Book Description

To draw is to understand what we see. In The Undressed Art, writer-naturalist Peter Steinhart investigates the rituals, struggles, and joys of drawing. Reflecting on what is known about the brain’s role in the drawing process, Steinhart explores the visual learning curve: how children begin to draw, how most of them stop, and what brings adults back to this deeply human art form later in life.  He considers why the face and figure are such commanding subjects and describes the delicate collaboration of the artist and model. Here is a powerful reminder that no revolution in art or technology can undermine our vital need to draw.

5 out of 5 stars Interesting and Inspiring.......2007-05-28

I bought this book at first glance as I do many books on art I find on my too-frequent trips to the bookstore. I'll read nearly anything that seems interesting, and I am particularly interested in both the act of art and drawing, and why we (as humans) cannot seem to stop ourselves from making art of all kinds.
That said, this book is really a tale of why and how artists draw the human form. Its challenges, its intrigues, and its joy. It is a historical description of drawing as an art form, and also an inspiration to grab pencils and paper and sketch everything! I would recommend this book to artists, art lovers and readers alike!

4 out of 5 stars Interesting Read.......2007-03-31

This book was recommended to me by an art professor at the university. As an artist's model I found it interesting. I mainly enjoyed the stories about artists and models and drawing groups and the historical aspects as well. I found the other parts less interesting but still worth reading.

5 out of 5 stars Very insightful.......2006-09-27

A very good read. Light enough to not overwhelm, but deep enough to stir some introspection. I'm just starting figure drawing, so it gave me some idea of what to expect. Enjoyed the view from the models side of the canvas.
I also enjoyed Mr. Steinhart's views on "why" we feel compelled to draw and paint.

5 out of 5 stars The Undressed Art addresses a lot about why we draw.......2006-02-25

This book brings together a lot of ideas from many different sources, both past and contemporary, into a wonderfully crafted text. It is informative and a great read at the same time. I don't agree with everything that Steinhart postulates, but he's not strident in his opinions which leaves one with the feeling that there's still plenty of room for discussion. Anyone who loves to draw the human figure should read this book several times.

5 out of 5 stars Unexpected Surprise.......2006-02-24

Out the outset of this book I was unsure of its purpose. Initially filled with too many references to others' writings, theories, and pontifications, I struggled with wanting to continue. But while sitting on a plane and having moved through the opening chapters, I reached a point of no return and unable to put it down. Upon completion and further reflection, I came to reallize that the book is not unlike a drawing - initially the artist (author) is finding his way, refining his line and contour, and in the end providing the form to give it shape, tone, appeal and emotion. One clearly gets the sense that regardless of the creative outlet, the mind processes in the same way - it is who one is more than about what they do or rather, what they do is who they are.

This book validates why some of us love to draw - simply for ourselves and hopefully the results may be enjoyed by others. Filled with a lots of anecdotal information on a variety of subjects that relate to the desire to create, I made the mistake of not underlining and making notes in the margins - so I get to read it again.

        Book Description

The Subjects of Art History provides an introduction to the historiography and theory of the history of art. Examining a variety of theoretical approaches, the editors and contributors to this volume provide interpretations of the history and contemporary relevance of such important methodologies as semiotics, phenomenology, feminism, gay and lesbian studies, museology, and computer applications, among other topics. Each essay, specially commissioned for this volume, gives a fresh perspective on the topic by demonstrating how a particular approach can be applied to the understanding and interpretation of specific works of art. This volume will be a timely contribution to the current debate on the theory and practice of art history.

5 out of 5 stars Timeless scenes enchant the eye........2001-04-04

Art books do not always make for easy browsing. They can be too much of a good thing; the size and weight of a large volume can put me off.

Woodstock Landscapes is user-friendly. Here are about sixty images in a nice softbound book--neither huge nor unwieldy. Some of John Kleinhans' deft landscapes are silver prints, but the majority are fine color reproductions of his darkroom work. Novelist Gail Godwin invites us in with a graceful introduction.

Something quite fascinating happens when I begin flipping through these scenes. My pace lessens. A quiet descends as I slow down to look at a timeless world.

Kleinhans' fine compositional eye unerringly invites us into scene after scene. It's the familiar world created anew, with images of soft morning light, winter cornfields, venerable old farmhouses, meandering streams, and village lights glowing after a spring shower. Since I also live in Woodstock, I know many of these places quite well, but that's not a requirement for enjoying the collection.

Though the setting is in and around a famous small town in upstate New York, I've given copies to delighted friends who are city-bound, to friends who know well the rural life, and to friends who live in other countries who will probably never know what it's like to sit near a pond on a hot summer day and watch dragonflies thread the air while frogs thrum at the water's edge.

