Good but could be better.......2007-09-12
I think this book is ok, it is informative but i also think that there is a lot that is being left out. There is a lot of design terminology that i think should be included for this to be called a real Dictionary of design.

Book Description
From the bestselling author of Forever Fifty comes a new collection of poems that tickle, console, and offer the pleasure of instant recognition -- the perfect book for any woman anywhere in the vicinity of sixty.
Judith Viorst's "decade" books of verse -- including It's Hard to Be Hip Over Thirty, How Did I Get to Be Forty, and Forever Fifty -- have delighted millions of readers worldwide who relish her wit, warmth, and wisdom. Now here she is with Suddenly Sixty, a funny and touching book that speaks directly to the sixty-ish woman, inviting her to laugh about, sigh over, and come to hopeful terms with the complex issues of this decade of life.
Among the poems in this charmingly illustrated collection are those exploring the joys -- and strains -- of children and grandchildren, and the intimacy of old friends who've "known each other so long/We knew each other back when we were virgins." There are poems that tip their hat to mortality, wrestle with a husband's retirement -- "He's coming with me when I shop at the supermarket/So I won't have to shop alone. I like alone." -- and acknowledge the fact that at this stage of life we'd "give up a night of wild rapture with Denzel Washington for a nice report on my next bone density test." Offering plenty of laughs, a few tears, and cover-to-cover truths, these are poems for everyone who would "rather say never say die than enough is enough." Every woman who has reached this decade will -- rueful and smiling -- find herself in the pages of this book.

Customer Reviews:
suddenly sixty and other shocks of later life.......2007-03-24
it wasn't as humorous as some other books i have read on this subject
A Disappointment.......2006-11-30
I just ordered this book and am sorry I did. Where is the Judith Viorst of the 70's, when my children were young and loved her work? I expected this to be a light-hearted and original look at being "the age we are now," but instead, I found a woman sour -- especially with marriage -- and to a degree with life and grown children. I would not recommend it.
The best way to face sixty is to make fun of it, that is what Viorst does.......2006-10-07
I have not yet hit the landmark sixtieth birthday, but I am closing on it rather fast. It is clear to me that the best way to approach that fateful day is to laugh about it and one of the best ways to accomplish that is to read this book. In general, it pokes good clean fun at aging, although there is an occasional bitter tone when describing some of the more unpleasant aspects of life. Independent of your age, life is what we make of it and Viorst makes fun of what we all will hopefully face someday, the arrival of the sixtieth birthday. After all, the alternative really isn't a great deal of fun to contemplate
Scintillating Sixties.......2004-07-19
Judith Viorst deals with aging gracefully in her truth-giving poems about Suddenly Sixty and Other Shocks of Later Life. Being of a certain age in American society brings a certain angst tempered by the wisdom of experience-if we are lucky and thoughtful. Almost every poem elicits laughter as she ruminates on a variety of topics, including men's inability to ask for directions, the difficulty in apologizing, the family vacation, retirement, or the revenge for the woman dumped.
Judith Viorst has another winner!.......2003-08-26
She's done it again! Anyone 60+ will recognize herself in Judith's spectacular verses. To get the full flavor of these poems, you have to read them out loud with all the proper inflections. I never laughed so hard or cried so much over a book as I did with this one. She hits the nail on the head when she describes life after 60!!
Book Description
Each chapter of this book presents a single day of the twenty-day training which Ruth Zaporah developed into Action Theater, her investigation into the life-reflecting process of improvisation. This book shows through exercises, stories, anecdotes, and metaphors how to focus attention on the body's awareness of the present moment, moving away from preconceived ideas. Improvisations move through fear, boredom, laziness, and distraction to a sustained awareness of creative options.
Customer Reviews:
user friendly, thorough and intimate textbook.......2007-01-25
I knew I'd love this book at the description, but that may be bias as I love improvisation. At first scan I see that a college instructor of mine used the book front to back for a class of mine - and good choice, as I loved all the things we did in that class!
Taking an improv class can be a risky thing if you get a bad teacher. Ruth knows her practice in and out, and knows all the important stuff to cover - including dealing with emotinal issues. She also communicates the exercises very sweetly and clearly. As a teacher, it's nice to have mediations written out so you don't have to think on the spot and still come across calmly and clearly. So if you're taking a class or teaching a class or aren't sure yet if you want to do either - get this book, and you'll have an intimate understanding of the form and lots of fun!
