Authenticating Jules Cheret Artwork and Posters.......2006-02-23
This is the authoritative source for all the artwork and posters of Jules Cheret, who perfected color lithography in the late 1800's. There are a number of color slides of original Jules Cheret posters plus excellent descriptive information to help one identify a suspected Jules Cheret poster. The catalog is by theme or advertiser without an index or table of contents to help one located the exact page where, let's say, Moulin-Rouge or Olympia might start. This does then force scanning to find the start of the catagory one might want - an inconvenience. In spite of this, once you discover the catagory area, the material is informative and precise enough to help with identification.

could have been more useful if..........2006-11-05
I've used this several times over the years, but frequently I am frustrated that there are very few of the most needed poses, such as clothed people standing, walking and sitting. I mean the real basic stuff, without too much gestural attitude. The nudes section of the book is well done, but in the clothed figures section, there's too much space wasted on gimmicky poses like "Gangster with Violin Case" and "French Maid Dusting". Also, some of the dark-clothed figures have so little detail showing, they might as well be black silhouettes. I think they should have concentrated more on making this a useful tool for illustrators and artists and less on making it "entertaining". Sometimes I want to throw it out in disgust, but you never know, I might need a photo of a "Vicar Asleep In a Rocking Chair".
Extremely excellent, multi-angled- comprehensive photo reference.......2006-06-11
Wouldn't it be great if we had a single, one-stop reference for figures with & without clothes, with props & in action- including multiple angles of each pose on every single page? Well, we *do* have this comprehensive reference(!)- it's just difficult to keep it in print...
The Illustrator's Figure Reference Manual is a phenomenally comprehensive piece of work- and a truly *GREAT* resource for every working artist. Even if the exact pose you need isn't in this book, you're bound to find *something* of extreme value here. It begins fantastically enough with an entire nude figure section- a single female & male model, each shot from *many* different angles. It's 54 pages- 27 for each model- out of the book's approximately 250 pages total. What makes this section so valuable is that each page has just one pose, but again- many angles/photos are given. This gives us an accurate way to understand how the figure changes when rotated, except that it's the camera that rotates, not the model. High, middle and low angles are shown, with the figure standing, kneeling, sitting, and laying down. This multi-angled approach is used throughout the remainder of the book. All photos are in color, but they're so muted & slightly faded, they could easily be mistaken for being in black & white. Single figures *and* clothed couples are represented in a wide variety of situations. Common everyday props are often used, including chairs, tables, sports items, and various hand-held objects. Hard-hitting action poses are *avoided*, as well as extreme camera distortion and perspective. This is meant to be an 'everyday-common-average' and 'likely-to-see-on-a-regular-basis' photo reference. It's the best *one-stop book* I've ever seen on this subject to date!
My copy is copyrighted 1987 by Quarto, ISBN 1555210333, and is published by Chartwell, a division of Book Sales Inc. It's been reprinted: 1990, 1991, 1992, 1994, 1996, etc. It contains over 5,500 photos: from over 200 individual poses- seen from 24 different angles. It's definitely worth getting- if you can find a decent price! My highest recommendation!
Rare source for CLOTHED poses.......2003-07-28
I'm doing cartoons, which always involve people wearing clothes. Working from nude poses is helpful, but I still have to work out the clothes. This book is the only one I have found so far with photographs of clothed poses (anime drawing books are a good source for drawings of clothed poses). Especially helpful is the "rotation" of the models so that numerous angles are shown, from each of 3 different eye levels.
Also, nude poses seem to explore all the different positions a body can get into, which are not typical of the way people stand, sit, move, etc., in life - what I'm trying to draw. The photos of clothed models in this book do reflect "real life" poses.
The main reason I did not give 5 stars is that even though this book is very good, and I recommend it highly, I wish it had more poses, particularly ones which illustrate additional common poses.
Great reference.......2003-06-27
This is such a good idea, one wonders what took so long to get it done. The manual is a hefty hardcover, designed to last. Very comprehensive in giving you 5,000 poses of people doing ordinary things from excercising, to primping before a mirror, to dancing alone or with a partner, to laying around on the floor. The models are photographed from eight different points of view. They are not unnaturally posed, however. More like a stop-motion camera caught them "in a moment of time".
The section on Nudes alone is worth the price of the book. If you've ever had problems finding a model to pose nude, or if you just want to sketch at three in the morning, this is the book for you. The photos are not as close-up as they might be, but they are really good at capturing the movement(or non-movement)of the subject.
