Book Description
Andy Warhol said about his road trip to Los Angeles in 1963: "The farther West we drove, the more Pop everything looked on the highways." In this original and engaging book, Cécile Whiting examines what Pop looked like when it left the highbrow cloisters of Manhattan's art galleries and ventured westward to the sprawling suburbs of Los Angeles. She finds that the artists who made California their home in the 1960s did not abandon their paint brushes for tennis rackets and surfboards, but rather created in their works a new and different sense of space, the urban experience, and popular culture.
Whiting shows how artists such as Vija Celmins, Llyn Foulkes, David Hockney, Dennis Hopper, Allan Kaprow, Claes Oldenburg, Ed Ruscha, and Judy Chicago helped to shape the identity of Los Angeles as an emerging art center, while avoiding in their representation of the city the clichés of both its boosters and its detractors. Delving deep into the southern California aesthetic sensibility, Pop L.A. recounts how the artists transformed the image of the city in works that focused on the ocean and landscape, suburban life, dilapidated houses in aging neighborhoods, streets and parking lots, and public buildings such as the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. The common bond of place, for Whiting, gives coherence to the varied experiments in the visual and performance arts that altered the cultural terrain during this pivotal time. The Los Angeles art scene in the 1960s inspired a new generation of architectural writing about the metropolis and its debased sister city, Las Vegas. Over the course of the decade, the conception of the city pioneered by artists in Los Angeles spread beyond the city of angels to characterize cultural life in the United States.

Extremely excellent, multi-angled- pose file 6..........2006-06-21
...one of my favorites in the series, right along with pose files 8 and even 5...
This is tied with Pose File 8 for being my absolute favorite in the series. This series has 9 volumes, last time I checked, and is filled with fantastic photo reference! Each volume features beautiful female models in various poses seen from many different angles. The photos are in black & white, and all models are asian & female, with the exception of this volume, which actually includes males as well. The male models wear speedo-type bathing suits; the females are completely nude. This is one of the *BEST* volumes in the series regarding actual photo quality- extremely high production value(!)- whereas some other volumes were a bit grainy looking & even poorly cropped at times. Easily one of my favorite-ever photo references(!). Even though these poses aren't the most interesting in the series, the inclusion of males here makes this one of the best. Pose selection aside, we still get all the essential reference for drawing figures from *every* conceivable angle: standing, squatting, kneeling, sitting, reclining, and even on all 4's. And some of the poses *are* pretty creative(!).
At 8-1/4" x 11-5/8", and about 160 pages, it's one of the best & most convenient-sized paperback references I've seen. Amazingly, at this time, this series is hard to find & keep in print. If you're able to get a copy, and at a decent price, it's *easily* worth getting- exceedingly great with learning to draw figures from memory. My highest recommendation!
weakest link.......2000-03-11
Of the series of Pose Files this volume is the weakest. That is unless the artist is looking for static and mime poses with the series' least physically interesting models. This is the only pose file in the first nine volumes to include male models in largely disappointing para-martial poses. A model from Pose File 4 figures in several sitting poses using a white box. These constitute the most useful elements of the volume. Pose Files 2 & 3 offer more artistically interesting static poses.
A welcome addition to my library.......1999-12-25
Pose File 6 is one of the jewels of my art reference collection. Thumbing through it, I get an idea for a new drawing on each page! The male model's poses are especially useful. Anyone with an interest in action illustration would do well to purchase this book.

short interesting facts.......2007-09-13
These books are great for a quick read. You can open anywhere and just start reading. Great for when you just have a couple of miniutes.
You really should get this book.......2006-03-01
I have read probably ten or so bathroom readers...and I would give every single one of them five stars. I'm absolutely addicted to these books, and I will eventually read all of them. Unfortunately, I didn't keep track of which ones I have read.
The neatest thing about these books is that you can amaze your friends with the most obscure information! Like, when you are on an elevator...you can say things like "Would you like to hear about the history of elevators and how they were invented?" Or....you can tell them amazing stories about things like "the gimli glider" (Google it).
Keep up the good work Uncle John!!! (and the BRI Staff)
18 great editions and counting.......2006-01-30
The Bathroom Readers' Institute has produced another great volume of the best useless knowledge you'll ever read about. The only problem is that I still can't put it down when I finish my business. So, it is the end of January, I'm almost done with the book, and have to wait 11 months until the 19th edition.
Fun with trivia and more trivia..........2006-01-01
That I want to go to the bathroom every time I see this book, reminds me of Pavlov's dog that wanted to eat each time it heard the bell ring - now you know I m kidding... Seriously, this book is interesting to go through, not only because the contents are crisp and well-researched, but because they are varied in subject, length, format and treatment. No two consecutive articles are of the same type and length, or for that matter, subject.
The Bathroom Readers Institute (B.R.I) has come up with this immense collection of information, jokes, anecdotes, and other trivia from all sources of information imaginable at this time, brought about in a near-random order. The articles are arranged under numerous headings like A Blunderful life, Bathroom news, Life is strange, TV of not TV, Crème de la Crud, Hut hut hike, Forgotten history, Pop-pourri, Business, Food for thought, That's death, Canadiana, Wordplay, I will survive, Mouthing off, Law and order, Americana, Toys and amusement, Myths and legends, Music, Heroes and villains, Reel stuff, Origins, The printed word, Pop science, Words and origins, Spies and conspiracies, Animals, Tricks and hoaxes, Politics, Public lives, and finally, Answers to teasers. All in all, this is a 500-odd paged compendium of trivia - some funny and others, informative.
That being said, it doesn't have to be read only in the bathroom, but anywhere, anytime... in fact, it still stays on my desk (near my TV flipper) where I can reach it whenever I want to and can, rather than where it was intended to be. But that is a matter of preference, isn't it?

