Paperback vs Hardcover!.......2007-05-25
Many of the listings on Amazon are for the paperback version. The binding was changed from paperback to hardcover after many sellers listed their paperback. Check individual listings to see which are the actual 1984 hardcover printing!
Bambi by Felix Salten.......2005-12-14
-A good touching story, kind of sad when Bambi's mother died :( Lots a various emotions.
Bambi.......2003-01-21
Bambi is a nice drama of real life. It states how life goes. It shows that sometimes you have to go on without your parents that they wont always be there. It also states that your friends & loved one's can be there to lean on & help you get on your feet again. If you're looking for a good book to explain life to kids then this is it. It is a good book to start conversations about life to little kids as well.
Disney's Sketchbooks - Great Resource for Artists!.......2001-03-27
This fine addition to the Disney Sketchbook series has many of the wonderful sketches done by Disney's animation department for Bambi, including many pieces from the storyboards, and several sketches of scenes that never made it into the final film. Artists that would like to study the Disney style of drawing and animation should find this volume a terrific addition to their collection despite its rather high price. As a student of art, and a fan of the Disney style, I highly recommend any of these books for your library.
A Fine Idea - Now Let's Have One For 'Beauty and the Beast'!.......2000-09-30
I have browsed a copy of this book in an animation gallery and was impressed by the work within - certainly a marvellous way to explore the drawings that make up these films.
Let's hope Disney continue this series and quickly release Glen Keane's awesome character sketches and pencil development from 'Beauty and the Beast'! That is what I'm *really* waiting for!

Book Description
A collection of the first five years of "Piled Higher and Deeper," a comic strip about life (or lack thereof) in graduate school, as it originally appeared in Stanford University's "The Stanford Daily Newspaper" and online at phd.stanford.edu.
"Piled Higher and Deeper" the comic strip is currently read by grad students from over 300 universities and from around the world.
Customer Reviews:
Probably the Best Comic Strip Out There.......2007-08-28
As a second-year grad student, I have REALLY appreciated Cham's comic. It has kept me sane in the dark days of thesis writing :).
Having said that, even if you're not a grad student (or if you know and love one) this comic may help you understand what they go through better than anything else. You may not be in the center of the insanity, but this is pretty close to it.
Another waste of money.......2007-05-13
Not funny. It goes in the trash so no one else has
to read it.
Wonderful book!.......2007-04-23
Interesting, just like some clips of your life, very funny
Go and get all of them
Yes, grad school is really like that.......2007-04-15
I finished my Ph.D. more years ago than I will admit to in public, but virtually all of what Jorge Cham writes about is true, including the long hours, the lack of money, the effect it has on your diet and even (especially) the way undergrads wear you down when you're a T. A. (teaching assistant). About the only difference between what he draws and the reality that I lived through (artistic license taken into account) is that PCs were not really around when I was in grad school (although they were just on the horizon).
This book saved my life!.......2007-04-03
PHD is a great source of Ramen and procrastination. It makes you love and embrasse your inner geek... It totally rocks!!!

Customer Reviews:
Great book ... but only people who have been in grad school will get the jokes.......2007-06-12
If you're a grad student you will find all kinds of situations in this book that mirror your life. What better than to be able to laugh at them?
Waste of money.......2007-05-13
Can't think of any reason to keep this book. It's just
not funny. I'm going to throw it away, something I've
never done before.
Good Comic Strip for PHD students.......2007-04-04
pretty "accurate" funny description of life of PhD students, may not appear be funny to people who are not PhD students, because only had you been there could you understand what the author tried to put.
It's sad, it's funny, it's true, it's my lyfe.......2007-03-26
I love this strip. It's a portrait of the life of grad students in any area, in any university, in any country. I can't wait for the third book
Fun Book.......2007-01-18
Purchased for Christmas for my daughter - a PhD student. the entire family had alot of laughts with this book.
I would only recommend if there is a PhD student in the midst.
The humor is accurate per my daughter.
This would be a great gift for any PhD student.