I can see alot of potential for this manual beyond sketching, drawing and painting.Animation, anyone?
If you're an artist you will really like this book.

The Only One of Its Kind - for Illustrators.......2001-05-07
This book contains more than 5000 black-and-white photos of men and men in a wide range of poses. Each pose is photographed from 24 angles and enables the illustrator to find the desired one.
I cannot find a book that covers a more extensive range of poses than this. A truly useful reference for illustrators.

An invaluable resource - well worth searching for!.......1999-09-08
As a graphic artist and illustrator, I have yet to find a more practical and immediately useful reference than this wonderful book. Not only does it provide a fantastic resource of poses and positions for both male and female anatomy, but they provide a complete 360 degree profile of each pose ( as well as above and below ) to take the guess work out of perspective work with figures. I cannot recommend this reference highly enough!

Book Description
Bill O’Reilly is a man who believes he is a voice of reason. He calls for boycotting Canada, says Adolf Hitler would have been a card-carrying member of the ACLU, and thinks Hurricane Katrina victims seen carrying televisions should be shot on sight.
Amann and Breuer – the creators of the hugely popular website www.sweetjesusihatebilloreilly.com — take a close look at O’Reilly’s own assertions and arguments — taken from his TV and radio shows, books and columns — to expose him for what he is: a self-righteous boob and a sham newsman. The ongoing themes explored in Sweet Jesus, I Hate Bill O'Reilly are that O’Reilly is a bit crazy, not all that sharp and, as the authors put it, about “as self-aware as a legume.” The result is a hilariously funny book, a great read for anyone who enjoys seeing a puffed-up blowhard taken down a notch or two — whether they’re an O’Reilly hater, fan, or something in between.
Customer Reviews:
Facts on short supply.......2007-09-01
The truth is; if you looked hard enough I'm sure you could find some facts to bash O'Reilly. Unfortunately this author hasn't looked for a single one. I'm glad I read someone else's copy and didn't have to pay for this rubbish.
do NOT waste your money in this inferior publication........2007-03-27
Inferior Publication- couldn't expect anything better from this bad gift I got from a "Friend" who sees the light...
As expected, in the authors' minds, Hero and righteous Bill Reilly, the righteous media speaker that all Americans who really love America should follow- is a man for the elite media and the author is right but for a detail: for the INTELLECTUAL ELITE Media and intellectual elite people, not for the deadly brain and damaged personalities of the inferior and professional liberal parasites, that unable to make money in the traditional market for merit, insult others intelligence, when criticizing their own shadow, never providing however a solution.
These inferior liberals, are the reason why Americans are so hated. As a foreigner, conservator and traditional, before coming to American, I thought Americans were all like the hero and beloved Bill Reilly, not these inferior and professional liberal parasites who monkey indoctrinate most Americans towards their suicidal agenda against the Western civilization. Liberals are extremely hypocrite.
For example: It is well known that one of the richest cheap leftist and liberal man in the world, has business in South America with extreme conservator capitalists that politically hate and do not support what this leftist European American preaches, yet this "American" chooses to make business with his political enemy for what it is good for the businesses.
He prefers to have business with a man in SA who supports Israel and fights the Islamo fascism terror all over the world, hiding from the American media that he is really engaged politically, but to the point that business start to get hurt, then he forgets everything and make business with who he would call evil- for the sake of the money god.
Why the authors of this book do not criticize this emperor- because unable to get a life traditionally, with honor, these authors, in my opinion, prostitute themselves to those who help them fight for their miserable slice of bread.Hypocrites- That's what makes foreigners hate you.INFERIOR.
While pointing fingers to others (Reilly) and calling them capitalists, liberals are the ones who collaborate with Islamists, making money as a result, without sharing with those they say they defend their Rights of. ACLU is the most hypocritical example why Americans are so hated abroad. hypocrite, indoctrinators, manipulators, not taking a cause unless it brinks them glory. With inferior resumes...professional parasites of the contemporary society, not making a life by merit, but by collaborating with Islamists and piggy Oil capitalists. Oppressors in the Universities,
Only liberals and the authors' buddies can speak.
Imperialists, Stock market Hedge Funds holders, while most indoctrinated by them are starving and blindly being used. In terms of philanthropy, professional crooks and fakers. no one collaborates towards the best of civilization than conservators and Republicans.