        5 out of 5 stars Home.......2001-01-30

This is a most beautiful book. After living in Woodstock for 53 years I am now living in another state. I so often find myself home sick and yearning for the spirit and beauty of the surroundings I lived in for so long. When this happens I take out John's book and feel myself returning home. In each photograph he has captured the beauty, color, and magic of the area. I am very grateful to have received this gift. Thank you

3 out of 5 stars Funny John Stewart.......2007-09-07

I like the Jon Stewart show immensely and this book is a good primer on the humor of our "democracy inaction". I'm giving this book and Lloyd Dangle's newly released book "Troubletown Told You So: Comics That Could've Saved Us From This Mess" to all my relatives this year. And frankly both these books should be taught in college government classes! Troubletown Told You So: Comics that Could've Saved Us from this Mess

          4 out of 5 stars Too funny..........2007-09-05

What can you say? Is it the old school book library feel? Is it the constant sarcasm?

          The book is simply funny.

Warning -- Very much like Denis Miller, Stewart's brand of humor is somewhat intellectual in nature. If you are looking for slapstick, you a) don't watch Stewart and b) are definitely buying the wrong book.

          5 out of 5 stars if you like J.S, you'll like this.......2007-07-03

English is my second language and I thought I would have some problem to understand the jokes but they were clear.
Good book eve if you don't agree with everything.

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious look at politics by Jon Stewart.......2007-06-10

I love "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart", it's really the best comedy on TV. Therefore I bought this book. This is a mischievious deadpan comedy book, which traces not only the history of America, but of democracy and humanity. The book is written in a standard text book style which took me back to university. It was just fun reading this book.

Im my opinion if you love "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart" and how the host takes on politics, you really have to buy this book.

Furthermore, I recommend The Daily Show with Jon Stewart - Indecision 2004 and Naked Pictures of Famous People.

          3 out of 5 stars A bit juvenile...........2007-05-14

It's a bit juvenile but that's a kind of what I'd expected from John Stewart. I know he's got better stuff in his head than this. If you're looking for good political books I'd suggest Bill Maher's books though. Keep this for your backup on those long drives though. :-)

          1 out of 5 stars Anti Christian?.......2007-09-16

Jon Stewart is a brilliant comedian and it shows through in this book. There are a number of valid points and laugh out loud moments but those are tempered by outright offensive annotations. This book will be particularly offensive to Christians as its authors obviously had an agenda to defame Christianity. Overall I found this book to be very pretentious, offensive and an affront to my religion. This blasphemous piece is not a good example of progressive writing and it is a shame because Jon Stewart is otherwise a genius at creating amusing satire. It is not all Jon's fault though, this book was written at the height of the Bush administration's "line in the sand" domestic policy and many liberals were caught up in taking the opposite view to Bush and his cronies as a self defense mechanism.

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious and informative!!!.......2007-08-04

I was laughing out loud alone in my house while reading this. I also learned stuff. I think the funniest thing about the book is how accurate it was, it really had some very good points.

          5 out of 5 stars Hilarious.......2007-07-08

This is hilarious! Anyone who likes Jon Stewart will love this book. Although every page is laugh-out-loud funny, it still makes some very good political points, especially about President Bush II.

4 out of 5 stars Good, but flawed..........2006-06-04

President Bush really should read this book. I fear some of it would go right over his head, but still...

I laughed out loud for the first time on page viii, and pretty much every third page after that, but by page 25 I'd noted a serious flaw: most of the jokes aren't funny unless you have a postgraduate degree in history and/or have read stuff by old dead Greek guys. None of the people I grew up with would find this book amusing, which is a shame because they're precisely the ones who should be reading it.

I'm a big fan of Jon Stewart, and I'm no prude, but I found the frequent use of the 'f-word' more gratuitous than funny, and the first 'aside' by Rob Corddry was just offensive.

That being said, the book is well worth the time. If I were a college prof, this book would be a required text for my class in American history or government.

5 out of 5 stars fun to read .......2006-04-03

This book is funny and informative. What I especially like is that it is not mean-spirited or nasty, even to those public figures it lambasts. It's good, unpretentious fun with the kind of wit that makes politics fun to read about.

            5 out of 5 stars Why, it's fantastic!.......2000-07-26

Who would have guessed that such a simple, straightfoward musical would be the longest running show in New York history? Read this copy of the libretto, and you'll know why. The show is very simple and very honest. It has drama and lighthearted comedy in just the right amounts to create what is, in many ways, the perfect musical. This volume also contains lots of extra information about the show, including the lyrics to a new song written for the show in its later years, and a number of photos. The music is missing, of course, but even without the OCR to the show, you get a great sense here of what makes The Fantasticks so, well, fantastic.

