Book Description

TASCHEN`s Book of Tiki provided the blueprint for the re-appreciation and revival of Tiki style. Almost completely wiped from the consciousness of Americans until recently, Sven Kirsten's tome put Tiki on the map as a unique pop culture phenomenon. Never before had Tiki culture's visual power and pervasiveness been revealed with such detail and insight. Not only did the book inspire the erecting of many new Tiki bars from New York to London to Berlin to Prague to Waikiki, but also motivated a myriad of Tiki artisans to pick up the chisel and carry on the forgotten tradition, while spurring many others to create their own home hideaways, making "Tiki" a household name again.

This new follow-up book, which brings together the two recent retro trends of mid-century modernism and Tiki style, is bound to lift the Tiki craze to a new level. With his usual mixture of ironic detachment and genuine enthusiasm for the subject, Kirsten shows us how primitivism and modernism were two sides of the same coin in the 1950s and 60s. Decor deities and ersatz ancestors outrageously merged in the modern brutalist furniture from the house of Witco, a company that outfitted Elvis Presley's Jungle Room and Hugh Hefner's Chicago Playboy pool. This was design porn at its best. cover: © Estate of Stanley Stubenberg

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful, intoxicating sensory overload.......2007-10-03

I've read many, many art books. Seldom have I had one that gave me such a delirious buzz as Tiki Modern. It's like walking into some cool but forgotten museum until your mind feels like it's going to explode from too much input. I just got it, today, and I can only look at it for short bits. It's so powerful.

Although I'm not a baby boomer and I do have more than my share of irony, I genuinely love this stuff. The tiki art craze was exciting and gutsy. It was totally unafraid to take a concept and run naked through the streets with it. The fact that it still offends the delicate artistic palates and political sensibilities of others only proves its validity. Besides that, tiki was damn fun.

I never thought anyone could pull off a book that was better than the original "Book of Tiki", but Sven has done it. It's a tiki feast for the eyes and the soul.

5 out of 5 stars Light your tiki torch again.......2007-09-29

The tiki revival of today is filled with quaintness, much like the recent short-lived resuscitations of Googie architecture, swing music, cocktail culture, cigar-smoking and other "square" artifacts from the Mid-Century American attic. I can't imagine anyone in Southern California propping a tiki god in the back yard without a heavy dose of smirking irony. But Baby Boomers will surely remember when Polynesiana was a genuine enthusiasm and the excitement of our parents as they departed for an "exotic" evening at some lavish mocked-up South Seas restaurant. Author Sven Kirsten has done another magnificient job as an "urban archeologist" in unearthing this quirky bulldozed chapter in American pop culture, following up his influential The Book Of Tiki which was published in 2000. Tiki Modern covers some of the same ground, but concentrates on the social and artistic movements that gave rise to the tiki craze (and ultimately brought about its demise). It's another lavish, thick book from Taschen, with every page loaded with great graphics and seemingly lost tiki ephemera. The book is divided into two parts, The Evolution Of Tiki Modern and Witco: Tiki Modern Exemplified. Witco was the leading manufacturer of tiki decor. Horrendously ugly to anyone with traditional taste, Witco wall art and furniture was produced with chain saws and shipped across the country to modern crudes. Witco decorated tiki bars, restaurants, apartments, motels and the famous homes of Elvis and Hugh Hefner among countless other swinging bachelors and wild chicks. The book's final chapter ponders tiki's future, which probably will be limited to eBay auctions, thrift stores, and few retro-minded artists catering to hipsters. As a genuine phenomenon, tiki will always belong to its long-departed day.

This book is a collection of Tiki art from a sunny tropical art exhibit to smashingly hit foggy San Francisco. An amazing turn out was observed that night, where the crowds were spilling into the streets, and there was a line of people waiting for people to exit before they could be let in. There is a variety of levels of art in this book, where all aspire to share their love for the Tiki God. There are no Johnny come latelys to join the love of tropical drinks, tropical breezes and a Tiki God to admire. This is a good book to complete your collection of Tiki books.

5 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2004-12-17

Otto is no johnny-come-lately trying to profit off the Tiki craze--he sparked the Tiki revival 10 years ago, when he started "Tiki News." Many of us first learned that others were also into Tiki from that publication, which also introduced us to the Tiki work of Shag and others.