Believe me what I say:
Americans are hated abroad as a result of the bestiality and inferior manners liberals are trying to input as the right thing to do.
Liberals are classic double standard supporters. Some terror v victims are victims, some do not deserve pity and compassion. liberalism is a disease and a cancer in full metastasis. it carries all intrinsic imperialism and piggy capitalist reason why you Americans are so hated.
The authors are low standard chicken., They were perfect material for a good conversation at a tea party. hey authors, in my opinion, you are the dumb and you carry all bad adjectives you call righteous Sir Bill Reilly
Accept my suggestions:
Get a life by being a decent human being, studying something that helps and enhances knowledge to the civilization such as medicine and engineering, and if you are too dumb to do so-
Go back to the KITCHEN.
BACK TO THE KITCHEN.THE CAKE IS BURNING, INCOMPETENT.
What you are going to do now authors and fake human defenders:
Kill me, as I was threatened, for screaming out what I think about you and the reason why you Americans are hated, discriminate me saying I'm an inferior foreigners or suffer a Kafkanin Catharses and become human beings.
BTW, you criticize Bush (I do not fully support him) and the state dept, b/c he is bad for your financial business, you oppressors and fake defenders of the poor.
Wake up Americans:
Freedom of Speech only to the oppressors of the left, not to you.
While they scream: look ate the rare bird (sucker), they take over your life and endangers the western civilization- transforming America in the news Islamists state of America.
BTW, "intellectuals" who wrote this piece of bloody hell useless brochure:
Many of my beloved Friends are Moslems, not Islamists like yours. Do you know the difference?
Back to the Kitchen. many women in my opinion are better machos than what you show to be- and that's my opinion- Oppressors.
Bill, we love you forever; Long life to you- beloved fellow and BTW, you are extremely handsome and elegant- A True Lord, unlike the authors.
And the TRUE G-d Help me by showing I'm wrong, b/c I'm 100 % right, to this very moment.
Hey Authors, what about a donation to the real poor and opressed as a result of your heinous policy towards supporting terrorism and predators, ultimately- victims of your blindness and cowardice.
Bush is hurting your financial profits, isn't he?
You DUMB.
Wickedly Funny.......2007-01-25
This book made me laugh so hard I was wiping tears of laughter from my eyes. I am no fan of Bill O'Reilly and it is only natural that I'd enjoy this caustic, cutting edge book challenging him. O'Reilly is Fox's major cash cow and he has certainly provided a dairy full for this book.
Other reviewers on the U.S. boards provided good analagies of this being like an assigned reading. You question the judgment of whoever assigned it; you joke about it, but deep inside you are hooked and want to finish it. The "what the heck" tone that underscores the latter part of the book will redirect readers' attention to the pressing question of what the heck was O'Reilly thinking during some of his "finer" moments.
You will also want to read Keith Olbermann's trenchantly funny, right on target, dodge no issue book, "The Worst Person in the World!"
The Title Says it all.......2007-01-16
First of all I love Bill O'Reilly, but I like reading books by people who hate him. The authors have no factual information to support them. They are just a punch of loonies. This is sick humor too. How many people, minus Ann Coulter, have hateful books about someone? Its just bad to even write a book like this and it makes the far left look even more immature. Read the book it you want to get mad, otherwise it makes a good fire starter.
Completely stupid..........2007-01-09
This is the dumbest book I have ever read. Most of it is made up with no factual evidence. I wouldn't read this book again and would not recommend it even to the biggest lefties out there. The only good use for it would be burning for warmth or maybe to level your kitchen table. I would have rated it a 0 but I don't think I am able to do that.

Book Description
Although the blockbuster is the most popular and commercially successful type of filmmaking, it has yet to be studied seriously from a formalist standpoint. This is in opposition to classical Hollywood cinema and International Art cinema, whose form has been analyzed and deconstructed in great detail. Directed By Steven Spielberg fills this gap by examining the distinctive form of the blockbuster. The book focuses on Spielberg's blockbusters, because he is the most consistent and successful director of this type of film - he defines the standard by which other Hollywood blockbusters are judged and compared. But how did Spielberg attain this position? Film critics and scholars generally agree that Spielberg's blockbusters have a unique look and use visual storytelling techniques to their utmost effectiveness. In this book, Warren Buckland examines Spielberg's distinct manipulation of film form, and his singular use of stylistic and narrative techniques. The book demonstrates the aesthetic options available to Spielberg, and particularly the choices he makes in structuring his blockbusters. Buckland emphasizes the director's activity in making a film (particularly such a powerful director as Spielberg), including: visualizing the scene on paper via storyboards; staging and blocking the scene; selecting camera placement and movement; determining the progression or flow of the film from shot to shot; and deciding how to narrate the story to the spectator.
