Discarded valentines. Ransom notes. To-do lists. Diaries. Homework assignments. A break-up letter written on the back of an airsickness bag. Whether they are found on buses, at stores, in restaurants, waiting rooms, parking lots, or even prison yards, these items give readers an uncensored, poignant, and often hilarious peek into other people's lives. By collecting them in his hit magazine, Found (and its companion website, www.foundmagazine.com), Davy Rothbart has bewitched the nation with a surprising window into its heart and soul and turned his many readers into an army of sharp-eyed finders.

Found is chock-full of the latest and greatest of these finds, arranged in the style of the magazine, laying bare the tantalizing tales to be discovered in the trash we toss. By turns heartbreaking and hysterically funny, Found is a mesmerizing tribute to everyday life and our eternal curiosity about our fellow human beings.

This book was suggested to me by the program as a possible gift for my 30-something son, based on items already on his Wish List. I got it for him for his last birthday and he loves it! He and his wife have been poring over it, coming up with lots of interesting nuggets. Thanks for the suggestion!

                4 out of 5 stars I'm glad I FOUND this.......2007-06-10

I'm nosy - not in a malicious way, but others' yearnings, secrets, and day-to-day lives fascinate me. The items documented in "Found" range from hilarious to heartbreaking, and it is a fascinating glimpse into human nature. It's a great bathroom read. It's also reassuring to know other people like reading crumpled notes they found on the library floor or gazing at pictures pressed between the pages of an old book.

                5 out of 5 stars Totally cool!.......2007-04-15

It is so fun to find something along the street... perhaps a love letter not meant for your eyes, or a hilarious note from one person to another. Thats what FOUND is all about. People from all over have sent in things they find from all over. From bathrooms and parks, to inside bathrooms and classrooms. Some are hilarious and some are very strange. This is a great book.

                5 out of 5 stars Great Sequel.......2007-02-22

If you loved the first found book, then you'll love the second. They are set up exactly the same. I think its so fun to get a peek into the lives of strangers and that's why I love these books. Makes a great unique gift!

5 out of 5 stars The New Testament of the FOUND Bible.......2007-02-20

In both FOUND books, and in every issue of FOUND Magazine, the thought comes rushing to my mind that these texts are Scriptures for the Unholy.
                ...In a good way.
                For the rest of us.
These are pages that can be rifled through again and again, and every time something new will be found--some nuance, some missed word, some minor innuendo, something, something you never saw before.
Just as theologians and church members have pored over the Bible and various sacred texts for centuries in search of some elusive meaning, some hidden secret, some lost answer, so can anyone pore over these books in search of something to enrich what they've already read, to complete their conceptions of what this world is like.
When I bought this book, I of course read it in its entirety as fast as I could, because FOUND is fascinating.
FOUND is the distillation of everything sad and strange and joyous and sweet and tragic in modern life, and it's as gripping as any page-turning pulp novel out there. But, after I'd raced through it, after I'd let a little time pass, I kept on picking the book up, and every time I found something I hadn't seen before. An expression in a photo. A strain is someone's handwriting. A painfully significant crossed-out line.
This book is a terrific follow-up to the first FOUND book, and well worth whatever the cost. It's packed with new finds (including a few from yours truly), filled with hope and sadness, and serves as a stunning collage of a worthwhile existence.
                I'm going to dinner.

                5 out of 5 stars Very Intriguing.......2006-12-21

Found II is a companion piece to Found and the Found Magazine. In it are bits of paper stories, notes found all over the world - from a passenger on an airplane to a fax sent to the wrong number. What is fascinating is what is on these bits of paper - the confessions, the anger, and the funny stories. They are all real and fascinating. Some people might not like the format or style of this book. The found items look like they have been photocopies onto the pages in the book and you are told where the item is found. It has the feel of a scrapbook. There is also some explicit language.
However I think the power of the items will fascinate and make you take a second glance at that piece of paper floating around your car and on the ground...

                1 out of 5 stars not what I expected.......2006-11-16

I ordered Found 1 and 2, I expected some cute, sad, and sometimes heart wrenching reading material. I was very surprised to say the least. If the description of the book had include the phrases "excess profanity" and porn material enclosed" I would not have ordered them. I think you should warn readers that these books are XXX rated.

                Book Description

The millions of people who saw and loved The Matrix understood that it was much more than just an action adventure movie with state-of-the-art special effects. Audiences gravitated toward the film because it made a statement about life. Its plot and themes resonated with a postmodern worldview and caused people to think carefully about their spirituality.

