I truly adore this book. It comes in a hard case and beautifully bound edition. Author has dones extensive research on the structural and composition of these complicated and intricated Islamic patterns, providing existing examples and computer generated illustrations. You better have a fair grasp of math and geometry if you want to create these images. It is an expensive book but worthy of its price for the scholarly work. Probably the only improvement one can think of adding to this publication is a CD insert with the software that can produce the complex design and forms.

I attended a lecture by Jean-Marc at Microsoft's MOSAIC (Microsymposium on Analysis and Synthesis of Intuitively Conceived Geometrical Art). Castera's work is unique and brilliant. The book is worth it for the hundreds, maybe thousands of giant color plates of Morroccan mosaics alone, and Castera's exposition of the artistic technique and culture of North Africa is excellent.

The core of his work, though, is the mathematical analysis of mosque mosaics, and his rigorous but accessible explanation of tiling rules is fantastic. He goes all the way from how to construct a Solomon's Seal on graph paper to multi-dimensional group theory and back again. I can't say enough good things about Castera's work and this book.

Consider it an investment in a lifetime fascination.

Beautiful photographs of authentic embroidery and black and white's of 1930's Moroccan life. Very well researched. However, not a 'WOW' book.

Just not what I expected..........2001-12-05

Being excited about visiting wonderful places and buying woderful things, I have looked through several books in this series by Chronicle Books. Most were excellent, (see the one on Indonesia!) but I found this one a bit lacking. Perhaps it was my expectations.

While the other books provided a great insight into crafts of various regions at the time of publishing, this book of Moroccan crafts spent a lot of time speaking about history. The textiles section was very thorough, but other sections (such as metalwork) were brief at best. The photos throughout the book were mainly of antique crafts, and look like they were taken at museums.

That said, this may be nice for the amateur collector to cruise through, but if you're looking for a book to read to gain some insight into what you can find and purchase today, you may find yourself as disappointed as I was. You may be better off with a Fodors guide or some other such book.

Find a laugh at the place that you need it.......2006-01-24

Georgie Jessel would have loved this book. He was endlessly talking of the 'Friar's Club' in his old routines. But the truth is this book has quite a bit of material which comes from other sources. Never mind. There are jokes here for every situation and every occasion. The one- liners are conveniently indexed under subject making it easy to decide to be amused about something and finding a particular subject.
This is of course a book not to be ' read through' but rather dipped into here and there when one feels like a little chuckle or smile. There is however some bad taste dirty stuff which a number of readers have complained about, and which the editor might have done without. Of course in doing so he would have taken out one major element of 'Friar's Club ' humor.
Usually I find something disheartening about joke- books especially if they are too 'low in spirit'. I prefer a kind of mild humor as exemplified by this kind of joke.

The work is not all jokes and has little stories and anecdotes also.

Ladies and Germs............2003-08-19

If you have ever seen the Friar's Club in action, you already know that there is no safe haven from the one liners, roasts and put-downs. "The Friar's Club Encyclopedia of Jokes is no different. The book has over 2,000 jokes listed by subject from A-W, so unless you are a xenophobe, a yak, or a zebra, any person,idea, or subject is fair game.

This is not a book that you would read from cover to cover, Just leave it out on your coffee table, or pull it out from the bookshelves, open up to any page and start laughing. The only place I would not suggest to keep it,is on your night stand. You may wake the person next to you laughing out loud.

All the one liners and gags are grouped by subject. Actors, Baldness, Bankers, Divorce,Ethnic Jokes, Female Anatomy,Life, Politics,Television, Taxes, Weather, you name it, these big guns of comedy don't miss a trick.

This book may not be for everyone, as many of the jokes are crude,some may be considered R rated, and some being from a time when it was okay to laugh at yourself and life without being politically correct. Although none of the lines are intended to be mean spirited. I definately wouldn't keep it around children who can read!

You can almost hear, these legends spouting their stuff. Groucho Marx.."A hospital bed is a parked taxi with the meter running"...Mae West.."I like two kinds of men: domestic and foreign"...Jackie Gleason.."When you leave New York, you're camping out." Joe E. Lewis.."A man is never drunk if he can lay on the floor without holding on" (Those are some of the more tasteful quotes I could give without being edited or offending.)

It is quite a thick book at 496 pages of these priceless quotes and dialouges. There is an index of Humorists, making it easy to find your favorites, and an introduction by Alan King, listing it's most renowned memebers.

Many of the contributors(who some may consider as national treasures) are no longer with us, and this book is a treasure chest of their words. I would recommend it to anyone who needs a good laugh and can appreciate it for what it is.

Direct from the *true* Kings of Comedy, the Joke Enclopedia!.......2002-01-29

I love this great big joke book! I got it for Christmas, and each night before turning out the light, I'd read sections of it, and really enjoy it. To tell the absolute truth, I was *very* suprised to find MANY of the jokes from my collection of "Gross" and "Truly Tasteless" books included here, albiet in slightly altered form. I suppose there's a place in the Friar's hearts for occasional filth and rauch. But you know what? I still love it! Hey, I said I was suprised, I didn't say I didn't approve. More power to 'em, so much the better, I say. Ranging in topics from Drugs, Sex, Work, Women, Doctors, Lawyers, (a rather BIG section there) and yes, even the ethnic jokes, I guarantee you'll find the catagory in here to suit your taste, and then you'll find the perfect joke to make you split your sides! Check this one out today!

