    Book Description

Terry Winters’s work of the past decade weaves disparate strains of idea, object, and physical operations into the primary logic of his art. His art contains an astonishing array of forms and demonstrates the equally surprising breadth of his artistic language. This retrospective volume continues where the mid-career survey (1992) at the Whitney Museum concluded, presenting the past decade of Winters’s innovative work in paintings, prints, drawings, and artists’ books. Terry Winters presents the ways in which the artist creates sets and subsets of distinctive works that interact with bodies of previous and current work. Also included are images by the artist that have not previously been exhibited or published.
Winters’s work is frequently included in conversations and studies relating to the interplay of art and science, and his recent paintings, drawings, and prints reflect his engagement with scientific and computational systems of thought and presentations of information. For Winters, abstract art has become a vehicle not for “reproducing and inventing form but for harnessing forces.” By utilizing expressive means, “data becomes pictorial and spatial.” This superbly illustrated volume displays the full range of Winters’s newest works and the complex relationships that link them to one another.

Wendy Wasserstein is best known as a Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright, but she has also spent 10 years penning brisk, mostly comic, often touching essays for magazines. Here they are, niftily collected in Shiksa Goddess; or, How I Spent My Forties. Though there's much to be said for her brisk interview with Bette Midler, written in the form of a comic play (if we're to believe Wasserstein, the two of them rowed around Manhattan harmonizing on "Shine On Harvest Moon") and some of the other occasional essays, the heart of the book is her portraiture of her family. She immortalizes her mother, Lola Wasserstein, in a few deft sketches. "Always look nice when you throw out the garbage," Lola warns. "You never know who you might meet." When it comes to cards, "Lola encourages sending 'the very, very best,' a homemade greeting card. A personal citation like 'I love you, Gramma' or 'Mother, I promise next year to be married with three musically inclined children, a co-op, and a degree in dentistry' is worth a thousand words."

The darkest, deepest notes are sounded in her essay on the cancer battle of her late sister, Sandra, the model for the character Sara in Wasserstein's dazzling play The Sisters Rosensweig. The book concludes with a rather heroic account of her pregnancy at age 48, which lives up to its title: "Days of Awe: The Birth of Lucy Jane." At her best, Wasserstein is an essayist of emotional delicacy, intellectual rigor, and an unconquerable funny bone. --Tim Appelo

          Book Description

When Wendy Wasserstein turned forty, she made a To Do list composed mostly of items left over from when she turned thrity. The listincluded the annuals: lose weight, exercise, read more, improve female friendships, improve male friendships, and (left over from her second grade To Do list) become a better citizen. At the end of the list were the larger-than-life unavoidables: move, fall in love, and decide about a baby.

In Shiksa Goddess, her first book of essays in ten years, Wendy writes about each f the quests and midlife obsessions.

On diets and cooking ("I was born to order up . . . My favorite breakfast china has always been a paper cup embossed with a picture of the Parthenon.") . . .

On getting in shape and hiring a personal trainer (Sue is on hand twenty-four hours to say, Stop! In the name of self-love . . . She is a fat-free beacon of light) . . . About the rise of the legendary Mrs. Entenmann, who married the boss at nineteen and went from salesgirl to bakery czarina . . .

On the truth of her denominational heritage (the name Wasserstein was changed from Waterson by a distant relative in order to get his child into an Ivy Leage college and Mount Sinai Medical School) . . .

On buying an apartment--and then seeking refuge from it for a year in a residential hotel ("Life boiled back down to basics: work, friendship, and room service") . . . About attending the Golden Globe Awards . . .

On the traditions of the holidays ("I was very disappointed the first time I saw Plymouth Rock . . . I thought it would be surrounded by Barricini chocolate turkeys, dancing sweet potatoes, and Pilgrims in crepe-paper hats") . . .

On MOther's Day and her mother, Lola Wasserstein ("Lola encourages sending a homemade greeting card. A personal citation like 'I love you, Gramma' or 'Mother, I promise next year to be married with three musically inclined children, a co-op, and a degree in dentistry' is worth thousands of words") . . . on Chekhov . . . George Abbott . . .

