Book Description
Contemporary graphic designers, particularly those who have grown up with the computer, are re-discovering the creative potential of letterpress as a medium. Letterpress has unique visual and tactile impact, thanks to its physical presence on the page, and offers a powerful means of expressing ideas through a more thoughtful and intelligent use of type.
Despite the dominance of computer typesetting and printing in trade publishing, new, private letterpress publishers are on the increase. This timely book celebrates the diversity of the original work being produced by graphic designers and typographers using letterpress around the world.
The book examines US and European private presses, top international graphic designers working with letterpress, the use of letterpress as a commercial medium in developing countries, and new developments in letterpress technology.
It is designed to support the trend for non-computer design techniques now enjoying a period of new growth and reinvention.
Customer Reviews:
great stuff for printers & aficionados alike.......2004-08-17
not so much a technical manual but more an overview of contemporary use of letterpress, both as artform and a technique that works well in tandem with digital technology.. excellent photos & jury's writing is clear & concise. certainly worth the price.

The Missing Reel.......2000-06-20
Interesting to consider that Thomas A. Edison could have been so consumed with the need to succeed that he may have had industrial espionage agents steal the prototype of and plans for the first practical movie projector from its inventor, Augustin La Prince, as the author suggests...

"A is for Amy who fell down the stairs. B is for Basil assaulted by bears. C is for Clara who wasted away. D is for Desmond thrown out of a sleigh..." The rhyming couplets of this grim abecedarian are familiar, of course, to devotees of macabre humor, but the darkly crosshatched drawings are (as Poe put it) "the soul of the plot." Several years went by during which The Gashlycrumb Tinies: Or, After the Outing was not available in a small hardcover edition like this one, which is the true format for Edward Gorey's specialty, the adult picture book. (For those who wish to share the gloom there's a 10-copy assortment with The Curious Sofa.)
Book Description
A new, small-format edition of one of Gorey’s “dark masterpieces of surreal morality” (Vanity Fair) - a witty, disquieting journey through the alphabet.
Customer Reviews:
gorey.......2007-09-01
being an avid Ed Gorey fan it was nice to get a new copy of one of my favorites
ghoulish delight.......2007-08-23
as expected, this was a sickly-sweet, twisted little gem - i wish there could be more!
morbid alphabet.......2007-07-27
disguised as a children's read, this little book shows all the ways little people could die, from A to Z.
I expected the artwork to look like the cover page but they are all black and white. He uses pen for all the illustrations, achieving many values and textures with lines, stripes, various patterns and predominately crosshatching. It's cute.
Best use of the word "ennui".......2007-07-01
A twisted, strange, lovely alphabet that shows Edward Gorey at his macabre best. I give one of these books to every friend I meet who understands my own bizarre sense of humor. Edward Gorey rules!
Now don't get me wrong...........2007-06-07
I like all of Gorey's work. The stories are simply worded and have a feeling of every word in its place. The art at a first glance also seems rather simple in an intriguing way, the you look closer and the tiny lines drag you in the rest of the way.
I think for many people, Edward Gorey is a love him or hate him thing. You either find it very amusing or just plain sickening nonsense. I happen to be of the former. I do have some trouble with some of his stories (that dang statue book...) because I find them somewhat....pointless. This book, however, is one of the more comprehensible, if also one of the most simple in premise.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone who appreciates a bit of "dark humor" now and again. But, really, unless your kid is pretty tough, don't read it as a bedtime story until they are old enough to really understand that it's not real. If you must introduce them to Gorey at a young and tender age, go pick up a copy of The Epiplectic Bicycle (My other favorite E.G. book) or one of his more nonsensical books. Don't give your kid nightmares.

