Book Description
We cannot escape the arts. They permeate our lives and our culture--the décor, architecture, music, entertainment, everyday utensils. The imagination of this age, its ideas and concerns, percolate throughout the culture via the arts. These ideas affect us for good or for evil. The choice is not whether to live with art; we must choose whether to live with good art or bad art. Art--like all things human--needs to be redeemed. Christians cannot abandon the arts to the secular world, but can use them to display God's glory. This book will help us develop an informed artistic taste, open yet critical, discerning yet appreciative of what is truly excellent.
"State of the Arts
wisely steers Christians between the two extremes of accepting inane cultural trends or dismissing all cultural pursuits as worldly. The book establishes a strong Biblical context for understanding expressions of human creativity and powerfully defends art as a gift from God. Here is a much-needed counterattack on the aesthetic terrorism by entrenched enemies on the true, the good, and the beautiful." --Ken Myers, author of
All God's Children and Blue Suede Shoes
"Dr. Veith's book stresses an important and often overlooked truth: that no one, professing Christians included, can afford to ignore the arts. They have profound effects on us, our children, and our society. This book is both highly entertaining and intellectually and aesthetically rewarding. It suggests ways to counter the decadence and corruption that plagues the contemporary art world." --Joseph Baldacchino, President, National Humanities Institute
Customer Reviews:
Definition of Art Too Narrow.......2006-11-07
'State of the Arts' attempts to define what art is from a Christian perspective. I have no problem with this, being a long-time and devoted Christian, but I'm not sure I buy into everything Gene Veith says. His definition is largely defined by the biblical account of God's instruction to Bezalel the Old Testament artist for the Tabernacle and Temple; art in general, Veith says, must be creative, intelligent, beautiful, and exalting. I completely agree that modern 'works' such as the crucifix in [...], and the homoerotic photographs of Mapplethorpe lie outside of the purview of what art is; but should Andy Warhol's `Campbell's Soup Cans' also be excluded from the realm of what is considered art because Warhol copied the cans instead of creating them? (He created the idea that makes his statement on consumerism). I actually like modern art (with exceptions, of course) without buying into the 'worldview' any particular point of view expresses; I actually think it is critically important to be able to see into other worldviews as an aid to the evangelical aspect of my faith. That said, I completely agree with Veith's view on modern bohemianism and the cult of the artist as a sort of shaman: the elitist concept, for example, that only certain enlightened people 'get' blank canvasses and while the rest of us just thinks the emperor has no clothes (well-expressed by blank canvases, I think).
This book is a worthy read because Veith at least gives the definition of art a good shot. I just think his view is a little narrow.
A Firm Foundation for Additional Study.......2005-07-31
Veith takes on a large topic in a small volume and faces the limitations thus imposed. Having said that, the book meets its target of providing a brief, lucid framework as a point of reference from which the Christian can begin to explore art as a more informed consumer. Because of the necessity of describing some quite objectionable subject matter in covering the entire breadth of what masquerades as art in the post-modern world, "State of the Arts" should be read by an adult audience. A quite readable and very useful work. Recommended.
smut disguised as christianity.......2005-02-05
My 15 year old daughter is studying this book in history. Not art history, just history. I saw this book in her room and picked it up when I saw "Mapplethorpe" on the cover. My daughter is in a private Christian school so I never in a million years would have thought she'd be learning anything about this freak. I was wrong, she got to learn about Mapplethorpe's photos of men urinating into the mouths of other men. Oh, and Annie Sprinkle's performance art consisting of masturbating then letting customers examine her private parts with a flashlight. I fail to see the reasoning of such graphic descriptions disguised as "Christian" information.
It's A Start.......2001-04-17
Veith tries to tackle a subject that has long been neglected - Christianity and art from biblical times to the postmodern era. Although he gives an acceptable overview for a 230 page paperback, there are many areas where he is just too simplistic.
Veith attempts to create an absolute of the "Christian artist" based on the Tabernacle work of Bezalel. That may be as erroneous as creating a flat world from the scripture verse that deals with "the four corners of the earth."