Eden Built by Eves
Bonnie J. Morris
Manufacturer: Alyson Publications
ProductGroup: Book
Binding: Paperback
ASIN: 1555834779 |
Amazon.com
Longtime festival enthusiast Bonnie J. Morris offers a thorough, if somewhat breathless, survey of the 25-year history of women's music festivals, drawing on interviews with performers, producers, and technicians, as well as her own extensive archives and journals. "What binds us together [at festivals] is twofold," she affirms, "the collective experience of the music and the collective safety of being in woman-loving space." Many of the women quoted applaud the summer festivals as refuges from misogyny and homophobia, "fantasy islands" that can sustain them for the rest of the year. The restrictions most lesbians face in ordinary life are brought home by the editor's decision not to publish any photographs of happy crowd scenes, in case a woman pictured should lose her job or her children. As well as backstage politics and artistic trends, Morris describes the early performances of successful crossover artists such as Melissa Etheridge, who was once threatened with a boycott by anti-S/M festivalgoers who misheard her line "Meet me in the woods" as "Beat me in the woods." Possibly worth reading just for chapter titles like "There's a Nursing Baby in the Mosh Pit." --Regina Marler

We never did this stuff at Girl Scout camp..........1999-07-16
If you've ever wondered what a women's music festival is all about, who goes and what really happens there, then this book is a must. With wonderfully visual anecdotes, quotes and stories from performers, festi-goers, producers and techies, as well as the histories of festivals themselves, "Eden Built By Eves" will take you on the journey without having to pack up the car! Whether you're a "festie-virgin" and have never been, or a seasoned veteran of the phenomena that is this culture, this book will make you wish you had planned to take the Summer off just so that you could attend each festival described. Amid the history and politics, controversies and laughter, sometimes painful truths and hilarious stories, you'll meet the women of the festival world who have helped to create this amazing culture. Buy this book and be prepared to stay up late reading it. You'll be very glad you did!
An articulate, "you-are-there" account of women's festivals........1999-05-10
As a prolific journal-writer and a "festiegoer" for eleven years, I couldn't wait to get my hands on this book. It more than lived up to my expectations. Page by page, the experiences came back--I reminisced with hilarity and with tears as memories of experiences at Michigan and Bloomington came flowing back. The names are all here--the humor, the in-jokes, the photographs, the cartoons, the controversies...and most of all, a strong sense of one's tribe finally being acknowledged and honored. I related to the author when she described her many hours of sitting unobtrusively through concerts, chronicling her impressions in her journal - insights and observations that would later make up this treasure of a book. It brought back fond memories of sitting on my tarp during Acoustic Stage at Michigan, blank book on my lap. What an affirmation! What a treasure! Four stars for Bonnie Morris. I not only ordered this book for myself, but for the public library where I work, and I hope it will be widely read.

