Absolutely Amazing.......2004-06-28
This 1999 collection consists of issues #1-#12 of the Authority made up of the three initial storylines, The Circle, Shiftships, Outer Dark that introduces this unique and innovative superhero concept to readers.
"The Circle" is the introduction to the team of superheroes up against an old foe in the Wildstorm universe who sets his country of Gamorra against the rest of the world. "Shiftships" bring the team up against an invading alternate dimension. And "Outer Dark" is the climax of the first three stories that changes the team and sets up the next half in Volume 2.
The Authority is made up of characters that are an homage to your traditional comic superheroes. There's Apollo, "The Sun God" with Superman-like powers. The Midnighter, "Night's Bringer of War", a fighter who has had enhancement made on his body to make him like the ultimate Batman warrior. The Engineer, "The Maker" whose liquid metal technology lets her make her body into anything. The Doctor, "The Shaman" in touch with the world who can bend reality to his liking. Jack Hawksmoor, "The God of Cities" controls and communicates with cities. Swift, "The Winged Huntress" an angel-like bird of prey. And enigmatic Jenny Sparks, "The Spirit of the 20th Century".
The stories are written by Warren Ellis of Transmetropolitan, Planetary, Global Frequency, and currently Ultimate Fantastic Four fame. His stories are amazing from their grand opening to issues and eye-popping cliffhangers and the unique spin he takes on superheroes as those who do not fight a weekly badguy, but those that try to make a difference and change the world.
Penciller Bryan Hitch first caught my eye in the Ultimates and through his run on the Justice League. What he brings to the work is beautifully portrayed art that makes his pencilling almost paintlike. The movements and expressions of his characters are near life-like and his action scenes seem like something plucked out of a blockbuster movie.
The "special features" that come at the end of this edition is a set of script pages from the first storyarc.
This is definitely a comic that is a must have on any collector's bookshelf. It's hard to find a copy, but if you do get your hands on one, don't hesitate to take it home.

Absolutely stunning .......2006-11-22
This review if for the hard bound "Absolute Authority Vol 2"
The Authority are today's super heroes, They are more like a De Facto JLA on drugs. They think and act like regular Joes, that just so happen to be blessed with super human abilities, which for any human being become a self defeating plague. Each member of the team has their own demons and issues to deal with, top that off with combating super villains and totalitarian Governments and they inevitably fall apart. They have weaknesses and defects which makes them easier to relate to and care about. They struggle and just when you think it's over they overcome. A true underdog comic, no Superman always wins and pretty daisy for all the damsels. This book pushed the envelope and was even subjected to censorship which was the cause for the leading artist to eventually walk off the project. The editor forced them to change many detail they deemed too controversial ( too much similarities to present day political figures and facts, the high tone violence and adult language)The story telling is dark and twisted, the art is equally horrifying, something Frank Quitely manages to keep clean and precise. Mark Millar does wonders following Ellis's run and manages to give us in inside look at the destructive nature and price that heroes have to pay in order to save the world. His writing is clever and witty, and the story lines disturbing yet all too realistic. Frank Quitely who pencils the majority of the book is a breath of fresh air in an industry filled with unrealistic and super model heroes. His art is clean and un pretty, which makes it stand apart from the Jim Lee, Marc Silvestri Era comics. I would compare his style to the McFarlane era Spider man. My only dislike are the gaps between Quitely's run only because the art seems very rushed and in my opinion unprofessional. Thank God Quitely does the majority of the pencils, he's one of my favorite artist around today and is one of the reasons I love this book so much. D.C. comics has hit a miles stone with their Absolute editions line, which are all in large format and come in a book case with tons of extras. A great addition to any collector looking to read their favorite comic with out having to go through the hassle of digging through their stash or risk damage to their collection each time they have the itch to re-read them. I recommend this to any fan of Frank Quitelys work on All Star Super man and New X-men.
Highly original and highly human, even for super-types.......2005-11-03
This volume of issues 13-29 of the original comic is my first exposure to the "Authority" series and I'm definitely going to have to go back and locate the first collection. (Although the backstory is nicely conveyed, too.) The superheroes who make up the Authority are "manufactured" rather than being aliens or supernatural beings, and they're often not very nice, and the Good Guys are perfectly willing to use cattle-prods to get information from captured Bad Guys. They've also decided they're allowed to make the law better than any corrupt government. Unlike the "WHAM! POW!" style of the Golden and Silver Ages, there's a good deal more blood and forthright pain on the page. On the other hand, there's no doubt who the *real* Bad Guys are here -- they're the international conglomerates who control mere national governments so they can more easily strip the earth of its natural resources and enhance the bottom line. The members of the Authority aren't patriotic, nationalist flag-wavers and take pleasure in overthrowing the dictatorships they come across. In the first of the three stories in this collection, they deal both with an Evil Genius (eventually co-opted) and with political refugees while coming to grips with the replacement of their late leader -- the "spirit of the 20th century," a neat concept. In the second story, the earth-destroying force they have to fight turns out to be the Earth itself -- another interesting and original idea. The third story involves the replacement of the Authority by the G-8 nations by a bunch of creeps they con control. In other ways, this comic is very much a 21st century product, with an openly gay couple, domestic violence themes, and a drug-addicted "world shaman." Physically, it's a very nice book, too, with a slipcase and built-in-bookmark.

