Beautiful words for any mother.......2002-06-05
If you like Mary Engelbreit, you'll like this. If you're a mom, you'll like it even more. I find myself looking at it again and again. I have also given it as a gift to my other fellow mothers.
Bought it for myself, and glad I did!.......2002-03-06
I love Mary Engelbreit, and I love being a mom. So this book worked for me. It is a sentimental collection of artwork and quotations about the mother/child experience. It made me feel good, but I can't say that I read it every day. However, I am glad I have it. An excellent gift...for anyone who is a mom....including yourself. It just makes ya feel so good!
I loved it so much I gave my copy to my mom!.......2000-05-16
This book is so loving of mothers! It really made me feel good to be one and to be able to recognize how wonderful my own mother is. Its' a great compliment to me to have someone say I'm like my mom!
Words for Mothers to Live By - Touches the Heart.......2000-05-04
This is Mary Engelbreit's best yet! The illustrations are wonderful and classic Mary -- but the quotations are the heart of the book. Combined together, they make for a treasure. Thoughtfully and artisically arranged this book will be loved by all who read it.
Book Description
In the fourth installment of the Words To Live By series, Mary Engelbreit turns her attention to teacher - those who teach inside the classrom and out. The result is sure to win high marks from educators and the rest of her fans. Strong memories of her own early school days coupled with a deep respect for the work teachers do every day has made teachers (and school children too, of course) frequent subjects of Mary's artwork. "I guess it's my little way of showing appreciation for a severly under-appreciated group," she says. As in the other Words To Live By books, Mary's artwork is presented alongside inspirational quote from famous writers, artists, scholars, statesmen, and students - this time with words that pay tribute to the practioners of this most noble profession. Teachers love Mary Engelbreit, and this book shows that the feeling is mutual.

Sharing Breit Thoughts.......2001-11-15
Mary Engelbreit is a talented artist who touches many hearts. Last year, I received this type of calendar from my best friend. Each day I was delighted by Mary's colorful & bright paintings with quotes. I couldn't stand the thought of throwing them in the trash, so I recycled them. I cut off the dates, and shared the pictures with my co-workers as motivation calling cards. I was surprised to see how many have posted them on the walls of their cubicles!
ME's Words to Live By.......2001-08-19
I have been purchasing these calendars for as long as I can remember. I cannot imagine spending a year without ME's daily calendar. The beautiful lithographs and inspirational words will bring a smile to your heart! I have saved and framed many daily pages from various years' calendars to decorate the walls of my office at the bank. My customers always look forward to "breitening" their day by reading the daily calendar page before beginning their business. Order your calendar today and you, too, will be a fan by the end of January!

