Book Description
Literature, clothes, art, travel, decor, theatre, humor, comment, and entertainment...count on FLAIR to bring men and women of taste everywhere a new kind of magazine excitement.
Fifty years after it ceased publication, Flair is still one of the most talked-about and influential magazines ever created. It is remembered for its innovative design and production quality, its superb coverage of the arts, and its intuitive discovery of many artists and writers well before they achieved fame and fortune.
The Best of Flair is beautifully illustrated in full color and produced with all the innovative features of the magazine, including the best pieces from the original twelve issues and a selection of the famous die-cut covers, foldouts, and self-contained booklets. In print once again, The Best of Flair is a cultural event not to be missed.

Fleur's flight of fancy........2002-07-14
These facsimile pages from the twelve issues of Flair are a celebration of Fleur Cowles zest for creativity in the arts. The 338 pages must have been a challenge for the Hong Kong printers, they had to cope with various foldout pages, die-cut holes, different paper stock and bind in several short pages, two concertina foldouts and five sixteen page booklets.
Sumptuous though the book is I feel that Flair is resting in its reputation. To my mind, having worked as a publication art director, the photos, typography and layouts are very conservative and do not show any particular innovative design. Other magazines and designers were much more creative in the fifties, 'Fortune' with Will Burtin, 'Glamour' with Cipe Pineless, 'Harper's Bazaar' with Alexey Brodovitch and 'Vogue' with Alexander Liberman. Certainly the covers with their die-cut holes (sadly only six of the twelve are included) and the bound in booklets were unique to consumer magazines at the time but I think that Flair should be remembered as a magazine concept rather than a magazine full of creativity.
Fleur Cowles writes a short piece about the origins of Flair (handwritten in gold on dark blue paper) but does not give enough detail (I believe each issue involved several printers and binders) and as there were only twelve issues a list of all the articles should have been included. Another reviewer has commented that the high price (reassuringly expensive?) and the cloth covered box the book comes in reflects snob appeal, I agree but I'm still pleased to have a copy.
The return of Flair.......2001-09-11
I first became acquainted with Fleur Cowles' revolutionary 'Flair' magazine during my childhood in the fifties. At that time the publication impressed me with its cultured blend of cosmopolitan sophistication and innovative design, although it didn't escape me that its pages also included a great deal of elitism, snobbery and self-congratulatory arrogance. Although I wasn't fortunate to keep any of the original issues, the magazine became a significant influence in the development of my literary and artistic tastes and in my life-long quest for beauty and elegance. For that I was grateful. So it was a joy to learn that a best-of compilation put together by Fleur Cowles herself had finally appeared. The original 1996 printing sold out before I could manage to acquire a copy and when Rizzoli recently published a second run I quickly got one. This edition has a foreword by writer-socialite Dominick Dunne. Now, is it really worth the rather steep price of [price]? Well... I think that for that kind of money the publishers could have managed to provide us with something much more substantial, for example: a slipcased set containing facsimile editions of all twelve original issues, rather than this comprehensive but ultimately limited look. A complete reprint would have given us the full impression of the range and period feel of a unique magazine, and at this price I think that they could have well afforded to do it. I understand that part of the reason for this expensive price tag is the snob appeal that has always been a part of the Flair mystique and that perhaps this offering is to be regarded as literary caviar for the more discerning (and well-off) among us. On the plus side I must say that the large-format book is lavishly printed, that the articles are indeed very well selected - containing not quite all but much of the best of the short-lived magazine - and that the presentation is very handsome indeed. Several of the covers are reproduced with their distinctive die-cuts and embossing and the book is housed in an elegant cloth-covered box. I still think it could have been more reasonably priced but there it is. Caviar lovers, enjoy it before it disappears again!
Grab it!.......2000-04-06
Get this book. Do anything you have to in order to own it. I paid $250 at the Art Institute of Chicago because I was afraid I would miss out...again. This is a collector's piece if you got the first edition. If not, don't hesitate. It is interesting, intriging, thought provoking, ahead of it's time....and not just for 'creative' types. Something good for everyone.
dazzling!.......1999-10-21
This is the most extraordinary book I've ever owned! I missed out when it was first published as a limited edition and I vowed that if it ever came back,I would grab one. Bravo to Rizzoli Publishers for re-issuing this hard-to-find classic!