Book Description
"By My Absolute Royal Authority": Justice and the Castilian Commonwealth at the Beginning of the First Global Age is a study of judicial administration. From the fifteenth century to the seventeenth, the kingdom of Castile experienced a remarkable proliferation of judicial institutions, which historians have generally seen as part of a metanarrative of "state-building." Yet, Castile's frontiers were extremely porous, and a crown government that could not control the kingdom's borders exhibited neither the ability to obtain information and shape affairs, nor the centrality of court politics that many historians claim in an effort to craft a tidy narrative of this period. Castilians retained their loyalty to the monarchy not because of the "power" of the institutions of a developing "state," but because they shared an identity as citizens of a commonwealth in which a high value was given to justice as an ultimate purpose of the political community and a conviction that the sovereign possessed "absolute royal authority" to see that justice was done. This expectation served as a foundation for the political identity and loyalty that held together for several centuries the disparate and globally-dispersed domains of the Hispanic Monarchy, but perceptions of how well crown judicial institutions worked were a fundamental determinant of the degree of support a monarch could attract to meet fiscal and military goals. This book maps part of this unfamiliar terrain through a microhistory of an extended, high profile lawsuit that was carefully watched by generations of Castilian leaders. Justices from the late fifteenth century to the reign of Philip II had difficulty resolving the conflict because the proper exercise of "absolute royal authority" was itself the central legal issue and the dispute pitted against each other members of important groups who demonstrated a tendency to give prominence to different interpretive schemes as they tried to comprehend their world. The account brings together politica

Book Description
This book introduces a new approach to the comparative study of sacred texts - here the Christian Bible, the Islamic Koran, the Hindu Veda and the Buddhist Tipiaka. The author demonstrates that, in spite of their great differences, these works show a fundamental analogy.Considered as canonical within their own religious context, each text possesses absolute authority in comparison with other authoritative texts from their respective religious traditions. This fundamental analogy allows one to describe the growth and history of these canons, step by step, as a process that takes place in analogous phases that are clearly distinguishable. The author follows a strictly phenomenological method: he tries to understand the development of these canons in terms of a potential that lies within the phenomena themselves, i.e. the texts, while refraining in any way from assessing their claim to absolute authority.
In part I the author describes the development from the 'revelation' of the texts to a climax with respect to reflection on the canons. This climax has been reached in all four cases. Part II investigates the crisis that these canons are currently undergoing as a consequence of the modern intellectual climate. Can we expect that this crisis will be overcome by the canons? And if so, will they be in a position of mutual exclusion or will they form a sort of unity such as, for example, the Old and New Testament in the Christian Bible? Finally the author traces what the religions themselves have postulated about the future of their respective canons. The result is surprising: the current crisis is only faint reflection of what, according to age-old predictions, awaits the canons in the future.

