This book is a series of summaries and stories of the 30 designers Bucher talked to. It's a great book to flip through and think about. My only regret is that most of the designers' works shown in the book is reproduced at miniscule size, simply because there is so much of it to show. I think I had the wrong expectation in wanting to see lots and lots of work, but the stories of each designer is an inspiration in itself.

I love this book. There is a ton of info but writer/designer Stefan Bucher has layed it out in an eye-catching, extremely functional way and I appreciate that. The insight into the designers lives and working process is something you just won't find in another book. I find it inspiring for us wannabe designers! As an artist or designer, this is a must-read!
A very rewarding find.......2006-02-02
After much time reading books on what seems like my weakest attribute (business acumen), I decided to treat myself to a book that was focused on what I love: design. In September I stumbled upon a book by designer, Stefan Bucher, called "All Access, The Making of Thirty Extraordinary Graphic Designers."
This book was a rather fortuitous find, but it re-awakened my interest in the joy of making things. I read and reflected upon the content in it exclusively for a number of weeks. This is particularly rare for me, as I generally have about a dozen books on the go, all in varying stages of completion.
It feels as though the design community has recently experienced a deluge of monographs which take on either a hero-worshiping or somewhat self-indulgent nature. Although he's clearly excited by the people he chronicles in his book, Stefan manages to stem any kind of adulation, instead breaking his studies into small chapters. Each of these passages works to illustrate the challenges real practitioners of design have struggled with, and how they have come to find their voice through their work.
If anything was difficult for me in reading this book, it was in keeping names and bodies of work straight. The vast collection of gifted designers and their wide ranging oeuvres, felt a little like a crash course that I couldn't quite process in time. As a result, I've been re-reading the book in fits and spurts since the fall, and have referenced it extensively in discussions ever since.

A Design Book to, well, READ!.......2005-06-18
All Access is one of the most abundant, interesting design books I've had the pleasure to comb through. Most design publications are a pleasant visual trip, but All Access has not only engaged my eyes, but pulled me in to read every entertaining, inspiring word. I would recommend this book to everyone from the seasoned design professional to someone who is only remotely interested in graphic design. It could change the latter to the former....

Speaking as one who spends countless (and often fruitless) hours confined to my two-man hide in a bid to obtain a world-beating photograph of some curious bird, I think it is fair to say that you can only judge a guidebook to this particular subject by studying the photographs produced by the author. In short, there is only one word which describes the photographs in this book and that word is "Wow!"
Whether it is a picture of some obscure fungus, a large group of swans or an autumnal leaf, this author not only shows us how to do it but also shows us his own results. So if you have ever wanted to take a photograph of a bird in flight - you know, one of those pictures where you can see the details in every feather in the bird's wing, then this is the book to set you on your way.
You really will not be disappointed with this one.

Yep, Dave Barry is getting old, and the King of Humor may soon become the King Lear of Humor, but fear not, because Dave is not going quietly. Dave Barry Turns 50 is Barry at his best, mainly because it succeeds in being more than simply a collection of his newspaper columns. He examines the development of the baby boomer, from youth in the '50s ("an age so innocent that there could be a TV show featuring a main character called 'The Beaver'") to maturity in the '70s ("We ... basked in the reflected glory of Woodward and Bernstein: we were inspired by them; we kept a sharp eye out for any hint of corruption in the way our local school board purchased clarinets for the marching band"), before providing a self-help guide for those entering their second half century.
Barry could squeeze laughs out of a prostate exam (eventually he may have to, although the cover of this book proudly states that he refuses to even mention the word prostate), and Dave Barry Turns 50 provides him with ample opportunities to demonstrate the agile wit that has endeared him to millions of fans. Even in the final chapters, when he faces the inevitability of death, he manages to keep chuckling--after all, he is only 50, and this, he points out, "...is our glory time, this last decade or so before our powers decline and we start showing up for work with our pants on backwards." Wow! This book is so funny that I kept my spouse awake with my raucous laughter -- and had to put it away as soon as he fell to sleep so I didn't end up in divorce court.
After sharing a few anecdotes with him, we both started going to bed laughing hysterically as if we were back in high school!
A delightful read -- and wonderful gift for those boomers approaching their 50th birthdays.
Dave Barry's Genius.......2006-11-10
Anything by Dave Barry is genius - full of insight, uncannily funny, entertaining, and thought provoking. Dave Barry Turns 50 makes a perfect small gift for 50th birthdays (as does Dave Barry Turns 40 for those a decade younger.)
Barry has Written Better.......2006-08-19
This is one of Barry's books where he includes a lot of personal stories and like in other novels where he does this, the overall quality, entertainment and humour doesn't quite reach the high benchmark of his usual work where he just comments on the world. This book should really be called Dave Barry relives his life in the 60's and early 70's as that pretty much is all that's in this book. Even though when turning 50 Barry obviously lived must have lived through the 80's and 90's there is no commentary what so ever on these decades so if you weren't alive back in the 60's and 70's then obviously you are not going to enjoy the reminiscing factor.
An interesting look at America in the 60's and 70's but if you weren't alive back then I'd suggest better Barry non fiction books such as Boogers are My Beat and Homes and Other Black Holes. Also read Barry's fiction masterpiece Tricky Business.
A Baby Boomers wet dream..........2006-05-22
Dave Barry Turns 50 is less about turning 50 than it is a humorous recounting of growing up a Baby Boomer.
Barry chronicles all the major events, fads, trends and people who impacted the life of a typical boomer. Along the way Barry unleashes heavy doses of his wildly funny wit, recurring punch lines and he even throws in a bit of social and political commentary to boot.
If you're a Barry fan or an aging boomer then this book won't disappoint. Plenty of Barry humor to chuckle at and lots of references to stuff and events to which every boomer can relate.
However, if you're new to Barry's world then I suggest you start with one of his other works - Dave Barry Slept Here for example. It similar to Turns 50 in the way it's constructed and written, but the humor is turned up to high and the commentary is turned completely off (except when used to poke fun at something).
Though Turns 50 goes back to the fence...it's not a quite a home run.
a touch of maturity in there, too.......2004-02-13
The guy is gross, goofy, really really funny, but he's not the tenage moron he sets you up for. I read this book on my way to Japan for the first time. It was a great flight companion and every word of it turned out to be true. How he could get such insights out of so short a trip, with kids in tow amazes me, but my point here is that he handled the tough stuff--racism, pacifism...you know, the NOT FUNNY!!! stuff...with the compusure of a monk! Really. I would have read the book just for the profound insights (sorry Dave). As it happened my trip coincided with Bush's declaration of war on Iraq. Had I not read his chapter on Hiroshima, I would have been blindsided by the questions I was asked in highschool classrooms about the American attitude toward war. Intestinal fortitude or not, I vote for Dave to represent us around the globe.