He makes quick generalized statements about non-Christian artists without being able to back them up - "Jackson Pollock's experiments in the random patterns made by paint flung onto a canvas, might exhibit some cleverness, I suppose - as in, whoever would think to do such a thing? - but no real intelligence or knowledge." Those of us who are artists, however, know better (Veith is an English professor). Pollock's work shows a remarkable amount of knowledge and mastery: The intricate rhythmic harmonies passed down from his mentor, Thomas Hart Benton; the "dance" of the western plains' indians now reproduced in an "action painting"; the understanding of how paint drips and flows (as seen in splatterings of nature); the knowledge of color harmonies; etc.
Veith also comments on Duchamp's inability to create art with his "ready-mades" (An idea championed by Francis Schaeffer). However, this is Duchamp's point. Art not only can be the idea and conception of the artist, but also, art exists around us in all forms that generally go overlooked. Duchamp expanded the narrow vision of the Christian artist and their understanding of creativity and freedom.
Until a writer/artist comes forward to write something of this nature, State of the Arts will have to do. Just remember to proceed with caution and don't buy the whole package.
Recommended to the Christian Artist/Educator.......2000-03-27
Most helpful in this book, and probably unique compared to similar books, is "Part 2: The Biblical Foundations". (Sure, I had read Francis Shaeffer's "Art and the Bible"...But this may be a little more in-depth.) The chapters are called: "6)The Vocation of Bezalel" (the calling of the artist) "7)The Works of Bezalel"(various types of art sanctioned by scripture) "8)The Idolotry of Aaron" (Biblical example of a gifted artist who's art went arwy)
As a painter, I also found the chapter "Art and the Church" both encouraging and challenging. Dr Veith points to the centrality of the Word of God and the limitations of art & aesthetics compared to the Gospel. Very helpful.
I do not find Dr Veith's critique of the Art World to be too extreme, or as un-compassionate as a previous reader does. Considering the overall context of this book, it seems to me that Dr Veith emphasizes the high standard and purpose of Scripture for the arts, and invites Christians to join in on embracing these truths.

Book Description
Uncle John’s team of stellar researchers has dug deep to probe the mysteries, mayhem, and majesty of the movies and their makers. This witty tome for the throne covers such topics as landmarks (just how tall is the Hollywood sign?); mind-boggling special effects; Hollywood murder mysteries, including the strange death of Jean Harlow’s husband; “Where Are They Now?”, a guide to the final resting places of the stars; and lists of the best and worst flicks in several categories, including westerns, sci fi, action, drama, biopics, comedies, and many more. Of course, no book on Hollywood is complete without plenty of diva-licious dish: “Joan Crawford vs. X” details her bitter, bizarre rivalries with Bette Davis and Norma Shearer. Jam-packed with quotes, historical tidbits, puzzles, quizzes, and the effluvia of Hollywood, Uncle John's Bathroom Reader Plunges into Hollywood is sure to keep film buffs enthralled while enthroned.
Customer Reviews:
The Real Hollywood Gossip.......2007-02-18
This is really fascinating stuff. Even my wife began to read it.
The Old Boy is still doing well........2007-02-07
As with previous Bathroom Readers, holds your attention. Some folks get so enthralled that the book "wanders out" of the throne room to other rooms in the house.
Strange title, but a fun book........2007-02-02
This was a gift from a media friend of ours. She knows I stay in the car and read when my wife shops. So this is more a car book than a bathroom book. It is fun and there are so many sections in so many categories and covers most of the great stars. The only complaint I would make is that there are some great ones only given a sentence or not mentioned at all. A sequel to this book is needed. We need more on Susan Hayward than a line. And we do need material on other favorites like Rhonda Fleming, Deanna Lund and Joyce Meadows. Very much appreciated was information on the old great horror films, science fiction, Westerns and action/adventure.
Outstanding.......2006-07-13
I love these books..... keep them coming. For the people that love useless knowledge and short form styles of reading these books rock!!!