5 out of 5 stars No Woder It's the Longest Running Show in American History!.......2000-06-08

It never fails to amaze me that Jones & Schmidt were capable of such powerful poetry while still studying for their masters degrees. This thesis show is a powerhouse of simplicity and a panorama of minimalism. Sound oxymoronic? It is. The show is so disceptively simple, but the stories it tells are universal, and they are guaranteed to ring true for even the most tarnished audience member. One read, and it won't be hard to "try to remember" this show for a long time!

5 out of 5 stars The most wonderful musical ever!.......2000-03-27

This is one of the most wonderful musicals ever. It has a wonderful story and plot but the best part about it is the music. The music is absolutely FANTASTICK! The musical contains a wide variety of songs, each with its own mood and purpose. There are funny and amuzing songs, ominous songs, loving songs, wishful songs... there's something for everybody. I first saw the Fantasticks in New York and fell in love with the music. I have almost all the songs completely memorized and I am working on putting a few of the song into my audition repertoire. This is music that every true musical fan should have. Its brilliant.

5 out of 5 stars An amazing look at the long life of The Fantasticks........1998-09-02

It has been two years since I was first introduced to The Fantasticks. Ever since I saw the show I have been captivated by its remarkable story, lyrics, and music. It was only recently that I read this 30th anniversary edition and truly found out how amazing this show is.

Tom Jones' personal account of The Fantasticks shows the reader what exactly goes in to a show before it actually debuts. The first section "Try to Remember" is well set as the first chapter of the book. The reader will benefit more from reading this chapter before the show.

The third section (the second was the libretto) is a look at the actors really shows you the life of the longest running Off-Broadway show.

I know my words cannot do justice to this amazing book. I would recommend this book to any die-hard Fantasticks fan, or to anyone interested in getting to know the best musical ever written.

This accessory provides a wealth of highly detailed information about all serpent-related creatures in the Forgotten Realms. Popular races such as the yuan-ti, naga, and various lizard races are explored at great length, with new monsters and new characters, deities, prestige classes, magic, and magic items tied to each race. In addition, many of the regions to which serpent folk are indigenous are explored in detail, many for the first time in a Forgotten Realms product.

Readers who buy these books should have an understanding that they can be great for inspiration purposes. People who get disappointed seem to do so because of some tidbit of reference material they were hoping would be there but wasn't. However it seems to me that there is still tons of other useful refernce material contained in these books to keep one occupied for a very long time. I agree they are pricey, but the material contained cannot just be scoffed at.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting information, contradicts other sources.......2005-08-29

Serpent Kingdoms continues the recent tradition of better FR products, improving substantially on such below average fare such as Races of Faerun and the Player's Guide. However, the new power of the Sarrukh and the information on the Yuan-ti religion contradicts other sources and seems to be setting the stage for a revision of Set's relationship with the Yuan-Ti.

I would recomend this book only to those looking to set a campaign outside of the usual areas or those who are very interested in the Yuan-Ti. The Sarrukh are too limited in number and location to be of much use in a gaming sense, though the information about them makes a great read.

The background on the Lizard Kings, Nagas, and other reptilian species is specious at best.

              5 out of 5 stars Gazetteer.......2004-10-03

Serpent Kingdoms is a Forgotten Realms release, which means it's going to be long on story and background and consequently a little short on feats, classes and other "crunchy" bits. This isn't a bad thing, it's just the way things are and you have to understand that any time you buy a book that's about a particular campaign setting it's going to have a lot more story and a lot less crunch than other books.
As far as content goes, I found the backstory interesting and several of the creatures mentioned will be making an appearance in my game shortly. I'm not running FR, but I do have a vile reptilian dictator to play with and Serpent Kingdoms gave me some great stuff I can drop right in, some ideas I can use with a little work, and some inspirations for my own game. Not bad for a gamer whose bookshelf beats most game stores.