Book Description
WARNING:
This is not a cookbook. You'll find no tongue-tempting treats within -- unless, of course, you consider Boiled Cow Elbow with Plaid Sauce to be your idea of a tasty meal. No, The Gallery of Regrettable Food is a public service. Learn to identify these dishes. Learn to regard shivering liver molds with suspicion. Learn why curries are a Communist plot to undermine decent, honest American spices. Learn to heed the advice of stern, fictional nutritionists. If you see any of these dishes, please alert the authorities.
Now, the good news: laboratory tests prove that
The Gallery of Regrettable Food AMUSES as well as informs. Four out of five doctors recommend this book for its GENEROUS PORTIONS OF HILARITY and ghastly pictures from RETRO COOKBOOKS. You too will look at these products of post-war cuisine and ask: "WHAT WERE THEY THINKING?" It's an affectionate look at the days when starch ruled, pepper was a dangerous spice, and Stuffed Meat with Meat Sauce was considered health food.
Bon appetit!
The Gallery of Regrettable Food is a simple introduction to poorly photographed foodstuffs and horrid recipes from the Golden Age of Salt and Starch. It's a wonder anyone in the 1940s, '50s, and '60s gained any weight. It isn't that the food was inedible; it was merely dull. Everything was geared toward a timid palate fearful of spice. It wasn't nonnutritious -- no, between the limp boiled vegetables, fat-choked meat cylinders, and pink whipped Jell-O desserts, you were bound to find a few calories that would drag you into the next day. It's just that the pictures are so hideously unappealing.
Author James Lileks has made it his life's work to unearth the worst recipes and food photography from that bygone era and assemble them with hilarious, acerbic commentary: "This is not meat. This is something they scraped out of the air filter from the engines of the Exxon Valdez." It all started when he went home to Fargo and found an ancient recipe book in his mom's cupboard: Specialties of the House, from the North Dakota State Wheat Commission. He never looked back. Now, they're not really recipe books. They're ads for food companies, with every recipe using the company's products, often in unexpected and horrifying ways. There's not a single appetizing dish in the entire collection.
The pictures in the book are ghastly -- the Italian dishes look like a surgeon had a sneezing fit during an operation, and the queasy casseroles look like something on which the janitor dumps sawdust. But you have to enjoy the spirit behind the books -- cheerful postwar perfect housewifery, and folks with the guts to undertake such culinary experiments as stuffing cabbage with hamburger, creating the perfect tongue mousse when you have the fellas over for a pregame nosh, or, best of all, baking peppers with a creamy marshmallow sauce. Alas, too many of these dishes bring back scary childhood memories.
Customer Reviews:
Hilarious!.......2007-08-04
This book is very funny; it could have been funnier if the author was a bit more subtle, but it's still quite amusing and makes a good gift for a foodie or anyone who cares about what they eat.
Hilarious.......2007-06-27
This book is absolutely priceless. Doesn't everybody remember those frightening jell-o molds our mothers used to make? Brings back fond memories. And Lileks comments are so funny. I was laughing on the first page.
Hilarious! .......2007-05-02
I love this book. It's hilarious. I re-read it whenever I need a pick-me-up. I also have his Interior Desecrations book. His has a certain type of humor, and if you get it, you get it. If not, read something else. I happen to love his humor.
WASTE OF PAPER; WASTE OF MONEY.......2007-04-14
I agree with others. I wish I could give this book zero stars or even fewer - like a negative 4 stars! It is a mean spirited book; there is no humor here.
A friend saw this book (but did not open it) in a book store and was intrigued by the title and knew I was interested in cooking and cookbooks and suggested I take a peek at it. I too was intrigued by the title and immediately ordered it from Amazon-dot.
I ordered this without reviewing the reviews - I regret it. (I usually review at least some "negative reviews first" before ordering a book I know nothing about or ordering a book by an author I know nothing about.)
Don't waste your money on this. I did not even want this mean-spirited book in my house. I dumped it on the friend who recommended it - she thought it most unpleasant also and is looking for something to do with it.
The paper at least can be recycled.
The only thing interesting about this book is the title - clever title - from there on boring, trite, humorless and mean.
Gastronomic Horrors from the Good Ol' Days.......2007-03-28
This is what first drew me to the author's work; an irreverent examination of the full, stomach-churning, vitamin-deficient terror of recipes from the 1930s-70s... Many readers will still have repressed memories of being confronted with a large, chunky, odd-smelling and disconcertingly ALIVE-looking gelatin mold that we've been EXPECTED to eat at some stage in our past. Those of us who have indeed suffered through this can use this book as a form of 'laughter therapy', and for those of you who haven't had to endure such an experience... well... you can look at the relevant pages and thank your lucky stars. And the gelatin molds ain't the half of it... Mysterious lumpy brown casseroles... Weird things with wieners in them... The list goes on and on...
I use this book to frighten my friends whenever they suggest that I cook for them.
Seriously, for any connoisseur of the ghastly, or, yes... dare I say it, anybody interested in mid-20th century cuisine, this book is an absolute scream! It makes a great gift for anybody who loves food and a good laugh in equal measures.