Two Thumbs Up for Uncle John's Latest!.......2006-03-16
I have been a fan of the Uncle John series since the very first Bathroom Reader came on the scene. The series is perfect fodder for trivia-craving minds like mine! I have especially enjoyed their "Plunges Into" books - Great Lives, History, etc.
Like the previous "Plunges" volumes, the "Hollywood" book is a hoot. You can dip into the book at any page and come up with fascinating material on actors & actresses, awards, directors, studios, scandals, good movies/bad movies, special effects, bloopers and much, much more. Almost 500 pages of pure delight!
Trivia buffs and movie afficiandos will love this. I know I did. At $17.95, how can you go wrong?!

Customer Reviews:
The Secret Word is "BeeYOOtiful".......2006-03-01
I have to rate this book highly, due to one thing in particular; a load of photos NEW to someone who's been buying all things Marx since the 1970's. Some of the candid, on-set shots; some of the very rare shots of Zeppo; and some shots from scenes that were later cut...these are the stuff of dreams. Crazy dreams, but dreams, nonetheless.
It just misses five stars for two reasons: a nice crop of pictures we've all seen a thousand times and, worse, a number of well-known, yet misquoted, lines.
Did someone proof this? There's not much writing, so it couldn't have taken long...and, after all, Arthur's an author in good standing.
You'd think he could take some of the money he's made off his pop over the past forty years and buy a complete set of Marx CD's. Then he could nab the quotes directly. No excuse for this.
Yet I, for one, still recommend it for the visual treasure it is. A great "coffee table book" - and on a hilarious subject that makes you long to crack it open and take it all in, as opposed to some of those paper paperweights you've typically seen gathering dust in living rooms various and sundry.
ARTHUR MARX'S GROUCHO.......2003-05-13
The best Groucho book to come around in years. I loved it!
A Moving Tome.......2001-09-07
Initially the quality of the photos is striking. Then you look at the subject - a man who brings joy through his art of comedy - and some of the most emotionally moving images of Groucho emerge. And some gorgeous photos of the rest of the brothers also.
What fans of a dead artist always encounter is the lack of anything "new" out there. This fills a gap. I have been a Marx fan since my youth and have found the expenditure on this book, and the wait, worth it. The best picture book on the Marx brothers to date.
If I Held It Any Closer - I Would Be Behind It!!!.......2001-05-10
This book allows you to be in the Marx Family and experience what it must have been like to have a Father who was none other than the "One and Only, GROUCHO!!!"
I have nothing but the utmost respect for Arthur and thank him for sharing his memories and ALL of his fantastic photo's of his Father and Family.
If a picture is worth a million words then this book is worth at least two million ("or three for a dollar").
The Secret Word is: Gorgeous!!!.......2001-05-09
I've owned this book for several weeks now and it continues to have this strange affect on me: every time I pick it up, my mouth opens wide in awe and then twists into a grin that runs from ear to ear!! I just can't stop smiling! This is not your average picture book on the Marx Brothers.
Make no mistake....this book is first and foremost about the pictures and all have been STUNNINGLY reproduced. There is a richness and depth to the photos that you find in, say, coffee table photography books (Ansel Adams comes to mind). Some of the photos have been published before, but the majority of them are being seen here for the first time in book form. But even if you've seen some of the photos before, you've never seen them like this! This truly must've been a labor of love.
Accompanying the photos is a casual running commentary supplied by Arthur Marx which is at once charming, engaging, revealing and entertaining. You can almost imagine yourself thumbing through a Marx family photo album with Arthur stopping here and there to share the memories he associates with each picture.
This book satisfies on so many levels, but don't expect it to be a primer on the life and times of Julius H. Marx. For that find a copy of Hector Arce's GROUCHO (if you can!) but keep a copy of this book nearby because it wonderfully illustrates yet another facet of the man we know as Groucho.
I give this 5 stars (and 4 hard-boiled eggs!)!!!
