Founded in 1951 by visionary textile designer Armi Ratia and her husband, Viljo, the Marimekko Corporation in Finland not only sparked a revolution in pattern making but also pioneered a new definition of fashion that embraced the entire home environment. This book-the first comprehensive study of Marimekko designs-presents more than one hundred examples of the exuberant Marimekko fashions and home furnishings that gave the company a definitive presence on the world design stage. This book will liberate you from your everyday's worries. Get carried away by the splendor of Finnish Marimekko, by travelling with them to Northern Europe. A place where people endure long dark winters to enjoy three months of summer-paradise. Always in an overwhelming nature, bound to make you feel a little lonely.
By concentrating on clothing and home-environment, Marimekko superbly reflects this lifestyle. With a distinctive link to the Sixties, by the way. Besides providing a thorough picture of this company's artistic whereabouts, this book leaves you in no doubt Marimekko ranks among the finest designs in the world. There's one afterthought, though: being utterly Scandinavian, one wonders if Marimekko appeals much to American taste.
a thorough tribute to a design giant.......2004-03-11
I just saw the last weekend of this show in New York at the Bard Center and it was inspired, to say the least. The book is the next best thing to being there if you are a Marimekko fan. It is a more thorough look at the company than the older title "marimekko phenomenon". The editor of this book, Marianne Aav (also the show's curator) was responsible for the 1998 show/book from the Bard Center on Finnish Modern Design. Marimekko's brave colors, shapes, and graphics are made more powerful, in my mind, by the fact that the final result appears so simple. While I mourn the lack of this in much of today's clothing/textile design, I think that the renewed excitement about Marimekko, and design in general, indicates that this is changing. There is a lot of exciting material coming out of Scandanavia and Finland by young designers right now, but Marimekko's influence on modern design cannot be underestimated. Their vision ranged beyond textiles into architecture as well, which the book illustrates. This exhibit & accompanying book have done a fine job at giving credit where it's due.

This book is horrible.......2007-01-25
I decided to buy this book after seeing the cover. My mother taught me when I was younger not to do things like that, because sometimes you'll be wrong, but she was barely literate and didn't know who my father was, so I ignored her and this book arrived in the mail.
The first sign that something was wrong was the way the mailman was walking when he brought this enormous package up to my house. It says that it's 220 pages, but these fancy art designers fail to mention that they are incredibly thick pages, so the book itself weighs about thirty pounds. It isn't even a good centerpiece, either, because its existence means you're worried about ice breaking, and my friends got offended. They wanted to know why I didn't feel comfortable around them, speaking and interacting in the banal, juvenile ways I had been doing for years, but I was tired of so I bought this book which I thought I could read in the privacy of my room.
Anyway, the facts, as mentioned by a bunch of other reviewers are either way off or stupid. "'Birds of a Feather' do NOT actually flock together!", "It is against the law for a baby to occupy a uterus without a signed permit in Tallahassee, FL, after a mistake in the text of the cities [sic] laws!" This stuff isn't even readable, and sometimes it borders on dangerous. What is this supposed to be, "Carmel was invented in the middle ages as an experiment by Gypsies to start blood libel myths about themselves, after they saw how well it worked for the Jews!", or in their "Hand Myth" section (at least fifty of the super-thick pages are devoted specifically to "hand myths", which I thought was a joke at first, but it kept going and going and going) they told me that my little boy was more prone to psychosis because his ring finger is slightly shorter than his pointer finger, and that he was possibly retarded because his hand could stretch over his face.
Looking back, I would probably have preferred that this book been lost in the mail and I just got ripped off. Then I could be steamed at Amazon and these NICOTEXT goons, but now I'm angry and I've read this book. Talk about a double whammy. Which, by the way, the book says was originally an obscure term for bestiality in Middle Persian.

This book had some interesting tid-bit facts. Would have been nice if I had received it as a gift rather than purchasing it myself. I read through the book once a lot of the facts I had already known and some were very suprising.

Save your money, if i could get mine back i would want it doubled. Filled with spelling and grammer errors (page 27 "The Big Kahuna Burger" was not only eating in pulp fiction". I'm pretty sure that should be eaten, and a comma not a period at the end.), i run across several facts that are just plain wrong (page 17 "In Fairbanks Alaska a law forbids elks to have sex on the streets"... ok first off elks isnt a word, its just elk, and second off there are no Elk in fairbanks alaska, the law is about Moose. I live in Fairbanks, its a well known law from the early 1900s with a funny story about why it is a law, but there are NO ELK in interior of Alaska) Save your money and buy a book that at least went through a spell checker or a grammar check, and for God's sake, if you are gonna call them facts , at least make sure they are facts!