Fantastic for Those of You Who Remember the Comic Strip!.......2005-08-02
I am an avid fan of the Fantastic 4 since I was growing up, reading the comic books and now this book...Fantastic 4: The Making of the Movie! The layout is well put togher and the coverage by Stan Lee and his cameo in the movie was a nice treat! The artwork presents itself well from the comic strip to the movie. This book will make a nice addition to your collection if you're a Fantastic 4 fan!!
A Well Done, if short, Book........2005-06-08
This a nice book for any fan of the FF and/or the movie to pick up. There are a lot of photos and production art. The only problem is that it might have been nice to see more of the production art. Also, many of the photos seem like shots we've already seen from the trailer. That said, the photos, art, and info that is here is great. It really seems like the creators of the movie put a lot of thought into the Fantastic Four as characters - both in the script and their development for the screen as far as visual effects.
The full screenplay seems to be included as well. This part I didn't read as I want to wait for the movie. But it's a nice addition that serves to pad out the book.
Definitely worth your time and money.
A great look at the upcoming film!.......2005-06-07
This book is packed with color photos, production art, set and costume designs, interviews with the stars, and tons of "making of" material that add up to a terrific experience. This is the perfect companion for the movie, and for anyone who is anticipating the film debut of the Fantastic Four. Recommended!

To be A Rogue... A Bard ... A Thief.......2006-02-06
This is by far one of the coolest things in the realm of D&D ... I like the ability to expand a character beyond what the basic addition has ... the Basic D&D has about 8 classes, but you add these type of books, and get about 10 times that many ... if they added some races, we'd be cookin' with some serious gas ... this is a great invetment ... a must if you play a certain type of charater, and want to expand your playing field ...
Best of the WoTC Expansion Book.......2003-01-10
I own all of the WoTC expansion books and this one is the all around best. The other books are geared towards DM's, in that they create prestige classes which would make colorful NPC's. Song and Silence has a healthy selection of prestige classes that players would actually like to become. Futhermore, the feats are very well defined and thought out, and in some circumstances, improved (S&S redefines, for the better, some of the expansion feats in Sword and Fist).
Good for rogues, not so good for bards.......2002-11-06
This book would be somewhat useful to me if I was playing a rogue. Since I'm playing a bard, it wasn't really worth the money. One new prestige class for bards and a few new spells. Some of the content is useful, particularly the section on traps, but it's not indespensable material.
Song and Silence:.......2002-08-09
Song and silence is a great book. It provides with new feats, weapons and prestige classes which you can use to custumize your character. The best part about it is it teaches you how to use skills in a better way, and use your ability's to your advantage. the only thing that tips it off from being a 5-star is having no new skills when bards and rogues are the biggest skill user's in the game.
Unimpressed.......2002-07-17
After enjoying SWord and Fist and Tome and Blood, I was realy looking forward to the opportunities that this book would offer for my fighter/rogue. While the book does go into great detail on the art of trap-making (practically pointless and prohibitively expensive for my rpga campaign) and what different types of instruments are available for bards, the book does little to extend thecombat abilities of the rogue.
This book may make an interesting supplement to a home campaign where you want skilled professionals (temple raiders, royal explorers and spymasters) but doesn't seem to hold much value for someone playing under rpga rules where a swordfight is much more likely than a locked chest, pickpocket opportunity, or a magical spider amulet that is the only way to access theneat (but unplayable) Fang of Llolth prestige class.