Wedding Planning For REAL People.......2001-12-29
FINALLY! A book that doesn't assume I work as a designer for Martha Stewart Weddings. It offers guidance to all with such wonderful common sense (which I've found all TOO uncommon in today's wedding guides!) This book does not tell the bride that she can do anything she wants becasue after all it's HER day. Ms. Shaw comes straight to the point and tells you the truth. Just like a best friend. Only this best friend knows exactly how to word the invitations and seat the groom's family. And this book is actually funny! The examples of faux pas are excellent reminders of just how ridiculous and childish people can get when it comes to weddings. This book will help you make your day special, AND help you expertly manage the delicate situations that will surely arise along the way. Above all, its humor will remind you that weddings are supposed to be fun. This is a great gift for a bride-to-be.
A great reference book for everyone involved in a wedding`.......2001-11-25
I am getting married in July and my sister is getting married in August. She is my maid of honor and I will be her matron of honor. She bought a lot of wedding ettiquette/planning books that we have both been consulting, and this is by far the best. The author has obviously been involved in planning many weddings, from the most elaborate to the most simple, and she offers great advice. A must-read for the bride who wants as many personal touches as possible, but also wants to know what's acceptable -- and what's not. A very funny read, as well!
Witty and Helpful Book.......2001-09-20
This wedding book is very well done. The best part of the book is the fact that it uses humor. In an age when weddings have become the focus of obsessive mothers and brides that are out of touch with reality, Shaw uses humor to foucs on keeping the wedding tasteful and nice. The book is full of tons of practical advice. The use of humor makes it very readable for grooms!

Book Description
Take a look at life from behind the beverage cart.
“They asked me to be groomed, be kind, and show up on time; it was too much pressure.”
“It was like being a waitress, only I was hurtling through space and wound up in Paris.”
“I thought it would be funny to climb into the overhead bin. How did I know the President of the United States would be on the flight that day?”
Where flight attendant Marsha Marks goes, funny things happen, and she tells them all in this hilarious and insightful chronicle of her career as a naive flight attendant and a struggling author. From missed flights to missing uniforms, miracle babies to indecipherable southern accents, Flying by the Seat of My Pants is a laugh-out-loud reminder of what is important and what keeps us steady through the turbulence of life.

Marsha Makes Me Laugh!.......2007-02-22
This book made me laugh! I guess I'm about as grouchy as the next guy and, like I said - Marsha made me laugh! Thanks for the grins!
This is a BLOG not a book.......2006-08-06
This amazingly thin book is low on content and quality.
I'm sure there are blogs out there that make much better reading.
Very empty, very bland. I'm amazed that you can actually have a career as a flight attendant and have so FEW experiences to relate! Oh, I hid in the luggage bin! Oh, I forgot my uniform and had to wear one 10 sizes too small! Oh, I spilled orange juice on a passenger!
Come on!
I bought it due to the 20 positive customer reviews.
Could it be a case of the author reviewing her own book, under different names? I believe it must be.... Or her friends and family...
Amazon customer reviews are usually pretty reliable, but once in a while you come across a case like this where the reviews are totally skewed and disconnected from reality.
Save your money!!!!
Don't buy it!!!
Flying By The Seat of My Pants.......2006-03-01
THIS BOOK IS A GREAT READ. LOTS OF FUN AND HUMOUR. PERFECT FOR ANYONE WHO WANTS TO BECOME A FLIGHT ATTENDANT OR IS INTERESTED IN THE FLIGHT ATTENDANT LIFE STYLE. MS. MARKS PERSONABLE QUALITY COMES THROUGH HER WRITING VERY CLEARLY. YOU FEEL LIKE YOUR ON THE FLIGHT WITH HER. ENJOY!!
QUITE A CHARACTER.......2005-12-14
A FEW MONTHS AGO I HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO HEAR MARTHA MARKS SPEAK IN ATLANTA. SHE IS QUITE A CHARACTER AND HAD ME HOLDING THE SIDE OF MY STOMACH FROM LAUGHING SO MUCH. THIS LITTLE BOOK REFLECTS ALL OF HER WILD ADVENTURES IN THE SKY AND ON THE GROUND. SHE'S THE NEIGHBOR YOU WISHED YOU COULD HAVE WHEN YOU JUST NEEDED SOMEONE TO SIT DOWN AT YOUR KITCHEN TABLE AND MAKE YOU LAUGH. I LOOK FORWARD TO READING HER OTHER BOOKS.
Flying By the Seat of My Pants is a blue ribbon winner!.......2005-11-18
I can't say enough good things about Marsha Mark's Flying By the Seat of My Pants! It will make you laugh. It will make you cry.
Sometimes, it will make you do both at the same time! Hopefully, it will also make you empathetic to those amazing men and women in the sky, who work very hard to keep us safe and secure.(Often, in spite of ourselves!) Do yourself a favor and purchase this book asap. Then do yourself an even bigger favor. Read it!