This engaging encyclopedia contains over 160 entries and includes notable actors, actresses, screenwriters, directors, comedians and more (both living and dead), as well as specialized topics. Entries on individuals cover a page or two while broader subjects (like "American Television - Dramas and "British Television") are much lengthier. Contributors include professors, scholars, writers and critics in the field. For the most part, entries are thorough, covering a person's career and accomplishments as well as illuminating their private life and what part, if any, their sexuality had on their professional lives. Some subjects are more revealing than others. For example, entries on Agnes Moorehead and Cary Grant, two examples of famous "were they or were they not?," don't really include any new information, aside from gossip, and the basis for their inclusion is questionable. On the other hand, recently deceased contemporary subjects, who never publicly came out, like Roddy McDowell, James Ivory and Ismail Merchant, are included. Famous bi-sexuals (like Tallulah Bankhead, Errol Flynn, Brad David and Margaret Cho) are included. A notable highlight of the book is the inclusion of contemporary actors, like Dan Butler, Alan Cumming and Lily Tomlin. There are so notable omissions (like Leslie Jordan, Sara Gilbert and David Hyde Pierce), but the editor states that the book is not meant to be comprehensive and the lack of information on certain individuals is often the reason for their absence. Hopefully, this is a reference work that will be revised in years to come. It is a helpful and informative source.

This book is a must if you love Gord and like to play guitar yourself. No one volume could possibly hold all the wonderful music that Lightfoot has produced, but this Deluxe Anthology has a ton in there. True Lightfoot fans won't be disappointed. Check the song list, spend the moeny, and in return you'll get hours of enjoyment playing some of Gord's most timeless songs.

If you want to play this game with a strategy guide, then your best option is to forget Bradygames and Prima, because authorisedcollection has a much much more detailed and thorough explanation of the game. I had a look at the reviews that 4 or 5 stars are put, they just didn't know what real strategy guide should look at. If you want to have the ranking of the legendary "Big Boss" in the game, go try authorisedcollection guide, otherwise you are just wasting your time playing this game. I'm not trying to offend Bradygames and Prima, but authorisedcollection series the best.
If you are a Final Fantasy fan, go and compare guides from authorisedcollection and bradygames and you will know what I meant above.

I was almost finished with Metal Gear Solid 2 when I stopped playing for almost a year. When I went to play again, I realized that I didn't remember the story that well and I didn't remember the layout of the area I was in. I decided to restart the game, but this time use a guide to make sure that I don't miss any items and to quickly get through the areas I had already played. Since this was the only guide available, I picked it up.
Some reviews of this guide make mention that the guide is not actually needed to complete the game and that simply playing the game is all the strategy that one needs. That may very well be, but I don't think that applies in reviewing the guide. What matters is that the guide has all of the necessary information required to complete the game and not miss any items and that it includes tips on how to beat the bosses. This guide has all of that and is very valuable in completing the game. While many things can be discovered by trial and errors, this guide will get you through the game with no trouble (the only trouble may come in actually applying the strategies to beat a boss). The most valuable aspect of this guide comes in that it details on a map the patrol patterns of the guards. Knowing in advance how far a guard will patrol is very useful in planning your path though the level. If capturing the dog tags from the soldiers is important to you (and if you want the bonus items, it should be important), the guide provides useful strategies on how to get every dog tag in the game (on normal mode). I tried out some of them, and it worked just as the guide suggested. I wasn't that interested in collecting the dog tags my first time completing the game, so I didn't spend the time to collect them all. As far as I could tell, the strategies were spot on.
One thing I should mention is that the strategies to get the dog tags and for beating the game apply to the normal difficulty setting. Since some things change on the higher difficulty levels, the guide is probably not as useful for mastering the game on the highest difficulty.
Using this guide for the normal difficulty level, this is an excellent guide that will take you through the game and not spoil and story points. If you feel you need a guide for Metal Gear Solid 2, this one is well worth your money.

I'll be honest with you. This book is designed really well. It is one of two BradyGames books right now in the "Signature" series -- strategy guides that feature higher-quality paper, very well-designed walkthroughs, and an extra like a poster. Unlike other guides, you don't get lost in all the small text trying to figure out where you were reading when you last looked up from the book. The strategy actually goes guard-by-guard, so you can use it if you're stuck trying to get past a specific guard, or you can use it to walk you through the whole game.
The reason I gave this guide four out of five stars is because it really only contains the minimum information you need to complete the game. Sure, there are blurbs about secrets and stuff, but I just didn't get the feeling that this was a book chock full of "insider's info" on MGS2.