As the New York Times writes of Edward Gorey, "His satires (often of tawdry Victorian mysteries) are not mere commentaries on the manners and mores of a distant age; they are inventive narratives about evil adults, mischievous children, illicit lovers and improbable beasts." Or, in the case of The Curious Sofa, improbable furniture. As Gorey tells us on the cover, this is "a pornographic work" (pornographic horror, in fact) with a picture on every page. And yet there's nary a nipple (nor a drop of blood) in sight. (For those who want some extras to pass around there's a 10-copy assortment with The Gashlycrumb Tinies.)
Book Description
Gorey’s naughty, hilarious travesty of lust-now reissued in a special gift edition. “A master of the genre of graphic storytelling and a brilliant draftsman” (New York Times Book Review).
Customer Reviews:
For People Who Like to Read Too Much Into Everything.......2007-05-13
Well honestly, I fully enjoyed where the book allowed my imagination to roam, until the very end. By the end I was terrified. I guess Gorey really has a knack at providing us with doorways into our own minds. Also, I suppose a child could read this and still have no idea what the hell was going on (who does know?). There'd just be that question of why people were having a party naked (although cleverly covered by way the author's own unique sense of arrangement). Truely a book any Gorey lover MUST add to their collection.
Dark humor and delightful drawings.......2007-05-07
...with a large splash of innuendo, this book has content that is more adult in nature, but still clever and amusing - although those who buy it because of the title will be disappointed.
Disappointing for a Recently Initiated Gorey Fan.......2007-03-09
I admit, the only other Edward Gorey work I have read was "The Gashliecrumb (sp?) Tinies", which I found devilishly hysterical, but this one just left me cold. It was full of amateurish double entendres that lacked the subtlety to make them fun. Instead he just repeatedly referred to the unusual endowment of the male characters. All in all, not at all recommended.
An original and admirable work, but not entirely typical of Gorey.......2006-03-22
THE CURIOUS SOFA: A Pornographic Work by Ogdred Weary is one of Edward Gorey's works in which the story is told through delightful pen-and-ink drawings with witty captions. A 1961 send-up of Victorian pornography, the book's thirty pages tell the adventures of Alice, a young woman swept into a long series of sexual adventures. THE CURIOUS SOFA's cleverness lies in that on one hand it reveals nothing obscene--one would hardly have to fear if a young child came upon the book. A good example caption is: "Downstairs the three of them played a most amusing game of Herbert's own invention called 'Thumbfumble.' They then sat down to a sumptuous tea", which is accompanied by an entirely innocuous drawing. Yet, for the adult the book is ultimately the most filthiest thing this reader has ever encountered outside of some Cocteau Twins lyrics.
The artwork of THE CURIOUS SOFA is rather spartan: generally just characters and furniture against a white background. It resembles more his first work THE UNSTRUNG HARP than the later works of the 1960s that became typical for him: Edwardian figures with beards and lots of fur coats.
This is an entertaining work, and Gorey does masterfully show that, paradoxically, sometimes horrors and obscenities can be maximally revealed through being concealed. However, I would not recommend it to the Gorey neophyte, as it is not the best example of his work. Instead, try THE LOATHSOME COUPLE or THE BLUE ASPIC. THE OTHER STATUE is also good. Those are all books from his most fruitful style of the late 1960s and highly recommended reading. Save this one for if you've come to enjoy Gorey.
Volume Eleven Of The "Encyclopedia Of Unimaginable Customs".......2004-11-21
In a typically odd work by Edward Gorey, the protagonist, Alice, gets her eyes opened to many new experiences by companions of various sorts (including Colonel Gilbert and his wife Louise, both of whom have wooden legs, and Donald, a sheepdog). All these new activities are strangely suggestive, but not what most people would actually call pornographic; after all, the book is only illustrated with Gorey's discreet little drawings.
The sofa itself is contained in a room lined in polar bear fur, is upholstered in scarlet velvet, and has nine legs and seven arms; when the machinery starts within it Alice shudders and the book concludes in a delightfully ambiguous manner, in what may well be one of the strangest endings of any of Gorey's books.
I like Gorey, and this is a good little book, but is not actually one of my favorites, as I think there are others more whimsical, and a few are even stranger. For Gorey lovers this is a great little book, but understand that it is quite small, which makes it a questionable value, particularly in light of the excellent compilations available.