Nothing New Here & Somewhat Annoying.......2006-04-07
I would recommend Patrick McGiligan's biography because it has the research and detail one would expect of a biography. This book, (I assume written by an Englishman since it was published in England and uses words like "chum",etc) is a composite of what has already been published on Jack Nicholson. Its even balanced and focuses on seminal events in Nicholoson's life and his movies..What is very annoying about this book is the excessive description of the cultural context that surrounded Jack's 60's days...Way too much setting, frankly because there is not any new content here...If you don't know much about Jack, this is not a bad introductory piece....Oh, yes the other thing about this book is way too much (previously published) information on Warren Beatty, Roman Polanski, Marlon Brando, and Robert Evans...the writer goes into great details on the problems in their lives...not central to subject of this biography...

New American Crossword Puzzel Dictionary (Revised Edition).......2007-01-19
I really happy with this book. It was just what he wanted. I gave it as a gift and he uses it every day.
An essential guide.......2005-01-17
I use this in conjunction with the Dell Crossword Dictionary and find them complimentary. It has a nice category section, especially the geography section of rivers and cities, and the suggestions for some clues (i.e. animals, flowers, fish, and stars and constellations) is more extensive than many other dictionaries. While the word clues for three and four letter words is extensive, I find it a bit awkward to use. This dictionary shows much evidence of use in my hands and is well worthwhile.
New American Crossword Puzzle Dictionary.......2003-03-10
I purchased the latest edition of the dictionary edited by Albert & Loy Morehead to replace an edition I had purchased in the 1970's. I cannot state what edition it was because the first 13 pages have been worn away by continual use. That edition was absolutely fantastic. The new edition (1986) is still good but somewhat disappointing because many "Categories" have been omitted and placed in a section named "Definitions and Answers" where they are not readily observable. For example, some of the categories I found helpful but which are no longer situated in the "Categories" section are: Anatomy and Health; Arms and Armor; Food & Drink; Lakes, Seas, Gulfs, Bays; Mountains & Volcanoes; Bridges & Dams; Natural History (many subcategories) Measures & Weights; Money & Coins; Tools & Implements; Wearing Apparel; Music Terms & Instruments; and some others. All in all, the dictionary is still great and I recommend it as a valuable addition to a puzzle solvers collection.
My Favorite Crossword Puzzle Dictionary!.......2000-05-29
Although I'm sad to see the New American Dictionary has not been revised since 1986, I am buying a new copy since I found this to be absolutely the best crossword puzzle dictionary. The cat ate the front and back pages off of my old one (my fault for leaving the catnip package to close to it!), so I guess I'll have to part with it and get a new one. It's categories section is the best and includes categories such as: The Bible, famous names, foreign words, geography, mythology, presidential information and more. It's a must to help find the answers for those last empty boxes!