Directed By Steven Spielberg combines film studies scholarship with the approach taken by many filmmaking manuals. The unique value of the book lies in its grounding of formal film analysis in filmmaking.
Customer Reviews:
Don't worry about the price, you'll be glad you bought it!.......2007-01-17
This book is absolutely wonderful...so much so, it deserves a kiss before I go to bed each night! Seriously, though, this book is well organized, chock-full of information, and can be digested at a rapid pace if you find yourself getting really into it (which is very likely to happen). As one can guess, it starts off with basic info about various vocal ranges. Then, it gets you started on the basics behind note-for-note harmonization for voice, utilizing primary triads only at first, then including secondary triads, diatonic sevenths, and chromatic chords as you desire. It features a chapter on writing material for introductions, endings and interludes, and a very useful chapter on smooth vocal modulations. It also builds up your vocal arranging toolbox by taking you from two-part to four-part arranging, including the various techniques (figuration, ostinato, imitation, vocal background) that you can use with each technique.
It covers a little bit of barbershop technique, and has an entire chapter on jazz vocal harmony, where it discusses the uses of upper extension tones, substitutions, and how to make the most of these. Throw in material dealing with other contemporary styles (pop, rock, country), a chapter on getting arrangements published, and chapters concerning the role of instrumental accompaniment - and you're looking at the holy grail of choral arranging. Whether you want to arrange hymns, showtunes, jazz or pop/rock, this book will be an invaluable aid! It's so well-explained, in fact, that you'll immediately be able to HEAR the logic and techniques behind vocal arrangements that once sounded complex.
Plus, each chapter gives you exercises at the end so you can immediately put theory to practice...and there's no additional workbook to buy - everything you need is included in TWO appendices in the back. One appendix has melodies only (usually of a simple folk/hymnal nature), which are to be used in the assignments. The other appendix has some complete vocal arrangements, to be used for analysis while reading certain chapters.
I hate to be long-winded here, but since this Amazon doesn't have the 'Search Inside' feature with this book, I figured potential buyers may want to know the bounty of information contained in this book before they drop $70-100 on it.
Don't spend half a year eyeballing this book like I did, buy it now!
The best choral arranging text available........1999-09-14
I have used this text in my university level arranging classes for several years and have found it to be an excellent text- virtually w/out peer in the subject it covers. Not only is the information useful and accurate but the style and writing is clear and to the point.
The exersizes are very valuable- they cover the full range of styles needed for the contemporary choral arranger. It is a pleasure to use and I recommend it most highly. In fact I was just beginning to write such a text when this one came out. I gave up immediately- this is the one that was needed.

Book Description
Sudoku is the new number puzzle craze sweeping the nation, and Sudoku X is the only puzzle collection to add diagonal play to the Sudoku formula.
Customer Reviews:
From the Board Games Editor at BellaOnline.com.......2005-12-06
When I first looked at these puzzles, I assumed they would be more difficult than regular sudoku, but they actually are not any tougher. The fact that you must generate numbers 1-9 on the diagonal as well as in rows, columns and boxes does add a fun twist, though. Sudoku purists may dislike these puzzles, particularly the smaller grids in the beginning of the book, but adventurous sudoku-ers will enjoy the twist.
The X Factor.......2005-11-29
Su Doku is a Japanese logic puzzle where rows, columns and regions must contain a certain number of digits only once. This collection of 100 puzzles adds an additional factor to the mix. Not only must the digits appear only once in each row, column and region, but also in the two long diagonals.
The book opens with a nice section on how to solve Su Doku puzzles. It then quickly moves into the puzzles themselves. First there are 6X6 puzzles (fifteen puzzles), then 8X8 (25 puzzles) and finally 9X9 (60 puzzles). After the puzzles there is a "stepping stones" hint section for each puzzle. Finally there are the solutions to the puzzles.
I do not find most Su Doku puzzles to be challenging but these were interesting. One has to remember to include the diagonals or you might think you are stuck. But keeping the diagonals in mind and the puzzles are not particularly hard although they are not as easy as many books. If you are a Su Doku fan you might want take a look at this one.