An exploration into movement, improvisation, and creativity........1999-07-15
Unforgettable. This book is destined to become a classic. Ruth Zaporah is a master storyteller who doesn't so much "teach" improvisation as learn it with you. Based upon her experiences as a dancer and a dance teacher, her "Action Theater" system takes you through twenty stages of self-exploration that examine form, movement, and breath, among other things. As an artist, I appreciate Zaporah's ability to use her medium as a means of cutting through to the deeper levels of spiritual significance. This book is a must read for anyone who is interested in the creative process.
Book Description
"Along with John Ardoin's The Callas Legacy, this is the essential work about the most remarkable and disturbing singer to emerge after World War II." -- Opera News
Customer Reviews:
Forget the gossip - this is a serious book!.......2005-02-01
This book can seem rather controversial for some people, since it is highly critical (in the positively objective sense of the word) of Maria Callas, who has been deified by a number of her other biographers.
Maria Callas was a human being, which means that she had a private life as well as a career. For some people her private life seems very interesting and these readers will probably be somewhat disappointed with this book, since the biography of Callas the private person is only of second importance in Michael Scott's book.
But if you are interested in Callas the musician there is no other book that is more accurate, more peercing in its analysis - or simply, more interesting! When I first read the book I worshipped Callas uncritically. I was very offended several times because of Scott's judgement, for instance of her "Madama Butterfly": "Callas' reading of "Un bel dì" may be remarkable for the finish of her phrasing but not for the beauty of her singing...". But yet, this is so much more revealing and again, objective, than when John Ardoin writes in "The Callas Legacy" of the same role: "...Callas' voice seems a vessel which can be filled or drained to various levels of intensity at will".
So to me, this is the best book about Callas available - after all, what gives her importance is her abilities as a musician, NOT a tragedy queen!
An honest attempt to de-deify Callas.......2004-01-27
I remember the first time I read this book I became angry because I thought Scott was trying to make Callas less important than she had always been in my eyes. It is good to see something through another's eyes, particularly when they belong to a very incisive, observant writer. I have have gone back over the ensuing years and re-read chapters. Each time I find an item that makes me stop and think about my position on Callas. I still love Callas above any other singer, but I am much more honest in my admiration for her art. It wouldn't hurt some of her hysterical followers to examine the reasons behind their rabid worship of a person, who was after all, just human. Maria herself disliked being called "Divina" I am very offended by those who hurl epithets at anyone who dares not to worship at the altar of their godesses. To call a work this well researched and thought out "garbage" displays a small mind indeed.
Disrespectful, factually incorrect, and strangely biased..........2002-10-14
The one thing that Scott's biography of Callas has going for it is that he mostly sticks to Callas the artist, and avoids the gossip and speculation surrounding her personal life. However, what exists is a choppy, extremely opinionated, narrow minded repetition of all the same facts that are better found in other sources. He mentions that Callas "mistakes artfullness for artistry" about 100 times too. He basically feels that the deepening of her interpretation as her voice grew weaker was not real, and that her lyric and dramatic interpretation became more false as time went on. As the book plods on rehashing the same old information we have read over and over again elsewhere.
I own almost all the Callas biographies that have appeared in English, and I hated this book so much that I pulled out the photo section in the center to keep the pictures, and sent the book to the recycling center the day after I had the misfortune to purchase it.
Carefully researched study of Callas the musician.......2001-11-20
Michael Scott's book on the life and career of Maria Callas holds a strong appeal for the musician. Although he orders his study chronologically and includes quite a bit of biographical detail, this is not a book for gossip lovers. Instead, Scott dispassionately evaluates Callas' singing in general and major performances and roles in particular.
Scott's basic thesis is that Callas reached her vocal peak early, in the first part of the 1950s, and her great weight loss was in large part responsible for a general vocal decline thereafter, at first slow, then precipitous after her divorce from Meneghini.
At times his viewpoint provides a useful corrective to stories that have been handed down and repeated that are not exactly true--his take on the infamous Rome Norma of January 1958 is a striking example. His opinion that the root cause of many of the "scandals" that dogged her career was escalating vocal trouble certainly deserves serious consideration.
On the other hand, Scott is too quick to dismiss much of Callas' work from the later 1950s. By then, the early, prodigious vocal endowment had somewhat diminished, true; but for most opera lovers these years were the time when her still responsive voice was matched with her most exquisite musicianship.
Most readers will disagree, perhaps vehemently, with some of Scott's judgements and opinions; yet, by virtue of his firsthand witnessing of many of Callas' performances and determined avoidance of scandalmongering, his book joins a select company of work by Fitzgerald, Ardoin, Jellinek and a few others as one that sheds true light on the art of this much-discussed singer.
The Ultimate Callas Reading........2000-02-26
This is the best book on Callas currently available. And do you want to know why?
Because it concentrates on Callas the Musician.
