Book Description
This book is the first to focus on the extraordinary symbiosis between Critical Theory and other discourses of the visual in the first half of the twentieth century. In four extended case studies, Frederic J. Schwartz traces the way central concepts of the aesthetics later termed “Frankfurt School” were deeply rooted in contemporary developments in painting, photography, architecture, and film, as well as psychology, advertising, and the discipline of art history as it was practiced by figures such as Heinrich Wölfflin, Erwin Panofsky, Wilhelm Pinder, and Hans Sedlmayr.
Schwartz explores the shifting intersection between the history of art and the Frankfurt School and seeks to uncover its specific logic. He argues that artists, art historians, and Critical Theorists were united by a common project: that of exploring those aspects of modernity that could only be revealed by its visual products, of knowing the modern visually.

Book Description
A delightfully silly, good-natured parody of the recording phenomenon Chant and other works that put Gregorian music on the charts, Grunt is a book and CD set that combines Sandra Boynton's inimitable way with farm animals and a satirical sense that comes deliciously out of left barn.
In a far-off valley live the obeisant Domoinkan Pigs of Snouto Domoinko de Silo. Here, twelve times a day, these simple swine grunt the unadorned, ethereal music of Pigorian Chant (translation included). For occasions from the first mealtime (Op-slay ime-tay. Et's lay eat-ay. Um yay, um-yay.) to Nox Animaliae, when they're joined by all the animals in a harmony that dates back before the time of Caesar Hogustus, the pigs chant.
Listen, look at Sandra Boynton's delicious illustrations, and laugh. It's what to play whenever you're feeling disgruntled.
Amazon.com
"Tempus porco nihil est," or, "Time to a pig means zilch," according to Grunt: Pigorian Chant from Snouto Domoinko de Silo, a very funny takeoff on the Gregorian chant craze by Sandra Boynton, the author of Chocolate: The Consuming Passion and other droll volumes. This amusing little book, complete with a well-sung 40-minute compact disc by the Ad Hog Camerata, is a note-perfect send-up of chant and the hype that surrounds it. At the same time, the book presents the musical chronicle of a day in the life of one seriously pretentious farm. Boynton's pictures--from the cover to the "illuminations"--are a delight. The cows speak for record company executives everywhere when they intone, "Non plaudite. Modo pecuniam jacite." (Don't applaud, just throw money.) This would make a perfect gift for a musical friend, and if no one gets it for you, you'd be well justified in buying it for yourself for a quick pick-me-up or chant overdose antidote.
Customer Reviews:
Very Funny!.......2007-06-04
A friend sent "Grunt: Pigorian Chant" to us because we raise pastured pigs. It is hilarious! My kids had a blast with it and I read the (long) intro as well as the words of the music to my three and a half year old daughter. We all enjoy Pig-Latin and Ubby-Dubby as well as my son is studying real Latin (we homeschool) and I know Latin. This all made the whole thing that much more poignant. This is a very serious (sus-ious) out-take on classical music.
Clever, Not for Toddlers.......2007-02-11
There's no denying that this is clever, well-written material. But our toddler, who loves the other Boynton book/CD combos, can't really get into it. What's more, unlike the other discs, this one is somewhat annoying as background music.
Serious chant aficionados may disagree, but I think it's best to plan on sitting still and listening to this with the words in front of you to really appreciate it. But you probably won't need more than one or two listenings before it gets tiring. The concept is clever, and the execution is very good, but the joke wears thin pretty quickly.
Parents should also be aware that this isn't really like the other Boynton material (such as "Philadelphia Chickens" and "Rhinoceros Tap"), and it's not really music for kids. They might learn to enjoy it (and maybe they should), but it's definitely not in the same vein as those other more simple and tuneful works.
grunt grunt.......2007-01-11
The kids I bought it for seem to think it was okay but I didn't find it as entertaining as her other music books.
A Must Have for Chant Lovers.......2006-08-25
Hilarious spoof of Gregorian Chant. If you are a music history buff, this is a must for your collection.
Funniest thing ever!.......2005-07-16
My Mother first shared this with me and it is one of the most cleverly funny things I have ever experienced. I belong to a medieval reinactment group (SCA) and I really love putting it on as background at meetings and seeing if anyone catches on. It works both as normal music (if you arn't paying attention it sounds just like regular chant), and as a fabulous IN JOKE.
I think you have to have a certain kind of twisted humor to really enjoy it though... and don't buy it if you don't enjoy chant. You'll get bored otherwise... but I love it and hope to share it with many others.