And she writes movingly about her sister's battle with breast cancer, and about her own pregnancy at forty-eight and the birth of her first child, Lucy Jane.

2 out of 5 stars Audio CD review: Personal life more interesting than the humor. CD Format problem. .......2007-01-20

I have never read Ms. Wasserstein before, but was intrigued. Unfortunately, I found that however great her essays or plays may be, they do not translate well in audio CD. The first 3/5 CDs are largely devoted to "fluff" topics, and the humor is very tongue in cheek. But, I found none of it terribly funny--sort of the usual worn out jokes regarding datable men, apartment renovation, lunch with one's mother, trying to diet, etc. Easy to skip over fluff in a book, but not so easy on a CD. This is made even more problematic by the audio CD format. You cannot fast foward on the CDs; there are no internal "chapters". So, if you take out the CD from your car or computer, be prepared to lose the first 30 minutes you listened to and have to start all over again next time. Crazy! Never seen a CD like this before! The computer indeed shows everything as one giant track... Also, each of the 5 CDs has less than an hour on it. Seems like more could have been squeezed in... they need to fix this if they re-issue these.

I do think overall the CD set is worth purchasing for the last 2 CDs, which are candid accounts of her sister's battle with cancer, and her own fertility procedures, and the eventual arrival of her daughter. For those of us hoping to have a child in advanced years, and fascinated by Ms. Wasserstein's ability to do it at 48, it's a fairly sobering tale. It's not even clear to me from the rather long account of the fertility treatments, which occurred over many years, whether Ms. Wasserstein was the genetic mother of the child, or if she ultimately used egg donation to achieve the pregnancy. It is also clear she spent a fortune on all the procedures. Moreover, the delivery and aftermath of it were obviously trying for the author and her entire family, although there are moments of levity in the account.

          3 out of 5 stars Egocentric Chronicles.......2001-07-25

I bought this book for light reading while traveling this summer. I understand that most of the pieces were put together for publications like New Yorker, Harper's, etc. But really, I think we could live without all the gratuitous name-dropping and constant self-loathing references to her weight problem. In addition Ms. Wasserstein makes it clear, through her sublimated anger, that she carries a grudge because she didn't realize her true potential as a female until she was grown. Hey, me too! It's the same old song, having to re-learn the rules of life as a woman with brains. Hey, me too! Get over it. If she would just get on with the stories, without the long and tedious set-up they might be amusing. But the road she takes us on is an old one. We women have all been down that road and back. Life goes on... Too bad she uses such references as crutches to prop up a lack of cutting edge wit and wisdom. Dorothy Parker, she ain't. This was a book I had a hard time picking up.

          5 out of 5 stars Great stuff.......2001-06-08

This book contains 25 essays, collected from The New York Times, The New Yorker, and a variety of other sources, by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Wendy Wasserstein. The book takes us on a funny yet touching roller-coaster ride from the devestating loss of a loved one to the joy of childbirth. Wasserstein is a very human narrator whose humor and heart allow her to take the most personal situation and make it into a universal truth.

5 out of 5 stars Essays that deserve a very long run.......2001-05-13

Wendy Wasserstein's essays are thoughtful, smart, poignant, sometimes riotously funny, and kind. Like their author they are approachable and unpretentious. She explains in her Preface, " I seem to write continually about politics, the arts, and women's equality. But I am not ashamed of my concurrent interest in real estate, diet, and my mother." It is at the confluence of her dozen or so passions that one is so helplessly and happily drawn in.

Wasserstein's many concerns - all delightfully described - range from the ridiculous (dieting, Manhattan real estate, Hollywood stars) to the sublime: family (especially Mom and sisters), friends, personal history, New York theater (she adores it, and has since childhood), the importance of art to education and to life. "For children, the arts are not simply icing on the cake. They are a way of including everyone in a joint, and joyous, venture." In addition: love, loyalty, and the terrific inner (and outer) life of their author. She has a lot of great friends, and they say some very funny things sometimes. She has never married, and has a take on that state of affairs that is a pleasure to read.

Wasserstein chronicles the harrowing (because premature and complicated, necessitating many good doctors and a group of supportive friends ) birth of her daughter - and the months following - in " Days of Awe: The Birth of Lucy Jane," a piece that is at once poignant, full of information, and at times, so funny as to provoke a side ache.