Not Callas the supposedly famous workaholic. Of course she rehearsed all hours of the day and night, what was the alternative? The leering Meneghini? Did she sleep with him often? I bet she did! You can't stay at La Scala rehearsing all day. Mercifully not Santa Maria di Galatopulos either. Nor Callas the cheapskate who has been mugged by her friends with sawdust filled socks,[Stancioff and Robert Sutherland], Still less Little Maria the tiresome daughter, sister, cousin! wife.
Callas the musician, whose voice disintegrated while she was singing. Callas who sang for a short time in Europe and America for about a decade or so after the end of the war. Callas, who, while mouthing platitudes about being faithful to 'the composer' didn't hesitate to take the scissors to score after score. Callas who stopped singing to go on a cruise and didn't see the opera world speed up and got sadly stranded.
Scott clearly loves Callas, and is refreshingly clear sighted about her. He is not blind to her faults, vocal or otherwise, and it's time someone shot down the image of Walter Legge as Callas's recording Svengali. She'd have been better off staying at Cetra almost. There are some strange double standards in opera. For years people carped about Joan Sutherland's choice of her husband as her conductor, but no-one ever thinks to quibble about Rescigno's Charlie McArthur like contribution to Callas' art. Listen to Callas's recordings with Tonini and hear the difference.
There are a few inaccuracies in this book, more editorial than factual, but I can live with them.
It's good to see Callas discussed frankly, and without denigrating her artistic achievements Scott made me aware of how unnecessary Callas's tragedy actually was. Let's face it, she was almost an Upper Class Version Of Judy Garland. Almost.
I've always been able to take or leave Callas, and if it weren't for Scott, and Wisneski, Ardoin and Fitzgerald, and Ardoin's Callas Legacy, I would be increasingly leaving her. But I don't. I'm too fascinated by this woman, as we all are, lets face it, who managed to have a career in spite of herself.
This is the book on Callas that, more than any other, will stand the test of time, because as younger people discover her art for themselves, names like Walter Legge, Onassis, Rudolf Bing, Meneghini et al will be forgotten figures of the past. As Scott cleverly points out: We have her recordings and that's enough.

A remarkable woman and soprano.......2002-04-06
There has been many people writing the story of Maria Callas, but few pay tribute to her. This book written by her husband of 10 years covers 12 years of her life. It transcribes many of Maria's letters to him with her most personal feelings and some accounts of interaction with other singers, empresarios and conductors. It is interspersed with Mengehini's own recollections of events, both about their marriage life and dealings with opera theatre managers. It is factual, unbiased and filled with love. As you read it you realize how much Maria suffered and was exploited by La Scala and the Metropolitan. What is most important in this book is that it dispels all the unfounded rumors and stories created by the media just to sell newspapers. It explains and gives the reasons as to cancellations and withdrawals that the media vilified and attributed to her temperament, when in fact it was either for reasons of health or intransigence by the own theatre managers. This book is a true vindication of this superhuman singer. You will also learn about some of her key performances and trips around the world.
Surprisingly good.......2002-04-02
The pictures are famous, and rather painful: the glamorous, overly thin, overdressed Callas, giggling with Onassis on a yacht, while the paunchy, out-of-sorts Meneghini looks on. Meneghini in Callas biographies is usually the comic relief: the dorky, somewhat greedy businessman, clueless about everything, and finally, the world's most famous cuckolded husband, losing his wife to a billionaire. It's a sad story, and it must have caused Meneghini a lot of pain, for before he died he tried to 'set the record straight' with this biography.
Biographies like these are always bound to be rather biased affairs, with more self-justification than actual facts. But Meneghini's biography was actually very good. It gives a fascinating account of the ruthless, take-no-prisoners world of opera management. Meneghini has his own 'take' on the Callas/Tebaldi 'feud', suggesting that it was a cynical ploy invented to sell more records, with both divas playing along. The traditional view is that Callas goaded Tebaldi, but in Meneghini's eyes Tebaldi gave as good as she got. It's a rather detailed account of the hectic 50s, and Callas's temperamental personality is well-defined. Whether it's all 'true' is not known, but it's the way Meneghini saw it, and it has some value.
The book is often quite funny. I love his take on Callas's family: he said he could never figure it out, as he was a mama's boy! There are some letters from Callas in the early years which suggest a happy, if not exactly passionate marriage.
The book breaks off rather abruptly in 1959, when Callas left Meneghini and ran off with Onassis. The last chapter is still seething with bitterness, which belies the traditional take that Meneghini was simply a greedy businessman who cared nothing for Callas.
