Not just For Women Only!.......2007-09-11

Since this is the 289th review posted here, I can't see much point in writing an actual review. So , here are some of my favorite bits:

The recipes! This was totally unexpected, and I only read them because she's such a good writer. And the names! "Fat Mama's Knock You Naked Margaritas"! " Come Back Sauce"! "Danger Pudding"! -- the latter prepared by boiling an unopened can of condensed milk.... "You shouldn't do any of this yourself, because you could be killed. Come by my house, and I'll make it for us. I'm very brave."

"What to Eat Before and After an Assignation

Well, "before" is a no-brainer; you can't eat a damn thing. If you do, your stomach will pooch out like you're twelve month's pregnant, and it will ruin the lines of your trashy lingerie...."

"Chapter 10, Men Who Signal Danger.
Run away! Run Away!"

Chapter 11, Men Who May Need Killing. Which is where you'll find detailed instructions on what to do if you find a possum sleeping under your bed. At 2:30 AM.
"What would daddy do? He would know, without the slightest hesitation... Daddy picked a fine time to be dead for fifteen years..."

And I won't even try to describe the Houseguest's Dilemma: "...all the lights blazed on, and there stood her hosts, staring in bewildered disbelief at this grown woman squatting over and urinating into their very large mixing bowl."

This certainly isn't a "For Women Only" book -- indeed, it's as funny a book as I've read in quite awhile. You never know with humor, but if you like Florence King ("Confessions of a Failed Southern Lady"), definitely try Browne. And, if you've missed King, you're in for a treat there, too.

Not to be missed, if you're a fan of raunchy slapstick.

Couldn't stop laughing!.......2004-09-22

Jill Conner Browne has got to be the smartest, funniest, most charming woman on the planet. I've bought all of her books at least twice and can't keep any of them. Everytime I loan one to one of my friends they end up keeping it. Not only will you laugh yourself sick reading any of her wonderful books, they're full of good, sensible advice. Take a look at her financial planner's rule #1 Hope Daddy lives forever. That's good advice if ever there was some. Check out the chapter in The Book of Love entitled, "Men who just need killing." Also good advice.
So here's my advice, buy the book. Buy all the books. Buy several because you won't be able to keep them either. I'm thinking of handing them out as Christmas presents. Oh, yeah, and if Jill ever runs for President every woman I know will vote for her!

A little forced... .......2006-07-14

Well written, but a little forced. The author's preconceived theory (a connection between Romero's works and the literary Naturalism inspired by Emile Zola) overwhelms almost every other aspect of his critical analysis and prevails on more objective aspects of Romero's art; not to mention the historical and documentary insight, which is very poor here. Unfortunately, Williams never doubts of his critical intuitions in this book, despite G. A. Romero himself never mentioned any link between his movies and Zola or others. Maybe a relashionship between Naturalism and Romero could have been an interesting idea, but to say that every single element of his work is probably linked to Dreiser, Zola or Norris, is really too much. Nevertherless, the book examines every single movie of Romero's filmography as far as "Bruiser": it is the most exhaustive (even if one-sided) critical essay about his films up to now.

Romero - More than just a zombie maker.......2006-02-22

I doubt there's a single horror-movie fan on this entire earth who doesn't know who George A. Romero is, the creator of zombie classics Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead, and Day of the Dead (and the fourth one, Land of the Dead, however, this movie hadn't yet been made when The Cinema of George A. Romero came out and thus it's not included in the book).

But Romero is more than just a creator of zombies, and Tony Williams presents in his book a study of all Romero's movies, not just the ones where the living dead stumbles around in the streets, looking for the next human being they can get a snack from. Romero is a creator of movies where he likes to make a point, or points; he has tons of thoughts and ideas - and especially social criticism - that he includes in his work, and Williams manages to offer a clear picture of Romero's complete production and the reasons as to why it looks the way it does.

This is most definitely a book for movie-lovers, and even though it happens to be a scholarly book this still doesn't mean that movie-lovers who are not scholars cannot get something good out of it. Or put in other words, The Cinema of George A. Romero is a book that can be read by all, scholars as well as non-scholars.

But even though Romero, as we all know, not only masters how to create creepy zombies it's still these creatures and the movies they star in that most people think of when they hear his name. And perhaps that isn't much of a surprise, considering how immensely popular they still are, despite having been made quite a few years ago. The horror genre of today isn't what it used to be, and most contemporary horror flicks are "almost entirely devoid of social meaning and dependent upon gratuitous sensationalism" (p. 21).

Well, not so with the ones made by Romero, and this book will most definitely tell you the reasons why.