This is a great survey of newer Tiki art and is highly recommended.

1 out of 5 stars A little better than a magazine.......2004-12-08

This is a small book. I expected more and have to say I was very dissapointed. While there is some good art from some good artists in this book, there is alot of amateur tiki art that is not worthy and you have to wonder why it is even in the book. What is the criteria for the tiki art in this book? There seems to be none, and frankly this book seems like a weak attempt to profit off the latest tiki craze. I do not recommend it to anyone. Compared to the other tiki books in my collection, this book leaves you very flat.

4 out of 5 stars Come on and enter blue collar aerospace worker cheese paradise.......2006-08-02

I've been looking for books on the Tiki Craze of the 50's and 60's. This book is a pocket version I'm told of a bigger book which I plan on getting. This book is awesome and for lack of a better term kitschy. I hate that word so much but its the only way to describe it. It is also a beautiful work of art that belongs in any greaser or cool hep lounge lizard's bachelor pad. The book is very informative documenting the beginnings of the Tikis when the polynesians worshiped them as gods of good luck and fertility and how the boys of WW2 brought back with them from the tour of the pacific, the tiki.
There is awesome photographs of old Tiki restaurants and bars like Trader Vic's and Beachcomber Don. There is also pictures of some of the cool tropical elixirs that sent many a grey flannel man wifting along on trade winds to the warm gold beaches, the emerald seas and the topless native women. It also chronicles Tiki theme parks, hotels and cool swinging apartments for the bachelor minature jungles of love. There is some very embarrasingly funny politically incorrect attitudes towards the actual polynesian culture that created the Tiki movement in America.
It seems here in America when ever anything is past a year old its considered garbage and thrown out. To me thats a disgusting attitude and it needs to change. We need to learn from the past. Pretty much we live in a era of conformity and BS like the 50's. It seems we need to loosen our belts again. The Tiki back yard party was a way of shedding the inhibitions both sexually and mentally placed on that generation by their prodecessors. Rockabilly and Rock n' Roll helped the teenager in the 50's shed inhibitions, so the Tiki party did that for the adult. It was a chance to be somebody else and be a kid again. We sorely need that in this day and age. This book is a great read and I plan on buying the bible version of it.

5 out of 5 stars A family-friendly intro book to Tiki.......2005-10-01

In much defense of "Tiki Style", this book is really about making a conservative friendly, nudity free version of the Book Of Tiki so it could be sold in retail locations like Old Navy. It has most of the same lovely photos sans bare breast and wooden phalluses.

The book itself is slightly larger than a pocket size book. Its inexpensive, which make it a great gift and/or introductory book to show others without fear of damage to one's copy of the Book of Tiki. Guilt free.

This book is more of a tool for those already beholding of tiki and a photographic intro for those just starting to learn the imagery of this era of Americana pop culture.

1 out of 5 stars Simply an edited version of Sven's 'Book of Tiki'.......2005-09-10

I was looking forward to reading this book as I throughly enjoyed Kirsten's 'Book of Tiki' and the synopsis of this book led me to believe it was a new work by Sven Kirsten. I was quite dismayed to find that 'Tiki Style' simply appears to take 18 of the 23 chapters in Kirsten's 'Book of Tiki' , cut out a good portion of the chapters' accompanying photos along with their captions, and reprint them under a new title. I could not find a single image or line of text in this book that hasn't been directly copied over from 'Book of Tiki' (even the chapter titles remain the same). This book's only saving grace is the price makes it an affordable alternative for anyone who can't get their hands on a copy of 'Book of Tiki'. However, if you already own 'Book of Tiki' you'd be wise to stay away from this one.

