This impressive book by photographer David Coulson and co-author Alec Campbell is a comprehensive study of the rock paintings and engravings of the African continent.

Chapter I deals with the history and peoples of Africa, with special chapters on the Bushmen and Bantu-speaking people. Chapter II is a discussion of rock art and speculations on who the artists were, including the latest research.

Chapter III explores the styles, subject matter and the specific rock art sites, whilst Cheaper IV is devoted to dating. Chapter V deals with Southern Africa under heading for Zimbabwe, Namibia, the southwestern Cape, the Maluti and Drakensberg mountains, the inland plateau and the Tsodilo hills.

The following two chapters are devoted to Eastern and Northern Africa respectively, whilst Chapter VIII discusses the geometric designs and the style called Late White paintings. Chapter IX considers aspects of preservation and the future of Africa's rock art.

The book contains 400 full colour photographs and line drawings plus 7 maps. These photographs also include living people and animals. The maps depict Africa, the language groups, African peoples, the distribution of rock art on the continent, and the specific distribution in Southern, Eastern and Northern Africa respectively.

This classic work concludes with a glossary, bibliography and index. I would also like to recommend the books The Cave Of Altamira, edited by Antonio Beltran, and The Mind In The Cave by Lewis-Williams.

Michael Nastasi has an amazing talent for photographing dogs. His photos are playful, heartwarming and beautiful...you feel as though you've been given a glimpse into the soul of each of his canine subjects. Anyone who wants to know anything about sleeping and dreaming in the movies MUST read this book. It is insightful and extremely well written. It was a fun read that was also educational. I can't wait to read Halpern's other book "Reel Romance."

Leslie Halpern's "Dreams on Film" is a masterful and provokative book that explores the dreamlike quality of movies. Drawing upon her expertise in both psychology and film studies, Halpern creates a spellbinding analysis of what makes films function the way they do, and she answers many of the questions that we have upon leaving a darkened theater: Why do certain movies literally cast a spell over us? In what ways are dreams and movies a fundamentally similar experience? How successful are certain films in depicting the dream state? This book will be an important addition to any movielover's library. I highly and passionately recommend it.

Thought provoking, entertaining and easy to read.......2003-09-02

I wasn't sure what to expect when I picked up this book, but was impressed from the beginning! It is not only easy to read, but had me thinking about so many films that I had seen that are discussed in the book. I'm now interested in seeing other movies that the book analyses. There are a variety of wonderful movie photos throughout the book to enhance the text. Areas covered include nightmares, dream symbols, interpretation, and more. You can see that the author has put a lot of thought and research into this book. I highly recommend it!

Who Knew?.......2003-07-31

My son is a Film School graduate and I picked up this book with him in mind. I'm a mental health/philosophy nerd and was pleasantly surprised to find much of interest for myself. Dream Theory and film representation is explicated and we get to talk about Freud, Jung and the Bible. I now have an expanded DVD rental list and I'm sending a copy of this book to my son. There's a college course here but don't let that spoil your fun.

This would be a great book for film studies as well as psychology classes. After reading DREAMS ON FILM, my video rental wish list expanded tremendously. If you're looking for a book that is both entertaining as well as edifying, check it out.

Introduction to Loudspeaker Design is written for hobbyists, technicians, and engineers seeking an introductory overview of the technology of loudspeakers. Starting with a brief history of audio developments the book begins by introducing the concepts of frequency, pitch, and loudness and proceeds to develop the idea of a loudspeaker as a system with performance that can be accurately predicted using simulation techniques not unlike those used to design electronic circuits. The work is largely qualitative with an occasional mathematical example. In addition to providing a clear discussion of closed and vented type loudspeaker enclosures the work also covers bandpass enclosures and includes a complete design example for a dipole loudspeaker.

The richly illustrated deluxe paperback edition also covers such advanced topics as loudspeaker design tradeoffs, spatial loading, diffraction loss, cavity effect, and enclosure construction. A complete chapter is devoted to the subject of crossover design. The appendices contain technical references, design aids, and charts summarizing the properties of 18 different loudspeaker enclosure types.

An introduction to the world of loudspeakers.......2006-08-21

This book gives the basics of loudspeaker and basic filter design. The types and basic formulations besides the history. If you are new to the subject and still haven't decided to pick loudspeaker building as a hobby or not, this book can give you a broad idea about what is happening inside the world of loudspeakers. The language is simple and easy to follow. The sections are well organized. There are no in depth explanations that can scare the beginners away. A good collection of simple questions and answers like; where should I place the port or SPL, Size and Bass relation. I think the book covers all the common questions that beginners are afraid to ask.