Book Description
In this twentieth-anniversary millennial edition, Kolker continues and expands his inquiry into the cinematic representation of culture by updating and revising the chapters on the directors discussed in the first edition--Stanley Kubrick, Martin Scorsese, Robert Altman, and Steven Spielberg--to include their most important works since 1988, analyzing those films which have made important advances in the directors' careers and which have given cause for rethinking the films that preceded them. Included is a profile of Arthur Penn's career followed by a new comparative study of Oliver Stone, who mirrors Penn's practice of drawing his films out of historical and ideological currents. Placing the films of Penn, Stone, Kubrick, Scorsese, Spielberg, and Altman in an ideological perspective, Kolker both illuminates their relationship to one another and to larger currents in our culture, and emphasizes the statements their films make about American society and culture. This edition includes a new preface, a requiem for Stanley Kubrick, updated filmography, and 48 images from various films discussed through the text.
Customer Reviews:
Smart, exhaustive, pretentious, engaging.......2001-01-04
Kolker's lengthy opinions sometimes suffer from tunnel-vision -- ideas that support his over-arching theories are stressed while other influnces on/aspects of the films are ignored. But his over-arching theories are penetrating nevertheless, and a lot of light is shed on the filmmakers he discusses. His treatment of Kubrick, whose work lends itself so well to intelluctual deconstruction, is especially good. The discussion of Spielberg is interesting but a little too high-minded for the relatively simple pleasures of Spielberg's movies. Most interesting of all are the author's comparisons of the filmmakers with each other, the culture of their times, and various narrative forms and goals. (Kubrick fans should also check out Michael Herr's "Kubrick", which reveals a human side to the legendarily chilly and cerebral director).
One of the best books about post-studio system U.S. cinema.......2000-07-18
Although I missed the very first edition of this book in 1980, its second edition has been among my favorite film books for a decade. This is despite the fact that most of the film-makers discussed within (especially Scorsese & Altman) had made numerous films since the last ones featured in that edition. Now I have the joyful experience of catching up on their films with one of the finest writers on the topic of American film ever and his third edition of one of the finest books on American film ever published.
Kolker has gone back to his earlier editions and used the newer films to both confirm and refute his earlier evaluations. Many fans of film in general (and some of these directors, in particular) will not agree with many of Kolker's points. What makes this book so wonderful, though, is that you don't have to agree to enjoy it. Kolker understands that film criticism is meant to be a lively art, rather than a process of emalming great works of art. I may not agree with his assessment of each Scorsese picture but his analysis of Scorsese's significance is right on the money. At the same time, his newly added discussion of Oliver Stone is the first writing about the controversial director that gave a fair picture of his artistic strengths (there are many) and weaknesses (fewer but still significant).
Deserving of special note is the book's section on the late Stanley Kubrick. Kubrick's passing makes him the only film-maker in the book whose body of work is completely finished, a matter which Kolkee addresses in a special epitaph. It is indicative of both the quality and bold approach of the book that the author uses Kubrick's final film, "Eyes Wide Shut" as a springboard to ponder how Kubrick's work will fit into the history of cinema in the years to come. He does not make pat, easy judgements but rather admits that the still vital medium is ever shifting and even old works can take on new meanings in hindsight. It's almost enough to make me eager for the fourth edition.

Through unrestricted access to Mark Eitzel himself, former band members, associates and friends, Sean Body has built up a portrait of an artist tortured by his own demons, yet redeemed by the aching beauty of his songs."Wish The World Away is an insightful quote-drenched post-mortem on a band who recorded a slew of unbearably moving records before getting chewed up by the music biz machine."-Uncut Magazine
Customer Reviews:
Wish this book away? or Now THAT'S self-destructive.......2004-02-27
Pros: Great facts and research are here. Vudi's hippie parents living in the hills, Mark's sister listening to him strum from outside his bedroom door, Tom Mallon on the floor, splicing Mark's vocals by hand to get them to match the beat.
Cons: English people seem to miss the point about AMC. On the page, the music sounds merely deep and beautiful. It seems to lack complexity, humor, irony, or edge for the English. Also, I don't need a blow by blow of every concert! Help! Cut them out! Basta! Enough! We also don't get to learn about any of the musicology of what makes Eitzels song's so great.
Best quote: "AMC signed nearly every contract and piece of paper ever put in front of them"...Now THAT'S self distructive! That outdoes Hammer of the Gods or Up and Down with the Rolling Stones for sure...
If only moments: Everclear is not released as AMC's first major label record. That dude produces Mercury and it sounds like the backing track to an NPR story. Help!
An artist this original deserves better..........2001-02-12
First off, I am a huge fan of Mark Eitzel and AMC, so that's not an issue. I was excited to read this book because I was a late convert to the music and was looking forward to catching up on the story I'd missed behind the band I dug. Body's culling together of reviews and interviews is admirable, and the depth of factual research in general is impressive. Die-hard AMC/Eitzel fans aren't going to be able NOT to appreciate the concentration of information here.
My reservations about the book deal with the telling of the story; I really don't think there's much surprising or new in here. Body insists that--and quotes others' insisting that--Eitzel is "one of the greatest living songwriters," but he doesn't really try to test the whys and hows of this claim beyond uttering the normal platitudes about touching deep common emotional chords. But every review of every AMC/Eitzel album has already told us that.
Slightly more off-putting was...how shall I call it?...a disturbing textual relationship between Body's work and some of his source material. I'll cite one example. As Body describes Eitzel's recorded solo show in 1991 (that ended up as "Songs of Love Live"), "People called out for requests contantly, mouthed the words to songs, and generally revelled in what felt like a semi-religious event; part stand-up comedy, part theatre, part concert and part revivalist meeting" (103). Compare Andrew Smith's review of the concert, reprinted in the CD's liner notes: "Tonight, the atmosphere in the Borderline was like a cross between a revivalist gospel service, an intimate jazz club and a pantomime. People called for songs, mouthed the words, even commented on them between numbers..." What's going on here? I understand that re-creating concerts one might not have attended could be a difficult proposition, but a little more gracious disclosure as to the origin of the description might be warranted in this case. I'm almost afraid to look at the other reviews that might have been consulted in the writing of the book.
If you want the history of AMC, you'll get it. The sound bites from Eitzel alone are practically worth the price of the book. I was just a little disappointed, after finishing "Wish the World Away," that a book about an artist so unafraid of picking at his own wounds seemed to pull up short of considering some of the harder questions in a fresh way.
A biography that does justice to its subject matter........1999-07-05
Mark Eitzel is an exceptionally talented songwriter and performer, not to mention a complex, intriguing human being who, as this book shows, has occasionally been his own worst enemy. Sean Body's excellent biography of Eitzel and American Music Club gives insight into a wonderful band who were critically lauded and publicly ignored, and a music industry that simply didn't seem to know what to do with them. Despite the absence of a happy ending, this remains a curiously uplifting story, told with grace by an author who clearly understands and respects his subject matter. Highly recommended.
Insightful Look At One Of The Greatest Rock Bands Ever.......1999-05-04
For the uninitiated, American Music Club, and its frontman Mark Eitzel gathered a cult status throughout the '80s and into the '90s when they split. Happily, Eitzel is still creating music of unnatural beauty. This is a great book for the Eitzel/AMC buff, or for those at the beginning of a wonderful musical journey. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

