Vast collection of marks.......2006-11-27
The photography in this book is minimal, black and white and grainy. Extensive and interesting background information, though (126 pages worth). VERY extensive coverage of maker's marks for all countries. Some marks are so small as to need a magnifying glass, however. (Hence the four stars)

The book was in or above the condition described and is the product I was looking for. I was glad that it was readily available through Amazon.

I bought this one, along withe another (Sterling Flatware Identification & Value Guide) for my mom and she uses it a lot. I think she uses the other one more but she always has both on hand. It has a lot of good info on how to id a piece, great pictures of hallmarks etc.
The classic book on antique English silver!.......2001-03-24
This book is a must have if you collect antique English silver. If you only want one book on the subject this is it. If you collect American or European silver, this book would not be my first choice. You can't get more info on antique English silver including hallmarks, history, and the different pieces of flatware and holloware that were made with any other Silver book I have ever read.
too much of nothing.......2000-10-28
Talk, talk, talk. So much information about city hallmarks and nothing about purity marks. No way to really identfy general items that a novice collector would have. Is it real or not? Talks about fakes and again nothing about standards of silver and what they are. High brow attitude toward the subject with little or no information on Continental European silver in detail. Too little to late!

I haven't used any other hallmark books, but this one has seems to have it all. I like it because it is small in size, packed full of information, including great history and easy to understand. I went to England and bought several silver pieces and used this book (after the fact) to find out its history.

The Bennetts: An Acting Family is a chronicle of one of the royal families of stage and screen. The saga begins with Richard Bennett, a small-town Indiana roughneck who grew up to be one of the bright lights of the New York stage during the early twentieth century. In time, however, Richard's fame was eclipsed by that of his daughters, Constance and Joan, who went to Hollywood in the 1920s and found major success there.
Constance became the highest-paid actress of the early 1930s, earning as much as $30,000 a week in melodramas. Later she reinvented herself as a comedienne in the classic comedy Topper, with Cary Grant.. After a slow start as a blonde ingenue, Joan dyed her hair black and became one of the screen's great temptresses in films such as Scarlet Street. She also starred in such lighter fare as Father of the Bride. In the 1960s, Joan gained a new generation of fans when she appeared in the gothic daytime television serial Dark Shadows.
The Bennetts is also the story of another Bennett sister, Barbara, whose promising beginnings as a dancer gave way to a turbulent marriage to singer Morton Downey and a steady decline into alcoholism.
Constance and Joan were among Hollywood's biggest stars, but their personal lives were anything but serene. In 1943, Constance became entangled in a highly publicized court battle with the family of her millionaire ex-husband, and in 1951, Joan's husband, producer Walter Wanger, shot her lover in broad daylight, sparking one of the biggest Hollywood scandals of the 1950s.

Outstanding insight - a true biography.......2007-09-19
This biography of the generally forgotten acting dynasty, the Bennetts, is a tour de force. While father Richard Bennett is long forgotten, daughters Constance and Joan Bennett are still accessible through a number of classic films ("What Price Hollywood" and "Topper" for Constance and "Scarlet Street" and "The Woman in the Window" for Joan, among others).
The author has captured the personalities of each Bennett. So many biographers fall into the trap of providing superficial detail around a chronology of the subject's life, but not so Mr Kellow. He has managed to bring alive the autocratic Richard Bennett and his 3 daughters, the troubled alcoholic Barbara, the mercurial, opportunistic Constance and the refined but passionate Joan. The book is cleverly written to move between each of their lives and Kellow benefited from the co-operation of many surviving members of the family. He has also managed to create a very real sense of the period in which the story is evolving from the girls rebellious behaviour in the roaring twenties, through career highs for Constance in Hollywood in the thirties and Joan's emergence as a femme fatale in the forties to both actresses move to the stage in the fifties as film work dried up. They were much married and all the details about their stormy relationships are vividly recreated, not in a gossipy tone but creating portraits of intelligent woman who were not afraid to take risks, particularly Constance.
This is a very clever well written book.
Well researched and presented.......2006-06-01
This well researched and presented book is a fine addition to anyone's library of books about Classic Hollywood or about the Broadway stage. The Bennett family were hard-working and talented performers, extremely famous in their day, but not as well-remembered today as they deserve. Their stories are full of human drama and Brian Kellow tells them in detail, without any wiff of the snide, nasty edge far too many show business books have today. He's honest about the faults of his subjects, yet compassionate about their humanity.
Well Worth Reading.......2005-05-24
For anyone interested in Hollywood's golden era, this book is a must! Far superior than The Bennett Playbill which was published in the 1970's with Joan and a ghost writer, this book is exhaustively researched and provides a much fuller picture of father Richard and daughters Constance, Joan and the ill fated Barbara. Fans of the tv show Dark Shadows will remember Joan, but probably a lot fewer remember Constance who was one of the top film stars in the early 30's only to be washed up in films by the end of the decade. Joan had a much longer film career, though it took awhile for hers to catch fire. All the marriages, scandals and career highs and lows are covered in depth and Kellow provides a critical evalution of their many film roles. The narrative does skip back and forth between family members, but Kellow does a good job keeping the narrative flowing and after a few chapters the reader will adjust to it. The Bennetts may not have ranked as high as the Barrymores, but they rank right up there with other Hollywood dynasties.
The Bennett Sisters and Father.......2004-12-21
Brian Kellow has done a wonderful job in telling the personal and professional stories of the acting Bennett Sisters and their father theatrical legend Richard Bennett. This book really fills a gap and is so well done that it would be difficult to imagine a better book about the Bennetts unless there were individual books on Constance, Joan, Barbara, and Richard Bennett. I would have liked a listing of the various plays that particularly Constance Bennett starred in. This versatile and glamorous star appeared in the Cole Porter musical "Silk Stockings" and this was not discussed in the excellent text. This is a small complaint and I think this book is a must for fans of Joan and Constance Bennett and for great books about show business. There are also some wonderful photographs and that alone should induce the reader to buy this book!
Finally!.......2004-12-14
At long last, someone has tackled the fascinating story of the Bennett family. The result was well worth the wait. Kellow's book is enthralling, nicely balanced, objective, and well-researched. Anyone interested in Joan or Constance Bennett or even in film history will enjoy this book.

