Book Description
"You find yourself drifting when you become aware of the arrangement of trees behind a freeway sound barrier, when you wait for the container ship to disappear beyond the horizon, when you sit and listen to the ambient noise of distant traffic, unconcerned that most people would consider this a waste of time."
From the moments described above, emerges a captivating sketchbook from
Christian Schellewald. Art Director Schellewald has taken time away from the world of entertainment design to create vignettes that capture his everyday observations of living in California, specifically Los Angeles and San Francisco. When viewing such delicate yet compelling sketches, one feels as though Schellewald's memories are his or her own traveling between these two cities through his eyes and artwork.
Customer Reviews:
Amazing sketch book.......2006-06-22
In the flood of published sketch and artists books, this one stands as a real valuable and personal contribution. The artwork is loose, atmospheric and truthful in its portrayal of the real world, not the artificially contrived and prettyfied world of other so-called artists. Christian's artwork in the film production of "The Road to EL Dorado" or "Over the Hedge" is fantastic. Here we have a much looser version of the artist at work.
It is what is missing that forces me to take one star of the review. It doesn't explain the circumstances and media in which this sketches were made. The notes in each sketch are great to convey the sense of a diary but techniques and media are a mistery and for those who would like to learn something about the making of the artwork, there is not even a footnote. I think a technical prologue or epilogue would have rounded up a great book.
An excellent source of inspiration!.......2006-06-05
I have never been to any of the places mentioned in the book, but I know them from different media and I feel that "LA/SF" conveys their flavor and atmosphere very well. The sketches in the book are very lively and the colorations are great as well.
I recommend this book to anyone into art/sketches/California!
It's cover is coated with fabric and it is stable and nice. The paper is white, glossy and suits most of the sketches very well. The quality of the prints could be better and some of the (meagre)texts such as translations or the text on the cover are layouted badly.
Don't get distracted by my little negative critiqe as the pictures easily make up for this tiny flaw. Flipping through this book was a treat and made me dream about California!

Book Description
No more punch lines that just slipped away. No more names on the tip of your tongue. No more senior moments! Drawing on cutting-edge neurological research, how to keep your brain alive: 83 neurobic exercises brings help to everyone whose memory is starting to slip. Devised by Dr. Lawrence Katz, a professor of neurobiology at Duke University Medical Center, and Manning Rubin, author of 60 Ways to Relieve Stress in 60 Seconds, here is a regimen of mental cross-training that can be done anywhere, by anyone, at any time of day. The premise is simple: When you exercise the brain, you release natural growth factors called neurotrophins, which in turn enhance the brain's level of fitness. And nothing so easily stimulates the brain as breaking routines and using the five senses in new and unexpected ways. So if you're right-handed, wake up tomorrow and brush your teeth with your left hand. Or close your eyes before you get into the car and then get the key into the ignition. Every time you open a new circuit in your brain, it's like doing a round of mental sit-ups, without the pain.
68,000 copies in print.

Might well be a recipe for ulcers , heart attacks and strokes:
reminds me of the latest fad diet. The Complete Scarsdale Medical Diet: Plus Dr. Tarnower's Lifetime Keep-Slim Program
Taking advantage of an aging generation of baby boomers who worry
about their future is somewhat reprehensible.
In my psychology class we had to study
a case history of monkey's that psychologists gave ulcers by " shaking things up a bit".
Stone age hunter gathers mostly lived to a ripe old age of 25:
so emulating them is probably very bad advise.
Point by point the book's prescriptions can be one for an early death
for people who haven't already taken good care of themselves.
The most important thing in keeping your brain alive
is not believing you are too old to think.
Distrust doctors trying to get rich by publishing
a cheap popular book without much real substance that you can read in 10 minutes.
Interesting but a bit impractical. . ........2007-03-08
"Keep Your Brain Alive" offers some fairly standard advice on how to keep the mind agile as one ages. You've heard it before--be social, learn new things and new ways of doing routine tasks, use all the senses. The unique aspect of this particular book is the suggested exercises, but here the author veers away from the practical a little too strongly for my taste. He's big on exercising the sense of smell, and recommends driving around with a bunch of bottles with fragrance soaked pieces of sponge. Then uncork a particular one when you pass a specific place to fix it more firmly in your mind. I think if I did this my husband would begin having serious doubts about my state of mind--with good reason! I thought some suggestions could be dangerous, such as wandering around your home with lights off to activate the other senses--not a good idea for an older person, just as "uncork bottle while driving" is not a good idea. The scientific explanations are excellent--very clear and easy to understand--but I'd take the exercises with a big grain of salt!
Rip.......2007-02-14
I'm very disappointed with this book. It's based on fundamentally solid brain science and offers the following to strengthen your brain (i.e. build and activate new neural connections): "1. Involve one or more of your senses in a novel (new) context, 2. Break a routine activity in an unexpected, nontrivial way."
Basically, by breaking the routine and forcing yourself to learn new things or different ways of doing old things, new connections will develop within your brain and create thought processing and longevity benefits. If you're right-handed, start forcing yourself to use your left hand (I was taught this aspect almost 30 years ago). Take different routes to work. Start using other senses to take in data. You see a widget. You normally recognize it as such and move on. Here, it is suggested to pick it up, feel it, examine it, smell it, listen to it and more connections will develop. Go out and socialize. Nothing challenges the mind more than interacting with new people.
O.K. This is all good, valuable information. But the proceeding paragraph pretty much sums it up. The other 100 or so pages in this book are fluff, with examples of achieving novelty. This is appropriate for a magazine article, not a nine dollar book. In fact, it seems suspiciously similar to a recent Time article on brain science. Wow, this was churned out fast.