The Wasserstein family of origin is a constant source of humor and is reflected upon with tenderness that is never cloying - just full of love.

I loved this collection and marvel at the ability of its author to talk so smartly and passionately about herself, to care deeply about improving the world, and to work toward that end - while at the same time conveying quite clearly to the reader that when she's through, she'll be right there - in order to hear what might be your own very interesting story. A great read.

          5 out of 5 stars Terrific--A real treat.......2001-05-13

This collection of essays Wasserstein wrote for newspapers and magazines, including the NYTimes and The New Yorker, also includes one new essay, the hilarious and deeply affecting "How I spent My Forties."

All the essays are strong, and many have moments that made me laugh out loud. Even though there are 35 essays across the 235 pages, this book does have a bit of a narrative thread to it, which provides the book's greatest pleasures. Her essays about her beloved sister Sandra, who battled cancer, and her own efforts to have a child form the emotional core of the book. Wasserstein feels that, as you get older, life becomes sadder and more humorours, citing her sister's pleasure at the weight loss caused by chemo. This is a terrific collection.

The title, by the way, comes from the first essay, a New Yorker humor piece in response to that brief period when it seemed everyone (Tom Stoppard, Madeleine Albright, even "New Yorker" Hilary Clinton--the NY Post ran a headline that said something like OY VEY, HILARY'S JEWISH) was discovering their jewish roots. So Wasserstein "discovered" her episcopalean roots. It's a funny essay in an excellent collection.

          Book Description

Celebrated playwright and magnetic wit Wendy Wasserstein has been firmly rooted in New York’s cultural life since her childhood of Broadway matinees, but her appeal is universal. Shiksa Goddess collects thirty-five of her urbane, inspiring, and deeply empathic essays–all written when she was in her forties, and all infused with her trademark irreverent humor.

The full range of Wasserstein’s mid-life obsessions are covered in this eclectic collection: everything from Chekhov, politics, and celebrity, to family, fashion, and real estate. Whether fretting over her figure, discovering her gentile roots, proclaiming her love for ordered-in breakfasts, lobbying for affordable theater, or writing tenderly about her very Jewish mother and her own daughter, born when she was forty-eight and single, Wasserstein reveals the full, dizzying life of a shiksa goddess with unabashed candor and inimitable style.

When the Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright turned 40, she made a To Do list, most of which repeated the items she had listed when she turned 30. In Shiksa Goddess, her first book of essays in ten years, Wasserstein takes on these and other midlife obsessions with her famous, appealing humor.

5 out of 5 stars How we will miss the Shiksa Goddess.......2006-11-03

Wendy Wasserstein's untimely death in the winter of 2006, at the young age of 55, robs us of what should have been decades more of her witty, generous-spirited but sharp, wise feminst humor. These essays are a delight, giving us much over which to ponder and chuckle, even in our sadness, knowing as we do that the mind and spirit creating them have left us. Read them to savor baby boom feminism in mid-life, and to honor the memory of a great woman of letters.

5 out of 5 stars Very clever smart chick lit!.......2006-07-10

Wendy Wasserstein has won Pulitzer prizes and it shows in this book! Of course it's "just chick lit" but still very well written, well thought out chick lit that's a cut above the rest in my opinion. It's not as good as the Sex and the City series - on tv, that is - but heading in that direction!

4 out of 5 stars Gotta Love Wendy!.......2005-04-05

Wendy Wasserstein, the acerbic, often-hilarious Pulitzer-Prize winning playwright, brings her trademark dry humor to this sweet collection of essays. Ms. Wasserstein writes what she knows about-theatre, New York City, looking for love, trying to lose weight, friends, and making the decision to have her first child at the age of 48.

Many of these essays are magical, but could be an acquired taste. For those of you who love biting autobiographical satire can look no further.

              Book Description

Screenwriting from the Heart is the answer to today's formulaic, by-the-numbers Hollywood films. As a successful screenwriter and teacher, James Ryan has distilled the content of his popular workshops into this indispensable guide to developing dramatic and passionate screenplays based on compelling characters. Maintaining that writing by formula results in contrived and untrue screenplays, Ryan's technique is based on the premise that our best work comes from the heart - from the inside out. This book shows screenwriters how to free up the unconscious imagination in order to use what they excavate from deep within themselves to craft a screenplay.