In The Gospel Reloaded, authors Chris Seay and Greg Garrett explore the Matrix films, studying the characters and metaphors for their hidden meaning. They show how these movies--with their themes of rebirth and awakening, fate and free will--are guaranteed to generate thoughtful discussion about culture and spirituality.

                Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars A decent but hardly great look at religion in The Matrix..........2004-12-02

Since the first of the Matrix films came out, there's been plenty of talk about the religious paralells in it- Neo as Christ, Trinity as Mary Magdelene, Morpheus as John the Baptist, Cypher as Judas, etc, and it's theme of death, resurrection, and liberation. In The Gospel Reloaded, Seay tries to piece these together in a theologically consistent whole, but never seems to approach the matter with any depth.

While he discusses many interesting theological implications in The Matrix and it's sequels, there are many interesting points that he misses. For instance, what is the significance of the Merovingian and Persephone? (This is touched on, but never seriously looked at) Who is the Architect? What is the meaning of Trinity's death, return to life- and subsequent death? And, most glaring of all, Seay tries to argue that Cypher is not only Judas, but the "Satan" figure of the movie as while- while never confronting what Agent Smith's role is in all of this. On top of that, the author tries to see everything in terms of Joseph Campbell's "hero's journey", while ignoring the many implications of this story.

While I can tepidly recommend this book, I also recommend supplementing it with a few other resources- David Brin's article on The Matrix (as well as his articles on the hero's journey and it's implications in Star Wars and Lord of the Rings) at www.davidbrin.com, and the commentary tracks available on the boxed DVD edition of the Matrix trilogy (with Ken Wilber and Cornel West)- Ken provides a unique spiritual interpretation of The Matrix which doesn't entirely correspond with that of Seay, but fuels much food for thought.

4 out of 5 stars Seeing God All Around........2004-03-27

I wasn't for sure what to think when I first started reading THE GOSPEL RELOADED. From the title, I thought I was going to be reading a watered-down book that illustrated the Christian allusions in the Matrix movies. However, I got more than what I expected. THE GOSPEL RELOADED does illustrate some of the Christian allusions that are prevalant throughout the Matrix films. Yet, the book also illustrates many of the other influences that can be found in the Matrix movies (comics, Easternism, etc). It also touches upon the possibility that the Matrix movies are films that are anti-Christian in nature. But mainly, the book compares and contrasts Christianity with the world view of The Matrix. The book tries to show how The Matrix fits into Joseph Campbell's research of a hero and how Jesus Christ was the ultimate hero.

The authors of the book are very intelligent and have a huge concern for impacting our culture. Nevertheless, the book does have two flaws. First, the book really doesn't flow that well together and kind of skips around from one point to the next without any transitions. Because of that, the book comes off as being more of a hodge-podge than an accurate comparison and contrast. Secondly, though the authors are clearly Christian and it is apparent they are trying to illustrate the similarities and differences between the Gospels and the Matrix movies, they never really do come out and say, "Here's exactly how Jesus is different from Neo and here's how Christianity is different from the world of THE MATRIX". What ends up happening is that the authors end up doing more comparing than contrasting which is a shame. Still, I found THE GOSPEL RELOADED to be better than many Christian books on pop culture I have read and it presents a rounded enough approach that might attract non-Christians into learning more about the Christian faith.

2 out of 5 stars beating a dead Trojan Horse...........2004-02-25

i read this in a couple of hours (skimming certain parts, admittedly) at the Seattle Public Library, then put it back on the cart. there are about 3 billion websites on the Net (give or take) that try to dissect this or that aspect of The Matrix and explain the deep underlying concepts that the Wachowskis dabble in. in 99% of cases this is simply an exercise on the part of the individual in trying to justify his/her viewpoint by aligning it with one of the very ambiguous and wide-open mythological/theological constructs behind the films. the fact is that the films are actually so saturated with conflicting ideologies that they're not supposed to make sense. instead, they have a little bit of everything so that each and every person can relate, regardless of faith (or lack thereof), and take home the over-arching message that only confidence and personal responsibility will set you free.

so after finishing the book 15 minutes ago (more or less), i'm disappointed to say that "The Gospel Reloaded" is the printed equivalent of such a website.