Essential for Prez's fans!.......2004-12-11
A wonderful compilation! It contains the uncensored version of Prez's last interview to Francois Postif a few days before dying. If you like Prez, buy it!
Great Book to pick up and read in segments!.......2002-03-12
This book is by no means a definitive account of everything that happened in Lester's life, but why would you want it to be? That would be boring, and not enough color.
Lewis Porter gives Jazz fans a fantastic view of Lester Youngs world without getting boring once. I recommend Jazz fans to read this book. If your a saxophone player like I am, pick up a CD to hear his incredible tone!
sketchy.......2000-06-07
I thought that it was a pretty good book overall but it left too much to the readers imagination. If I have to think about what they are saying while I am reading it turns me away.

fallout by jim lester.......2006-05-30
Fallout is about a troubled teen boy, Kenny Francis. He was sent to Bedford academy to hopefully straighten out his life. Well... that didnt work to great at first because he pushes the star football player out a window in his first day there. The suprising thing is he doesnt get kicked out and hes not exactly sure why. He thinks its because when his dad was a student there he was a star football player as well as an excelent student.
Stories of his father (told by his other "Dads") soon escalated to his father being a hero in the war and nvr being afraid of anything. Every story he heard of his father was a great heroic tale. But later in the book he finds out some different truthes. These truthes eventually encourage him to make something out of life. He also figures out that its ok to be scared every once in a while.

A unique and elegant approach to your yarn collection. Sally Melville`s simople techniques and patterns combine diverse colors, fibers, and weights of yarn to create sensational garments.
Customer Reviews:
This book will inspire you to use your stash.......2005-11-30
I loved this book. If you have been knitting for awhile, you will have accumulated lots of odd balls and bits of pieces of yarn. This is the book to help inspire you how to use them. She also shows how each sweater uses the color wheel in the design, and some wonderful tips for knitters.
Patterns are difficult.......2004-05-06
This is not like the "Knit Stitch" or "Purl Stitch" books of Melville's, which I love. I found no patterns that I cared to knit, and few that I felt I would even want to attempt. It's promoted as having patterns that get rid of your stash, but most patterns do this by weaving in small amounts of various colors. You will still need to have large quantities of a basic color for many of these patterns. I will be getting rid of my book, unfortunately. Check this out a library first to see if these patterns are what you like.
An Outstanding Knitting Book.......2003-06-21
Sally Melville is a knitting genious. Her books are innovatinve and brilliant. You will not be disapointed.

