Great text, but in this printing the illustrations appear poorly printed (they are pale), especially noticeable when compared with those of an older edition. Perhaps the quality of illustrations is peculiar to my copy, but the reproductions seem consistently light.

When asked to recommend an art book, I frequently compare art books to chemistry books or math books. These books usually assume you understand, at the minimum, the symbol for salt or the math equation to measure an area. For this book, it would help if you are familiar with the main phases of representational styles in art. For this is not a picture book, but rather reading material with explanatory pictures on the psychology of perception.
But, Dr. Gombrich wrote for the general public and nobody does it better. Having read all his books more than once, he takes you by the hand, leads you down his primrose path, and entices you by way of his poetic language; much like walking in a garden with a gardener. You may not know all the plant's latin names, but the experience is rewarding.

As someone with an interest in art I found this book very interesting.
However, this book is also a classic example of how a non-fiction book should be written. It flows smoothly from topic to topic, is not written on too high a level, but on the other hand does not insult your intelligence.
His other book are also very good.

This book explores the seduction of graphic design in the style of the compelling dutch.We see the early influences and torments Amercan design took from Denmark.Mr. Purvis goes well into the origins of the illustration found considered a trademark back in the beginning of the 17th century.It is evident that the author studied with riled intensity, pursuing the virile truth in the essence of design.

I enjoy books about ghosts--they are a nice change of pace for a person like me who does engineering for a living. "Coast to Coast Ghosts" ranks among my very favorites. It's not just that the writing style is terrific, although of course it is. It's also that the author has a nice, low key approach to the subject that doesn't artificially sensationalize for the sake of story. That kind of honest, yet masterfully authorial approach is very difficult to find. Between the author's evocative pictures, easygoing dialogue, and calm gumption in the face of some pretty unusual goings on, I felt I was just tagging along with a friend who is exploring all the places *I* would like to explore, but am too much of a wuss to come anywhere near. I also appreciated how Ms. Rule didn't hesitate to share her doubts about fishy stories with us. After many a hoax like the Amityville horror--well, Ms. Rule's books are a treat.

She sheds new light on the relationship between the fictional Kane and the character upon which he is based, legendary newspaper tycoon William Randolph Hearst. Mulvey is especially sensitive to the way Citizen Kane--and Hearst--negotiated liberal and conservative politics; for her, Kane's psyche mirrors the political unconscious of the United States in the early 1940s. The appendix reprints a press statement by Welles himself in which he describes his reasons for making the film.

This book has laid a fundation for understanding the film from a psychoanalytic perspective. The author re-examined the visual style of the film, its narrative structure, the historical context during production and the director's political activities, discovered new facts and finally came to an interpretation in psychoanalytic terms in which all the clues would fall into places. Although some of the arguments were not given in full length and rigidness (there are only 87 pages), this book certainly built a new system of meanings regarding the film that includes many facts discovered in the past several decades.

This is an example of what the BFI classics should hope to attain for each of their forthcoming books.
A great insight into the film and the events surrounding it. Praise, I suppose, is due to the fact that there was so much that went on around the making of this film that it would be hard to write a bad book about it.
Feminist analysis of "Citizen Kane".......1998-05-13
Laura Mulvey writes well, and her analysis of "Citizen Kane" is, in several aspects, a joy to read. But, for an in-depth coverage of the subject, I really recommend Ronald Gottesman's "Focus on Citizen Kane", or, better yet, his "Perspectives on Citizen Kane", which I think should be required reading on the film, along with Carringer's "The Making of Citizen Kane". In other words, if you needed to read just one book on the subject, this one would not be it.

Carringer's exhaustive tome on the making of Orson Welles' signature film covers all the bases: from its rocky road to inception (covering Welles' fascinating attempt to adapt Conrad's HEART OF DARKNESS into a movie) to every conceivable aspect of the production and post-production. This is required reading for any Welles fan and an invaluable tool for anybody who has to write an essay on CITIZEN KANE.
Carringer's writing style is engaging and eloquent without being too academic. He doesn't bombard the reader with a million esoteric film terms but instead instills his prose with an infectious passion for his subject. Reading this book will make you want to re-discover KANE all over again -- which is what a good film book should do!
This is a great companion book with the awesome two-DVD set of KANE that was release a little while ago.

This book explores the idea of nihilism, emphasized by German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche, through its appearance in modern popular culture. The author defines and reflects upon nihilism, then explores its manifestation in films and television shows.
Among the subjects examined are the award-winning television series The Sopranos and the film noir genre that preceded and influenced it. Films probed include Orson Welles's masterpiece Citizen Kane, the films of Stanley Kubrick, Neil Jordan's controversial The Crying Game and Richard Linklater's unconventional Waking Life.
Finally, the author considers nihilism in terms of the decay of traditional values in the genre of westerns, mostly through works of filmmaker John Ford. Joseph W. Daniele has written several books on historical reproduction woodworking. As a former editor for Early American Life, you have to believe he knows the subject matter. He does, in fact each design, no matter how simple or complex, has a history. Ask yourself, do I just want to make a clock or do I want to make a historical reproduction? Funny, some people buy a book without knowing what it involves and then write a crappy review, as if their ignorance is the author's fault.

I loved this book! Includes a brief history of each design, wide range of plans, from the simple plaque type clock to more complex cabinets. Easily followed directions,detailed drawings, and most importantly - construction can be done with tools from the average home workshop. PS If this isn't what you are looking for, don't blame the author!

I bought this book based on the title, which for me was a mistake. I was expecting drawing and guidance on making reproductions of time honored classics. While it is helpful it lacks the details about the originals that are needed to built future classics.

Maybe I'm crazy, but I've always considered a clock to be the inner workings - springs, pendulums, and such. This book doesn't tell you how to build those - it is merely a woodworking book that talks about the design of the cabinets that house clocks. Not for a horologist.

I have this book and was looking for other books by Mr. Daniele since I had him as a teacher years ago at Ludlow. One of the best classes I've ever taken. He is a master craftsman with wood and metal, and certainly respected and admired the colonial period. He conveyed this respect to his classes,and through his books, I am able to convey it to my sons. The drawings and instructions are clear and easily used by all levels of woodworker. Lots of photos of finished peices. Ideal for the home hobbiest.
