a small shop in Morro Bay, I read it and loved it. This is a Bible for me and I now realize that all my life I have been a prep. I found another copy at the same store this year and gave it to my sister. The book is timeless and absolutely hilarious. I recommend it to anyone who wants a great laugh and also to those who want to live the "preppy" lifestyle. It is a wonderful book that makes a great gift. I am sad that it is out of print.

About This Movie
Before Austin Powers and Dr. Evil, there was Wayne and Garth, one of the more successful "Saturday Night Live" sketches to be parlayed into a feature film. The stars of this comedy about a pair of friends with their own local public access show have indelibly made their mark on popular culture with the catchphrase "Excellent!" and "Party On!"
The creator of this book, Dave Cutler, is an award-winning freelance artist. His images have appeared in leading publications and corporate literature for 18 years. His fascination for moviemaking began as a little boy and continues today. He's also published a children's book titled, `When I Wished I Was Alone,' Oct. 2003.
The publisher, GreyCore Press, says "This book is the first in a unique series of picture-based trivia books that use great b & w and color photographs to test reader's knowledge of their favorite entertainment pastimes." Their next in the series will be PICTURES TRIVIA: SPORTS EDITION, scheduled to release in 2005.
My Rating
*Quality - excellent
*Style of presentation and authenticity of facts, sources, etc. - excellent
*Ability to prove points - excellent
*Target audience or age group - anyone, especially movie buffs of all ages.
*Usage - easily used as a game for one or more.
Cutler's trivia book is a treat for those bitten by the movie madness bug. A playful way to test movie knowledge and memory. Perfect on a coffee table, a desk, or as a gift.

Book Description
Shadows of tomorrow
from the past are sown. On shifting sands and sorrows,
veiled in mist or set in stone....
Paige Matthews is accustomed to the requirements of her job as a social worker, and she's willing to endure substandard pay, long hours, and emotional drain. After all, she wants to make a difference -- sometimes in a non-Charmed capacity. But she is unprepared for the anger and rage she encounters in Todd Corman, a young boy who has been bounced from caregiver to caregiver for so long that he doesn't trust authority. Still, Paige is sympathetic and determined to break through.
But when Phoebe stops by the agency for a quick hello, she is rocked by a vision that involves Todd. Strangely, the vision is shrouded in fog. After some investigation, Leo explains that this particular mist has nothing to do with the weather, but rather suggests that Todd's fate may not be set in stone. Todd has been targeted, and if the Charmed Ones are going to reverse destiny, they're going to have to race against the clock!

Mist and Stone.......2007-01-11
I really enjoyed it. It sticks very close to the TV episode.
very similar in writing style and ending to "Spirit of the wolf".......2005-12-03
What I meant is, (in my opinion, that is) that both books are similar in the fact that the real action only occurs at the last few pages of the book, the rest being planning, ideas, solutions and other minor incidences. Personally, I found the whole "Mist and stone" effect confusing and hard to wrap my mind around it. But the plot was intriguing enough, just the ending was a tad disappointment. But an average read, overall.
mist and stone.......2004-06-03
a must have for all charmed fans it takes you further into paiges life before she was charmed with one of the main characters being connected to paiges social worker job than her charmed one (both do end up mixing of course)
the plot i wont reveal but it's different to anything before with a few twist and turns in there to overall a good read even if your not a charmed fan
Extremely Disappointed!.......2004-02-13
I've got every Charmed book out there and I have to say that this is the worst one to date. It was so boring and hard to get through. Whew! If you're an avid collector of Charmed books like I am, by all means, get it, but don't be surprised to find that this doesn't pass the grade.
I think the authors are now trying to churn books out as fast as possible to make a buck and they and their editors don't care about good stories.
very good charmed book.......2003-05-18
paige is trying to plae a boy who has been nothing but trouble in all of his foster homes. the only options are a group home or juvenille corrections. after much persuasion she gets him in the group home. but when pheobe has a premonition linking the boy to a darklighter, the witches race against time to figure out the mystery and to save one they love. this was an excellent book. but then most that are written by gallagher usually are. this is one that is set in a more adult mood than some of the previously ones where us adults get the impression that you should not read the books if you are over the age of 12. happy reading.