I just recently purchased this book mainly because of a new novel I finished. It brought up an interest in the Yuan-Ti. I've been waiting for this book, Serpent Kingdoms, to come out so I could insorporate them into a campaign.
Yes, this book does have a lot of story. it is meant for DMs with imaginations to carry the story on into their campaigns, or even to start a campaign. I believe that was the purpose of this book. It gives an impressively large background on the different races of serpentlike beings. It does have a new monsters for the Dm to use, new feats that concern those new monsters (hint hint, not for the player), and it provides many different sites for the DM to use.
I say if you don't like the purpose and usability of this book, give it away. You're not hurting anyone but yourself as a DM. Even players can use this book. I, as a DM, will allow my players to use a few of the new monsters, or even the old ones now, as a player race.
All in all, this book is excellent for working into an ongoing campaign, or even to start up a new one. Create a new world with this book even (humans, elves, dwarves...slaves? sounds fun to me). I recommend this book to any DM who has given thought to using the serpent races more often in their worlds and to any DM is stuck with writing a new campaign. Players, check it out as well. Just remember to keep player knowledge from character knowledge. Have fun gaming!

Joan Wolf appeared on the medieval mystery scene with No Dark Place, which introduced readers to Hugh de Leon, a young 12th-century Norman accustomed to living by his wits, who unexpectedly discovers that he is heir to the powerful Earl of Wiltshire--and must grapple with the complications that accompany a lightning-fast rise in station. Since Hugh, however, is (of course) a natural paragon of grace, strength, and beauty, readers shouldn't worry about his ability to adapt. What they should worry about is the sad tendency for his nearest and dearest to get themselves into scrapes that only Hugh can get them out of.

In The Poisoned Serpent, Bernard Radvers, loyal friend to Hugh's late foster father, stands accused of murdering Gilbert de Beauté, Earl of Lincoln and pompous fool. Hugh feels the blow all the more sharply because of the motive attributed to Radvers: to help Hugh--declared by his uncle as betrothed to Gilbert's lovely and self-centered daughter--succeed to the earlship. Hugh's investigation leads him into the tangle of treacherous alliances that define English society during a civil war that pitches knight against knight, where loyalty can be bought with a title, and silence with a knife. He must face a phantasm from his past as well: the charismatic Richard Canville, son of the Sheriff of Lincoln. Hugh knows that Richard's handsome face hides a cold heart; does it also hide a murderous intent?

Wolf's characters are generally well-sketched; Cristen Haslin, whom Hugh loves deeply, is particularly appealing. Strong-willed and pragmatic, she is determined to help Hugh discover the identity of the murderer. The atmosphere of the novel, however, carries none of the persuasive, seemingly effortless detail popularized by Ellis Peters, whose Brother Cadfael mysteries have both charmed and educated readers for years. Wolf is too intent in her focus on the struggle between King Stephen and Empress Matilda, challenger to the throne; the fight is on every mind and on every tongue--but Wolf never moves beyond the most simplistic description and analysis of the rivalry. That said, the relationship between Hugh and Cristen should overwhelm even the weakest of political plots; it is a partnership that augurs well for future novels in the series. --Kelly Flynn

              Book Description

Bestselling author Joan Wolf is back with her eagerly anticipated second novel of murder and mystery in medieval times.

It is the winter of 1140 in Norman England, and the country is embroiled in a bitter civil war, with cousin against cousing in a battle for the crown.

Caught in the midst of this is Hugh de Leon, heir to an earldom. In addition to the political turbulence, Hugh has problems closer to home. The Lady Cristen, who holds Hugh's heart, is not highborn enough to be his wife. Instead, Hugh's uncle, Guy, has arranged a marriage with the comely but spoiled heiress, Elizabeth de Beaute, whose father has just been granted the earldom of Lincoln. The two fortunes combined would give the de Leons unparalleled power.

Scant days after Guy's announcement, the new earl is murdered, and Hugh's friend Bernard stands accused of the deadly deed. Therein lies Hugh's dilemma. He must elope with Cristen before Guy can stop them from marrying. Yet, while his happiness hangs in the balance, Hugh cannot let his friend die a wrongful death.

It is up to Hugh to expos the real killer, someone so calculating and brutal, someone so chillingly smart, that he has silenced all witnesses and covered his tracks. And Hugh must be careful, for both his sake and Cristen's, that when he grabs the serpent by its tail, he, too, does not get bitten.

5 out of 5 stars THE POISONED SERPENT Is A Lethally Intriguing Read!.......2007-05-03

This is the sequel to NO DARK PLACE and picks up where it left off. This novel is even better reading than the first! The characters are more fully fleshed out and personable. Cristin Haslin, daughter of Sir Nigel Haslin, the knight who recognized Hugh for who is really is and vassal of Earl Guy of Wiltshire, Hugh's uncle, become more than friends and it is Hugh's intention to marry her. His uncle, however, has different plans for his nephew and has him betrothed to Elizabeth deBeaute, daughter of the newly titled Earl of Lincoln. He wishes to increase his prestige and his lands.

