Book Description
foreword by Adam Weinberg
essay by Leroy Searle
Taking up where Notations in Passing left off, Riding 1st Class on the Titanic encompasses Nathan Lyons's work from 1974 to the present. Like the earlier book, this one consists primarily of a series of paired images, beautifully sequenced by the photographer, with very little text. Found language, such as that on building facades and signs, plays a prominent role in many of the sequences.
The book, which accompanies a traveling exhibition organized by the Addison Gallery of American Art, contains a foreword by Adam Weinberg, Director of the Addison Gallery, and an essay by Leroy Searle.
The title refers to the paradox of the Titanic, a symbol of invulnerability that became the carrier of our ultimate vulnerability. Lyons's work investigates the value systems that we have embraced, only to discover that their elusive meanings do more to challenge our belief systems than to reinforce them.

Book Description
The streets of New York are full of characters-eccentrics, tourists, and residents-who don't care who's around to hear them. This collection offers some of the most bizarre, hysterical, and mysterious conversations overheard on the sidewalk, in the subway, or from the next table.
The website overheardinnewyork.com has been featured in many publications, including The New York Times, Time Out New York, the Chicago Sun-Times, the San Francisco Examiner, and the New York Post. Now site creators S. Morgan Friedman and Michael Malice have compiled the greatest moments caught in passing, to create a hilarious panorama of the unique people who populate the city. The book features an introduction by Marc Shaiman, the Tony and Grammy award-winning composer of Hairspray, as well as a foreword by bestselling author Lawrence Block.