A swell book from a new author.......2006-01-05
This book is lively and engaging. The author is able to put together an unlikely combination of cultures and spin a page-turning historical tale replete with fascinating detail and images. It's a great read: swift, entertaining, poetic, at turn humorous and gory. I highly recommend it.
Quite an astonishing historical survey.......2005-11-18
I read a dozen books a month, but this swift, slim volume captured my attention immediately and never let it go. George Stone thoughtfully and economically reviews centuries of Celtic and Nordic cultural development, touching on the emergence of these "barbarian" peoples and tracking their countless accomplishments as they made their way across Europe and around the world. Celts in Iceland? Vikings in the Middle East? America discovered ages before Columbus? Warp spasms, silver hoards, Tolkien? The breadth of this book is simply astonishing. The author's use of literary genius, from Greek and Roman records (including notes by Strabo and Caesar) to Celtic and Nordic epics and sagas adds richness and incomparable depth to this wondrously illustrated volume. The National Geographic Society-and the title's young author-are to be commended. This is the best book I've read all year.
Book Description
Haunting and evocative Celtic tunes from Ireland, Scotland, the Isle of Man and Galicia, featuring hammered dulcimer with Celtic harp, violin, pennywhistle, concertina, cittern and bodhran. NAIRD INDIE finalist for "Best Celtic Album of the Year". The companion hammered dulcimer book includes 22 dazzling solos, rich and varied in texture, capturing the energy and spirit of Celtic music.