Book Description
Along with Lateral Mindtrap Puzzles, try some that are even tougher, because you've got to rely on your powers of observation, not just your talent for detecting verbal clues. Photos show close-ups of ordinary objects, and offer a tantalizing clue in words, often a taunting rhyme or quotation. The answers appear on another page, where you see the objects the way you usually look at them. Have you ever really looked at a single red-and-white spiral on a candy cane? Could you recognize a notch on the gear of a can opener? Or, a pair of kernels of corn? Of course you've seen them all before. They're so familiar, they're almost impossible to recognize! In addition, there are lots of trick questions: Is there a Fourth of July in Canada? Yes! It's the day after July 3!
Customer Reviews:
Loved it!.......2006-11-02
It was all the book described it would be, it was fun and tricky and even my employer bought one for her son!
Pleasurable mental stimulation.......2006-04-02
There are two types of puzzles in this book. On each page there is a close up photo of a common object with a short textual clue underneath. For example, on page 37 there is a photo of two batteries and the caption is "Cell mates." Most of the time these puzzles are easy to solve, but there were some that I just could not get. One in particular was a paper towel with the caption, "Dam the flow."
The other puzzles are textual and some are tricky, but easy to solve if you are careful. For example, there is the question regarding what historical event occurred on November 31, 1793. Of course, with 30 days in November, there was no such day. My favorites were the garbled nursery rhymes. I found them easy to decipher, but I admired the cleverness that went into creating them.
This is an enjoyable collection of puzzles, they provided me with a great deal of relaxing mental stimulation, which is always a pleasure.
Great bargain.......2001-02-21
For its price I definitely recommend all the puzzle lovers out there to get it. It's got some tantalizing, original puzzles in it, like they'll show you a close-up of an object and ask you to identify it. This is much harder than you think, but very entertaining. The "nursery rhyme" puzzles are truly one of its kind. They paraphrase a nursery rhyme into a mad-scientist's language and ask you to identify the jumbled nursery rhyme. Too bad there're only four such puzzles in it... And then there's also the silly "does canada have a july 4th" type of puzzles. This brings down the score, but really this puzzle book is as original as well as fun as one could possibly hope for.
Book Description
Catch crooks, expose con artists, and trap liars! Solve mysteries, explain conundrums, and match wits with evil geniuses! All it takes is paying strict attention to every word of the MindTrap story. It's harder than it looks, because most people picture the stories in their minds, and usually imagine something that isn't there, or overlook a crucial detail. But you can defy the odds. Trap the auctioneer who's trying to sell an old letter addressed to Queen Elizabeth I. How? Because you know she wasn't called "the first" until centuries later when there was a second Queen Elizabeth. Or capture the thief whose victims were dying just before they deposited their paychecks at the bank-just figure out that the killer had poisoned the glue on the bank deposit envelopes. Warning: the pictures that accompany each story may be hazardous to your puzzle-solving skills.

Customer Reviews:
Awful book! Puzzles are retarded and absurd. .......2005-07-25
I truly wish I spent a few more minutes looking into the puzzles contained in the book before making my purchase. The puzzles posed are not puzzles at all, but rather the end result of what you would get if you hired 30 first graders to come up with "brain teasers."
Here's an example of what I'm talking about straight from the book:
During a flight from Brazil to London, the pilot told all the passengers to get out of their seats and to stand at the back of the plane. Why did he do this?
The answer is: A passenger sitting near the front had smuggled a poisonous snake onto the plane and it had escaped.
If you think that "puzzle" is bad, all I can say is that they get worse, much worse.
This would only be mildly amusing if I were back in college and wanted to entertain those who were drunk. Even then, probably not.
Save your money for something that involves actually using your "brain". Purchase this only if you need something to reach the temperature of 451.
Abstract Mind Games.......2003-06-03
I got this book, along with 3 other Sloane & MacHale lateral thinking puzzle books for Christmas one year. At first it seemed like a sorry excuse for a gift, but as I read this one first, I found that it was a challenging endeavor of the mind. Lateral thinking, it seems, is taking a situation and finding a solution that is not the most obvious, but usually the most logical. That said, this is challenging to say the least. A good book for people who enjoy mind games.