Apes fans, this is it: aside from an early '70s article that appeared in Cinefantastique, nobody but nobody's paid much attention to the making of the groundbreaking Planet of the Apes saga. The wait is over, though--and how. Unapologetic fanboys Joe Russo and Larry Landsman (and, later, Edward Gross) have been laboring over this exhaustive, fact-packed, behind-the scenes record of all five movies, the TV show, and the cartoon for the better part of 17 years. The effort shows, with countless on-set pictures, unprecedented access to the estates of Rod Serling, Roddy McDowall, and producer Arthur P. Jacobs, and extensive quotes from virtually everyone associated with the project, from screenwriters to actors to makeup artists to the special effects crew. (To give you an idea of the devotion we're talking about, Russo actually wrote his first "making of" Apes book back in the fifth grade. It was hand stitched with a plastic cover.)
Deserving of special note is Charlton Heston, who contributed not only the foreword for this book but scores of entries from his swaggering personal journals. ("A helluva long day, in the course of which I was finally brought to earth as Taylor. Having evaded clubs, whips, horsemen, crowds, they tripped me ass over teakettle into a thrown net and hoisted me high.... Upside down in a net, a man isn't worth much.") But even more interesting are the minutiae that inevitably emerge in any close examination of a production this complicated: that Marlon Brando had been considered first for the lead, that there were racial casting concerns in the wake of the Watts riots, even the fact that Planet of the Apes hit the small screen in an attempt to knock off Sanford and Son. This account may sprawl a bit in spots, with some quotes that overlap overmuch and minutiae that's awfully minute, but any fan who has even an ounce of Russo and Landsman's enthusiasm will be hard-pressed to complain. --Paul Hughes

Customer Reviews:
An Enjoyable Read.......2007-03-22
I enjoyed reading this book for its interesting information from a number of the participants in the making of the Apes movies. It is a good companion to the recently released ultimate DVD collection.
I give it 4 of 5 stars because it lacks in-depth analysis of the ideas in the films and comparison to other projects, but you can't have everything in one book. I applaud the authors for putting together what they did.
Awesome! Best Apes Fan Book Ever Written!.......2006-04-26
This book is great! It covers every aspect of all of the apes movies, including Burton's, the TV series, and the Saturday morning cartoon. It includes quotes and facts that are amazing. It's an easy read, yet it's got some meat to it. I loved reading about the script developments and alternate endings that have been discussed for all of the movies. It's got some great pictures too! Great book, awesome price!
Don't take your stings paws off this book........2006-04-22
This is the most comprehensive book I have come across on Planet of the Apes. The book covers everything from concept to the TV series (both live action and animated). If you are a fan of the franchise or a movie buff this book will detail how a franchise made its way through the studio process. You won't be dissappointed with this book.
A great book about a great series.......2005-07-05
Informative, with lots of behind-the-scenes information and pictures, this book is a must-have for any Planet Of The Apes fan. I enjoyed the information on alternate scripts (and wished there had been MORE of this information, but that's assuming that more even exists), and liked that the authors included some of the original reviews for the films -- a nice touch. Several of the cast and crew were interviewed for the book, and the book itself is well written. A good read.
Fascinating look at a pop culture phenomenon.......2003-07-17
"Planet of the Apes Revisited" is by Joe Russo and Larry Landsman, with Edward Gross. The authors chronicle the behind-the-scenes story of the making of the "Planet of the Apes" films and TV series. The book also includes a chapter on Tim Burton's reimagined "Apes" film.
The book's intro notes that the authors had "complete and total access" to the archives of late "Apes" producer Arthur P. Jacobs; furthermore, many actors and behind-the-scenes talents were interviewed for the project. This in-depth research really pays off in this engrossing, well-written narrative. The book is enriched with many quotes from cast and crew and a wealth of photographs.
The authors frankly discuss the strengths and weaknesses of each film, as well as controversies attached to them. A particularly interesting part of the book is the account of the test reel in which Edward G. Robinson played Dr. Zaius. The book also discusses the music of the films, and includes episode guides to both the live-action and animated TV series. This book is essential reading for true "Apes" fans. Funny, fascinating, and even poignant, it made me want to watch all of these marvelous films again.

Richard Raffan's Turning Guide.......2007-03-08
A great set of books for the beginner or the experienced turner. These are clear, practical and easy to follow guides.
Amazing.......2006-03-17
So much information for beginners it's unreal. I just started turning last year as a hobby and I can't stay away from it. Well organized, detailed pictures, a must have for any turner, beginner or expert. It is something you can keep learning and use as a guide if you have any questions.
Want to learn how to turn?.......2006-01-13
Mr. Raffan's books are some of the best books I have ever read
on the use of wood lathes and turning tools.
His photos and drawings are excellent and clearly illustrate the
ideas presented in the text.
He seems to always anticipate the questions that a novice would
ask and answers them as though you were present at the writing.
I give these books 5 stars only because I couldn't give them 10