the book seems to be intended for Christians young and old who want to get into all the Cool Stuff that the sinners are into, but can't reconcile it with their families and church-going friends. it's that old line about the atheists having all the fun... Mom says to Dad at the dinner table, "Billy is grounded because i caught him watching The Matrix. they were saying all these dirty words and there was a scene in a nightclub where people were wearing gas masks and groping each other like it was Sodom and Gomorrah!" little Billy replies, "but Mom, i read that the battle on the highway was actually a reference to Matthew 13! ...and that Neo and Trinity represent Adam and Eve for the postmodern era! ...and that The One is a metaphor for Jesus' love!"

even if little Billy (or the book's authors) can find such parallels, The Matrix films are still very dark, very violent, and very un-Christian. sure, the last human city is called Zion, as the authors point out. sure, you could come away with the impression that Neo is Jesus. but to make those sorts of things the central focus of a book is to disregard a hundred other things that take place in the films. what about the premarital physical relationship between the protagonists? the blatantly sexual non-hetero dancing that some of the good guys take part in? the fact that in the first film, Morpheus mentions that The Matrix takes control of your mind "when you go to church," just as it does "when you go to work" and "when you pay your taxes?" you can't ignore those things and pretend the movie played out differently... it didn't. the authors seem to ignore a mountain of contradictions, simply tossing them out for the sake of brevity and (superficial) clarity.

there are also numerous grammatical errors in the book which detract from its presentation... the book is probably better-written and more thought out than some homegrown Matrix-decoding books... however, the frequent typos and improper usage of common English words detract from any professionalism or theological credibility (contradiction in terms?) that the book might have to offer.

bottom line: i consider "The Gospel Reloaded" to be a parallel to Christian rock: take something subversive and re-brand it so it's OK for Christians to enjoy. of course, such rebranding can't be done without diluting the strength of the original. with their book, Seay and Garrett take the intellectual sharpness behind The Matrix and turn it into a blunt #2 pencil for people to write notes with during Sunday school.

besides, if Christian leaders have to go this far to ingratiate themselves with people who watch and enjoy secular films like The Matrix, then what's the point? Satan's already herding the sheep - and the flock has decided that watching The Matrix is more fun than Vacation Bible School.

                4 out of 5 stars Interesting ideas.......2003-12-06

This book is a fun, interesting look at themes in the Matrix films from a Christian point of view. The authors never claim to know the true meaning of the film triology but offer insightful and thought provoking reflections on the film in dialogue with Christianity.

Far from dogmatic, this book should stimulate further discussion and reflection on the Matrix triology and it's relationship to issues of faith.

5 out of 5 stars Taking A Chance, But Definitely Worth It.......2004-05-10

Chris Seay and Greg Garrett take a significant risk in seeking to draw parallels between evangelical Christianity and an R-rated, culturally significant movie, but their risk was worth it.

While drawing criticisms from both within and from outside of Christian circles, the authors strived to redeem the worthy aspects of the Matrix. This choice to interact with contemporary culture proved a noble effort, garnering several media exposures from mainstream sources such as Publishers Weekly and USA Today.

In the words of another review, "The movies call us to seek and find--to ask of our own lives what's real and what's a mirage. They are modern epics, chock-full of meaning and metaphor." The Gospel Reloaded does exactly that--pushes the edge, explores the "truth" of the Wachowski brother's dialogue, and challenges even hardened critics to contemplate its questions.

Overall, I would not recommend this book to younger Matrix fans, but definitely encourage it for the student or serious thinker seeking to make sense of the Matrix from a Christian perspective. It can also serve as an excellent conversational tool for sincere explorers on their own spiritual journey.

The Gospel Reloaded will mess with your mind, just like the film, but leave you better off for the ride.

                  Book Description

In this refreshingly direct and engaging historical treatment of American music and musicology, Richard Crawford argues for the recognition of the distinct and vital character of American music. What is that character? How has musical life been supported in the United States and how have Americans understood their music? Exploring the conditions within which music has been made since the time of the American Revolution, Crawford suggests some answers to these questions.
Surveying the history of several musical professions in the United States--composing, performing, teaching, and distributing music--Crawford highlights the importance of where the money for music comes from and where it goes. This economic context is one of his book's key features and gives a real-life view that is both fascinating and provocative. Crawford discusses interconnections between classical and popular music, using New England psalmody, nineteenth-century songs, Duke Ellington, and George Gershwin to illustrate his points.
Because broad cultural forces are included in this unique study, anyone interested in American history and American Studies will find it as appealing as will students and scholars of American music.