Readable - But Lacking in Design Detail.......2005-01-19

This is a well written easy to understand book. But if you're interested in designing loudspeakers, this book is lacking.

This book is clearly and concisely written with good supporting graphics. Mr. Murphy does a great job of qualitatively explaining speaker design but leaves out two of the most important quantitative design topics: 1. How to design an enclosure. 2. How to size inductors and capacitors in cross over networks. It seams like these topics could have been covered more deeply, and other more advanced topics deferred. For example, Mr. Murphy commits several pages to warning about summing errors with electronic crossovers (which is a real concern), but there are no pages committed to how to design a Butterworth or Linkwitz-Riley filter he discusses in the book.

I rate this book low because I was expecting more design detail. This book may be of value to you if you're thinking about speaker and just what to know what's involved. Also, if you're shopping for loudspeakers, this book will certainly make you a savvier consumer.

Inappropriately titled--grossly incomplete "introduction".......2002-06-06

Murphy explains in the introduction that this book grew out of his writing a user manual for his WinSpeakerz software (Real Audio, ...), and I have no doubt that it would be an excellent companion manual to many of the widely available louspeaker design suites on the market today.

Further, Murphy has written an extremely "readable" book, largely due to the profund paucity of mathematical formulae. For the mathematically challenged, the book is a good orientation to the overarching concepts of speaker design without an overwhelming level of quantitative detail. Also, certain oft-neglected concepts such as the importance of different spatial loadings of drivers or phase characteristics of crossovers are emphasized.

However, it is for precisely the above stated reasons that this book is NOT an introduction to the design of loudspeakers--at least, not an enabling one. A novice who read only this book would be no more able to design even a simple speaker than he would a nuclear weapon. A more honest title might be "Overview of Loudspeaker Design Principles," or even "Getting More Out of WinSpeakerz."

I Finally Understand How Loudspeakers Work!.......2002-02-16

Ever wonder why you can't make a tiny loudspeaker that has lots of bass? This book explains why a good sounding loudspeaker is a compromise between the size of the box, how loud it'll play and the amount of bass you'll get out of it. Lots of good information. Straight forward and east to follow.

It is a good reference book to understanding the basic concept of audio speaker. But it should have another version to tell more and deeper theoretical terms of speaker structure. Such as the detail of all equations relating to the technical terms Q(ts), Vas...., difference material(wood) and shape structure for speaker box. How to choose and match difference driver unit....etc

Fairly comprehensive but "Lite" overview........2005-10-24

This is a fairly comprehensive overview of loudspeakers. It's mostly a collection of information from other sources - especially JBL where the author worked - and lot of it is of interest and some of it is hard to find elsewhere. It's well worth a read by an enthusiast. But there's not much depth and it seems a bit careless. It lost a star because it had a few too many inconsistent constants, incorrect units and similar errors for it's considerable price.

This is a great book for a person who is intersted in the math and technical aspects of speaker design. I used this book as a refernce while working on my senior thesis and it proved very helpful. This is not a book for beginners.

References of that sort are seldom found. Perhaps not really suited for direct design application, it however provides extremely diverse information and insight into the different technologies for making loudspeakers and ways other components in the audio path interact with them. The bass-reflex principles and passive baffle for example are explained quite precisely and concisely. Surprisingly though, I didn't see a mention of the semi-active baffle, where a short circuited loudspeaker is used as the secondary vibrating body. The chapter on headphones however is unique. I don't know of a better presentation in a book reference format, than this one.

Symbols and nomenclature used for mathematical equations is often non-standard. The organization of information is somewhat disoriented. Often symbology is not explained. Though the information contained is plentiful and probably complete, it was difficult to discern what formulae applied to what. The book appears to have been written for one who didn't need the book to begin with.

Here we have it! One of several new books on chess tactical calculation (or planning? - kinda some of the same stuff, though not always). I will say for sure, this guy knows is stuff! With books on general tactics/pattern recognition puzzles, chess traps, and much more on the rise, you kinda need to look for thinks a little different to "get the edge". I will not say this book is better than the recent other tactics calculation book I got or chess traps books (actually opening tactics - found it very useful), but I will say it is up there!
Some totally different ideas were given in this book, that I didn't find in others, some useful, some less than useful (that is why when you read any chess book, do not ever think that the written word is always right!). But I did learn from it, and I liked it. Just one comment. I think that either the author didn't write English as his first language or it was translated - because there were obviously some grammer mistakes that sometimes effected what I think the author was trying to get across - my only complaint. Otherwise, a good book!!
