Fantastic plates from original portfolios with examples of 1.......2002-01-25
It is difficult to find an original porfolio full of plates illustrating the work of the French "ferroniers" in the twenties. This inexpensive booklet lets one admire these marvelous and rare examples, many of which no longer exist.
Art Deco Ornamental Ironwork.......2000-04-01
This book is a collection of 670 illustrations. No text is included with the illustrations, but could be a good resource for someone interested in seeing the various types of design used in what was mainly cast iron. The books groups the ironwork into handrails, window balconies, railings. banisters, drapery screens and door panels etc. For someone looking for a copyright free set of graphics this would be a good choice. For those interested in finding out how this ironwork was made and by who it would be a bad choice. These is no explanation of who, when or how in this book - just a collection of detailed illustrations.
Book Description
Who can resist the magic of beautiful wrought ironwork? What artists in iron have wrought over the centuries in ornaments and decorations is shown in this book through hundreds of captivating photographs. Thorough attention is paid to the restoration of wrought iron through discussions of techniques and various materials. The ironwork examples are organized according to the uses of ironwork, such as gratings that protect doors and windows, entries and gates from Europe in the Middle Ages, through the artistic creations of the 17th and 18th centuries up to works of our own day. Balconies and stairways, arbors, fencing, and church gratings provide exceptional opportunities for beautiful wrought iron artistry. Look and learn, and be inspired.

Customer Reviews:
One of very few books on cast iron collectibles.......2006-11-27
A useful book because it covers both doorstops *and* doorknockers, bookends, banks and other cast iron ephemera. The photographs are dark and the pricing is out of date, but there are very few books on cast iron collectibles, making this a valuable addition.
Book Description

makes a good, quick point.......2007-06-27
My only complaint is that I think the price is high for a book that can be read in an afternoon. The story, however, is very interesting. You can even get a little excited reading this book but, no, it will not be the same as rollercoaster rides in Harry Potter.
This book makes a good point and in a very good way. You can't read this book and feel the same about change. You will look at change differently and be able to handle it better.
Awesome Book.......2007-05-23
This book was very funny while revealing to you the mindset of greedy corporate executives.
The Real Corporate Story.......2004-01-27
Although this book is a parody, it provides more insight into the corporate world than Who Moved My Cheese. It presents the reality of the work environment from the low level workers' point of view. It seems especially relevant with Enron and Arthur Anderson and Martha Stewart and everything else that is going on. Take an hour. Read it. Have a good laugh.
Laughing all the way to the bank............2002-11-22
I cherished "Who Moved by Cheese?" -- the cheesy story about change, business and life-in-general. Even more than Johnson's book, I love Hochberg's parody, "Who Stole My Cheese?"
Talk about appropriate for the time... From Florida's elections to Enron, WorldCom and Martha Stewart, Hochberg makes us laugh as well as provokes us to take a long, hard look at ourselves, our society and what is or is not flourishing. This book is noteworthy, and should be read by everyone!
It is a remarkable gift - both the book and its message.
Where are you moving next, Hochberg, as I need another good laugh?

incomplete but good read.......2006-07-05
David Gardner can write, and he does express the anguish in Hanks' life and the good times well - he misses out some of the extra-film things Hanks does - not only his choices of charity work, but his comic work on Saturday Night Live which should fill out the career of this rounded entertainer - he leaves out earlier films that i discovered elsewhere. so, if he is marking out the territory to be the only biographer who knows it all, he should include more of the career. (Why did he and first wife adopt when they had a son already? what is it about Hanks and his wife that lead them to do this? but none of that is mentioned.) Maybe he was blocked, but he has not been a good journalist in doing what is essentially a cut-and-paste job that is very selective. Hanks' brilliance as an entertainer is of a particular American brand, and, here i am, an American based in Europe, and I'd like to have read about that a little. so, this is disappointing finally.
A Fascinating Look at a Wonderful Actor.......2000-05-15
I began reading this informative biography, thinking it was probably just the typical filmography most books done on Tom Hanks are. The author has done a tremendous amount of research and, although I thought I was a well-informed fan, learned quite a few revelations. Anyone who loves Tom Hanks will be thrilled with this book and those who are only curious will also enjoy it.

Great easy piano collection.......2006-08-26
There are many easy piano Christmas/holiday books out there today...but none are as good as this one. Why, you ask? Well, for one, there is the name Bill Boyd. If you are not familiar with this name, shame on you. Mr. Boyd does amazing things with very few notes. His easy piano arrangements are some of the most full, complex sounding arrangements around. The other reason why this book is a must have, the hlidays come once a year, I only play about, oh, once a year. So, even though I can read fairly well, I just do not practice like I should (now shame on me) and the easy piano arrangements are perfect for people like me.
Get it and have a great holiday!