Hugh, though, doesn't agree with this but before anything comes of it, Elizabeth's father is murdered in Lincoln. Hugh's family friend, Bernard, stands accused of the crime and is imprisoned until trial. Witnesses state that Bernard didn't like the new earl and wanted Hugh in his place as soon as possible.

Hugh and anyone who knows Bernard know that he is the scapegoat for the real murderer. Now Hugh must discover who the true murderer is before he can strike again. Hugh has suspicions that he knows who the real culprit is but has to prove his theory.

This novel read even more rapidly, if possible, than NO DARK PLACE! I read it in nearly a day! I also agree with book reviewer Kali "bengagirl" in the UK that these two novels were great reads and don't understand the bad reviews they've received! It's almost as though the people posting the less than complimentary reviews never even read the books! Or perhaps, weren't intested in historical fiction or mysteries. To the reviewer who didn't like the continual references to Hugh's debilitating headaches and subsequent illness must have never had a migraine or the ability to empathize with those of us who have!

I truly wish this series could have continued! Joan Wolf communicated to me via email that: "I'm sorry to have to report that my publisher canceled the Hugh deLeon series - apparently it did not sell well enough to suit them. The Road to Avalon is being republished this May, however..." I say SHAME ON THE PUBLISHER! What were they thinking? Apparently they weren't! The publisher should read all of the favorable reviews and start the series up again!

*This review refers to the First Edition Hardcover.

5 out of 5 stars A great sequel to No Dark Place.......2004-06-26

I loved "No Dark Place" but I liked this book even better!

Hugh de Leon has now been declared his Uncle's heir but he has more pressing concerns than becoming the next Earl of Wiltshire.

He's in deeply love with Cristen Haslin, daughter of one of his Uncle's Knights and he's knee deep in trouble, especially when the father of the woman his powerful Uncle wants him to marry (and it's not Cristen) is murdered and a dear friend is unjustly accused of the crime.

There is also the long fingered shadow from his adopted past, in the guise of the charming and charismatic Richard Canville, the son of the Sheriff of Lincoln.

Add to this two orphan children, several dogs, and a likable young Squire whose sense of honour is soon to be tested to the limit and you have a book you just don't want to put down!

Well worth taking on holiday with you for a jolly good "beach read" and what's better it can be read on its own without its prequel "No Dark Place."

              2 out of 5 stars Yawn...............2003-01-27

This book is supposedly a romance/mystery set in medieval times. Unfortunately, it renders neither a medieval nor a romantic feel and the "mystery" is pretty transparent from the beginning.

For much better medieval period romantic mysteries or just plain historical romance, try just about anything from Roberta Gellis. Although many of her novels contain very explicit sex scenes, these don't take away from the superb plotting and historical authenticity they showcase.

1 out of 5 stars Better than an old magazine.......2002-12-21

This was the first and last book I will read by Joan Wolf. It was a poor attempt at what promised to be an engaging historical mystery. The characters are flat and the story lacks the details that could have made this a much better book. Someone who does not normally read mystery or history may enjoy this. Let me amend that to say someone who does not read much at all would enjoy this. It may seem interesting compared to an old magazine in a doctor's office.
The story is nicely paced and does not drag too much; however, that is really the only favorable comment I can make about this book.
I really wonder how this book was even published; it is not a professional effort.

5 out of 5 stars The Poisoned Serpent.......2001-09-05

If you like mysteries ("who done it"), reading about medieval times or like stories that have a little romance, THIS is you BOOK! I would give development and the history of the characters a "B." The plot would be an "A-." "A+++" for the historical content. After reading a forth of the book, I couldn't put it down (especially in the last chapters). I am not a huge fan of mystery novels, but my book club was reading it. I ended up really enjoying the story.

For parents of children who read on an adult level and is searching for books that their children to read, this book contains one romantic instance that is not very inappropriate for children that are 12 years or older, in my point of view. The romantic instance is only one page long, too. I am constantly reading books with my 12-year-old niece (who is an advanced reader and mature for her age) in mind. I would feel secure in recommending this book to her parents. Moreover, teenagers in high school would be fine with the content if the story held their interest.

He hosted his hugely popular early morning daily devotional prayer program called "The Dew of Heaven" on one of the largest FM radio stations in Nigeria for three years. Today he serves the Lord by teaching congregations the truths he has gleaned from prayer, his experiences and the Word. Vincent has a Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering and apart from his ministry obligations, runs a successful independent automobile service facility in Nigeria. He has been married for eight years to his wife Joy and they have two beautiful daughters, Ketandu and Amara.
