Best beginner and refresher publication printed ever........2006-07-18
I'd give Pams book 6 stars but the selection box wouldn't let me. Pam's book is an excellent step by step, add on, and expand upon set of exercises. She goes into detail on explaining how to with everything, from layout, how to draw all of the designs in her book; how to hold your knife in the basic positions and each lesson builds upon the last. Every progression is done step by step. She is outstanding in holding your hand and guiding you through all of the steps of the exercises. Wayne Barton's books are excellent. Unfortunately, you have to have some basic knowledge on design and technique and carving expertise. For experienced chip carvers his books are really great source books. His video is excellent for seeing chip carving technique at it's very best. Worth the purchase. Most important of all is using razor sharp knives else you'll be very frustrated and disappointed in the results. Get Wayne Barton's ceramic stones and a good leather strop with some rouge to rub on. Your blade will have a mirror finish.I glued some old pieces of leather to both sides of a 10 inch by 2 inch wide by 1/4 inch thick piece of wood. One side for rouging, the other to polish. When I've layed off for quite a while, I always pick up Pam's book to get my hands and fingers in shape and go through the basics. At 75, my fingers tend to stiffen up a bit. She got me my first blue ribbon at a craft show for my chip carving designed tool box back in 1993. Pam is not very good with computers but she is in a class by herself when she designed this truly outstanding do it yourself chip carving text.

Best book for beginners.......2005-08-22
I am a newbie to chip carving - and have purchased 2 Wayne Barton books to get started. They had great pictures as inspiration - but do nothing for the beginner who has no technique to make these sophisticated cuts.
This book reminds me of learning to play the piano. You start with basics like chop sticks and gradually learn to add parts til you're playing beautiful music. It starts with basic exercises and real projects with basics and expands gradually with each chapter - expanding on the basic cut toward more difficult cuts. i.e. cutting simple triangle - to more complex straight patterns / to curves - and projects to tie them all together. It also covers basics like creating and laying out a pattern onto a piece of wood - which isn't mentioned in my Barton books.
I'd highly recommend this for the beginner or anyone who finds themselves questioning basics of technique for various cuts.

Absolutely magnificent.......2005-05-30
I cannot give this book enough stars, and it is worth 5 times the price they are asking for.
This is a large book, A4 sized, it is packed with useful photos and diagrams, approx. half the photos are glorious colour, essential for carving (to get a good idea of the depth and form).
Chip carving has always been a bit of a mystery to me, within 2 minutes of opening this book it was completely clear what the diagrams meant (I did not realise they were indicating depth of cut) ... the book is a series of projects, each of which builds upon your skill and grows more complex, covering all aspects of chip carving.
I cannot imagine a book on chip carving being better than this. If you are looking for one, get this one, and good luck.
Best chip carving "how-to" out there.......2005-01-02
I have several of Wayne Barton's books on chip carving. Although nicely done they pale in comparison to Pam Greshams works. Although she does not claim to be a trained teacher this lady does it better than anyone else out there. She will have you carving the basic chip in about 30 minutes. And best yet, she explains each movement and how to do it clearly and with great aids.
I can't say enough good things about this book. I only wish there was a companion video to go with it. If you are interested in chip carving don't be afraid to buy this book. It's worth every penny.
Want to learn chip carving? You gotta look at this book........2001-04-05
Never chip carved in my life. This book gives anybody a chance. Tons of pictures that illustrate everthing the author is explaining. My first thought was that Pam Gresham was one those "once in a lifetime teachers" BEFORE she started carving. That not being the case she has a gift in both teaching and carving. According to her credits she has earned numerous awards.
Highly recommended

So, you want to be Canadian? Who doesn't these days? Canucks are enjoying a major renaissance in attention, from their enlightened social policies to their wild and wooly pop culture. This playful, trivia-packed book is a long-overdue celebration of all things Canadian, from the mysteries of "eh?" to the difference between an Ogo Pogo and a Windingo to how to prepare moose stroganoff (mmm!). Featuring a dreamy list of Canadian hotties, a toe-tapping roundup of Canadian smash hit songs, a handy Canadian American translator, and pointers on how to eat, dress, and apologize like a Canadian if you weren't lucky enough to be born a Canuck, So, You Want to Be Canadian demonstrates once and for all why Canada is so cool (formerly just cold).