pop culture meets the streets.......2007-07-26
Overheard in New York provides an eclectic view into the thoughts, fears, and fantasies of everyday people of our pop culture. Similar to the Post Secret series created by Frank Warren, Friedman has creatively provided a voyeuristic atmosphere for the reader to enjoy.
Check out the website........2007-01-23
This book seems to be the best from the website, which is already funny and entertaining. About two months after reading it, I can still recall the best parts. Be sure to not only read the headline and the quote, but also the location where it was overheard, as that can make it even funnier.
Looking forward to new Overheards!.......2006-06-22
I'm a huge fan of this book and site as well as the sister-sites Overheard in the Office and Overheard at College. They're all laugh out loud funny! I heard just recently that they've signed on to do an Overheard in the Office book and can't wait to get my hands on it!!
Depressed People with Poor Vocabularies.......2006-06-10
If I had never been to NY, I would never want to go after reading most of this book. I read on for too long, hoping for a change of tone which never came.
The quoted conversations were the words of people you would not want to meet. They were shallow, uninformed, mean, and long on the repeated use of common scatological and sexual terminology.
I have been to the city many times and overheard thousands of more interesting and print-worth conversations.
I always keep or give away books. This book went into the garbage!
Know what you are getting.......2006-04-04
I can't believe no one has given out the website address yet. If you haven't read the inspiration for the book, it's at www.overheardinnewyork.com. And if you have read that website, then I am surprised you haven't bought the book yet. It's just what you would expect from one of the funniest sites online, and having it in book form will change your life. Or, at least, the days when you read it because you will be hard pressed not to laugh!
Book Description
An encyclopedic look at several dozen of the most well known "people" of literature, television, mythology, and film.
From detectives and criminals (Dick Tracy, Perry Mason, and Norman Bates) to the greats of theater (Hamlet, Shylock, Romeo, and Juliet), the book covers and uncovers the history and influences of major characters of fiction.
The three writers use a variety of styles and approaches, (one essay is told from a canine's point of view), and the tone ranges from scholarly to open comedy.
Customer Reviews:
A great concept-- but not particularly well done.......2007-05-19
I read a review of this book in a magazine, and I was intrigued by the concept: Michael Hart's "The 100: A Ranking of the Most Influential Persons in History" deals with actual people; wouldn't it be possible and useful to do the same with fictional characters? Yes, it would, but, unfortunately, the authors don't execute the concept very well.
The problem for me isn't the rankings. After, all, they're admittedly subjective, and in the end, they don't matter that much any way. The thing that I found jarring at first-- and then grating as I read on-- was the uneven quality of the essays. I suspect that this was in part due to the simple fact that there are three co-authors. It would be very difficult to coordinate the styles and lengths of the essays.
More seriously, though, they clearly didn't attempt to coordinate the point of the essays. That is, some of them are straight biographies. Some are pop-cultural analyses of the significance of the characters. Some are political screeds. Some are failed attempts to be cutsie, best illustrated by the essay supposedly written by an author's dog. Many of the essays read as though they were responses to homework assignments that were written at the last second by a student hoping that his teacher will mistake generalities and clever wordplay for content.
Now, this isn't to say that I hated the book; in fact, I actually liked it. It's just that it disappointed me. With a little more authorial discipline-- or maybe stronger editorial control-- it could have been a GREAT book.
So, in summary, I think it's worth reading, and it's entertaining, but I believe it could have been so much better.
Okay Bathroom book........2007-03-21
My sister bought me this book and I was really excited to read it because my friends and I would sit around and discuss topics such as this. It appears that a group of people took advantage of an idea most of us have had and did not deliver anything more than essays that remind me of papers I wrote 3 hours before they were due. Sometimes I never understood why they thought the character was influential, sometimes their influence seemed extremely exaggerated and sometimes I was not sure whether they undertsood influence. The only reason I gave the book 2 stars is because it reignited my desire to have discussions a=on topics such as this.
Don't Get It..........2007-02-16
A list that includes such potentially fleeting charactors as Buffy The Vampire Slayer as high as #44 and the demotion of a universally recognised near 70 year old charactor such as Superman to #64 is highly doubtful in its seriousness or its intention.
I don't believe they would write the same list even 12 months from now.
A bathroom is where this book belongs........2007-02-05
I found the book title to be very fascinating and looked forward to reading about people who have shaped our society and ourselves. What I found was self-indulgent humor that was not particularly funny and in fact often times trite. Were the authors drunk when they wrote this?! It's full of side bars and I guess what they consider jokes; though none were funny. The #24 person they listed was Odysseus who they claim tried to avoid the Trojan War by pretending to be insane; that plan having failed, he tried to join the Air National Guard in Texas. The book eventually wound up being a politial satire to slam our government I guess.
Then the authors suggest having a St. Lupercalia'a Day in which we have a day to celebrate orgies to keep the clergy happy. What?! Are you kidding me? This book is completely inappropriate. It would have been a wonderful book if the authors could have kept from drinking while writing it.
Could have been better.......2007-01-09
I had read an article that excerpted some of the essays in this book and loved the concept. It's fascinating that 101 of the most influential people who have shaped our society were not even real people. However, this book was a bit of a disappointment. After reading through 2 or 3 articles, I just skimmed the rest. To be honest, the title was much more compelling than the essays were.
Book Description
How Movies Work, offers the filmgoer an engaging and informative guide to the appreciation and evaluation of films. It provides a comprehensive consideration of movies from idea to script, casting, financing, shooting and distribution. Bruce Kawin addresses the book not just to students of film but to any filmgoer curious to know more about the process of the conception and creation of our favorite entertainment and art form.
Customer Reviews:
Effective but Incomplete!.......2006-08-15
How Movies Work is an excellent introduction to the process and techniques of filmmaking. For any aspiring filmmaker or movie buff, it will introduce all of the intricacies from pre-production to post-production. Usually, the author's style is clear and comprehensible for the layman; however, there are moments when the text is burdened by the minutiae of the trade: trying to comprehend the definitions of film developing and editing practices is nearly impossible. Nevertheless, these moments are few and far between, and any dutiful reader will leave the book with a valuable wealth of knowledge regarding filmmaking.
What is disappointing, however, is that the book deliberately sidelines even a cursory overview of what the author terms "film theory." Admittedly, Kawin does not disguise the fact that he presents a bare-bones overview of the specific, concrete details regarding filmmaking, but a few pages on the psychological and abstract components of film theory would surely have supplemented the book nicely. Kawin argues that the most in depth analysis of film construction cannot be accomplished without a thorough knowledge of the production process, which is certainly true. While his book elaborately details the production process, it may not satisfy those who are interested in the theoretical constructs that deconstruct cinema.
As a final note, the illustrations are almost always beneficial. The text is, however, considerably dated. Films before 1986 are not included. The text discusses nothing about digital photography and very little about computer-generated imagery. Personally, however, in the age of DVD extra features, there is already a superfluity of this information easily located in the world of cinema, and the text does not suffer considerably from its absence.
You Must Buy This Book.......2001-04-21
You must buy this book if you want to find out how movies work, i.e., how they enrich our cultural experience and how they are made. Kawin's textbook is pleasantly readable by anyone interested in the cinema. It contains a wealth of information from film appreciation to film production (including explanations of various special effects!) to film studies. Every aspect of the cinema is clearly explained and illustrated with examples, and the book contains many still photographs, 96 of which are in color.
I think this is exactly how a "how-to" book should be written. I only wish it had been updated to reflect advances in the 1990s -- this book was first published in 1987 and reprinted in 1992.
A fine text for not only school, but also for reference........1999-03-30
Kawin is by far one of the brightest minds in film literature and theory today. His text brings the background of film to light and stresses the importance of all aspects of the cinema. This text is an excellent resource for any student of the cinema.
Standard work about making and "reading" movies.......1997-06-28
The title says it all: not only does this book tell you what a movie
technically is made of (differences between film stocks, sound recording
techniques, etc), it also tells you how the movie is shot (lighting, lenses,
special effects, etc) but finally it also tells the deeper meaning of
certain shots or sequences. Especially that last part is very interesting:
with examples from Citizen Kane, Close Encounters Of The Third Kind and many
others, the author explains how the composition of the picture, movements
and sound can communicate concepts like mood, emotion and relationships.

Ensemble Life.......2000-01-20
An intimate portrait of one of the finest string quartets of the century by a woman who has had an interesting life of her own. Muriel Nissel is the wife of Siegmund Nissel, the quartet's second violinist, and as such has been in a strategic position to observe the ups and downs of a deeply rewarding, often difficult way of life that every string player envies but that many would find daunting. A good read, especially for anyone who is involved in chamber music or who has fallen under its spell.

Simon and Schuster Super Crossword Books.......2005-09-03
This series of crossword books by Simon and Schuster are great for the crossword lover who is bored by the "too easy" crosswords in the books available at most newstands. The puzzles are challenging but mostly do-able. If you're looking for something that stretches your brain a little, but isn't downright impossible, try any of the books in this series.