Book Description
A Fire Inside may have released their first chart-topping major label album "Sing the Sorrow" in 2003, but the Bay Area band's fire began its slow burn over a decade ago. Years of near constant touring have garnered the band a reputation for passionately powerful live shows, and through pure word of mouth they have built an intensely devoted worldwide fan base.
Lead singer Davey Havok, guitarist Jade Puget, drummer Adam Carson, and bass player Hunter have crafted a sound so distinctive it defies punk/goth/hardcore labels thrown its way. To further keep us guessing, AFI's music is continually evolving, surprising even its most loyal followers.
Here is the full story behind AFI's hard-won success from humble high school beginnings to unimagined heights six albums later as the fire burns brighter than ever. Over 60 black-and-white and color photos included.
Customer Reviews:
UNAUTHORIZED .......2007-05-24
This book was written and published WITHOUT the consent of the band. I am a fan of AFI and out of respect for them, I would never purchase this book; I urge all AFI fans as well as anyone interested in purchasing this book to do the same.
afi fans will appreciate this!.......2007-05-14
I read the other reviews before buying and I bought it anyway. I thought the pictures inside were amazing and the book was well worth my money.
Great Music Book.......2007-01-15
I found the book suprisingly refreshing not be full of gossip about the band. Instead we get the real story of AFI formation as band. I also loved the behind the scenes concert photos.
ok book, but unauthorized.......2006-12-18
The book is quite complete up until 2004, but doesn't provide any information or pictures you can't find online for free. Also, people buying this book for the pictures should keep in mind that all but four pages are black-and-white.
The most important thing to consider before buying is that the book is unauthorized, and the band was very disappointed that the author and publisher are using AFI's story, pictures, name, and reputation to make a profit. If your conscience is fine with ripping off the band, then it's a good buy.
What a great book.......2005-03-18
This book is cool. there was a lot of controversy on whether buying it was disrespectful to AFI because they didn't know it was coming out until after it did. But Its just a book. If you are an AFI fan that reads a lot of interviews or knows the history of the band then there won't be anything new it except pictures that are rare. If you want to know more about AFI then this would be a very good book to read. It is easy to read I read it in 45 minutes and it has boring moments but it's cool to have for all the pictures and stuff

Advanced Conventions.......2006-01-04
Terrific reference book. Covers Forcing No Trump, responding to preempts, Snapdragon Doubles, Unusual v. Unusual, Puppet Stayman, 1430 RKC, Q bidding, and many others. The good thing about this book is that it covers ALL aspects of each convention, from the first bid to all follow-up bids and responses.
What's in this book????.......2005-10-14
I'm considering whether to buy this book since I enjoyed the earlier book but there is NO information provided. This is NOT like Amazon. Clicking on the Table of Contents brings up a supposedly earlier version of this book that has nothing to do with advanced bridge conventions.
If anyone knows how to find out which conventions are described in the book, you would do a great service by letting the rest of us know.
Good overview of essential bidding conventions - but shallow.......2003-10-29
I suppose this book fulfills its purpose of providing an exposure to basic bidding conventions, and, from this perspective, its a good starting point. However, since it does cover so many conventions, the explanation and examples and not as in depth as a serious bridge player would like to see. I gave this book 4 stars because I think that it is a good reference book that should be in your bridge book library because it serves as a starting point for developing a bidding system. Serious players will want to go into more depth regarding the conventions that they decide to employ and should refer to other, focused books for comprehensive explanations.

Listening to pirate radio is perfectly legal—and frequently an ear-opening experience. This book makes it easier for you to locate and tune in pirate stations—and tells you all about the unlicensed broadcasters who play David to broadcasting conglomerates’ Goliath. * Explains how to buy and use equipment to listen to pirate stations

* Explains how pirates have "gone legit" on the Internet, with "how-to-listen" directions, and hard-to-find pirate URLs
* Showcases stations operating since at least 1995
* Provides details on political, local, holiday, and special-events pirates
* Tells you about offshore, European, and pirate stations around the world
* Takes you inside illegal stations, some of which have up to 75 volunteers
* Shows you how the FCC tracks pirates and often enforces its regulations harshly
* Gives you a CD with over 80 minutes of audio from dozens of underground stations
Customer Reviews:
Superb and riveting book on 'Pirate Radio'!.......2007-03-15
As an avid SWL (shortwave listener) and Ham Radio Operator, I could not put this book down! It is very well researched, with excellent illustrations and photos. It also comes with an audio CD with clips of many various 'pirate radio' transmissions. Popular frequencies where you can actually hear some of these stations are listed, and I was able to pull in a few the first night of listening! Highly recommended, and highly interesting!
Great for free radio lovers.......2003-01-06
I did buy the book and I have been reading it completely.
And I did learn my friends. I am a pirate radio operator for years but still nice things to find out about Pirating. I like it a lot and also nice to see how other stations are doing it and finding out about their history's.
Also the book to buy if you want to tune in to al kinds of pirate radio like TV,hf,vhf, internet,fm. You name it.
This is good, but the Net is better.......2002-09-30
This is a good review of SWLing and pirate radio, but the Internet is better.
Of particular notice is the typeface selected by the publisher. It is bizarre--meant as a display typeface, I'm sure. The effect is that this book is almost impossible to read and frankly, it hurts my eyes.