Good book but too short.......2007-01-18
I am really interested in exploring the option to live in Canada - that's why I purchased this book in the first place. The book references to life in Canada in a humourous manner and is practically intented to familiarize Americans with the Canadian facon de vivre.. It was a fast and fun read though I wished it had more information on everyday Canadian life basics and differences between cities like Toronto, Montreal and Ottawa.
cute but a little light on content.......2006-07-05
If you're looking for a humorous quick read this book will suffice. However, its not going to make you go "yep that's me" or "I recognize that" as much as others of the genre might
Enjoyed reading it........2006-01-03
This is a most interesting read, mostly comedic, but it is really a hoot to read.
Cute and funny for the Canada lover.......2005-09-12
This book has a wealth of quirky Canada facts and is overall an enjoyable read. A true Canadian would probally know most of the information in this volume, so this makes a great gift for that Canadian wannabe you know (or your friend the draft dodger.) Quirky and cute, I would buy this book for anyone who ever said "So what's up with Canada anyway?" This will difinitively answer their question.
A CANADIAN.......2005-05-06
I have to say that I absolutely loved this book! Not only is it very funny, its also informative for Americans who know little/nothing about Canada and gives a humorous sterotypical view of Canada. I have to say that if you were canadian you might find this funnier than americans because you know all the stereotypes and understand things like Poutine (fries with cheese), toques(hats) and the word "eh". There is many cute little diagrams throughout the book, and would be a perfect gift for an american friend, or give a canadian living in united states a good laugh. Definately worth buying!

Customer Reviews:
Educational and fun to read. Really........2007-01-04
OK. This is just a good book. Mr. Steiff, (I use "mister" because I know it makes him feel old) knows his stuff and he does a superb, (SOOPERB) job of getting that stuff across to the reader. (If you've ever read any of his movie reviews you will find this book just as entertaining.) He has a way with words he has. I'll never be a filmmaker. But I can now carry on a conversation with one. Maybe my home movies will be less boring in the future. This book ought to be required reading for all media students everywhere.
great reference.......2006-07-27
For those with even the most remote interest in filmmaking or how it works, this is a great book to read. You can learn the basics of things behind the scenes of making your favorite movies, without necessarily having to be a filmmaker yourself.
Invaluable.......2005-12-20
Joe Steiff is an accomplished and highly-regarded filmmaker, a respected educator, a
talented writer and much else. All his talents and experiences are put to use in this concise, practical and endlessly interesting book. Every facet of independent filmmaking is covered with clarity and excellent advice. But the book goes way beyond the basics into areas such as professionalism, ethics, teamwork and treating people with consideration. Even if you have never considered making a film you can learn a lot from this book about planning, organization, creativity and focus in any field.
Book Description

Also includes Nocturne (1892), Piece pour piano (1903–4), Images, Book II (1907), Hommage a Haydn (1910), The Little Nigar (1909), La plus que lente (1910), Elegie (1915), more.
Customer Reviews:
Great Edition for the Price.......2006-04-24
This edition includes a lot of great Debussy music, including La Plus que Lente, Children's Corner, and the Etudes. The book is worth it for the Etudes alone, which were written towards the end of Debussy's life and which are simply amazing. They are as masterful as Chopin's etudes, in my opinion. I recommend buying both this and the other Dover edition of Debussy piano music to have basically (or actually, but I haven't checked to be absolutely sure) everything that Debussy wrote for solo piano.
Some of Debussy's best music.......2003-05-20
For years, due to copywrite issues, "The Children's Corner" suite was only available in a French edition. Now it's here, in an affordale Dover edition, along with some rarer piano solos.
"Children's Corner" ranges from playable ("Dr. Gradus ad Parnassum" and "The Little Shepherd" and "Doll's Lullaby" to the evilly tricky "Snow is Dancing" made famous by Tomita in an electronic version. The suite was written for Debussy's daughter and is utterly charming and really fun to play. The etude's from Book II are incomplete here, but have some of the nices works, along with a beautiful berceuse.
If you play piano and love the Impressionist composers, this is a must-have.

what a binding.............2005-01-21
I'm studying music at university in hamilton ontario..
at the H.B.A level
well here is my opinion on this score....
the binding on this edition is lousy
it is simply glued in... and the glue is very cheap and the pages fall right out...
i had to spend an additional $10 to get the book put into a spiral binding..
it's not worth it... dover editions have sewn in bindings...
the selections in this edition are good, but it is close enough urtext so you're definitely on your own when it comes to fingering the right notes... especially the pieces like passapied.
the notation is an accurate size but dover is better since it is easier to read at the keyboard...
also dover editions usually are reprints of better more longlasting editions that have excellent points for page turning from my personal performing perspective, don't buy this get the dover......
it's cheaper and better....... i wish i knew about dover editions before i bought this... p.s. if you enjoy music and theoretical topics i highly recommend [...]

Book Description
This history of public television over the last twenty years shows how powerful political actors and the budget process in the United States have severely restricted the strategic behavior and programming of public TV. This hard-hitting story fills a real void in the literature on the subject and should be required reading for station managers, broadcasters, students and professionals in communications, and public policymakers. The ancillary text with its analysis of organizations theory and models is intended also for undergraduate and graduate students in mass media and communications, public policy, and organizational behavior. This practical analysis of public television funding, organization, and programming opens with an overview of organizations theory and a discussion of two models of organizational behavior. A brief history of public TV policy follows with a description of critical developments under the last four American presidents. The legislative history of the Corporation of Public Broadcasting demonstrates the effects of the budgetary process in TV programming, employment diversity, and services to different audiences. The case study closes with an evaluation of public television in terms of organizational strengths and weaknesses and offers practical suggestions for reform.
