Wet behind the ears review makes me really sad.
The fact you're buying a book on surf culture and you
don't know the name david carson, well that's just mind numbing.
I don't even know what to say about the whole "being arty" comment.

Missed opportunity.......2006-12-04

Please be advised that the layout of this book is riddled with jumbled double print in varying type sizes overlaid over other print, making it impossible to read. I suppose that this was done in a failed attempt at being "arty". Make sure that you peruse a copy prior to buying it and then decide if you want to spend the money on a book with illegible text. In fairness, there are some interesting representations of surfing and art, presented chronologically. It's just a shame that the material wasn't presented in a format worthy of the subject.

In reponse, to Shannon David Earle review...As I was reading the book again last night I couldn't help but be amazed at how everything was so easy to read-and at the same time so illogical and chaotic. Something only Carson could make work. This book is critical for any surfer's library as the book not only is extremely well written, but it also incorporates the art it talks about into its page design. Buy it.

Beautiful Book.......2005-09-29

This is the most expansive book on the aesthetics of surfing! The impact on modern popular culture and design in general becomes evident after reading this book. Great writing throughout includes a Tom Wolfe essay.

i consider myself as much of an expert on the history of surfing as one could be without actually having lived through the early days, and while reading through this book I was not only entertained from cover to cover, but actually learned a few new things! The facts are presented along with interesting points colorfully explained. The photos are worth the price of the book alone, but the text adds so much more. This it the best history of surfing i've ever read!

A Lifetime of Research.......2007-01-27

I just finished the book - New Edition. I am stunned by the immense levels of research and photographic documentation that went into it. He got every pivot point along the surfing path over the last 60 years.

Even with the best research tools it would have taken many years to create. Further, only one person - Kampion - could have done such a remarkable job. In his case, it took a lifetime of research. This book will become one of my ten favorite books of all time.

Written to celebrate the nonsense master's 82nd birthday, it follows "you" (an elderly gent in a suit and white moustache) through a physical check-up in some fiendish geriatric clinic. You are measured, prodded, and subjected to all the medical indignities familiar and unfamiliar to the elderly. "You must see Dr. Pollen, our Allergy Whiz, who knows every sniffle and itch that there is... He will check your reactions to thumbtacks and glue, catcher's mitts, leaf mould, and cardigans too. You'll Laugh.......2007-06-02

I first saw this book while visiting friends in a retirement home. When I got home I immediately ordered it from Amazon and placed it on my coffee table. If you are even on the verge of getting older, you will understand Dr. Seuss' adventure to the doctor's office, and appreciate the humor he injects concerning the many tests, etc. one sometimes must tolerate as we age.

Must Have for 60th Birthdays.......2007-05-12

The family has given this book to friends for years as a gift on their 60th birthday. It is a fun look at the aging process and brings laughter from all who have received the book. Usually we have the friend sit on our laps and we read it to them as we would a child. Great stuff..

one of the definitive books on cult films........2003-05-31

This is one of the first serious film books I ever picked up. The picture of ol' Jack Nance from David Lynch's Eraserhead is what caught my eye. After reading the first paragraph of the first chapter, I was hooked.

Written by, arguably, the two best critics around -- J. Hoberman (who writes for the Village Voice) and Jonathan Rosenbaum (who writes for the Chicago Reader) -- this is an excellent look at a bygone era of movie-going. They document the midnight movie circuit that used to exist across the country for films too weird and strange for mainstream consumption. Sadly, most of these theatres are gone now -- swallowed up by the multiplex monster.

These guys clearly did their homework -- their chapters on the early careers of Lynch, Alejandro Jodorowsky, John Waters and George Romero are definitive. Best of all, their writing style is never dry or academic but very readable (it helps that these guys write for weeklies).

This book is a must-have for any fan of cult movies (and esp. the above mentioned directors). I have read it many, many times and it inspired me to be a writer myself. Great stuff.

A CULT CLASSIC IN ITSELF!.......2002-06-08

A lot of these directors have had entire books written about them since this book was published, but the authors manage to make this book so entertaining and fascinating that I've reread it twice-- I usually just read nonfiction once and then use it for reference. If they would put England's The Incredibly Strange Film Show (and the spin-offs Son Of... and For One Week Only)out on DVD, it would rival this book. Until then, this is the most vital source of information on cult movies.

One of my favorite film books.......2001-03-09

Still in print after almost 20 years? You know it has got to be good. This book was an essential part of my film education, turning me on to a dozen great flicks I might never have heard of otherwise.

Fascinating reading!.......1999-08-15

Very good - really eclectic coverage. It has a lot of material on underground films from the late 60s, as well as "Rocky Horror", Alexandro Jodorowsky, and John Waters. Highly recommended.

Almost got it right........2005-10-23

This book is quite useful.
It expands on some races and reintroduces some old classics. like the Winged Elf, the water elf, the Wemic, and the centur.

However it also just copies the entries for dark elves and planetouched races basically straight from the Forgotten realms campaign settingbook.
They could have used the space a little better instead of repeating races that 97% of us have access to. (If you have an interest in this book then its pretty much fact that you already have the Forgotten Realms Campaign setting).

Some of the region feats are nice and the a couple of the prestige classes are going to appeal to my players so for that regard it was worth the purchase price.

Summing up it gathers all the races from the Realms campaign setting and adds in some new ones. Mixes in some new feats, some old ones tweaked and a few prestige classes.

Races of Faerun.......2005-09-20

This book contridicts the Forgotten Realms book written by Ed Greenwood. The elves inpertcular.
The book is put together well, but WoC should get their sources straightened out before they publish them

Helpful and informative, BUT.......2004-09-14

It should be called SOME of the Races of Faerun. The book offers a great deal of information, however it leaves gaps here and there just so it can fill them through another volume. For the price tag of this book I feel it is a bit incomplete. It could contain a lot more info on a lot more races. If you're only looking for general information on the most prominent races of Faerun, this is for you. However it should not be considered THE source of info, as it is anything but complete and thorough.

A necessary book for the lover of Faerun.......2004-03-18

This book is a great resource for any lover of Faerun and the Forgotten Realms. The background on the human subraces adds some great flavour to the Forgotten Realms! The feats and prestige classes are good. And the information about the different races of Faerun is also very helpful (particularly about the planetouched - tieflings, genasi, and aasimar).

Critical info for Faerun.......2004-02-13

Well, this book covers many races for Forgotten Realms. It also adds in a few interesting feats and a few items. It gives much greater depth to all the races already covered in FRCS. However, there is one problem here- if the race already had it's base stats covered in FRCS, only the extra "fluff" is here, none of the "crunch". This means you'll need both books, and note that Race of Faerun is 3.5 and FRCS is 3.0, so there's a little problem here. I'd have prefered a bit less fluff, and the basic race stats redone for all.

However, there are also quite a few interesting new races here, some which were only covered lightly in another supplement. For instance, there are complete rules for playing a Shade or a Wemic.

There is also a lot of background fluff on the various human "races'. This may thrill you or bore you- depending.

Anyway, if you play in the FR, at least one of your group should get this book.