Challenging students to think differently.......2001-05-20
I purchased this book to use as one of my classroom resources for a weekly puzzle with 8th grade language arts students. I write one of the puzzles (generally a condensed version) on the board on Monday, and then give the students all week to ponder the puzzle. On Friday, I draw a winner from the bowl of entries. The winner gets a candy bar of his or her choice.
Besides adding excitement to my classroom, the puzzle presents the students with a mental challenge unlike most of their other intellectual endeavors. So much of what is taught at school is initially unknown to the student; however, the best feature of these puzzles is that the intent of many of them isn't to teach something new, but to make the reader think differently about something that is obvious. Week after week many of my students slap their foreheads on Fridays and proclaim, "Of course!" But, as the year has gone by, I have seen a marked increase in the number of correct responses!
Very challenging and fun!.......1999-10-05
I loved this book! It was challenging yet fun. It really makes you think. The questions sound difficult, then when you read the answer, you hit yourself for not thinking of it. I would recommend this book to anyone who has the patience to really sit down and think. It's fun for all ages for any time. From 7 to 70, or from sitting in your living room to in the car during a trip. You'll love this book!
Book Description
Time to check any assumptions at the door: lateral thinking puzzles demand a creative approach, an open mind, and an ability to construct a variety of possible answers before settling on the right one. Many of the questions don't even have enough information on their own for the solver to arrive at the solution; that's why every problem has additional clues to guide you. Get into the swing of things with some simple Warm Ups and Elementary examples before moving on to the more challenging Workout, Strenuous, Super-Strenuous, Crime, and other puzzles collected here.
Customer Reviews:
Packed with challenges.......2006-10-02
This book is full of fun lateral thinking puzzles, some actually based on history, some gruesome, and both quick and easy puzzles as well as hard ones. There are clues included, so you can help people along without giving away the answer. It's the best money I've spent if a party you're having starts to get a little boring. Not to mention the method of thought required to solve the puzzles will help you in every day life.

Brilliant Comedy!.......2004-05-26
Bob Elliott and Ray Goulding were a pair of brilliant and all too little-known comedians who came out of the golden age of radio. Their comedy was quite simply an endless satire of radio broadcasting itself. Actually, "comedians" sounds two obvious for their deadpan, parodistic humor - I think perhaps "comic artists" is more approriate. Instead of telling jokes, this comedic duo performed little plays where humor is created through characterization, irony, and word-play. This is verbal wit and high comedy at its best. Bob and Ray were too subtle to ever become really popular, but they always had a small and devoted following. Their dry, offbeat humor is impossible to adequately describe - you have to experience it to understand it. This award-winning compilation comes from the twilight of their long career - the 1980's. These particular performances come from Bob and Ray's Public Radio Show, and were recorded in front of a live audience, which only adds to the fun. There are dozens of B & R sketches here, including numerous installments of their hilarious mock-soap opera, "Garish Summit". Many classic B & R characters make apperances. Buy these cassettes and be prepared to become delirious with laughter!
"The Best of Bob & Ray" Is Simply the Best!.......2001-09-28
Bob and Ray's low-key humor is perfect for long drives. I have the four volumes of "The Best of Bob & Ray." Each volume has four audiocassettes, each audiocassette with two 30-minute shows that will keep you in stitches and make the miles fly. "Garish Summit" is without a doubt the greatest soap opera ever to make you laugh so hard your nose runs.Volume 1 will have you longing for Wing Po, Traveling Philosopher, to come by and read your woodpile.

I have the four volumes of "The Best of Bob & Ray," and this one is my favorite. The great classic routine "VCR Children" is on it as well as three others of what I think are their best routines: "Transatlantic Bridge," "South Quoddy Airlines," and the "Club of the Month Club." Can't explain it here--you'll just have to listen and laugh till your nose runs.