Still one of the best fantasy gaming worlds........2006-09-01
The Living Greyhawk Gazetteer (LGG hereafter) is the latest incarnation of one of the very first published roleplaying campaign settings. Initially released in the early 1980s, Greyhawk had its start as the homebrew setting of Dungeons & Dragons co-creator E. Gary Gygax and was the primal stomping ground from which many of the game's most distinctive offbeat tropes emerged.
How does this venerable setting hold up after more than twenty-five years? Remarkably well, all things considered.
Before we proceed any further, however, into what the LGG is, I want to make it very clear what it is not:
1. The LGG is not a "crunchy" book. This alone sets it apart from not only most other D&D products, but most other roleplaying books period. The LGG contains not one single new prestige class, spell, feat, magic item, or monster. In fact, it also doesn't include statistics for any of the various NPCs mentioned throughout the text. Not a one. The writers had only 192 pages to work with and apparently chose to forsake such things entirely in favor of packing the LGG to the gills with details on history, cultures, politics, theology, and geography. Whether this is a strength or a weakness is up to you. Personally, as someone who enjoys D&D-style games without D&D-style rules, I found this virtually systemless format to be ideal for use with other rulesets.
2. The LGG is not a pretty book. Despite beautiful cover art, the LGG is far from pleasing to the eye overall. Moreover, it's softcover, a turn-off for some.
3. While the LGG does present the framework of a great campaign, there is no attempt made to match the sheer level of minute detail present in settings like Forgotten Realms and Kingdoms of Kalamar. Rather, the LGG's focus is on the big picture: Gods, geography and broad national and ethnic divisions. If you want a setting that details every little rut in the backroads, Greyhawk is simply not it. As someone who specifically doesn't want a world with a "canon" answer to everthing and few real mysteries and spaces left to fill-in myself, this aspect appeals to me. In the end, there's no right answer. It all comes down to how much setting detail is not enough for you, how much is too much, and how much is just right.
4. Greyhawk is not "fresh", "new", or "out there." As the original home of most of the classic Gygaxian D&D tropes, Greyhawk doesn't feature the clever (and often more than a little subversive) takes on them that defined such settings as Spelljammer and Planescape. If you still enjoy thoroughly "vanilla" D&D-style gaming, Greyhawk may be the world for you. If you don't, keep looking.
Now that the disclaimers are out of the wat, there's a lot I like about the World of Greyhawk.
Firstly, it has a nice feel to it. While not truly "dark fantasy" like, say, Ravenloft or Midnight, Greyhawk has a very gritty, dangerous tone about it. True strongholds of good are few and far between and there's a real sense that the only reason evil hasn't overwhelmed the entire continent yet is because its various factions don't work together too well.
To borrow an old cliche, there's a lot of "gray" in Greyhawk. The city of Rel Astra is ruled by a reanimated corpse and his advisor, a two-headed demon. The people don't seem to mind, though, because while technically "evil", he's also a damn fine mayor. Greyhawk is just the kind of world where evil guys sometimes make better landlords.
Another good example is the Theocracy of the Pale, a nation run by clerics of the Lawful Good god Pholtus. Sounds like a nice place, right? Wrong. Turns out that Pholtus is a great guy...as long as you happen to believe that his way is the One True Way. Disagree and you'll be handed over to the Inquisition before you know it. Bad times. In fact, the Pale would be much more likely to unite with a band of Lawful Evil Hextorians to wipe out some Chaotic Good elves than vice-versa, as disorder and lack of respect for Law are much more offensive to their stern god than Evil. Overall, only the Planescape setting does a better job supporting the oft-neglected Law-Neutrality-Chaos axis of the D&D alignment system.
All this adds up to a lot of potenial angles a good GM can work. A group with a hankering for a straightforward Tolkien-style "stop the Big Bad Evil Guy" campaign can be pitted against Iuz. One that wants more politics and less "Good versus Evil" can choose beween a number of good or neutral nations that go to war all the time over the very same religious, ethnic, nationalistic, or economic pretenses that abound in our own history. One that just wants to ignore the big picture altogether in favor of rooting around in dungeons is well-provided for, as well.
Furthermore, Greyhawk has virtually no major NPC heroes in its canon. Most of the good NPCs described in the book are rulers. As politicians, they can't just grab a sword and march off to slay orcs. The closest thing the setting has to "iconic NPCs" are the various mages of the Circle of Eight, but they're far from do-gooders. In fact, thier philosophy of militant neutrality makes them just as likely to oppose a PC group as help one on its way. This is bound to appeal to gamers disillusioned with settings like Forgotten Realms where dozens of esablished crusading superhero NPCs can sometimes make PC heroes feel unneeded. Overall, the abundance of evil and lack of super-competent NPC adventurers combines to paint Greyhawk as a world badly in need of heroes, and not just any heroes, but your PCs. I dig that.
Finally, Greyhawk has a comfy "lived-in" feel that any old D&D veteran can appreciate. Vecna hails from here, as do Mordenkainen, Tenser, and a host of other famous names from the dawn of fantasy roleplaying. Not to mention places like the Temple of Elemental Evil, the Tomb of Horrors, and the Barrier Peaks and legendry artifacts like the Rod of Seven Parts and the Orbs of Dragonkind. More than any other setting I can think of, Greyhawk has a profound sense of glorious history.
Overall, I heartily recommend the LGG. Despite a few nagging problems like poor interior art, the lack of an index, and little attention paid to nonhuman gods, the world itself is a compelling and believable one with a great deal of flexability and character. If "vanilla" D&D is your idea of a good time, this oldie is still a goodie.
Changing the Perception of Our Attitudes, Living the Greyhawk Campaign........2006-03-22
A gentleman writes about his concern over Wizards of the West Coast decision to turn over Greyhawk to the RPGA. The major focus of his review was for the most part positive. He cited the authors devotion to detail for each of the countries and expressed his admiration over such detail concerns as Orc populations in a particular region.
The Gazateer, to me, represents an ongoing creative impetus began by those wily Wizards of the West Coast, that has caught on so well that many, many, many volumes and texts now exist describing events in the Greyhawk setting. I like the adherance to what the game was all about, campaigning over vast expanses of territory and encountering diverse situations. I also like the idea that if this campaign setting were turned over to the RPGA, the possibilities and potential for growth and expansion in each of the character core classes would be limitless. Having a real world wide organization handle the duties of gathering information and bring in new and prospective players to the Greyhawk setting takes a great deal of the work out of the game for players and Dungeon Masters alike and puts the fun back into role playing.
I enjoy reading the Gazette from my own home town. It keeps me in touch with others in the community, as well as informed about events that occur around the world. What a great way to chronicle events in an imaginary world where real individuals and groups participate to play out fictional characters, storylines, and events.
Indeed it does happen to be refreshing that Greyhawk has remained true to its principles, even to the point of having minimal room for such classes as ninjas. Great work guys, keep it up! Patrick Driscoll, Admirer of the Greyhawk Lineage.
Highly Recommended!.......2005-04-10
This is an excellent sourcebook for a number of reasons. First of all, it focuses very strongly on the organizations, heroes, and villains that make the wheels in this dynamic campaign setting turn. For that alone, it is an excellent resource for Dungeon Masters. Second, while it centers on stories, it is light on rules, giving the Dungeon Master the uptmost flexibility for running his campaign when deciding what to allow and what not to allow. Finally, it is a quite compelling read. You'll find yourself immersed in the lore of the Ur-Flan, delving into the mysteries that keep the Silent Ones of Keoland so silent, amused by the bickering of the gods, and delighted by the heroic exploits of organizations like the Circle of the Eight and the Knights of the Holy Shielding. This is a must-have for any D&D fan. If you're a long-time fan of Greyhawk, you'll happily reminesce of days gone past while seeing what your favorite heroes and villains have been up to. If you're new to the setting, you'll find yourself in a world full of life, vigor, and rich history the likes of which will leave you thirsting for adventure.
Mona and Holian are spot on........2003-08-31
In the long history of the Greyhawk canon there are many books that shine, and this is no exception. The writing duo of Mona and Holian is simply brilliant; they approach the matter of Greyhawk with the utmost care, detailing every aspect of change over the last twenty years and proving what a deeply engrossing world Greyhawk truly is. You'll spend many hours enjoying this book. Let's hope for another Greyhawk release soon.