In recent years the biographers have been kinder about Meneghini. Many of Callas's friends, like Giulietta Simionato, have admitted that whatever his faults, he adored her and tried his best to make her happy. I always felt that in Callas's life, the saddest chapter was meneghini. True Callas died lonely and unhappy, but her fans still loved her, her records still sold, and she will always be remembered. Meneghini got nothing for his pains except heartache and ridicule. This is why 'his side' of the story still has value.
Good, albeit biased, source of information,.......2002-02-18
I like this book - it's easy to read and it's quite unpretentious. It is amazing how poor Battista claimed that he was the only person who knew his wife the best. I am wondering whether he recalled about her leaving him and him being completely caught by surprise when she had done that - did he really believe that he knew her so well? The book is full of such passages that inspire such questions. I think that his reputation of being a money monger and being ruinous to her career are somewhat justified, but I also trust now that without his help we would not have La Callas. All in all, the book is a valuable source for those who are trying to understand Callas as a person and an artist. I also feel that Meneghini truly worshipped his wife, and he can be forgiven for many things because of that. I just think that if he wasn't so much on the money and if his attitude wasn't so mercenary, perhaps he would have influenced her to be less money conscious and she would have been in a better position to take Onassis for what he truly was (that is, a cynical money making machine who couldn't careless for her art and her needs as an artist) maybe her life would be happier. Her life story is incredible and I can't stop thinking of why there isn't a movie about her since she remains the greatest opera artist of at least the times of sound recoding and she had achieved the status of a legend.

slot expert's guide to playing slots.......2007-05-14
I have 3 books and they are all good.
Nothing of use.......2007-02-16
Don't waste your time reading this. You'd do better putting the money you would have spent on this book into the slot machine. It has no new information about slots and slot playing that you couldn't find online.
Better Off Saving Your Money.......2006-03-02
I came across this book at a yardsale... figures, huh? And that's where these books of this type belong. There are no secrets to winning jackpots on slot machines. If there were, all these so-called "experts" would be spending all their free time earning big bucks there instead of ripping off wannabe-winners by writing these books of fables. I've been playing the slots for 3 years now and have learned a few things not even mentioned in these books. I hold to the belief that every machine has it's own "pattern" that you must learn in order to win. By "pattern", I mean the combinations you play to win. For example, on a triple diamond machine where the max is 50 cents and only 3 wheels, I have found this pattern to work many times: play one bet, then 2 (max), then 1, then 2 (max) for awhile, then hit max several times. I have won many times with this strategy. On a machine called "Butterfly" which has 3 wheels and the max is 75 cents, I have used the following pattern many times to win: hit one bet, then 2 bet, then 3 bet. Repeat a few times, then hit max several times. It's all about figuring out that particular machine's "pattern". I am being totally honest when I say the most I win at any given machine is usually $300. But what I've put into machines before I win finally, I would say about $50. Want more advice?..... Stay away from those progressive machines- only about 1 in 100 will ever win anything, and if they do it is small amounts. Progressive machines were designed to get you excited and worked up into believeing that the amount you see flashing above the machines could actually be yours. I have never had luck with a progressive machine. Another one to avoid are the machines that give you a free 4th wheel that spins when you hit a certain combination. I've tried many strategies on those and have never come away with anything worth my time. So next time you go to a casino, play a little game with the machine of your choice- develope a playing pattern and see if you come away with anything. Some more interesting facts: It DOES NOT matter if you choose to hit the buttons instead of pulling the lever. I stopped pulling the lever a very long time ago and just hit the buttons now and I still continue to win, so it's just a false belief that pulling the lever gives you better odds. During your time on a machine, try removing your playing card then re-inserting it. Or "cash out" then play again right afterwards. These tips do work on some machines. It isn't so much that you are trying to trick the machine into thinking another player has come along, it is more about starting fresh with a new pattern, I think anyway. So, try these tips, free of charge, and let's see how you do. Good Luck!
Not worth the money.......2005-12-31
I bought this book because I needed a couple more dollars to get the free shipping on an item. I'm an avid slot player and thought I might get some useful information (and save a couple of dollars on shipping in the process). You can get most of the informtion in the book from reading the pay table on the slot machines. What you can't get there can be found by searching the internet for slot strategies. This book is all about stretching your bankroll. Common sense should tell you if you want your money to last longer, don't play max bet. Another way to make your money last longer would be to avoid buying this book.
Outstanding.......2005-12-28
Of all the books I've read on slot machines, this book is by
far the best. It's easy to read and has no math, history of
slots, or other filler with little or no value. It just tells
you in plain language what you need to know about today's high-
tech computerized slots--how they work, how to play them. If you're a serious slot player, this book is definitely worth
buying.