These arrangements are based on recordings from between 1910 and 1940 of Eastern European immigrant musicians who played traditional Jewish dance music for weddings and other celebrations. Many of these pieces were transcribed to help teach Klezmer styling to participants of the biennial Midwest Klezmer Workshop. The arrangements have been prepared to accommodate different ensemble instrumentation, with many parts partially or completely doubling each other. The score edition includes a full performance CD of all 10 tracks.

Well, while it may be a little pricy, this is the best Klezmer book on the market! I have personally seen the Maxwell St Klezmer Archives, and these are the same charts they are using, just cleaned up (let me tell you--the charts are a mess!). From the traditional (i.e. Lebedikh un Freilach) to the arranged (i.e. Russian Sher) to the solo (i.e. Zol Zayn Gelept) to the zany (i.e. the MATZOrena) This book has it all! As an aspiring klezmer band leader, I know that I would be no where without this book. However, Amazon seems to have it out of stock (more evidence of its greatness!). Back to basics.......2007-01-12
While this is biulled as a DND products, its really an advancement of the rules. The main differences are thatwhereas DND is all about you +5 Vorlam singing celestial greatbastardsword of carrot slicing, and every mage exists to cast greater delayed machinegun thermonuclear lightingball of earthquake creation, and the really balanced greater diety prestige class, this is more about the skills you have as a character. Magic has a serious risk of backfiring and is generally less powerful, but needs more creativity to use and is generally more satisfying. Combat has been streamlined, and the feats system has been reworked. You can take a feat multiple times for greater effects, and every class has different core abilities you can spend "tokens" on to power, and you build up dokens in various ways. There are more classes and they can be customised a great deal.
The book itself is well laid out with a useful index and some good quality black and white artwork. If you are looking for a good alternitive to the mayhem of general dnd, this is well worth a look.
Cook & Mearls hits the nail on the head.......2006-09-03
I thoroughly enjoyed this rule book. As several other reviewers have stated, I too am tired of the prestige classing, superpowering, magic hogging heroes that D&D now turns out with 3rd edition. Very few campaigns survive for long in the current world order unless you supply the characters with loads of magic and money, and let them destroy all opponents that they encounter. Gone are the days when you had a beefy fighter with a masterwork weapon, and good armor. Now, a beefy fighter has to have magical armor and a +5 vorpal sword in order to feel successful.
Mike Mearls and Monty Cook change all of that. Their mechanics and saavy rulesets for characters enable characters to get by on skills and standard weaponry. Magic becomes "magical" again, and wins back all the mystery it loses in the D&D world, where everyone has a +5 Vorpal Sword and a Dragon for a familiar. Even if you do not adopt it wholesale, there are enough nuggets herein to enhance the 3rd edition rules, to bring the magic back to the game.

most of my d & d games are very little magic and i hate the go to that magic wal-mart games were you go to buy this and that, always trying to make your character better. this system does away with that. your character is the great fighter not you have great magic items that make your character a great fighter. a must have for anyone that is tired of the magic wal-mart magic shopping lists.
An Absolute Must Buy.......2005-09-06

Iron Heroes is an absolute must buy. This is the best D20 book published to date. I cannot say enough about it. The game mechanics and the overall flavor are almost perfecct. Kudos to Mike Mearls.
Want to play like Conan, Sinbad or in Lankmar?.......2005-08-10
Iron Heroes is a variant Dungeon & Dragons player's handbook. While the traditional D&D settings offer several different styles of play, it does not work for several classic fantasy settings.
Settings like Conan the Barbarian, Sinbad the Sailor, or The Lankhmar tales of Fafhrd & the Gray Mouser, where the heroes rely on wits and steel to survive against monsters and evil wizards. That's what Iron Heroes provides, a setting where the fighter is king and magic is rare.
The classes in this book are based on fighting;
Armiger: Knight in Armor, Hunter: Tracking and tactics, Barbarian: Raging warrior, Archer: Master of the Bow, Executioner: Assassin, Man-at-Arms: Basic Warrior, Weapon Master: Master of one weapon, Thief: Dirty Fighter, Harrier: Mobile fighter.
This book modifies several rules;
Skill Groups: Spend 1 rank in a group to get 1 rank in all skills in that group
Feat Mastery: Feats that get stronger with additional levels
It also introduces several new rules;
Armor providing damage resistance
Base Defense Score for when you are caught with your chain mail down
Reserve Hit Points to heal your self in a world without Clerics.
While it would be tricky to play these classes in a normal D&D game, there are several new ideas here that can be adapted. Or if you just want to try a different style without having to learn an entirely new system, then this book may be for you.
This book is an excellent example of how the rules of D&D can be adapted to a setting. The rules can be adapted to fit several TV & Movie settings as well, it would work for everything from Buffy the Vampire Slayer to the Lord of the Rings.
Overall, a very good book!