Nice little music b ook.......2007-02-06
This is a great little book for beginning pianists--not real easy, but not real hard either. I'm 60 years old and have been taking lessons for about a year now and I had no trouble with the songs although they did challenge me a bit here and there. Also, who could not be inspired by a book with the Peanuts characters on the cover and inside as well!

Customer Reviews:
Clear and concise.......2007-04-27
This is a clear and concise (59 pages) overview of Gin Rummy with excellent advice on general play and strategy. Compared to Fraed's book on Gin Rummy, this was an absolute pleasure to read and although it is short, it packs in far more useful information than many larger books do. I'm no Gin master (yet), but i am a professional writer and I can tell you that this book is worth buying.
Good book for gin beginners.......2006-02-01
This is a good book for gin beginners. Probably, the first book you should read on gin.
Good beginner book.......2005-09-16
Good intro to gin, but not enough in-depth material. Good for anyone new to the game.
A great buy for any player.......2005-04-26
This book is great for the beginner or the intermediate player of any experience level. The rules are clearly explained; even if you have not played before you can learn easily. It offers great strategy that's easy to understand. Although not a lengthy book, it sure is a helpful one. It has helped me improve my game, and it can do the same for you.
Best of those I've read.......1999-12-01
More of a booklet than a book - only 59 pages - but it's the most cogent of the lot. I can't speak about the Killebrew book, which has had many positive reviews - but I've read the rest, and this is the best.
Customer Reviews:
Rambling and incoherant.......2007-04-27
It doesn't matter how good at something someone is, if they don't write well a book by them will be substandard. This is the case here. The book is rambling and incoherant, and by the end i was more confused than enlightened regarding Gin strategy. It's written more like a biography than a book on game strategy and it's not a particularly interesting biography anyway. Don't buy this book. Get Sam Fry's instead: it is less than half the size but teaches you more than twice as much about Gin Rummy!
Would have given 3.5 if I could have.......2006-09-07
I need to start by saying I am at best a beginning player. However, the game I was taught by 3 different people as gin rummy is somewhat different than the game described in this book and not a variation listed in the back. Therefore, I have evaluated this book from the eyes of someone who has not really played "classic gin rummy".
I thought the book deserved more than 3 stars as "ok" but hated to say I really "liked" it. I found the author interesting in his anecdotal style but found it hard to learn from as a beginner. I would have appreciated a bit more discussion at the beginning about the basics of the game and the two ways to win a game and more examples of scoring. He gives lots of examples elsewhere and it would have made a couple things clearer for me since my questions were not answered in the basic text.
I got the book to learn a bit of strategy to beat my card playing brother-in-law. Since I was taught to play with fewer cards and often with more than one person but not with a partner, the playing strategies were not as applicable for the game we play but I did learn a bit. I am sure with more play I will come to understand some of the concepts better.
What I will say for the book is that it made me want to learn the classic game of gin rummy. I had not realized it was even played for money or that there are tournaments in places like Las Vegas or Reno. I thought it was the stuff of movies, southern gentlemen in white suits with mustaches and country clubs. I think that after I play the classic game I will come to realize the value of this book and find that it definitely qualifies for that 4th star.
Good Tips for Partnership Gin, .......2006-02-08
The author provides good tips for partnership gin. However, his analysis of regular gin is best suited for beginners only. There are better books for singles players.
This is a tremendous book.......2004-04-08
I would like to disagree with the reviewer who said "poor author and teacher." Fraed doesn't give simple formulas or easy answers. That's good, because gin rummy is not that simple! But the answers are there, hiding in Fraed's examples and discussion. You have to work at gin over the table, and you should expect to work at reading a text on it.
I think I found one little mistake on page 92, but that's nitpicking. ;)
People interested in this book should also read the review by ckill2015 of Gin Rummy at its best -- which is basically the same book. C Killebrew had one of the most incredible records of all time playing gin on the internet and in real life.
Good player, poor author and teacher.......2000-09-01
This book is almost totally useless in teaching gin rummy to a relatively new player. It utilizes primarily an anecdotal approach using exclusively examples from games in which the author has played. While this may be interesting to the author's friends and competitors, it is of little or no interest to a member of the general public. Do not waste your time with this book unless you know the author.
Customer Reviews:
Worth every penny.......2006-02-01
This is a book by a winner of a gin tournament in Las Vegas in 1958. Mr. Wander takes you step by step to how he would play a game to 200 using Oklahoma rules and his random card hands. He definitely plays the hands a little different than most people on certain types of hands. I would suggest this and Jacoby Gin Rummy All American Roundup as must reads for every gin player. This is the same book as the hardback by Wander titled Expert Guide to Winning at Gin which was published in 1965. This is the paperback reprint from 1974.