Drawing on examples from dozens of screenplays to help illustrate his technique for creating complex and magnetic characters, In the first half of his book, Ryan helps screenwriters to first discover and create their characters and to use them as the source for the story. In the second half of the book, he offers a step-by-step guide to crafting a script - from finding a story and developing the pitch, to preparing an outline, free-writing, and creating a great scene. Ryan also offers practical advice about how to continue to grow as a screenwriter, and provides some realistic ways to get a finished screenplay noticed by the right people.

Eleven exercises are included in the book for the reader's use in practicing and honing skills for getting past the obvious choices to create resonant, fresh, and original scripts.

5 out of 5 stars Second Subtitle Says It All.......2006-08-16

This is a great book, unfortunate title, but great book. It's subtitle regarding compelling characters is on the nose - which in this case is a good thing.

This is probably not the first screenwriting book you should read, but definately one you should read before you try to fill that empty page. Realize that screenplays are highly formatted, and the writer can't stray too far from that structure and expect to have his work read. But, if you have read Ackerman, Field, Hicks, Hunter, Kitchen, Walker, and/or Russin & Downs there is STILL MUCH TOO LEARN in the pages of this book! For a different way of developing your story within that strict screenplay format (maybe THE way for your style of writing or conceptualizing a story) I highly recommend "Screenwriting from the Heart". My only complaint is that it seems Ryan hasn't written any other books since.

5 out of 5 stars Well worth buying.......2004-07-18

I own a variety of books on screenwriting and have to say this is one of the better ones. He writes well and, unlike some other writers on the subject, he doesn't propose a formulaic approach.

Ryan's concentration on character acts as a welcome counterbalance to the current proliferation of plot-based action movies. If this book results in more engrossing films, then James Ryan will deserve to be given an Oscar.

4 out of 5 stars feed the roots.......2000-11-26

James Ryan's idea of writing from the heart reinforces confidence in the hearts of novice writers. As opposed to most of the other approaches which scare the novice showing that the writing process is an alien mechanism which has to be learnt from the seasoned Gurus or some institutions, rather than by intuition. Ryan demystifies the myth behind the writing process as, "there is nothing very abstract or academic about writing; it is an art form, yes, but first and foremost it is a craft." (pp. 5) While reading the first half of the book, this starting assurance has helped me to proceed further with enthusiasm. But, somewhere along the line, I found a question which was bothering me. That is, "How do you judge your own work whether you have achieved a genuine product of your heart or synthetic product of overflowing intellect, based on this approach?" I didn't find the answer to this question yet, but, this question is not meant as a complaint. James Ryan explains how the intangible creative flow from the heart can be triggered consciously by choosing an object. This exercise sounded very interesting and promising. Over all, this is a very useful book for both beginning writers and experienced writers.

One small comment I cant resist sharing with the co-readers and the author: On the one hand, Ryan advocates the ORIGINALITY that a writer can discover from his/her work, and on the other hand he tells us how there are already existing/fixed styles and types of films. This comes as a slight contradiction in the book: if every writer starts respecting his/her own originality, he/she can't stop it at the content only..it could eventually extend to inventing a new style or type!

I wrap up again summing up that this is a great book which gives a deep insight into the complex writing process without scaring the novice writer.. and to an experienced writer, it serves as a tool to re-examine if he/she is on the right track. This book shows us how we can control the final product, the screenplay by working on the central controlling element, the heart, just like how we can affect the external beauty of a plant by just feeding its roots. 'the heart.'

5 out of 5 stars Smart and Artful.......2000-07-07

I really liked this book because it helped me in so many unexpected ways. I liked how he showed me that a screenplay can be one or five acts, not just three, as the formula tells us it should be. His Free-Write exercises were just great. They actually broke me of this block I was having with my work and lead me to some very interesting places. They helped to make my work more original, which, right there, is worth the price of the book.

This is not a dumbed down book. It is really smart, tough, and very original. Even if you don't agree with what he says, you have to admit he makes you really think about screenwriting in a very fresh and original way. And I do agree with him that without great characters a screenplay will never be great.