for some [most?] gamers.......2005-04-24
Something for somebody. Actually, for a bunch of somebodies. There is always a thrill to getting a clandestine edge in a game. Davis appeals to those gamers who believe this. (Which may be most of them.) He describes various techniques for several popular games, that give you unorthodox byways into their innards.
Of course, for single player games, this is sometimes decried as equivalent to cheating at solitaire. But there's no gainsaying the sheer fun of it!

Nothing much........2005-05-23
This book does not include much games, nor does each games have much secret. Example, it does not have any codes for GameCube's Pokemon Colosseum, which is a popular game. And for the Pokemon FireRed/LeafGreen, it just tells you how to activate the Mistery Event, which is of not much use and most Pokemon FR/LG owner already knows.

Book Description
Though the characters were different, Western shows' format often fell into one of several broad categories: marshals, sheriffs and other lawmen, wagon trains, cattle drives and ranchers, bounty hunters, gamblers and hired guns, and even spoofs. Arranged by categories, over 150 television Westerns are analyzed here, focusing on the characters, stories and why the shows succeeded or failed. How Native Americans have been portrayed is examined, as are such phenomena as single parent families (in shows such as The Big Valley, The Rifleman and Bonanza), women, Asians and blacks.

Thorough TV Western Review with Errors.......2006-09-29
This is an in-depth, thoroughly researched study of TV Westerns. It doesn't contain lists of episodes or episode synopses, but it does discuss various aspects & selected episodes of all the Western TV shows. The index is impressively detailed, but how did they manage to omit "William Boyd" (Hopalong Cassidy) as an entry?! Based on that glaring omission alone, I would suspect that there are other less obvious omissions as well. Various errors of fact are contained, for example, on p. 191 the author states that Cheyenne has a sidekick named "Smitty" for the first five episodes, but while recently watching this series, I saw Smitty in the first three episodes only. The author also misses the mark on matters of show content. The author's conclusion that "Generally, the Indians in these [Cheyenne] episodes [in the first season] are depicted as bloodthirsty savages with few redeeming qualities," is enitrely in error. The Cheyenne series was actually one of the more sensitive Western series on TV. The Cheyenne character (raised by Indians between the ages of 10-18) often points out noble & humanizing characteristics of Native Americans, & one first season episode in particular ("Quicksand") is especially favorable. On the positive side, I learned facts that years of research were unable to turn up elsewhere, like the reason for Andy Clyde not being hired to continue his role as "California" in the Hopalong Cassidy TV series. For Hopalong fans, there is an excellent discussion of the first TV western, the first TV media "super-hero" with the subsequent merchandising bonanza. Overall, an excellent book that loses a rating star for factual errors, erroneous conclusions & errors of omission. This book is best used as an adjunct for those readers who already have a good knowledge of the subject & are looking for additional information.
yuck.......2001-07-13
This book was as terrible as the odor of the wild wild west. I found the majority of his conclusions unsubstanciated. I would recommend that no one involved in the education profession consult this book for anything other than a good laugh...
Very thorough survey of TV Westerns.......1997-07-27
This is a very impressive and scholarly survey
(over 600 pages) of every TV Western program
ever aired. The author even has footnote
citations for his sources by chapter(!). The footnotes are very useful for discovering further sources of information.
The more popular series have a chapter devoted only to them, such as "The Wild Wild West". There are 28 pages on "Bonanza", and it's not just the same old info--the author goes into Pernell Roberts' dissatisfaction with the series and even spends a page on Hop Sing.
I found this book to be the best source of
information about "The Big Valley" as it covers
the series for 15 pages.
Hey you prospective authors out there, how about
a book on "The Big Valley"?