SUPER for speechmakers, comedians and BIIIIIIIG LAUGHS!.......2001-09-11

Even with Milton Berle's amazing, thick-with-laughs two volume Private Joke Files this is one of the best joke books on the market. Why? It truly contains great one-liners, straight lines, gags, roasts, etc. from the Friars Club, many of them attributed to the world's greatest entertainers and comedians.

Don't give this to Little Johnny (although he may indeed like it) since some jokes in this superb book are adult oriented (with adult language, too) and - yes -- some are politically incorrect ("She's so fat she's my TWO best friends." -- unattributed). But you'll howl with laughter as you read many of these.

And you can truly use them for any occasion or aim one at someone if you know his/her/its background ("You have to have a physical before you get into the Army. A doctor looks in one ear, another doctor looks in the other, and if they can't see each other you're in. If they can see each other, you become an MP." -- Joe E Brown). Some jokes aren't attributed but you'll find many jokes directly credited to classic and modern comedians ... EVEN BETTER: It is well-organized into topics and indexed according to performer. I read a lot of joke books. Some I read, find mildly amusing and file in the basement. This one stays on my self for reference (I am a ventriloquist believe it or not) -- and if I just need a pick-me-up belly laugh. WELL worth the price!!

If you are an actor, regardless of how many other 'how to' books you've got on your book shelf, this is a book that you NEED. It's well written, to the point, and Bonnie "gets" it. This book literally changed my approach to my acting career. It is so chock full of great advice and insider information that you would be doing yourself a disservice if you didn't read it right now!

Self-Management is THE BEST book out there teaching you step-by-step the ins and outs of selling yourself as an actor. Bonnie Gillespie makes Hollywood (and other markets) accessible for not only newbie actors, but for veterans of the industry as well.

It covers most parts of the game (conventions, hand playing, defence...), but i found it rather old. Point count is oldfashioned, and that is enough to ruin your buying system... You will find enough useful clues though. Not bad.

Dated but Still Valuable.......2004-05-30

When Goren said "complete," he meant it. Between the covers of this book, one will find everything one must know to learn the game and play it competently. For many bridge players, this single volume, can be a complete bridge library. The sections on declarer play and defensive play will be as good 100 years from now as they were the day Goren wrote them.

BUT

One could have questioned "new" on the original publication date. Especially for duplicate players, even the Laws of Contract Bridge have changed. More practically, bidding has evolved quite rapidly since Goren wrote this work, and the bidding ideas he presents were tried and true (that is, shop worn) before publication.

If you are serious about the game, augment Goren with more modern works about bidding. Marty Bergen and Marshal Miles stand tall among those who will show you modern bidding methods at the leading edge. Still, if you can find more useful, well presented, effectively indexed information about the game in any other volume, buy it and clue me in on the treasure.

The Granddaddy.......2003-03-07

Charles Goren explains basic bridge with clarity like no other. An added bonus is Charley has a sense of humor so you get an occasional smile along with your lessons.

Your first lesson in bridge is "Don't run until you can walk!" How many people have you heard say something like, "maybe I don't know much about bidding, but give me a good hand, and I can play against anybody!" Don't you believe it! Submarine squeezes, dummy reversals, double throw in end plays are very exciting stuff, but 1) they don't come up all that often and 2) you have to visualize all four hands before they work.

Goren starts you out on Chapter I with "The Bidding" just like you would at the table. Each chapter ends with a quiz. Take them and then go back and reread the areas you missed. Until you feel very comfortable with all aspects of bidding, don't go any further. You will never get to play that brilliant hand if you land in the wrong spot. That's what bidding is all about, to get you to that perfect spot where you get a chance to shine and slay your opponents.

When I learned to play bridge as a teenager, Goren's Bridge Complete was my Bible. It has gone through many revisions since, but looking over the latest, I see it still retains all its virtues. I'm not denying this book will take a lot of time, and everything must be read more than once best with a paper and pencil close by, but you will be rewarded. The pleasure you will get from deftly executed bidding and play is ample compensation for the time you have spent. Read and enjoy. I'll see you at the bridge table!

A firm foundation and great book.......2001-01-19

When first learning bridge almost a decade ago, I had Sheinwold's classic book (Five Weeks to Winning Bridge) and this one. This book was by and far the better; furthermore, it has remained a book that is constantly re-readable. Each time through I pick up another fascet of the game from Goren and his editors (since he died).

The bidding system used is what is commonly known as a "two over one game force" which, in my opinion, is a very powerful system. It does take a little bit more study than a purely natural system, but not much.

Although I well recommend this book for any serious beginner, even a complete beginner, my wife found the "Bridge for Dummies" (Eddie Kantar) book more accessible. Of course, she was only learning Bridge because I asked her to play with me... After all, what good is a wife if not a permanent Bridge partner? In any event, I highly recommend the Kantar work as well.

A final word: despite the book's age, it is not at all dated.

A great addition to your Bridge Game!.......2000-05-11

I bought this book after I got Contract Bridge for Beginners... This book should be on the shelf of any bridge player! It's not the best book for beginners, but it could be used by a beginner as well as an advanced player. If you are a beginner, you should buy Goren's Contract Bridge for Beginners. It's short and to the point. Bridge Complete expands on many of the items in the beginner's book and offers many new items.