Book Description
Garry Kasparov has dominated the chess world for more than twenty years. His dynamism and preparation have set an example that is followed by most ambitious players. Igor Stohl has selected the best and most instructive games from Kasparov's later years, and annotated them in great detail. The emphasis is on explaining the thought behind Kasparov's decisions, and the principles and concepts embodied by his moves. Stohl provides a wealth of fresh insights into these landmark games, together with many new analytical points. This makes the book outstanding study material for all chess enthusiasts.
Customer Reviews:
Stohl is Superb!.......2006-12-26
If you're the type of hardcore chessplayer who isnt satisfied by the average 'best games' anthologies, thinking the analysis either too skimpy or full of too much calculation and not enough words - pick up these two vols of perhaps the greatest player of all time. Stohl annotates these games the way I wish most anthologies were annotated. Lots of calculation, but lots of words explaining the ideas as well. The book (hardback) is nice and big, well put together and easy to work with. The games are of course breathtaking and I hope one day Stohl works on the games of my favorite player, Karpov. I have over 20 anthologies of great players, but these two vols are by far the most impressive analytical work. They are absolutely perfect for "Kotov Sessions". The author may be criticized for being a bit cold and removed, but I'm looking for hardcore top level chess and I am 100% satisfied with this work. Beyond Impressive.
A must for all players........2006-09-03
Without doubt, Garry Kasparov should be considered the greatest palyers of all times. Not only his ELO rating 2851, the quality of games are all speaking for themselves. Yes, Fischer in the period 1970 -1972, I think his strength was on par with him.( in fact the two giants's style of play are very similar!!) But only 3 years!! Kasparov dominated the chess world for 20 years. He accepted all the challeges from the old masters, like Karpove and Korchnoi, he defeated his comtemparies like Hubner, etc,
and even the younger stars, except Kramnik, cannot give him much trouble. I think the other player can stand with him was Lasker. Who before World War, dominted the chess world for 27 years and also never afraid any challanges to him!!
The two volumes are must for all players, no matter what level your are!!
Garry's Vol 1.......2006-08-13
The collections of games in this book are interesting and allow the average player to see how even master play has mistakes to be taken advantage of. Kasparov is one of the best players ever and this volume is even more entertaining than Vol 2 with his youthful dynamic play. Igor Stohl examines these games with current understanding of thematic analysis of the master level play. I have bought both volumes and enjoyed both books.
Well done analysis.......2006-03-01
Stohl's book on Kasparov's greatest games, pre-1994, is terrific. The layout is easy to follow and the analysis sharp. I anxiously await volume 2.
Reminder of a remarkable talent.......2006-02-15
Do you realise that it is nearly 20 years since a collection of Kasparov's games appeared? Remarkable but true. So such a book as this is certainly not premature, though one might think that the author was clairvoyant in view of the fact that its publication coincides with Kasparov's shock declaration of his retirement from competitive chess.
In this, the first of two volumes, the author takes 74 of Kasparov's best games from the period 1973-1993, and subjects them to a detailed analysis. The author is well known for his analytical writings, and has already had published by Gambit a collection of games (Instructive Modern Chess Masterpieces) based on his column in a Czech magazine.
In this book he has drawn on a wide variety of sources, including Kasparov's own annotations, and the emphasis lies in explaining the thought processes behind the moves. It is impossible for me to say anything about Kasparov that has not been said before, but for a reminder of the remarkable talent that now appears to be lost to the chess world I recommend that you simply read and enjoy!
This review first appeared in 'En Passant' magazine.

Now, beginning and intermediate players - 90% of the chess playing audience - can benefit from his wisdom. Packed with diagrams and easy-to-understand pointers showing what Kasparov was thinking and how players can apply these concepts and strategies to their own games, this great learning tool borrows from the grace and power of Kasparov's greatest games.
Customer Reviews:
Kasparov games.......2005-09-11
I have three books on Garry Kasparov. Garry Kasparov by Igor Stohl, Garry Kasparov Fighting Chess and this book. This book by far is the easiest to follow. It is geared towards the Class C player with just enough variations to keep your head spinning. Some of the games in this book are amazing and require more analysis. For that I recommend you go to Igor Stohl's book on Garry Kasparov. Tweleve of the games in this book can be found annotated in Garry Kasparov by Igor Stohl, and are analyzed in much more detail. This book has eight unique games which I have not been able to find in my Stohl book. If you just want to enjoy a few of Garry's games without going into detailed analysis this book is good for bed side reading. If you want more detailed analysis and move by move variations I would recommend the Stohl's book. The reason I give this book 4 stars is that some of the moves were not highlighted in bold and due to editorial mistakes. It seems this book did not have an editor as there are a couple of mistakes in it, but none that you cannot recover from. This book also has a nice biography on Garry Kasparov and filled with stories in each game to keep the reader entertained.
Too many errors!.......2005-07-05
There are 20 games in this book and I am on game 4. The number of errors in this book is pretty annonying. Usually the main line of a game is in bold face. In this book some of the main line moves are not in bold face. This makes it harder to follow the main line when the author is talking about different variations. Some of the diagrams are wrong as well. The games are instructive and this would be a great book in my opinion if all the errors were corrected. Didn't anyone proof read this!? I give this book 3 stars only because of the instructive value of the games and annotations.
What do you learn??.......2005-06-03
This, like all other Schiller books is a piece of worthless garbage. First: it doesn't explain the reasoning behind many of the moves, second: Schiller obviously wants to crawl into a bed with Kasparov, and third: there are atleast three typos on every page. If you want a real book on chess by one by Irvin Chernev or Patrick Wolff