A Well-Deserved Comprehensive Critical Treatment .......2006-02-07

I am submitting these comments largely to serve as a sort of counterpoint to those of N. P. Stathoupolous. Mr./Ms. Stathoupolous's point regarding the arid, academic tenor of this work is valid. I would suggest, however, that the popular critical evaluations of Romero's better known films for which Mr./Ms. Stathoupolous is looking have already been published; while a comprehensive academic evaluation of the whole of Romero's oeuvre was lacking. I feel that Mr. Williams has done a great service to american cinephiles by giving Romero's corpus the complete exegesis that it deserves. It is unfortunate that the academic community has a general tendency to view the horror genre as somewhat less than true cinematic art. I think it would be an equal disservice for the genre fans of Romero's zombie films to similarly dismiss Mr. Williams' fine work out of hand.

Why do they come here?.......2004-09-21

When you see a book titled 'The Cinema of', you know it's supposed to be serious. (Instead of 'The Films of', 'The Movies of', etc.)

Williams, who did a good book about families in the American horror film (Hearths of Darkness) asserts that much of Romero's work is connected with the naturalist tradition of writers like Zola. He also traces lines to EC comics, and connects up Romero works like Dawn of the Dead with the director's hometown of Pittsburgh and a certain vision of a consumerist society that masks a certain social decay.

The problem with books like this, however good the points they make, is often the language and the presentation. There is a large body of Romero fans, particularly Dawn of the Dead fans who may appreciate a 'serious' consideration of the director's films (or his 'cinema'). However, I think most fans are alienated by work like this, which is too stuck in academia and is often bloated by unnecessarily flowery language and interpretation to appeal to the people who are watching these films regularly. It's unfortunate, because film is such a mass, popular medium, and yet the academic study of the medium is too stuck in the ivory tower. It seems like you can't just write the obvious, or even just discuss the films if you want to be taken seriously. In order to be write a 'serious' book about an American indie's 'cinema', you have to wrap it up in frameworks that are as lifelike as some of Romero's zombies. The book certainly has good points to make and provides some food for thought (or flesh for thought), but I found it a bit much at times as Williams almost painfully recounts scenes from the films with weighty pronouncements (not particularly backed up) and also, annoyingly, gets names and quotes wrong (fact-checking).

Maybe Romero will return to the sub-genre he created with a film about zombies running rampant in a university...

I initially bought this book because I was looking for a good quick reference for chords. I've tried various things before I decided to buy a book, including writing out all the chord variations that I find, drawing out finger shapes from chord diagrams, etc. Eventually, I decided that I need a pre-defined system in an encyclopedic format - otherwise I would keep grabbing specific information out of context.

This book does a few things well. One, there are a lot of chords. They are all the common chords that you will find in rock, jazz, and blues. They are available in every key, in well-labeled diagrams (with fingering, tone chords, fret, deadened strings, everything else you would expect), and a standard notation of the chord. This book also has several available positions of each chord.

The information is presented in a very organized fashion. Each key is organized by the chord quality. First, you find all the major chords. Next, all the minor chords. Following are the dominants, diminished, and augmented/suspended chords (each building in complexity progressively). While it becomes clear, with rigorous study, that the positions wrap around, it is nonetheless useful that each key is presented on its own in relationship to its other positions.

This part of the book has two slight problems. First, all chords are in root position - there are no inversions. While this is advantageous to someone who first starts out playing jazz for example, this bit of information becomes useful once you start studying extended tonality. Second problem, the standard notation only denotes the closed position of the chord in root position. Although the notes in the chord a verbally spelled out, it helps to see the staff representation to help visualize the chord - at least for me.

The last three sections (Power chords, slash chords, transposing) are pretty useless. They hint at presentation of certain theoretical concepts, but really fall short of even a sufficient cursory overview. Luckily, they don't comprise a large portion of the book.

Overall, this is a nice, concise reference. The quality of the cover, pages, and binding is good. Stuff is easy to find - each key is tabbed on the side for easy access. There is no text, only the diagrams. If this sounds like what you're looking for, this book is for you.

An excellent library of chords and different voicings........2001-05-09

The black book of Guitar chords is relatively small and portable. It's 269 pages of chord tabs and all the different voicings you may or may not desire. It includes power chords, slash chords, and a small section on transposing. If you seek any information on theory, this is not the book for you. It contains no information on theory. However, if you are looking for hundreds of different ways to play chords, the black book of guitar chords is wonderful.

I've tried a few texts for teaching music fundamentals to non-music majors and this is one of the better books. I really like that the book starts with the keyboard as a visual representation of music theory. The book could use updated music excerpts/examples. Also- the fact that students tear out workbook pages renders the book invalid for buyback programs. A separate workbook would be a much better option for college use.

Gary White takes a different approach to learning the study of music, one which should serve as a model for other books of this type. Much more focus is pute on interaction and music-making (i.e., active, rather than passive learning). This can be used independently of a classroom experience, though it is intended for that situation, and works better when there is a teacher to clarify notational issues.

This is a great game for gamers that like gory games and jokes that are only funny in the game. BloodRayne 2 is alot better than the first one but to understand the 2nd one you must get the first BloodRayne.

Great game. I had a blast playing it. Especially using the cheat modes. I mean how can you not like a half naked vampire, with six sexy outfits and some badass weaponry.