I thought is was very well written and I recommend you give it a try. It will broaden your skills.

              2 out of 5 stars Poorly written!.......2000-06-03

Let me first state that this is the first book I have read on the subject. This book definitely has some really helpful exercises and ideas to help a budding screenwriter, like myself. I am however disappointed in the writing; a major flaw in an instructional book about... writing.

The author seems somewhat self-important. He likes to use large or obscure words where smaller, more common ones would not only suffice, but would not only suffice, but would probably work better; I believe I have a good vocabulary, but had to dust off the dictionary to read this one. The book is also poorly researched. Two examples: in the introduction, mentioned "Hollywood films such as `Operation Condor,'" a film from Hong Kong (obvious to anyone who has actually seen the film, since the dialog is dubbed); in a synopsis of the film "Pulp Fiction," the author totally butchers the timeline, and states that BUTCH (Bruce Willis) only briefly meets JULES and VINCENT (Jackson and Travlota respectively), neglecting to mention that BUTCH kills VINCENT while VINCENT is camped out waiting to kill BUTCH (the mention of this would defeat the argument he uses the story to demonstrate).

I must repeat that the book was helpful in several ways. I would imagine there are much better books on the subject, and recommend you seek those first.

As someone already said, the book contains advice that is too loose preflop and not aggresive enough post-flop. I think if you seriously applied everything in the book you would most likely lose. Unfortunately for me this was my first poker book I ever bought. As I was very knew to the game I found the advice on reading the board useful and finding what hand qualifies as the "nuts". You can learn the basics of counting outs and pot odds in books that are much better than this.

2 out of 5 stars Sorry Ken, but the book sucks.......2007-04-04

Now that online poker literally pays all my bills, I can come back to this book with a much deeper understanding of the game (and this book). Let me start off: there are much better limit hold 'em books for the beginner. The advice is weak-tight and the starting preflop hands are far from optimal (I think he recommends limping J9s in middle position and other -EV advice). Also, there is a lot of useless information for the beginner - specifically statistics. A beginner shouldn't be worrying about how many combinations of hands there are or how often we get dealt a pocket pair.. NO. they should be worried about the reasoning behind the preflop raise or why not to call a preflop raise with KJo from a tight player in early position.

1 out of 5 stars Another Warren Anti-Fan.......2007-02-24

Ken Warren's "Winner's Guide" was my first poker book, and like a lot of others here, I had to unlearn a lot. But more than that, I was just horribly confused. I thought it was because I was new to the game that I didn't understand the strategies he lays forth. Now I know it's because those strategies don't make sense.

Even before I knew so many people disliked his books, I chose to disregard almost all of his advice because of his comments that border on bigotry. According to him, people with tattoos are terrible players, as are attractive women (tell that to Jennifer Harmon, heh heh). If he makes such obvious bad recommendations, I really can't trust that any of his advice is solid.

I don't think Ken Warren is a great author for poker. I've read a lot of excerpts from THIS book that I just don't agree with. And the nail in the coffin is that a book about TEXAS HOLD'EM actually has a five-card hand on the cover.

1 out of 5 stars plenty of better poker books out there.......2007-01-06

This is a terrible book. I am shocked to see the average rating of 4 stars. Even if i changed my mind and said this book is OK, why would you purchase it when you can buy GREAT poker books instead? For absolute beginners, get "Poker for Dummies". Then if you want to learn more, move on to learn Limit hold'em. I suggest Lee Jones' "Winning Low Limit Hold'em" or Ed Miller's "Small Stakes Hold'em". Then move onto No-Limit hold'em, i suggest Dan Harrington's "Harrington on Hold'em" series of books.

There's no better teacher than poker pro Ken Warren when it comes to teaching the basics of Texas hold 'em for profit: he's a master of the game and has developed his own successful, tested strategy for winning: a strategy covered both in philosophy and in specific game examples here in KEN WARREN TEACHES TEXAS HOLD 'EM. Competing titles on the topic outlines generalities: Warren will walk you through specific game options, covers all aspects from raising to special flops and overcalling, and pairs rules with advanced plays.