            Book Description

New York has appeared in more movies than Michael Caine, and as a result of overfamiliarity, the City poses a problem for critics and casual moviegoers alike. Audiences mistake the New York image of skyscrapers and glitter for the real thing, but in fact the City is a network of small villages, each with its unique personality. Street Smart offers a novel approach to understanding the cultural influences of New York's neighborhoods on the work of four quintessentially New York filmmakers: Sidney Lumet, Woody Allen, Martin Scorsese, and Spike Lee. The city's diverse economic and ethnic enclaves, where people live, work, shop, worship, bank, and go to school, often have little relationship to the concept of New York City created by the movies. Their New York, however, is as real as the smell of fried onions in the stairwell of an apartment building, and it is this New York, not the movie New York, that has left its impression on their films. Lumet, Allen, Scorsese, and Lee's imaginations have been shaped by their neighborhoods, not the New York of the movies. In turn, these directors have used their own life experiences to shape their films. Richard A. Blake examines their home villages—from Flatbush and Fort Green in Brooklyn to the Lower East Side of Manhattan—to enrich our critical understanding of the films of four of America's most accomplished contemporary filmmakers.

Composer Ned Rorem has an exquisite way with a song, distilling musical essences to provide miniature masterpieces that linger in listeners' minds. He is also, as these diaries prove, a facile, if somewhat undisciplined, writer. And someone mired in self-absorption. At the time Rorem wrote his diaries, he was distinctly callow and obsessed with being "pretty"; yet the picture that emerges of him in his youth is not entirely attractive. The book will be of interest to those who are curious about the lives of significant composers, both for the small insights that he shares about his composition process and for the details of his life and the circumstances under which he wrote his music. His vividly sketched picture of gay life more than a generation ago widens the audience of this book. --Sarah Bryan Miller

I came about Rorem 'round about-ly -through videos of interviews and liner note snippets - and was greatly intrigued by his blatantly keen mind. While learning the music, I put the 'word' into it all and it plunged me even deeper. Between his impish candor and spotless observation one experiences a fine chunk of a true artistic pursuit. Also, his reflections on the two worlds of Paris and New York and the creative flora and fauna therein are priceless.

                  5 out of 5 stars Awesome book!.......2005-02-22

This is a great book. I bought it because I had been interested in making knives for quite a while. It goes over how to plan them out, how to temper and harden them, and the overall process. The tools to make them can be expensive and big, but if you're really into knifemaking then this book is for you.

4 out of 5 stars The book to start with for hobby knifemakers.......2003-06-20

If you want to be Bob Loveless, this isn't your book. If you want to make a decent knife but have no idea where to start, this is your book. If you want to make a few knives and use your hands for every step, start with McCreight's book. If you have already made a few knives and konw what you like, you might find useful information here, but it might not be the one to start with.

I started here. I now own almost all of the knifemaking books on the market and all of them have useful information. This is still the one I go to for inspiration when I want variety. The 10 different projects are presented from the viewpoint of a jeweler who wants to make a few knives with many techniques adapted from silversmithing, rather than the more usual machinist-knifemaker books that start by telling you to get a milling machine and a belt grinder. For beginners and people who want to use their hands, this book is very good.

The knives are a little rough (your first few will be rough, no matter what book you use, so don't worry about that), but functional. The hollow-handle survival knife is probably the one that needs the most revision. I just don't trust the soldered attachment of tang to handle.

In all, I suggest this book to more people than any other. After this one, I would send folks to David Boye's book, then to Blackie Collins' (yes, I know it is out of print, but look for it). The Loveless book is the fourth on my personal list. It required a machine shop to make a knife like Bob Loveless and that is just out of the scope of a beginner. McCreight on the other hand, has a book that is specifically for beginners. Start here.

3 out of 5 stars A decent beginners project workbook........1999-02-10

As books for the beginning knifemaker go "10 projects" is an excelent place to start. Tim McCreight has done a good job of selecting a variety of interesting projects of different skill levels for the novice. Each project is designed to bring a new aspect of knife making to light, and in doing so present a very rounded beginning. I have only two problems which I think the book fails to address. First, the depth of information concerning cutlery and its production could fill several volumes. I believe that Mr. McCreight would have been better served to concentrate on the stock removal method first, so that the finishing and grinding aspects of knife production could be understood in full. Then proceed to the forge and show the transition therefore giving a distinct break and an opportunity for the student to explore the skills involved. The second difficulty I have with this work is that some of the instuctions are difficult to follow and require alot of practice to pull off successfully. Other than that is is a well written and comprehensive work. and although not my first choice for a beginner it is a valuable tool for projects and tecniques.