I enjoyed the information provided on nuln. In terms of campaign I put it above AoM (dislike linear adventures) and below SoA. There were some specific parts of FoN that I re-wrote for my campaign to make some sense. Some people will not have a problem with this and others will. In general it it was a decent adventure and tied up a nice campaign. If you are new to WFRP I would definatley pick up the PotD adventure books. There is plenty of good information to use in your campaigns.

What we have here is two interesting Chapman scripts padded out to book length with a few bag-of-a-fag-packet unfunny 'sketches' and some poorly reproduced photographs. Graham Chapman was a comedy legend but his memory is not well-served when the so-called 'Graham Chapman Archives' throw stuff together like this to make a quick buck.

The book is worth getting if you're a Python completist for the early 1970s unproduced Ringo Star Show script co-written with Douglas Adams and for the unbroadcast pilot of Jake's Journey, but the rest of the book is so much wasted trees. And that's 'worth getting' but not 'worth buying at full price'. Fortunately the book was very swiftly remaindered on both sides of the Atlantic.

The presentation is tatty in the extreme, including a mistake-ridden filmography copied verbatim from the internet and a grainy photo of the Pythons positioned in suuch a way that Chapman himself is invisible in the fold between pages! There's almost no context, no actual stills from Jake's Journey, nothing of any value beyond the two main scripts themselves. The other sketches are short, unfunny nothings written when Chapman was very ill and don't deserve to see print, but evidently the 'Chapman Archives' from where this stuff originates is rather sparse when it comes to good, publishable stuff.

What a shame that Chapman's papers have ended up in the possession of someone who neither knows anything about him nor knows how to edit a book.

4 out of 5 stars Uneven But Still Very Funny.......2003-12-24

I didn't know what to expect when I ordered 'Ojril-The Completely Incomplete Graham Chapman', but as a lifelong Pythonphile, I was interested by any original content from Graham.

Essentially, this is a book of unpublished and unproduced scripts written by Chapman with others, notably Douglas Adams. Including the very short "VD", "Jake's Journey", a pilot for an American sitcom written immediately prior to Graham's death, the odd conceptual piece "The Concrete Inspector", and the hilarious highlight of the book written in collaboration with the equally offbeat Douglas Adams, "Our Show For Ringo Starr", which was a avant-garde script for an hour long TV show promoting Ringo's then current album "Goodnight Vienna". (The best line is when Ringo gets to say: "The concept of a four-dimensional space-time continuum inevitably suggests that the universe looks like a prawn omelette.") I found "Jake's Journey" a bit tedious and formulaic, and the Ringo piece utterly brilliant, with everything else falling somewhere in between. Also of great use to the collector is a 'Chapmanography' of videos, recordings and books in which Graham somehow contributed.

This book is a very quick read, and I recommend it to people interested in Graham or Monty Python, just realize that it really isn't a biographical work as much as a set of quirky skits.

4 out of 5 stars Enter the mind of Graham Chapman.......2003-11-28

Let's face it: Graham Chapman was weird.

Which isn't to say he made no sense. I'm sure he made perfect sense to himself and other alcoholics, but a lot of times he was just plain weird. Still, it's fun to step into his mind just simply because you never know what you'll find. Never predictable, always unexpected, if you ever enjoyed Monty Python you'll enjoy this unique look at Graham's unpublished work. Personally as a Pythonite, I relished and adored it. But even a casual fan will appreciate the unusual sketches and bits that this gem contains.

Pick it up. Read it twice. You won't understand all of it, but laugh, because you're not alone.

5 out of 5 stars TV Producers: Listen Up!.......2002-01-09

This is a really funny book. No kidding. Really funny. I haven't laughed so hard in a long time. Why doesn't some clever producer snap up these sketches and put them on TV then we'd be spared another season full of dreck!

3 out of 5 stars Spotty but moments of brilliance.......2001-12-14

This book shows quite clearly exactly what Chapman's role in Python was: to show up late, do very little work, but contribute one or two outrageously out-there ideas to really stir things up. The Our Show For Ringo Starr script (too bad this was never produced!) reads much more like Douglas Adams than Python, but with occasional bizarre Chapmanisms to keep things interesting (and completely absurd.) The rest of the book echoes things that Chapman has worked on before, and even includes a few lines lifted directly from Python sketches. All that said, however, the book was a bracing, inspiring read -- a refreshing blast of insanity that makes for great (easy) (...) browsing.