Unlock the emotional roadblocks that can inhibit or interfere with the success of therapy
Videowork is the therapeutic process in which therapists assign popular films that relate to core issues of ongoing therapy. Clients are instructed to do their "homework" between sessions and prepare for discussion in future sessions. Rent Two Films and Let's Talk in the Morning explores how therapeutic work interwoven with popular films enhances traditional therapy. This much-anticipated revision provides an introduction to using movie rentals in therapy and serves as a ready reference for therapists who want to assign videos as homework.
Authors John and Jan Hesley address the dilemmas that you may face when deciding when it is appropriate to assign a film, and offer friendly guidance and detailed information on every aspect of using films as tools in therapy.
In addition, this updated edition:
- Provides concise descriptions of dozens of popular videos and shows how they can be used as therapy for specific therapeutic needs (divorce, child abuse, substance abuse, etc.)
- Contains a revised organizational structure, covering therapy topics based on patient issues frequently encountered in therapy, including marital problems, parenting, job stress, abuse, and emotional disorders
- Offers suggestions on selecting films, creating assignments, and processing homework
- Provides newly released film reviews, along with 40 additional films with brief descriptions, in the "Therapists' Film Reference"
Customer Reviews:
Rent Two Films and Buy This Book.......2001-07-23
This is a great tool for therapy with individuals, groups, families, or to expand your own thinking when watching videos. I have used this book with clients of all ages and in parenting classes. Almost all my clients gained insight and were able to view their own issues more rationally after watching the suggested films. The Setting The Scene and Scripting For Therapy sections are particularly useful if you do not have a chance to view the film prior to recommending it. I am anxiously awaiting the sequel.
Perceptive ways to use films for insight and growth.......1998-04-27
Although intended for therapists, this insightful book about using movies to illuminate our own experiences, motives, and choices is very worthwhile for families. The descriptions of movies like "Field of Dreams," "Breaking Away," and "Dead Poet's Society" provide us with thoughtful and perceptive ways to apply what we see to our own lives. The stories of the patients who were able to understand, identify, and change old patterns after seeing them reflected in the films are exceptionally well presented, and the suggestions for aproaches to using the films are sensitive and illuminating. Any parent will benefit from reading this book to gain a better way of thinking about what we show our children and how we can use what we do show them to improve family understanding and communication.

Although Rowe focuses primarily on musical motivations and possibilities of interactive systems, he also takes up such practical considerations as how to build, analyze, and extend these systems and looks at the impact of music theory, music cognition, and artificial intelligence on the design of interactive systems and on ensemble performance. He describes in detail both the theory and practice of his own real-time interactive music program, Cypher, and further illustrates basic concepts and characteristic issues using the graphic MIDI programming environment Max.
In a concluding chapter, Rowe assesses developments in hardware and software with implications for the evolution of interactive systems, including their implementation in multipleprocessor environments, the impact of real-time digital signal processing, and extended prospects for sensing performance gesture.
Robert Rowe is Associate Director of the Music Technology Program at New York University.

Book Description
The Lottery Book: The Truth Behind the Numbers should be read by everyone who plays the state-run lotteries. Despite the fact that we players all know the odds are a million to one against winning those big jackpots, most of us don't know the nature of these games or the math behind them or, yes, how to most effectively play them.
Customer Reviews:
Its a waste of money.It isn't a book about winning lotteries.......2007-06-10
It's a book that only tell us about the difficult to win in lotteries.
It's not a book for a gambler.Not contains any tip.only negativity.
Best lottery book.......2006-08-21
I think that this is the best book that I have read until now.
The book is very helpful to those who try to understand the fundamental theory of lottery business.
Above all, the strong point of the book is that the author explained many kinds of lottery very well.
Interesting stuff.......2004-06-30
This book was actually better than I expected. I knew that this book was not going to help me win the lottery nor improve my chances. This book met those expectations and more. I really think portions of this book should be used by programs which deter people from gambling as it explains the odds of various lottery games. The title is right on the money, Catlin gives you the truth behind the numbers and giudes you to the best games to play if you must play. He also makes it clear that playing the lottery and gambling are for entertainment purposes.