More than patterns.......2003-04-03
This book will make you think about knitting and yarn in a different way. I keep returning to it and always come away with a new idea or plan. The ideas for combining different yarns, overdyeing, and how to make simple ideas timeless are well worth the price of this book. You immediately look at the stash in a different way, asking how you could make a collection of fibers into something unique with Sally's helpful ideas and advice.
Original, inventive, fun and exciting.......2001-04-19
Truely original designs and great use of multiple yarns. I have to confess to be a collector of yarns one ball at a time. This the perfect book for the adventurous knitter that wants to experiment with yarn. Not since Kaffe Fassett have I seen another truly inventive great teacher. Thank you Sally, you are appreciated, very much!
Very Useful Book For Your Knitting Library.......2001-01-26
I would actually rate this four and 1/2 stars. This book has excellent suggestions for how to store your yarn stash and how to combine different weights and colors of yarns. Also there is a good section on creating your own patterns and why you do some types of shapings to make items fit better. The patterns themselves are pretty interesting and if you like vests (I don't) there are several. One complaint I have is that most of her designs have what look to be very pricey yarn in them--she can justify buying it because she's in the business. Most of us do not have those kinds of yarns, so be forewarned--your results WILL vary. Also, on the "knitting as warp" technique, it would have been extremely helpful to have a "before weaving" gauge as well as one to be measured after weaving in. Definitely worth buying, just for the topics covered, as it is a good price for a hardback.
Wonderful resource on combining colors/using up stash yarn.......2000-12-27
Of the dozen or so knitting books I've bought in the last two years, this is the book that I use the most. I'm knitting a second design and pondering several more. Still, even if you don't like the looks of the designs, this book is worth buying if you have a box or a closet or a room full of leftover yarn or yarn that just hasn't quite become a sweater. (Who us knitters, buy yarn just because? :))
There are two huge reasons to have this book if you have yarn. First, Sally provides a very thoughtful chapter on how to organize your stash in a manner that will both stimulate your creativity while protecting your valuable stash. Secondly, she provides terrific instruction on using the color wheel to combine colors in a manner that doesn't just look like you threw a bunch of leftovers together. The designs are a bit boxy -- in part, I suspect, because of the complexity of the color work in most of the sweaters.
This is not a book for beginners, but a fabulous resource of intermediate and advanced "fiberholics".
Highly inventive, beautiful designs for the whole family.......1999-11-05
Melville has found a brand new technique, which is unusual in itself, since so much in knitting is just one designer copying ("adapting") another. I was glad to see someone daring to be unique. At first glance and at many glances later on, I have to say that her styles in this book are really beautiful -- and she incorporates many different techniques, many different designs, so there is bound to be something for everybody. She's also attentive to color by presenting sweater models in a variety of schemes, so those who like bright colors, or heathery colors, or earth tones will find something they like. The sweaters look fairly simple to knit, also, and if you are using color in the knitting, it is in a way that is not intricate. I have yet to try one of the woven looks, but it must be faster and simpler than intarsia or color stranding. The only disappointment is that these designs are not readily available as kits -- I'd like to make some of them identical to those in the book. The Mannings in Pennsylvania has a few of the designs kitted, but not the ones that I want. Melville presents a really nice collection of sweaters. This is one of the best knitting books on the market, comparable with Jo Sharp's new Knitting Bazaar as two of the most inspiring books I've ever owned. Hope to see much more from this author in the future.

Book Description
Television is a unique medium in that both its dramas and its comedies have the ability to tell their stories over real time, with characters developing over years rather than just the two hours allowed in a movie or the few hundred pages of a book. Despite this, very few authors have attempted to look at television from this vantage point. Prime-Time Television provides an essential resource for anyone interested in the history of television. The focus here is on programming: the shows, their producers, the genres, the trends, and the influences. Everyone interested in the questions of why the programs look the way they do, why they're scheduled as they are, why some shows air while others are cancelled, and what has shaped and influenced the shows we see, will want this book. The chapters are organized chronologically, beginning with an examination of radio's influence on early television, and cover all major developments--technological, aesthetic, and to some extent cultural--in the medium. Concise sidebars cover more concise topics, such as the quiz show scandals, and the introduction of the three-camera filmed sitcom with "I Love Lucy," a model that has remained the standard for over 50 years.

A complete and accessible understanding of the media medium of television .......2006-07-04
Prime-Time Television: A Concise History collectively co-authored by the team of academicians Barbara Moore (College of Communications, University of Tennessee), Marvin R. Bensman (University of Memphis), and Jim Van Dyke (Marian College, Milwaukee) provides a complete and accessible understanding of the media medium of television through the historical and modern study of sitcoms, dramas, and other prime-time television particulars. Delving deep into the intricacies of American popular culture and the influential role played by many television shows, Prime-Time Television features a scholarly analysis of the shows, producers, genres, trends, and ideals behind various influential televisions productions. A seminal contribution to university level Popular Culture reference collections, Prime-Time Television is very strongly recommended reading, especially for students of the sociological and cultural implications of ever-popular prime-time television, from its earliest roots and developments, and the psychological structuring behind so many television programs.