A Halo Fan.......2006-03-05
I agree with "A Reader" I bought this book thinking I could use it to get on top of levels, get infinite ammo, etc. What I got was some pretty useless guides for Halo 1 and 2, plus a bunch of what felt like ads. If you're a die-hard Halo fan, this book might be worth buying, but otherwise I would advise steering clear of it.
Secrets of Halo 2.......2005-10-24
Secrets of Halo 2 is a bit misleading because of its title. It doesn't really have any "secrets", but it does have complete walkthroughs of both Halo 1 & 2. It also has recommendations for other games inside, such as Half-Life and Doom 3. Overall, it is an ok book, especially if you are a Halo fan.
Save your money, and avoid buying this book!.......2005-09-30
Ok, so I figured that a book called "Secrets of Halo 2" might be cool, and show me some secrets that I haven't found yet (there are a lot out there). Instead what I got was this piece of ....
First off, out of the whole book, only about 6 pages are actually about Halo 2, and those are just a walkthrough of campaign. The rest of the book contains a history of first person shooters, and, get this, hints and cheats for OTHER games. If I wanted to know about Half Life 2, I would have bought a book on Half Life 2. Oh, and for those really old school fans, there's a quick walkthrough of Halo as well.
Even if I knew what this book was going to be, I would say avoid it. It has more crappy screenshots, and over used strategies (example: Remember that you can duel wield in Halo 2), then you can shake a stick at.
Avoid buying this book. Save your money for Halo 3.

how we almost die.........2003-05-26
this is such a great book it explains all of the medical procedures we see on ER. It takes a scene of Er and explains what would happen if ER was real. From reading the book i learned, all of the prices of the medical procedures, what a medical student does, all of the things a doctor does(resident, intern etc)
bottom line: This is a great book even if you have never seen the show and want to learn about medicine...plus its and easy read.
Great book.......2002-01-02
If you like the show ER, you'll like this book especially if you're interested in th technical aspects of it. The way the book combines the show "ER" with reality is great. The characters in ER pertained to when the book was written so it's like the season 2 cast I believe. Anyway, it's a great book that is definitely worth reading. I read it last year (I was 13) and it gave me a great insight into the reality of an ER and how TV isn't always true.
UndERated.......2001-03-31
I think that the authors of this book really outdid themselves with this one. Having worked in a busy ER for sometime now, it is interesting to hear/see the ideas and beliefs of patients that they have learned my watching medical drama shows like "ER" and such. I wish that hospitals everywhere would buy millions of copies of this book and have them laminated and secured with metal cable to the chairs in the ER waiting area. The authors really "hit the nail on the head" with this piece. It pays omage to the millions of men and women who work their fingers to the bone in the ER's around the world. This book is a must for any students wanting to pursue a career in any field of emergency medicine.
Incredible Book.......1999-06-11
I loved this book! I'm a die-hard ER fan, and I just wish that I'd found it sooner. It explains almost everything medical on ER from what a resident does to what the heck a crit is! Now I know what's happening on my favourite show!
This is a very informative book!.......1999-01-25
If you have ever wondered what all of that medical jargon meant when you watched ER, this is the book for you!! It tells what everythting means. It even gives episode summaries of the shows most gripping episodes, and then tells the medical procedures that were done on that episode, and how they were performed. In my opinion, this is the best ER book out there.
